Cooking oils are fundamental to culinary practices worldwide, bringing unique flavor, texture, and nutritional profile. The variety of cooking oils available today is vast, ranging from traditional options like olive oil and butter to more modern choices like avocado and coconut oil. One of the most widely recognized cooking oils is olive oil, particularly extra virgin olive oil. This oil is appreciated for its rich flavor and high monounsaturated fats, which are popular and support heart health by reducing harmful cholesterol levels. Olive oil is ideal for salad dressings, low to medium-heat cooking, and drizzling over finished dishes. However, its low smoke point makes it less suitable for high-heat methods like deep-frying. In contrast, refined olive oil has a higher smoke point and can handle more heat, though it lacks the robust flavor of its extra virgin counterpart. Another popular oil is coconut oil, which has gained a reputation for its unique composition of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). The body metabolizes these fats differently, potentially providing a quick energy source. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature and has a distinct tropical flavor, making it a favorite in baking and sautéing. However, its high saturated fat content has sparked debate among health experts, with some cautioning against excessive consumption due to potential links to increased cholesterol levels.Oils with high smoke points are essential for high-heat cooking methods like frying. With its mild flavor and impressive smoke point, Avocado oil is an excellent choice for searing, grilling, and roasting. It is also rich in monounsaturated fats and vitamin E, contributing to its heart-healthy profile. Similarly, peanut oil, commonly used in Asian cuisine, is another high-smoke-point oil that adds a nutty flavor to stir-fries and deep-fried dishes. Its stability at high temperatures makes it a reliable option for frying.Canola oil, derived from rapeseed, is another versatile option with a neutral taste and a moderate smoke point. It is low in saturated fat and contains a precious balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, making it a heart-healthy choice for baking, sautéing, and frying. Conversely, butter and ghee (clarified butter) are cherished for their rich, creamy flavors. Butter is a world staple in baking and other applications and adds depth to sauces and sautéed dishes, but its high saturated fat content should be used in moderation. With its lactose and casein removed, Ghee has a higher smoke point and is suitable for higher-heat cooking. It is also a key ingredient in many traditional Indian dishes.Seed oils, such as sunflower, safflower, and grapeseed oil, are often praised for their light flavors and high smoke points. These oils are typically high in polyunsaturated fats, particularly omega-6 fatty acids. Moderation in use and consumption is key when incorporating these oils into your diet. More importantly, continue to document yourself for better options.Health considerations are paramount when choosing cooking oils. Oils high in unsaturated fats, such as olive, avocado, and canola oil, are generally considered healthier due to their potential to improve cholesterol levels and drastically reduce The risk of heart disease. Trans fats, primarily found in partially hydrogenated oils, are particularly harmful and should be avoided altogether. They are linked to increased risks of heart disease and other chronic conditions. In addition to health, the environmental impact of oil production is an essential factor to consider. Palm oil, for instance, is widely used in processed foods and has a high smoke point, but its selection and production are often associated with deforestation and habitat destruction. Opting for sustainably sourced palm oil or alternative oils can help mitigate these tragic environmental concerns.Read the Complete text here.

I Checked Myself Into a Hospital in India for 21 Days

I didn't just go to India. I checked myself into a hospital for 21 days. I let go of my business, my routine, my Western way of life—and I surrendered to a deep, ancient healing process. I was bathed by women half my size, scrubbed down with herbs, and forced to slow down in a way I never had before. This is what happened.   Why I Did This I reached a breaking point. Numb toes, neuropathy, panic attacks, extreme stress, feeling trapped in my body—it all led me to this decision. My body was screaming at me. And I knew I needed something more than another diet, another break, another surface-level fix. I discovered Pancha Karma, an ancient Ayurvedic cleanse for detoxing not just the body, but the mind and soul. I decided to go all in. I closed down my business, leaving everything behind. Arrival at Vaidyagrama: Entering Another World This was a hospital—not a spa. There were basic rooms, strict routines, and repetitive rituals. Getting naked was a daily ritual. The towels were tiny, and loincloths were used for coverage. For the first time, I was truly seen. The doctors and staff infused ancient wisdom with medicine. Prayer and spiritual connection were a part of every treatment. Everything was done with deliberate slowness. There was no soap, no shampoo, no rushing—just pure, purposeful care for the body. The Treatments: Surrendering to the Process Red juice treatment. I lay on a wooden slab, while three tiny Indian women poured warm red juice over my body again and again, staining my skin crimson. Oil massages & herbal scrubs. I was massaged daily by women who saw bodies in a way I never had—practical, neutral, without judgment. Ghee treatment. I was fed butter and broth for 21 days. As this happened, it was not only my body that became cleansed, but also my mind in its relationship to food. Everything here was intentional. Every drop of oil, every movement, every prayer. It was about more than the body—it was about resetting something deep inside me. My Body Was No Longer an Enemy Western culture teaches us to battle our bodies. Ayurveda teaches us to nurture, honor, and support them. For the first time in my life, I wasn't trying to change my body. I was caring for it. I released old narratives. My body isn't something to fix—it's something to listen to. What shifted for me: I stopped seeing my size as "wrong." I understood slowness as healing instead of laziness. I learned to receive care instead of always giving. What I Took Home with Me The real healing started after I left. In the West, we treat exhaustion like a badge of honor. In India, I learned that rest is sacred. I made changes in my daily life—diet, movement, self-talk, and most importantly, prioritizing inner peace over external productivity.   Closing Thought Would I do it again? Absolutely. This wasn't just a cleanse. It was a complete reset—of my body, my mind, and the way I relate to myself. And I think more of us need that.

