We won’t have a full explanation for the implosion at a Longview paper processing mill for a while. The disaster left 11 people dead, and released thousands of gallons of white liquor, which is a highly corrosive chemical used to break down wood chips into pulp. The tragedy highlights the risks when people work in close proximity with large quantities of dangerous chemicals. The plant is one of several big industrial facilities in the area. Reporter Kyra Buckley looked into the pulp and paper mill industry and its safety record for Oregon Public Broadcasting. Early Tuesday morning, a chemical tank ruptured at a paper mill in Southwest Washington, killing at least two people and injuring eight more. At least nine more people are still unaccounted for as of Wednesday morning. Hundreds of community members held a vigil Tuesday evening to honor those affected by the tragedy. Recovery efforts were suspended yesterday evening due to the ongoing threat of corrosive chemicals at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Company. We’ll hear from state Sen. Jeff Wilson from Washington’s 19th Legislative District, which covers Longview. Wilson grew up in Longview and ran a private sector waste management firm before going into politics. He’ll share his experience of working as an environmental cleanup contractor at the Longview paper mill over the years

Here are your PFAS headlines from across the USA! In New Jersey we have a new ban on PFAS products! Next up is the Great Lakes region and the state of Wisconsin. We've seen a big fight over PFAS in particular in Wisconsin, where state lawmakers are trying to figure out how and where to set their PFAS limits. We've got even more happening in the state as we turn now to the small town of Stella where residents have been dealing with the fallout of contamination from a paper mill. Jumping over now to North Carolina where a study done across the state found PFAS concentrations above federal limits. Hosts Tom Simmons and Matthew Wallace are here to break it down. In the heart of Chillicothe, Ohio, a 175-year-old paper mill, long considered an unofficial symbol of the community, was forced to end production in August. Once a cornerstone of the town of 22,000, demand for the specialty paper it produced steadily declined, leading to its closure. First announced in April, the shutdown affected roughly 750 employees, who were notified months in advance. As Pixelle Specialty Solutions, the plant's owner, prepared to relocate operations, workers were left facing difficult choices about their futures.
State regulators say a Rhinelander paper mill was responsible for PFAS contamination. Then, how a government shutdown could affect Wisconsin. And, a look at the state's closure of two homes to help veterans.

Oakland Author, Lenore Weiss, reads from her new environmental novel, Pulp into Paper. It's about the death of a young boy forcing out the truth about what's happening at the local paper mill.
A Malaysian environmentalist said she doesn't want New Zealand sending any more of its rubbish to her country, with some recycling plants allegedly already polluting local neighbourhoods and waterways. Oji is closing its Penrose Pulp and Paper Mill in December with the loss of 75 jobs. The closure means Aotearoa will be sending another hundred thousand tonnes a year of cleaned wastepaper to Malaysia for recycle; bringing the total shipped offshore to three hundred thousand tonnes per annum, Environmentalist Lay Peng Pua spoke to Lisa Owen.
Soaring power prices and rising labour costs have combined to force the closure of a third mill, taking 72 people's jobs with it. The Japanese owned Oji Fibre Solutions said it had no other option but to shut down its paper recycling plant in Auckland and lay off the staff. Many of those now feel they have no choice but to take their skills overseas. The closure comes just three weeks after 230 workers at Winstone Pulp International were told those two mills were closing for good. The Oji workers, some of whom have been there for decades, are left trying to figure out what to do next, Melanie Earley reports.
