Commons & The Second Nature Podcast On: What Actually Happens To Your Clothing Donations?

Conscious Chatter with Kestrel Jenkins

This episode is a little different than what you're used to, as it's a special swap with Commons and their Second Nature podcast. It's an amazing listen and I'm stoked to share it with y'all! “I think this is inspiring people to move away from being passive consumers to instead becoming stewards of their belongings and have that sense of responsibility and it goes beyond this individual action…For us, democratizing repair isn't just a luxury or a trend, it's something essential to creating this future where sustainability and equity guide the way forward.” -Sumaq Alvarado del Aguida, Suay Sew Shop This month's theme is – HOW TOXINS FROM OUR CLOTHES MOVE AROUND THE WORLD. This episode by Second Nature gets into the layers around donated clothing, how BIG of an issue it is, and how global it truly is. From talking about the recent devastating fire in Kantamanto Market in Accra, Ghana, to the onslaught of clothing donations that overwhelmed facilities in Los Angeles after the wildfires in January this year, this episode explores some interested parallels and disturbing realities around the low quality of so much of the clothing that ends up in the donation cycle, as well as the harmful impacts that toxins within those clothes can have on the communities where they land. You'll hear from Sumaq of Suay Sew Shop in LA on the excess of crappy clothing that was donated to them amidst the wildfires, and how they are working to get creative with those textiles. One thing I want to highlight is how Sumaq shares that we need to become “stewards of our belongings”. Passing it over to Katelan, the host of Second Nature, who will share more with you in this special episode!  Second Nature Episode Follow Second Nature on Instagram

I am Katelan Pittick, a current Miss World Australia National Finalist who is incredibly honoured to represent my beautiful state of Victoria in the upcoming National Finals. While I am passionate about pageantry, my true love lies with the ocean and its incredible marine life. I have been fortunate enough to scuba dive and snorkel with a variety of species, including reef sharks, manta rays, and turtles, thanks to my mother who introduced me to the beauty of the ocean at a young age during a dive through the Great Barrier Reef. Aside from my affinity for the ocean, I am also pursuing a course in Real Estate Practice with the goal of becoming a qualified agent who prioritizes compassion and understanding towards clients navigating new chapters in their lives. In addition, I have been actively supporting Variety - The Children's Charity through fundraising and volunteering to assist children living with disability, illness, and disadvantage. Having been diagnosed with severe scoliosis at the age of 11 and undergoing a full-length spinal fusion, I established a personal project named “myscoliosis” through the Miss World "Beauty with a Purpose" initiative. My goal is to increase awareness of this prevalent condition and offer a support platform for the scoliosis community, where individuals can find inspiration, comfort, and reassurance. In an age where people can, and do, share every part of their lives publicly…what does it mean to be a public Witch? What's awesome about sharing your Witchcraft with the world….and what's not so great? Multimedia artist, occultist and writer Katelan Foisy shares her journey with being a public Witch in both art and life. We discuss the joy in sharing your Witchcraft with the world, and compassionate boundary-setting when people aren't so kind about our Witchniness. Happier digressions include Kanani's sustenance, holiday antics, Courtney's travel woes, and the Magickal properties of orange. A listener is about to spend a few intense days with their mother. Her first crush was Nosferatu, she started reading Burroughs at 12, she's fused Roma and Santeria, and now Katelan Foisy joins the show to talk about making art, magic, and a personal mythology. We get into the course of her artistic career, the perils of a public persona, the experience of making art for Smashing Pumpkins and William Patrick Corgan (& the genesis of their friendship), understanding the tarot as storyboards, learning to paint mosaics to make the Sibyls Oraculum, the allure of old hotels, the duality of Al Capone, and why she traded the East River for Lake Michigan. Plus, the great advice she got from Molly Crabapple, forming a Third Mind with Vanessa Sinclair, her adherence to William Burroughs' twin beliefs that you can write your way out of any problem and that photographs can change the future, and how her art tries to capture the Romany notion of the Stopping Place. • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal

Four levels of support. Bonus content. Free shit. Click here to check it out. Our guests this time around are Tayannah Lee McQuillar and Katelan Foisy. They have recently collaborated on a project called The Sibyls Oraculum: Oracle of the Black Doves of Africa, which is a system of divination inspired by the Libyan Sibyls, the African prophetesses of the classical world. The deck was created by Tayannah, a tarot reader and researcher of religion, esoterica, and mysticism, and drawn by Katelan, a visual artist, writer, and occultist who specializes in vintage style mixed media art and photography. This contemporary oracle pays homage to the oft forgotten African founding mothers of the sibylline traditions. Drawing on both the African and the Classical traditions, the card art is in a style reminiscent of the Libyan mosaics popular in the 1st century B.C.E. And in the deck’s accompanying guidebook, Tayannah details how to consult the oracle, providing in-depth write-ups about the meaning of each of the 44 cards and the symbolic language represented by each card’s imagery. There’s also a history of the Sibyls of the ancient world and an exploration of the continuing Sibyl tradition in North Africa today. But the framework for our conversation here comes from the true intention of the deck, which is to directly address the spiritual lessons underlying the seeker’s question, and to facilitate self-examination and decision-making, and help improve the likelihood of success and broaden the perspective of the situation. Now, we did have some audio and connection issues, so that cut this chat a bit shorter than usual. You will notice Tayannah’s connection got better about halfway through, because we had to reconnect a couple times during this call. But please do stick with it, because I quite liked it, all things considered. And I hope you do as well. Nathan Dube is the author of the novel “A Labyrinth of Dreams”, which lays the foundation for our conversation here. The book doubles as a hypersigil and is about 18-year-old Julian Crane who, after the murder of his grandfather, leaves the Christian faith to study occultism and the magical arts and discovers what he calls the realm of the seven dream worlds. It caps off a nice trilogy of sorts with the two previous episodes with Dick Khan and Ian WIlson. So let’s kickstart this heart and cast this pod off into a place where the highest form of magic is and has always been art, and where that art is indeed resistance.