Send Bite Me a Text!Stovetop cannabis-infused popcorn just might revolutionize your snack game forever. This episode unveils the surprisingly simple method for creating perfectly popped kernels without specialized equipment, while maximizing the potency of your cannabis-infused fat.Forget everything you thought you knew about popcorn preparation. Many of us grew up with air poppers or chemical-laden microwave bags, but the traditional pot method delivers superior results with minimal effort. The key revelation comes in the timing of when to add your infused ghee or butter - not during the popping process (which exposes cannabinoids to potentially degrading high heat), but drizzled over the freshly popped kernels. This approach preserves potency while allowing for precise, individualized dosing.Ghee emerges as the hero ingredient in this technique, with its high smoke point preventing sogginess while delivering rich, buttery flavour. Just a half cup of unpopped kernels transforms into a generous eight cups of finished popcorn, perfect for solo enjoyment or sharing with friends at different tolerance levels. The method takes only about five minutes from start to finish, making it an ideal weeknight treat that combines nostalgic comfort with modern cannabis cuisine. What edible creation should I explore next? Send Bite Me a Text!Discover why ghee might be the secret weapon missing from your cannabis kitchen. This golden, clarified butter not only offers a rich, nutty flavour that elevates any recipe, but its unique properties make it arguably the perfect medium for cannabis infusions.Unlike regular butter with its 350°F smoke point, ghee can handle temperatures up to 485°F without burning—giving you greater cooking flexibility while protecting those precious cannabinoids. As a nearly 100% fat substance, ghee excels at binding with THC and other cannabinoids, potentially creating more potent infusions than other fats. For those with dietary restrictions, there's more good news: the clarification process removes milk solids, making ghee suitable for many people with lactose sensitivities. We walk through the complete process of creating cannabis-infused ghee at home, from decarboxylation to infusion techniques, including an intriguing discussion about whether traditional long infusion times are actually necessary. Could 30 minutes be just as effective as 2-3 hours? In this episode of Wake Up and Read the Labels, host Jen Smiley dives deep into clean eating, the art of gathering around the table, and the truth about the ingredients in our food. Joining her is Leah Delyte, chef, educator, and owner of EAT Marketplace, who shares her inspiring journey of using food to foster joy, health, and connection.Disclaimer:The content provided by Wake Up and Read the Labels and Jen Smiley is for informational purposes only and is not intended as medical advice. Jen Smiley is not a licensed nutritionist, dietitian, or health professional. All recommendations and insights are based on her personal research and experiences. This supports our ability to bring you quality content. Key Takeaways:The Connection Between Food and Health: What you eat directly impacts your gut health, immunity, and overall wellbeing. Modern wheat and processed foods differ drastically from those of the past due to genetic modification, chemical use, and ultra-processing. Tips for Eating Clean: Read labels and avoid products with more than 4-5 ingredients. Watch out for misleading "organic" claims on processed foods, and stick to whole, unprocessed ingredients. Regenerative Farming Is the Future: Regenerative farming rebuilds soil health through practices like animal rotation, producing more nutrient-dense foods while reducing environmental harm. Reducing Food Waste: Upcycle kitchen scraps into stocks, soups, or casseroles, and compost when possible. Simple cleaning methods like vinegar rinses make even non-organic produce safer to eat. Family Meals Matter: Regular family meals improve self-esteem, lower risks of substance abuse among children, and foster joy, connection, and better emotional health for everyone. Navigating Dining Out: Ask restaurants what oils they use (opt for butter, olive oil, or ghee over seed oils), stick to smaller local spots, and use tools like the Seed Oil Scout app to find seed oil-free options. Finding Joy in Food: Cooking and sharing meals can be joyful and meaningful. Simple steps like prepping meals with music or loved ones turn a chore into an enjoyable ritual. Leah's Philosophy: "Vote with your dollars" by supporting ethical, sustainable brands and farms. Food is more than nourishment—it's a way to connect, heal, and bring people together.Leah Delyte's Links:Website: https://eatmarketplace.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chefleahdelyte/?hl=enLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/leahdelyte/Jen's Links:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wakeupandreadthelabels Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WakeUpAndReadTheLabelsThe Wake Up Label Letter: https://jensmiley.substack.com/subscribeApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wake-up-and-read-the-labels/id1618784569 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7v3WcgicHQrjU9iCEcLZLX

"It struck me when I was doing the book that people preparing an Onam sadhya were putting together 25-30 dishes that were all gluten free and mostly vegan too. In fact, a sadhya can be fully vegan. The payasam can use almond or oats milk instead of regular cow's milk. Coconut yogurt will, of course, be the best substitute as it fits the flavour profile of the food. Ghee is perhaps the only thing that you will have to give up on. Unlike the old days, now people, even in Kerala, rarely cook the sadhya at home. They order it. I hope that my book will act as a trigger to get people to actually cook a sadhya. Because the process is engaging. There is a pattern to it. The way you cook it, the way you serve it... It's not like any other meal. It's almost like a ritual. There's also a lot of discipline that comes with serving a sadhya. You will find Ayurveda reflected quite elaborately in it. It is not about just shoving some food onto a banana leaf." - Arun Kumar TR, author, Feast on a Leaf; The Onam Sadhya Cookbook, talks to Manjula Narayan about the many delicious dishes that are part of an Onam celebration, the legend of Mahabali, his own childhood memories of the festival at his ancestral home that form the base of this book, and the imaginative use of yams, jackfruit and banana in Kerala sadhya cuisine.

#188 More Butter Flavor Than Butter - Farnosh Family, Sun Ghee

As we continue learning of the rich food industry in Colorado, our Meaningful Marketplace hosts are again joined by Mike Gabel of CSU Spur's Food Innovation Center, https://agsci.colostate.edu/spur/food-innovation-center/. Our guest today started to change her relationship with food after her children were born. That's when Farnosh Family, owner of Sun Ghee, decided on her health journey. Farnosh started with many diets eliminating gluten, then soy, dairy and other top allergens. Nothing seemed to help until she zeroed in on non- or minimal-processed foods and a large part of that regimen was cooking with ghee, which is the oil of butter, often referred to as clarified butter. It's the best part of butter, can be used to cook, sauté or roast any food and is lactose free. It is the most nutrient rich part of the dairy food. Farnosh began experimenting infusing the ghee with spices and herbs and found not only a tasty new food, but a healthy new food as well. The entrepreneur in Farnosh spurred her to think about selling her ghee in boutique shops around her town but quickly found out you don't do that with food, it is a much more regulated business. Farnosh didn't really want to go the retail route with all its rules, so she chose to begin sales direct to consumers under the umbrella of the cottage food laws in Colorado. In a story we have told many times on this show, it was farmers markets where Farnosh enjoyed her first successes and her first consumer feedback. That easing into the business turned out to be pure gold for Farnosh, as she gained not only tremendous acceptance of her product, but found out what consumers wanted from her ghee, what questions they had and set her up to ramp up production and grow her product line. Farnosh used the feedback in her packaging design, her labeling and what she would say on the package. This early knowledge was instrumental in moving her business into the retail level, where she is now in full swing. The farmers market experience was about a year in the making when Farnosh moved into a commercial kitchen space to ramp up production and sell through retail channels. After about three years of growing, she has partnered with CSU and that relationship has been the catalyst for scaling her business in both retail and wholesale channels. That fortunate partnership happened because Farnosh attended a CSU food event. As she was starting to leave, our host Mike Gabel invited everyone for a tour of the commercial kitchen facilities. After viewing the equipment, Farnosh realized it was everything she needed and wanted for her dream and the bond was set. Farnosh has recently worked a distribution agreement for sales in Texas, so her footprint is growing rapidly. Living in Denver also makes it easy for Farnosh to pop in on the CSU campus kitchen when needed. Farnosh's ghee highlights unique flavors such as sage and rosemary along with cardamom and ashwagandha. These flavors help enhance users' breakfast, appetizers, entrees, and desserts. The Cause of Lower Abdominal Cramping Pain

Today we're going to talk about the best and worst foods for lower abdominal pain. There are many different causes of lower abdominal cramping or pain. But, in my opinion, we can usually trace the problem back to the person's diet and malabsorption. If a person has a problem with malabsorption, they may also experience bloating, diarrhea, or loose stool. The more inflammation or gut problems you have, the more sensitive you're going to be to certain things like gluten, lactose, fruit, grains, legumes, beans, nuts, and seeds. A good thing to consume would be a stew with homemade bone broth. The collagen in the stew is great for inflammation in the gut. Adding vegetables to the stew is also fantastic because they will cook down to the point where they shouldn't bother your digestive system. High-quality saturated animal fats are important to help support the gut. This means the meat you add to your stew should have skin on it and should be fatty. Lactose-free whole-milk kefir or lactose-free goat milk kefir is also great to help support healthy digestion. To support the colon, you may want to consume probiotic foods. Ghee and fermented vegetables may also be beneficial. The best vegetable for digestive issues is cabbage. This may be because it contains sulforaphane or certain phytonutrients. Even people who have digestive problems like gastritis or irritable bowel syndrome may find it easier to consume cabbage.
