“It's just the way music is consumed. My kids went to summer camp, and they wanted to, like, bring music with them. But they're not allowed to have electronic devices, like, they can't bring a phone. And my son was, like, ‘Oh, I'll just take my phone.' And I'm like, ‘No, you don't understand, like, you're not going to have internet.' And they're like, ‘Well, how do I get the music from, like, Spotify, like, on my phone?' I'm like, ‘You can't without internet.' And just the whole concept, like, you used to carry a record or even a cassette or a CD, and it was physical, and you had it.” – Sherene Strausberg This episode is the second half of my conversation with Emmy-nominated art director, sound engineer, and founder and creative director of 87th Street Creative Sherene Strausberg as we talk about her work to bring diversity to sound, how streaming audio is creating a generation gap and what that might mean for marketers, and whether the days of going to the movie theater have come and gone. (0:00:00) - Creating Audio for VisualsOur conversation picks up as Sherene shares her approach to combining visual and sonic elements for an effective branding strategy, and her recent work on a particularly compelling, and challenging, animation project. “It was for a nonprofit named Womankind, the opening part of this animated video I did for them was about, you know, these really devastating statistics,” she tells us. “But then it kind of changed tone... and so we needed a real shift, and no track was able to really do that in the timing that we needed. So I ended up using two different tracks and through the power of music editing we were able to very smoothly change that tone.” She tells us more about her work with diverse composers and voices, and partnering with such groups as One Percent for the Planet. “I make animated videos,” she explains, “I can't clean the carbon out of the air with my business, right? That's not what I do… but it's finally getting me to put sort of, like, you know, my money where my mouth is.”(0:08:24) - Evolution of Audio TechnologyWe look at how sound technology has moved from big and loud to small and private, and how sound has shifted from a communal to a personal experience. “You know, go back to the ‘80s when suddenly there were Walkmans and you were listening on these tiny headphones,” she says, “but then it became the tiny music file that went into the tiny headphones.” The discussion turns to where such a trend might lead, and she wonders if a theatrical experience like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice could ever be replaced by streaming media. “Sure, yeah, it fills your peripheral vision,” she says about virtual and augmented reality. “It's bigger in scope but smaller in experience, you're obviously not experiencing it communally... I feel like I'll be saying to my kids, ‘In my day we went to movie theaters.'"(0:17:02) - Power of Sound in MediaWe discuss

And I got to the end of that scene, and, like, he lifts his bow up, and I started clapping in the theater. And I realized that that film had just totally taken me out of the movie theater and put me in, like, a concert hall. And I was like, ooh, I want to do that. When sharing our own testimonies and stories about our faith in Christ with Muslims, it is essential to know some basic differences between Christianity and Islam. What do Muslims believe about the Trinity? What is the true nature of God? What are the fundamental differences between the God of the Bible and Allah of the Qur'an? This week we continue our discussion with  Dr. Sherene Khouri, author and assistant professor of Arabic at Liberty University of Virginia, about her new book, Triune Rationality - A Trinitarian Response to Islamic Monotheism. Dr. Khouri provides us with helpful historical insights and key theological concepts that will both enrich and better inform our apologetic conversations with our Muslim friends and neighbors.Sherene Nicholas Khouri (PhD, Liberty University) is assistant professor of Arabic at Liberty University and also teaches courses on theology, apologetics, Arabic Christianity, and Islam in the John W. The Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is perhaps one of the most difficult and challenging doctrines of the Christian faith. Perhaps it is nowhere more challenging to explain than in  dialogue with Muslims, who believe that Christianity is blasphemously polytheistic, teaching that there are literally three distinct Gods. Our guest this week and next on the Profile, Dr. Sherene Khouri assistant professor of Arabic at Liberty University of Virginia joins to discuss her new book, Triune Rationality - A Trinitarian Response to Islamic Monotheism. Dr. Khouri provides a comprehensive historical look back to three lesser-known Christian apologists who lived during the time of the Golden Age of Islam and wrote apologetic defenses of the Trinity in Arabic to their Islamic contemporaries. Dr. Khouri's insights and research are immensely helpful for anyone in dialogue with Muslims today.Sherene Nicholas Khouri (PhD, Liberty University) is assistant professor of Arabic at Liberty University and also teaches courses on theology, apologetics, Arabic Christianity, and Islam in the John W. Sherene shared insights on what attendees can expect from the 2024 event and highlighted the impressive lineup of presenters this year, which will include a mix of industry leaders, innovators and government representatives. These speakers are set to cover a wide range of topics, showcasing the depth and breadth of the global mining sector. One of the key features of IMARC 2024 is the introduction of several new elements designed to enhance the overall experience for participants. This year's conference will place greater emphasis on sustainability and the integration of cutting-edge technology within mining operations. These updates reflect the evolving needs of the industry and underscore IMARC's commitment to staying at the forefront of mining innovation. In discussing the emerging trends shaping the mining landscape, Sherene pointed to themes such as decarbonisation, critical minerals and automation. These areas are becoming increasingly important as the industry adapts to global demands for sustainable practices and the transition to green energy solutions. The drive toward cleaner energy sources is reshaping the way companies approach mining, making these trends central to the