Achoo! We're falling in love with the one and only Faith Prince. You Might Know Her From Modern Family, Emily in Paris, Melissa & Joey, Spin City, My Father the Hero, The Last Dragon, and Broadway productions of Guys & Dolls, A Catered Affair, Bells Are Ringing, and BOOP! Faith talked to us about grounding her character, Valentina, in the cartoonish plot of BOOP!, coping with fame during her star-making turn in Guys & Dolls, and leaning on her co-star Gerard Depardieu in one of her first leading roles on camera in My Father the Hero. Faith also shared stories from working as a Broadway replacement in the cumbersome costume of Ursula in The Little Mermaid and the notoriously “realistic” production of Anne as Miss Hannigan. All that, plus working with theatre legends like Jerome Robbins, Abe Burrows, Betty Comden & Adolph Green, doing dialect work at Joey Lawrence and Lily Collins, doing her best Cyndi Lauper in cult fave The Last Dragon (and making pals with Berry Gordy, and working with Jean Smart and Mary McDonnell in the short-lived High Society. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Jerry Mitchell. Credited with helping to put four Klu Klux Klan members and a serial killer into greater confinement, Mitchell was awarded a MacArthur “genius” grant and nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in journalism. Mitchell, who's a White Man, authored the book Race Against Time, which examines the history of White Terrorist violence in the “magnolia state” - much of it involving Race Soldiers who successfully evaded prosecution for killing black people. We'll examine Mitchell's coverage of more recent Terrorist violence in the state. The 2011 lynching of James Craig Anderson, who was killed by a mob of young White teens who went hunting for a black person to kill. Last year, Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker were sexually terrorized by the local “Goon Squad.” The “goons” made the black males shower together, doused them with chocolate sauce, and attempted to use a dildo on the two. We'll highlight the family connection between these two incidents, Deryl Dedmon murdered Anderson, Christian Dedmon is a convicted “goon,” and emphasize that White ignorance fails to explain this generational pattern of White Supremacist violence. We even made time for a word on the welfare queen Brett Favre, accused of stealing TANF funds with the help of his White cronies, and the late Carolyn Bryant Donham, who lived a long life of White Supremacy and lies while evading prosecution for her role in the lynching of Emmett L. Till in 1955. #WhitePeopleKillForFun #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
MISSISSIPPI BURNING is the name of a motion picture, released in 1988, starring Gene Hackman and Willem DaFoe, loosely based on the murders of 3 Civil Rights workers in Mississippi, during the “Freedom Summer” of 1964. James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner were lured to Philadelphia, Mississippi, and executed by the Ku Klux Klan. No one was ever convicted of their murders, until over 40 years later when Jerry Mitchell, an investigative reporter with The Charion-Ledger, in Jackson, Mississippi, convinced authorities to reopen more than one cold murder case from the Civil Rights Era, prompting one colleague to call him "the South's "Simon Wiesenthal." In 2009, he received a "genius grant" from the MacArthur Foundation. Author John Grisham wrote of Mr. Mitchell: “For almost two decades, investigative journalist Jerry Mitchell doggedly pursued the Klansmen responsible for some of the most notorious murders of the civil rights movement. His book, “Race Against Time,” is his amazing story. Thanks to him, and to courageous prosecutors, witnesses, and FBI agents, justice finally prevailed.” It is my honor to welcome Jerry Mitchell to Murder Most Foul today.
1-Jackson Redevelopment Authority has been given a $1.5 Million dollar grant my the forestry commission and have decided to use to waste on converting a useless greenspace into a useless greenspace with tree's on Farish St. in downtown Jackson, Mississippi. We talk about all the reason why this is a complete grift, a hustle and a waste of money. 2-Our Farish St. greenspace conversation turned into the question of the day: What are some of the biggest projects that got announced but never happened in Central Mississippi (especially Jackson). Someone text and asked about the music festival "Jubilee Jam" returning and we explain why Jackson will never have another major music festival that depends on people who need to be able to let their guard down and enjoy themselves without having to be armed the entire time they're in town or at the festival. 3-MAKE COMEDY OFFENSIVE AGAIN: Remember when you could crack a racially insensitive joke without getting canceled? When the LGBTQ community could laugh at themselves and others without being accused of internalizing homophobia or transphobia? Oh, how we miss those days! Nowadays, it seems like we've entered an era where only certain groups are allowed to be the butt of the joke. But let's be real, folks – if we can't laugh at ourselves, who can we laugh at? It's time to bring back the freedom to make fun of everyone, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. 4-New article from Jerry Mitchell and the New York Time releases some internal "WhatsApp" text messages between Rankin County Sheriff's Dept. Goon Squad members where they talk about some of the terrible things they did, talked about keeping score, taking pics of corpses & more. We decipher what's reality and what's "locker room talk" and if Byran Bailey knew what was or wasn't going on with the Goon Squads activities.
