California announces an ambitious plan to ban the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035. Residents of Klamath River in Siskiyou County share how they're recovering from the McKinney Fire, which destroyed most of their town. Comedian Keith Lowell Jensen joins us ahead of his comedy special at The Sofia in downtown Sacramento. Ban on the sale of new gas-powered cars
Comedian Turner Sparks has a new comedy album out on September 30th. It's called Double Happiness. And yes, it's no coincidence that it is literally the same title as Slow Gherkin's debut album. Turner was a huge ska fan growing up. And he wanted his record's title to give a wink to the ska scene. In fact, not only did he attend wild ska shows in Sacramento at Capitol Garage, BoJangles, El Dorado Saloon, and the Crest Theater, but he also had his own band: Fat Kids On Mopeds. Oh and one of the bands that he idolized was Link 80. He kind of thinks co-host Adam Davis is a big deal. And we go deep into Sacramento lore on this episode, with copious discussion of comedians Keith Lowell Jensen and Johnny Taylor Jr, some love for local group Lesdystics, and Turner points out just how much ska was in the Sacramento-based film Lady Bird. How did I miss that?We also discuss Turner's time running a Mr. Softee ice cream truck empire in China, his recent trip to El Salvador to find out if in fact the country really is run on bitcoin or not (For a potential "Lost In America" TV episode), how politically polarizing stand-up comedy has become, and his brief time running the Sacramento Anti-Racist Action chapter--at the age of 17! Oh, we also talk about how he became friends with SKAmedian Ian Fidance. It had something to do with the hardcore band H20. Support the show

Keith Lowell Jensen is a comedian. He doesn't use music in his act. He doesn't play in a band on the side. But he started performing as a frontman in bands growing up, and that experience gave him a head start in comedy. He began his comedy career abruptly with Spike & Mike's Festival of Animation as kind of a one man cover band of comedy. He's performed with a lot of great artists, including an unexpected gig opening for Wu-Tang Clan. He's performed in China as a judge for a comedy show and has written a children's book. He also has a new special on Amazon Prime, Keith Lowell Jensen, Not For Rehire. Watch it, but don't expect one-liners. Keith also gives us some exclusive dog breeding content, so you're welcome. I met comedian Keith Lowell Jensen shortly after I moved to Sacramento in 2013. We first got to know each other when I interviewed him for the local newspaper, Sacramento News and Review, but soon became friends. Before the pandemic, we were getting wieners on a regular basis. (It technically started as hot dogs for lunch, but soon wieners became synonymous with hanging out) Of the many things we bonded over, a mutual love for ska was high on the list, especially when Keith learned I was writing a book about ska. He insisted that I include him in the book with a chapter called “My Friend Keith Likes Ska.” That didn’t happen, but here we are a few months before In Defense of Ska releases and “My Friend Keith Likes Ska” is now a reality—as a podcast episode. Keith always hires a clown for his birthday partiesIn this episode, Keith talks about local Sacramento band Filibuster (Who Keith attempted to manage for a minute), his love for Fishbone (He was at that crazy Warfield show at the beginning of Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone), and a slew of other topics. One highlight this week comes by way of co-host Adam Davis, who revealed that his childhood church had a “No Skaw dancing” policy at their dances. Scandalous! Check out Keith’s latest special Not For Rehire on Amazon Prime and leave a review. Also be sure to pick up his book Punching Nazis and Other Good Ideas. Keith also has a podcast. Make sure you listen to the episode when he brings on In Defense of Ska author Aaron Carnes. Follow Keith on Twitter. His next book, What I Was Arrested For will be available for pre-order soon. It’s getting released by Clash Books—my book publisher! Do you like this newsletter? You can sign up here Get on the email list at aaroncarnes.substack.com

For my first guest I wanted someone special, someone cool, someone awesome, and I achieved this by having the great Anton Barbeau on for a chat. Dig our conversation about his personal history, his stranglehold on the Sacramento music scene in the 90s, and living and creating now in Europe. On his website, it says this about him: “Anton Barbeau plays "pre-apocalyptic psychedelic pop." He's a Taurus, born in Sacramento and now living by a canal in Berlin. He's made something like 30 albums and has worked with members of XTC, The Soft Boys, the Bevis Frond, Cake, the Loud Family and Mystery Lawn label-mates, the Corner Laughers. Julian Cope got him stoned in Croydon once.”It was a pleasure talking to Anton about the making of his wonderful new album: MANBIRD and about the music scene in Europe and what it’s like to tour and make fans in other countries, including earning doting praise for his music from my fave comedian Stewart Lee.Check out his new DOUBLE album here: manbird.antonbarbeau.com

