A Kawerau paper mill has found a new power source as New Zealand struggles with a looming winter power crunch. A newly released briefing to the Minister shows electricity supply is tight, and gas supply needs to be maintained until suitable alternatives are found. Essity's Kawerau Paper Mill has become the first in the world to create a machine that runs entirely on geothermal steam. Essity General Manager Mark Stevens told Kerre Woodham that the main area of benefit is sustainability – with the mill producing the same amount of paper with 66% less carbon output. Sara and I met through my husband (then boyfriend) when they lived together post-college. A beloved classmate of Adam's, we followed Sara's career as she stunningly bounced from National Tour to Broadway to Paper Mill or Nyack or wherever the work brought her, and at every turn she was nothing short of brilliant. Currently starring in the magnificent Broadway production of "Water for Elephants," Sara sat with me between shows to chat about her journey; the ups and downs, heartbreaks and roses. No one can attest more to the nonlinear nature of this business, and I defy you to find someone who's navigated it with more grace, poise, humor or self-awareness than this extraordinary artist. Sara has created roles in the Broadway productions of "Water For Elephants," "Seussical," "Nine" (Broadway revival, replacing Jane Krakowski as Carla), "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," and tours of "The Addams Family," "Fosse," and "101 Dalmations." Sit back and enjoy one of the most stimulating conversations I've had about this business we call "Show."

Oakland Author, Lenore Weiss, reads from her new environmental novel, Pulp into Paper. It's about the death of a young boy forcing out the truth about what's happening at the local paper mill.
A Malaysian environmentalist said she doesn't want New Zealand sending any more of its rubbish to her country, with some recycling plants allegedly already polluting local neighbourhoods and waterways. Oji is closing its Penrose Pulp and Paper Mill in December with the loss of 75 jobs. The closure means Aotearoa will be sending another hundred thousand tonnes a year of cleaned wastepaper to Malaysia for recycle; bringing the total shipped offshore to three hundred thousand tonnes per annum, Environmentalist Lay Peng Pua spoke to Lisa Owen.
Soaring power prices and rising labour costs have combined to force the closure of a third mill, taking 72 people's jobs with it. The Japanese owned Oji Fibre Solutions said it had no other option but to shut down its paper recycling plant in Auckland and lay off the staff. Many of those now feel they have no choice but to take their skills overseas. The closure comes just three weeks after 230 workers at Winstone Pulp International were told those two mills were closing for good. The Oji workers, some of whom have been there for decades, are left trying to figure out what to do next, Melanie Earley reports.

After a 36-hour search, his body was found beaten at the bottom of a pulp paper vat. Over the next three years, police put together a story involving an anonymous phone call to police about a theft, the release of a recording of that call to the wrong person, and how far the bonds of union brotherhood can go. It's a one-week temporary shutdown. But the release from Kruger says there could be more shutdowns to come. The reason given? "The difficult business environment in the newsprint sector." Jim Parsons is mayor of Corner Brook (interview starts at 0:32) and Ray Brake is the president of the Greater Corner Brook Board of Trade (starts at 9:22). Kruger declined our request for an interview.

"The refusal to ratify WestRock's 'last, best, and final' offer came as a result of the company insisting on removing contract language pertaining to what the workers there call 'penalties' for long hours. Members resoundingly rejected this contract, even though it included an unheard-of $28,000 ratification bonus—increased from an already staggering offer of $20,000, which workers already rejected on Sept. 21." Workers at WestRock's Mahrt Mill paper mill have been locked out by the company since early October and say they can't be bought off with bonuses for signing a contract that will ensure they have even less time for life outside of work. In this special guest-hosted episode, Morrison speaks with Mahrt Mill workers from the picket line about the lockout and their fight to get their lives back.Help us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews
