Harriet Wistrich is one of the country's most prominent human rights lawyers. In 2016 she founded the Centre for Women's Justice and over the course of her career, she has won landmark victories in very difficult legal cases. She has helped women imprisoned after killing their abusers regain their freedom. She's also represented women seeking justice from the Metropolitan Police over their deployment of undercover police officers who have had relationships and children with female activists.After studying PPE at Oxford, Harriet moved to Liverpool and began her career working in film and documentaries. She retrained as a lawyer in her early thirties and in 1990 co-founded the pressure group Justice for Women. Harriet lives in London with her partner, the journalist Julie Bindel. The story of Jane Kwok Chinese name Wu Ming Ting. Born Shanghai 1928 She is 94 years old. Formby Podcast interviewed at her home in Crosby November 2022. Jane was one of 6 children, girls and boys, born and raised in Shanghai during a time of massive cultural change and unrest in China. Educated in speaking 5 different languages - regional dialects from China, Mandarin, Cantonese, English and French, Lucy got a job working with China National Aviation Corporation as an air hostess. During her travels with the job she met her husband and moved to the UK living in Crosby. Working, caring for family, bringing up 4 girls. China was ruled one family during the Qing Dynasty from 1643 - 1912. In 1900, China's glory days were behind her. China was a nation in decline. In 1900, China was heavily controlled by foreign nations who tended to dominate the ports such as Shanghai. China was ruled by the Qing family, though the family is better known as the Manchu's. 1912 - 1949 Chinese Republic was formed. 1949, Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong declared the creation of the People's Republic of China. Communism crept over China. Jane's memory of her mother was that she could not walk. Foot binding had began and became a fashion in China's educated soceity in the 1200s . Binding girls feet is one of the most vivid images from China. However, each time you apparently were trying to say the word “cardioid”, it sounded to me as if you were saying the word “cardio”. They are similar words and both are connected with the English word “heart”. With physical exercise, we talk about cardio (as in cardiovascular) and with microphones, we talk about cardioid. I must further clarify that cardioid (with microphones) is a type of a heart-shaped pickup pattern which is somewhat directional. Cardioid patterns exist with both condenser and dynamic microphones. In fact, each dynamic microphone you mentioned on the show today has a cardioid pattern, including the ATR2100 and the SM7B. The AT2005USB (which is the black version of the ATR2100, and I currently own a couple of AT2005USB) also has a cardioid pattern. The main microphone I currently use in my studio is a BP40 (also dynamic and from Audio-Technica, which I reviewed here) has a supercardioid pattern, which means that it rejects sounds from the sides even more than a typical cardioid pattern, but also means that the person speaking into it must be that more careful to be on-mic as opposed to off-mic. I like the sound of both the BP40 and the SM7B. Both the BP40 that I use and the SM7B that you use are black in color, which I happen to like. I heard your Microphone episode today and would like to add some comments and additional relevant data to the valuable information you already presented.Everything you said about dynamic versus condenser microphones is absolutely true. However, each time you apparently were trying to say the word “cardioid”, it sounded to me as if you were saying the word “cardio”. They are similar words and both are connected with the English word “heart”. With physical exercise, we talk about cardio (as in cardiovascular) and with microphones, we talk about cardioid. I must further clarify that cardioid (with microphones) is a type of a heart-shaped pickup pattern which is somewhat directional. Cardioid patterns exist with both condenser and dynamic microphones. In fact, each dynamic microphone you mentioned on the show today has a cardioid pattern, including the ATR2100 and the SM7B. The AT2005USB (which is the black version of the ATR2100, and I currently own a couple of AT2005USB) also has a cardioid pattern. The main microphone I currently use in my studio is a BP40 (also dynamic and from Audio-Technica, which I reviewed here) has a supercardioid pattern, which means that it rejects sounds from the sides even more than a typical cardioid pattern, but also means that the person speaking into it must be that more careful to be on-mic as opposed to off-mic. I like the sound of both the BP40 and the SM7B. Both the BP40 that I use and the SM7B that you use are black in color, which I happen to like. I want to clarify about the download capabilities of the app as it stands now, because even Google Play Music’s own product managers have undersold this feature.The Google Play Music app for Android has always had a feature in the settings that restricts it to getting content when on WiFi to save on bandwidth, and I have always had it set that way. As soon as our shows became searchable in the Play Music Android app. I searched for a show and as soon as I clicked to subscribe each show, it immediately asked me if I wanted to download the three latest episodes. In both cases, I said yes. I don’t know whether that pop-up question comes to all, or perhaps only to those who had previously set the app only to get content when on WiFi. What I can definitely affirm is that for me, it gave me the option to download the most recent three episodes, and did so, since at the end I got a notification saying that those three episodes were downloaded. So no, we can’t yet specifically download specific episodes older than the most recent three. However, by setting the preferences only to get content when on WiFi, and then subscribing to a show, it will then automatically download new episodes when on WiFi. That’s not perfect, but it’s not terrible either.-------------------------------------------From Last week’s mobile recording episode about android-- here is Allen’s feedbackYes, the iRig Pre offers phantom power. I am extremely familiar with this and several other preamp/A-to-D converters from IK Multimedia (and other manufacturers) after reviewing them for ProVideo Coalition magazine. However, the two microphones mentioned by your guest from Single Gender (if I recall the them correctly) are both dynamic microphones and don't need phantom, and I wouldn't recommend using a Y-XLR cable in a situation where you needed phantom power. The two dynamic mics she are RE-20,RE-27 using are very good, and don't require phantom. If someone really wanted to connect two XLR mics which require phantom power to an Android, the simplest solution would be the iRig Pro DUO (also from IK Multimedia), which I have for review, but haven't yet published the review. It accepts up to two XLR mics, and can output phantom to each. It also works with iOS, Mac or Windows. To use it with Android, it includes the special USB OTG cable, which ends in micro USB. However, one must verify that the Android phone or tablet supports OTG. Mine fortunately does, but not all do. If you need it, I can send you a link to Android devices that support OTG.--------------------------------------------I thought you’d like to know that I featured your Spreaker Studio for desktop in my recent live webinar The new radio, and in the Castilian (aka "Spanish") version of the same webinar (done a different day), La nueva radio.I made a point-by-point comparison between the free Spreaker Studio for desktop and the US$395 Hindenburg Journalist Pro, which I use to produce most of my shows (and audio for other projects). There are many more things in common than you might think between these two apps:- Both are available for both Mac and Windows.- Both can accept multiple USB mics simultaneously. (Spreaker Studio combines them, live style, while HJP records them on independent tracks.)- Both can integrate with Skype for interviews or co-hosts.- Both can play effects live, although only HJP allows caller/co-host allows to hear the effects as they are played live.- Both can record, although HJP offers the choice of sampling rate, including 48 kHz if desired (something I covered in detail in the open letter I sent to you), while currently, Spreaker Studio for desktop will only record 44.1 kHz.- Only Spreaker Studio App is designed for live broadcast too, in addition to recording.- HJP is also a complete multitrack editor, while Spreaker Studio is not designed to be an editor.- Both are localized in multiple languages, including Castilian (aka “Spanish”), and I included screenshots of each program in Castilian.