Getting back in the groove after our first live recording (episodes to come in August) and the big ole 2nd-anniversary David Sedaris episode!Episode 60 is a conversation with comedian Keith Lowell Jensen, whom I started following on twitter last year, because of tweets like this that make me feel better and worse about life in America:I had Keith on my list of people to contact to see about having him on the show, and when his latest album of new material, "Bad Comedy for Bad People," hit #1 on the iTunes charts this spring, it seemed like the time. It was the time! And now is the time to bring that conversation to YOU!We talk about: calling out pervy middle-school teachers, letting go of his grudge on Julie for throwing his BDP cassette across the cafe, Keith's friendship with Robin Williams, and the time he performed for him in the parking lot after a show, TMZ & how much fame is too much fame, and much much more! You can find out more about where to catch Keith live, how to buy any of his 8 or so albums, on his site (click the words "his site" there). Host Ben Rice visits the new Tilted Mash Brewing location to sit down with owners Derrick Prasad and Jonathan Martinez, along with guest Keith Lowell Jensen, to talk coffee and Tilted Mash's recent relocation. Things go sideways, as Ben chose to record during their twice-monthly comedy show Tilted Mashterpiece Theatre, as every comic on the bill (Shahera Hyatt, Diego Curiel, and Christy Farley) pops on the mic, as do Kyle and Kady, the beertenders. Keith has his first alcoholic beverage in years, Ben tells drunk stories, and Jonathan becomes the second guest to admit to trying to steal a statue. This one goes off the rails and back again. Enjoy! And don't forget to find Keith's albums on Stand Up! Records (www.standuprecords.com) or pre-order Keith's first collection of essays, "Punching Nazis and Other Good Ideas" from Amazon. Our August episode is ready! Betsaida LeBron is our guest. Here is her bio from her website: My passion is creating art as a performer and helping others create art as a teacher. At a young age I began entertaining family and friends performing improvised productions in my parents' living room and staging elaborate improvised puppet shows with homemade puppets and sets with my siblings throughout Northern California. I discovered improv by accident in 2009 while studying in Spain and never looked back! I studied theater, psychology, and education in college and am an alum of iO-Chicago and Bay Area Theatre Sports (BATS). I began performing at ComedySportz. In 2011 I co-founded Blacktop Comedy Club in Rocklin, CA. There I had the opportunity to perform in weekly improv shows, taught beginning to advanced improv classes, and directed several improvised genre shows, including a Shakespearean romantic comedy, improvised musical, improvised western, and improvised teen slasher horror film. I also began performing in two indie improv troupes, Yada Yada Yada and Kooky Pants. I've also studied stand-up comedy with Keith Lowell Jensen and performed stand-up sets at Laughs Unlimited Comedy Club, Blacktop Comedy Club, California Comedy Festival, and various other venues throughout Northern California. I strive to be an animated and engaging improviser and enjoy creating characters and vivid worlds on stage with my scene partners. Combining over 10 years of experience in improv and a background in psychology and education, my workshops include a unique blend of acting and life skills, reflecting my philosophy that improv is all about life. Some of the workshops I've given include Improvised Storytelling at the Auburn Hip-Hop Congress, Improvised Musicality at San Francisco's 2016 Femprov Festival, Bold as F**k at the 2016 California Comedy Festival, and my regular workshop series Improv Playhouse. I feel fortunate to do what I love and help others (re)discover their potential.

For extended show notes and more pirate goodies, visit www.UnderTheCrossbones.com Ron Allen and his crew of merry modders deal in pirate video games. I lost track of pirate video games after the first version of Sid Meyer's Pirates many years ago. But there are a lot of cool things happening and PiratesAhoy.net has a lot of it. We all learn about what goes into modding games, how Ron and his folks saved the Pirates of the Caribbean game from obscurity, and what it takes to organize a project that has thousands of volunteers. Plus comedy from Keith Lowell Jensen about robo calls and and a song called "Falling Forward" from Iari Melchor. Steve Hill, Maryellen Hooper and Keith Lowell Jensen are professional comedians. They are also atheists. In this roundtable discussion, Seth Andrews asks them about life on the road (and the stage), how their non-belief in the supernatural influences their material, facing the hecklers, and their desires to make people laugh while, perhaps, also making them think.Steve Hill: http://www.stevehillcomic.comMaryellen Hooper: http://www.maryellenhooper.comKeith Lowell Jensen: http://www.rockass.netVideo link to "Evolution: What the Fossils Say" from Seth's monologue: https://youtu.be/DjFgcOId-ZY
Back on April 4th, I taped a few random interviews at the American Atheist Convention in Memphis, so today I’m posting a few selections from that experience. The first is a 9 minute interview with Dave Kong. Dave was personal friends with Madalyn Murray O’Hare, the founder of American Atheists and has witnessed the movement from the beginning. He served on the board for 27 years. And for those who may have little exposure to Madalyn, I’ve posted an 11 minute excerpt from a speech she gave at the 1972 AA convention, 10 years after she founded the movement. . Next is a 6 minute interview with comedian Keith Lowell Jensen who performed a stand-up routine at the conference. I tacked on a 3 minute excerpt of a bit he performed there. Keith has his own podcast called, “It’s Funny Because” available on iTunes and Facebook. Lastly, I play a fascinating talk given by Dr. Jennifer Michael Hecht called Poetic Atheism. She wrote a book that changed my life called, “Stay: A History of Suicide and the Arguments Against It.” She argues that to say that there is no meaning to life, or that we have to make our own meaning seems misguided and that meaning has always been a part of community and culture, we need not invent it. She earned her Ph.D. from Columbia University in the History of Science and European Cultural History. She is the author of 3 other books, including “Doubt: A History: The Great Doubters and Their Legacy of Innovation from Socrates and Jesus to Thomas Jefferson,” and “The Happiness Myth: The Historical Antidote to What Isn't Working Today.” Subscribe to our podcast on iTunes, TuneIn and most podcast platforms.