Join Shaun Yurtkuran and me on this morning's Clay Edwards Show on WYAB 103.9FM Jackson MS, as we dissect the latest article from Jerry Mitchell and the New York Times. We'll delve into the shocking internal "WhatsApp" text messages exchanged among the Rankin County Sheriff's Department's Goon Squad members, discussing their heinous actions, scorekeeping, and even taking photos of corpses. We'll separate fact from fiction and explore whether Sheriff Bryan Bailey was aware of the Goon Squad's activities. Don't miss this eye-opening discussion!

I believe the coverage provided by Shaun Yurtkuran and myself on the Goon Squad story over the last 6 months is unparalleled in our media format (audio). We had the incredible opportunity to conclude our coverage with an interview with the legendary Jerry Mitchell from Mississippi Today, who initially broke this story wide open. This coverage transcended politics, race, and party affiliations, focusing instead on the fundamental issues of right and wrong, and good versus evil. We are confident that our work on this story is on the right side of history, and we invite you to listen to our conversation with Jerry Mitchell. We hope to have the chance to speak with him again in the future.

This week's pick is our good friend and supporter, Geek Girl Soup's Susan! And this week it's the 1988 musical comedy, Hairspray! Check out Geek Girl Soup at https://geekgirlsoup.com. "Hairspray" explored themes of racial integration and body image while celebrating the vibrant subculture of dance and music in 1960s Baltimore. Starring Ricki Lake as Tracy Turnblad, the film's production marked Waters' move towards more mainstream cinema. The casting of Divine, a drag queen icon known for collaborating with Waters, in a non-drag role was a notable departure for both the director and actor. Waters, known for his provocative and unconventional filmmaking style, had to navigate the challenges of balancing his unique voice with the demands of a more commercial musical genre. The film's production also involved the collaboration of composer Marc Shaiman, who created the infectious and lively score, and choreographer Jerry Mitchell, who brought the energetic dance sequences to life. The film's success lies in its ability to tackle serious social issues with humor and heart, creating an entertaining and memorable musical that resonated with audiences. "Hairspray" became a cult classic and later inspired a successful Broadway musical adaptation and a 2007 film remake, showcasing the enduring appeal of Waters' unique vision and the film's message of acceptance and inclusivity. This is the second half of my conversation with author Liza Gennaro, whose fascinating book is titled: Making Broadway Dance. If you missed part one you may want to catch up on that episode before listening to this one. Liza is currently the Dean of Musical Theater at the Manhattan School of Music and she also has had a very active and successful career as a dancer and choreographer. Interestingly, she is closely related to this subject matter of her book because her father was the Tony Award winning choreographer and star dancer, Peter Gennaro. He is profiled in the book as well as in this episode. By the end of Part 1, we had made it to the late 1940s when Agnes de Mille was dominating the field of Broadway choreography. Between 1943 and 1945, De Mille had four hits in a row – Oklahoma!, One Touch of Venus, Bloomer Girl, and Carousel – and three of them choreographed in her signature “Americana” style. This unprecedented string of successes made her the most powerful choreographer in the commercial theater, and soon led to her becoming the first director-choreographer of the “Golden Age” with Rodgers & Hammerstein's Allegro. De Mille's most significant contribution to the Broadway Musical was breaking the mold of the traditional Broadway chorus girl by insisting on hiring actor/dancers who could fully embody the characters that they were playing. This new approach to Broadway dance, and this new kind of Broadway dancer, would be adopted by everyone who followed in her footsteps – especially Jerome Robbins – who years later would write, “Agnes broke the conception of what the Broadway dancer could be in the Broadway Musical. What they looked like, what was desired of them, and what their contribution to the show was.” And, as you will hear, Robbins took that idea and ran with it, just as De Mille's “Americana” style was starting to lose its luster. That's just the beginning Later in the episode Liza and I discuss Michael Kidd, Bob Fosse, Gower Champion, Michael Bennett, Graciela Daniele, Susan Stroman, Kathleen Marshall, Bill T. Guests: David Dobkin (Director: Wedding