industry's future. Sherene attributed IMARC's ongoing success and strong reputation to its ability to bring together diverse voices from across the sector, creating a platform for valuable networking and knowledge sharing. She noted that the conference has consistently provided actionable insights and fostered collaborations that have driven progress in mining. Sherene Seikaly is Associate Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She's the editor of a number of academic journals, including the Journal of Palestine Studies. She's also a policy member of Al-Shabaka and the Palestinian Policy Network. As a historian of capitalism, consumption, and development in the modern Middle East, she has an overriding concern with how individuals, groups, and governments use concepts and material practices to shape the body, the self, and the other. We're at a point now where the death toll in Gaza has climbed to more than 30,000 and yet we still can't expect an end to the merciless, genocidal attack on Palestinians by the Netenyahu regime in Israel anytime soon. A team of researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Johns Hopkins University just released a report called "Crisis in Gaza: Scenario-Based Health Impact Projections" that says we can still save thousands of lives by establishing a ceasefire that would allow the delivery of humanitarian aid as Gaza is throttled by Israel. It describes the situation by saying that, "In case of a ceasefire now, we would be saving around 75,000 lives." That means that a continuation of the military assault on Rafa will lead to a humanitarian catastrophe at an unimaginable scale. In this terrifying moment, I spoke with Sherene Seikaly about her sense of the roots of this overwhelming, punishing violence in colonial logics of dehumanization. It comes from civilizational hierarchies that have already been established to secure colonial relations and render whole populations disposable. It also comes from silencing and denial. In Sheren's words, there has been a “repression of people calling for Palestinian liberation” that allows the untold horror to keep happening without the resistance and rage that could end it. For a long time we have been in a situation where “knowledge itself,” she says, “has become a target of war.” This “epistemicide” means there is no relationship between politics and the truth in Israel, there is a tacit encouragement of the genocide by American imperialism and its agenda in the region, which lets the US continue arming Israel with no conditions whatsoever. This obscuring of the reality of genocide, and the jubilation with which settlers are making Gaza unlivable, is forcing Sherene, she says, to question everything that she thought she knew about the world or the notion of a rules-based international order. We talk about her book Men of Capital, which is an untold history of the Arab world through the lens of Palestinian statehood. She says that “Maps are actually violent processes” of colonial and state formation and fundamentally “constructions.” She explains why Palestine contains “an abundance of lessons” about the future we're heading toward. But we start with the question of the Palestinian child, the eviction of Palestinian people from the category of the human, and the spectre of a violence that aims to erase generations of Palestinian people that have not had a chance at a life.

I think it's easy to pigeonhole our health - whether that's hormonal, sexual, menstrual or overall health - to being something physical. Like, yes, we need certain foods, lots of fiber, healthy fats, good protein. And yes, we need to be hydrated. And move our bodies. And get outside. And make sure we're pooping. Without those things, we can't actually feel integratively well, for sure. But something that I think is missing from A LOT of holistic health conversations is how systemic, social and cultural wellbeing (or imbalances) impacts our health. Bc let's be honest, MOST of the systemic structures that hold our lives together on a wider scale are a mess.Whether its capitalism, or racism, or classism, or sexism, or oppressive forces using power-over-to-get-what-they-want-through-whatever-means, our bodies and minds and spirits are all affected. So I appreciate how today's guest Sherene Cauley defines wellness from the lens of "love, connection and home." That those three pillars elucidate a well person but can also be expanded out to define a well regional community, or even a well global community. That cultural wellbeing on that level is an *integral* part of individual wellbeing. That we are not separate from our environments, from our neighbors, from each other. Sherene is a health coach, and honestly I think a visionary guide that helps us to reflect thoughtfully on what we're doing and why we're doing it. And part of how she encourages that is to start noticing your daily rituals (or incorporating new ones) and infusing them with multiple layers of meaning. By bringing mindfulness and curiosity into our daily rituals, we can begin to notice what's changing and also any underlying behavior patterns or thoughts. These kinds of daily rituals can bring more connection to our lives, in a myriad of ways. Listen to learn:how Sherene defines wellness from a cultural wellbeing levelwhat led her to uncover some of the systemic imbalances going onhow health coaching informs her work towards changing patternswhat her definition of a ritual is, and how simple they can beways to infuse meaning and reflectiveness into your ritualsa sneaky way to incorporate a new healthy behaviorthoughts on how to cultivate mindfulness on social mediasome ideas on how to bring ancestral connection into your daily lifeResources:Today's shownotes: Get Sherene's links to website and social mediaEpisode: The mesentery with Abigail Rose ClarkEpisode: Your womb is a portal with Sepideh HakimzadehCheck out Womb Attune in Northport, ME Feb 18th 2024 w Chaya Leia AronsonIf you loved this episode, share it with a friend, or take a screenshot and share on social media and tag me @herbalwombwisdom.  And if you love this podcast, leave a rating & write a review! Having won a national composition competition in high school, she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Indiana University School of Music, where she completed two bachelor's degrees in four years. Film scores she wrote in her first career, as a film composer, have been heard on AMC, Spike TV and Netflix. Recent clients of 87th Street Creative have included Walmart, American Express and Healthline. Sherene lives with her husband, mother, and children on the coast of Maine. Sherene founded The Nurtured Life in 2003, a Maryland-based wellness service to build mindful life practices into everyday living. As a mother and connected community member with an academic background in education, she recognized the need for holistic early childhood education and designed The Nurtured Life to offer guidance to families in communication, physiological awareness, natural world connection, and whole foods sustenance. In 2008, Sherene completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training with Diane Finlayson and, in 2009, a certificate in pregnancy yoga to integrate yoga practices into family care. The role of The Nurtured Life naturally broadened to become a nexus for practical and emotional family support with the launch of a whole foods purchasing cooperative, a network of peer support, and coaching services for parents and families. As someone who has struggled throughout her life with dyslexia, she began to recognize how her neurodivergent sensitivities help her to tune into her internal and external environments, which not only allow her to experience her spirituality more fully but also to guide others in healing practices that are responsive to mind and body. In 2018, Sherene completed a Master of Arts in Health and Wellness Coaching from Maryland University of Integrative Health and formally became a wellness coach. The Nurtured Life has evolved as a wellness coaching service for clients across the country and includes workshops on attuning to our inner and outer realities to build supportive, sustainable lifestyles.Sherene's academic research has examined the effects of hegemonic white patriarchy on spirituality and human development. As an American and woman of Iranian heritage, she recognizes both socially and personally the harm caused by systems of oppression and the need to actively cultivate a culture of well-being. Sherene has been a part of the group coaching program, as well as the alumni aftercare group. Today she shares with us her experience with multiple childhood moves, yo-yo dieting, body dysmorphia, and taking back the power to make decisions in her life. Topics include: [4:25] Sherene's earliest memories about her body, experiencing a growing awareness of her body and shape. Learning how to be a human being and what society's acceptable standards are. Feeling out of place as a tween following a big move to a rural public school. [17:14] Becoming more aware of food as a pre-teen and teen. The way other people factor into our relationship with our body. Self-medicating by using food as a numbing agent. [24:43] Expressing herself through artistic and creative outlets as a teenager but still feeling out of place. Falling in and out of various diets and health fads while watching her mom go through Weight Watchers. The impact body dysmorphia and perception has on what we experience as reality. [33:45] Canceling plans and making choices based on how she felt about her body. The way that our brains tell us we can't do something and takes away our power to make a choice based on what feels safe or unsafe. The difference between uncomfortable and unsafe and the ongoing daily practice of conscious awareness. [41:53] Making the decision in her 40s to be more aware of how she feels and embrace the holistic mind-body-soul system. Asking ourselves how we really want our lives to be and beginning to move toward making that a reality. [49:02] Looking for a spiritual solution, an initial interest in the Gabriel Method, and finding Lisa. Realizing that a diet wasn't what she needed, it was a full holistic overhaul. Finding safety in the OOTC community, growing on every group call, and allowing herself to be more open. [1:04:09] Sherene's biggest takeaways from being in group. Being aware and allowing, letting go of our resistance to reality. Join us for a Community Reflection and Integration call following our 21 day journal challenge! Roe v. Wade is at risk of being overturned by the Supreme Court. Currently, the landmark decision allows for "Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides a fundamental 'right to privacy' that protects a pregnant woman's liberty to choose whether to have an abortion." It allows states to balance between rights of the women and the rights of the fetus. Some states will ban all forms of abortion if this is overturned since the right to choice is not a law. This week, Sherene and Nichole discuss the ramifications of the loss of body autonomy and women's right to choose. Bible breakdown for this week is Genesis 32. Why Are We Shouting? with Jill Salzman

What's In This Episode: Do you have contracts in place with all of your clients?  You'll never guess what happens when you decide to work with someone and don't sign a contract and then they change their tune.  (Spoiler alert: it's not good.) Guest Sherene Strausberg of 87th Street Creative shares her big business blunder about that time she skipped signing contracts with her clients – and since everybody's doing it, Sherene and Jill wanna take a moment to remind you why that's a really bad idea. Jill Salzman turns the mundane into inspiration and transforms the impossible into the achievable. Through defying expectations and breaking the rules, she succeeds in inspiring entrepreneurs to figure out what works for them by using meaningful action to create positive results. Jill is the author of The Best Business Book In The World* (according to my mom) and the Amazon best-seller, Found It: A Field Guide for Mom Entrepreneurs. She's shared the speaker stage with Richard Branson, Sheryl Sandberg, Daymond John, Marilu Henner, and Desmond Tutu among others, and professed her love of Eddie Vedder in her TEDx talk on 11/11/11. She hosts the top-rated entertaining business podcast, Why Are We Shouting?, a question she asks herself daily. CNNMoney calls her a “mommy mogul.” MSN Live says she's a “Cool Mom Entrepreneur We Love.” Forbes rated her a Top 100 Champion Small Business Influencer and voted The Founding Moms one of the Top 10 Websites For Entrepreneurs. When she's not speaking to audiences in patterned leggings or podcasting from her basement, she fruitlessly tries to convince her daughters that cassette tapes actually existed.