Crashers, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga with Will Ferrell), Jerry Mitchell (Three Time Tony Award Winning Director/Choreographer, Kinky Boots, Legally Blonde) Eurovision is the most watched song contest in the world– with viewership reaching 200 million people. It's larger than the Superbowl! But while Eurovision songs have charted 28 times in America, 19 of those times came before 1974. This was shortly followed by a dry spell that featured only one Eurovision song on the US charts in nearly 50 years. What happened? And why, over the past three years, have we seen a resurgence– with Eurovision acts touring major venues in the states, garnering awards and press coverage, and, yes, charting? We explore these questions, and then talk with David Dobkin, the director of the movie responsible for the suddenly growing American interest in Eurovision– taking a look behind the scenes at the Will Ferrell vehicle that streamed #1 on Netflix, and tracing David's personal journey of discovering and falling in love with the contest as he made the film. Then we introduce Eurovision to Tony Award Winning Director Jerry Mitchell live on the podcast, with a game we call “Tops and Bottoms with Jerry Mitchell.” As we sip palomas in his Fire Island home, Jerry brings his expertise, honed through years of staging Broadway's biggest musicals, to help us evaluate what makes a successful Eurovision production number. Very Jerry Mitchell... Jerry Mitchell and Michelle Zeitlin shared their memories of working with the legendary Michael Bennett and Bob Avian, on SCANDAL, a Broadway workshop with an outstanding group of stars and triple threats. Jerry was assisting the show creator, Michael Bennett at the original auditions, where Michelle was amongst over two thousand dancer-singers auditioning for a few coveted ensemble roles for this ground-breaking musical, at 890 Studios. Jerry was an assistant and skeleton crew dancer on that production, which led to so many other amazing productions including FOLLIES and CHESS. He also worked with Jerome Robbins on JEROME ROBBINS BROADWAY. And then...he became a choreographer in his own right. Now wearing the title of Director-Choreographer, he is most proud of BROADWAY BARES, and he was honored this year with the 2023 Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for his work on a modern day burlesque show that has raised millions of dollars for Equity Fights Aids. @jammyprod on Instagram For more on Michelle Zeitlin, CEO of More Zap Productions & Management, please see http://www.passion-power.com http://www.morezap.com

AND, in recognition of his dedication and contributions to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, as well as his 3 decades of volunteer service through the arts, our guest will be receiving the prestigious Isabelle Stevenson Award at the upcoming Tony Awards on June 11. Continuing our celebration of the 20th Anniversary of HAIRSPRAY – The Musical, my guest this week is the show's original choreographer JERRY MITCHELL who shares with us a first-hand, behind-the-scenes look into the creation of that Tony Award winning musical -- especially in regard to the how the show's unique staging, choreography, design, as well as many of its most memorable moments were first dreamed up and executed! You will also get an inside view of Jerry's close collaborations with Hairspray's director, Jack O'Brian, lead producer Margo Lion, set designer David Rockwell, and Tony Award winning songwriters Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman. You will also have the opportunity to hear excerpts from the show original "demo recording" featuring vocals by Annie Golden and Jenifer Lewis! 20 years ago I had the great privilege of being part of the birth of Hairspray – The Musical because at that time I served as the Producing Artistic Director of Seattle's 5th Avenue Theater where the show received its World Premiere. This is my 3rd episode celebrating HAIRSPRAY's 20th. Last week I had the great pleasure of having Marc & Scott as my guests, and a few weeks ago, on Episode 71, my guest was one of the show's original producer's, Adam Epstein, who is now the host of his own podcast called Dirty Moderate. Please feel free to listen to these episodes on any order as each of my guests brings their own specific memories and perspectives to the celebration. Jerry Mitchell is a two time Tony Award winner whose work on Broadway includes the choreography for You're A Good Man Charlie Brown, The Rocky Horror Show, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, La Cage Ax Folles, and Catch Me If You Can - and the direction and choreography for Legally Blonde, Kinky Boots, On Your Feet, and Pretty Woman.
