Jace is joined by Skylar Patridge to chat about her upcoming title from Image under the Horizon Experiment imprint, Finders/Keepers. It's an action-adventure story inspired by characters like Indiana Jones, only this time instead of finding relics to place in museums, Ines Guarua is stealing them from museums to return them to their native cultures. Skylar takes about respecting what museums do in preserving and honoring art, but that she along with co-creator/writer Vita Ayala, want to start a conversation about the ethical pitfalls that exist currently with removing artifacts from their indigenous people and possibly exploiting them.
It belongs in a museum? On this week's podcast, we chat with friends and collaborators Vita Ayala and Skylar Patridgeabout their new comic, Finders Keepers, and why they were compelled to tell a "reverse Indiana Jones." Like the other comics in The Horizon Experiment, Finders Keepers flips a classic genre trope on its head and knocks the dust and cobwebs from a well-trodden idea. The hook is powerfully compelling, but as you read through the one-shot, the reader also begins to understand there is much more to the concept below that initial subversive thrill. Robbing from colonizers and returning artifacts to their culture and context, but doing so with all the trappings of a great Indiana Jones story requires a deft hand with multiple genres. Given The Horizon Experiment's pilot program, Vita Ayala and Skylar Patridge must also establish the concept and offer a grand promise of the story's possible future in just a few short pages. However, this challenge is not really different from any other comic book gig. The Horizon Experiment is merely more honest about these commercial practicalities. This week, we dig into all the demands of an Indiana Jones riff. We discuss with Vita Ayala and Skylar Patridge their collaborative process, the thrill of museum heists, and the difficulties of loving classic Hollywood adventure. FOC for Finders Keepers is TODAY (12/9), but the issue will arrive in comic book shops on January 15th. Continue this conversation by following Vita Ayala on Bluesky and their website. And follow Skylar Patridge on Bluesky, Instagram, and their website. Could you elaborate on this concept and share what inspired you to approach the adventure genre from this angle?Your protagonist Ines is a Puerto Rican archaeology student. How did you develop her character, and what aspects of her identity are central to the narrative?Skylar, could you discuss your artistic process for this comic? How did you approach visualizing the settings and characters, especially considering the cultural significance of the artifacts?17Can you share insights into your collaborative process? How did you work together to blend the narrative and visual elements seamlessly?Finders//Keepers is the final installment of The Horizon Experiment. Did this give it any unique perspectives on the overarching project?Given that each one-shot in The Horizon Experiment serves as a potential pilot, I think I know the answer based on how this issue ends but do you have plans or ideas for expanding Finders//Keepers into a full series?Vita, you've mentioned a desire to open up the action-adventure genre to more diverse protagonists. How does this project reflect your personal experiences or aspirations in storytelling? What do you hope readers will feel or think about after finishing Finders//Keepers?
Vita Ayala and Skylar Patridge join the show to talk about their upcoming Image Comics one-shot Finders/Keepers, part of The Horizon Experiment.
"less about, China versus America..what he really believes is the power of community". Award winning co-creator of The Good Asian, sak Pichetshote returns to talk about his visonary new project for Image Comics: a series of five one-shot comic books titled The Horizon Experiment. Each has a unique creative team inventing an original protagonist from a marginalized background set in genres such as horror or espionage, or inspired by icons like Indiana Jones or John Constantine. Pichetshote's entry in the series, The Manchurian, is more than a James Bond who "just so happens to be Chinese"- he is a spy whose identity is core to the narrative. There's also Finders/Keepers from Vita Ayala and Skyler Partridge in which a Boricua archaeologist returns an artifact from a museum to the people from whom it was stolen. The Manchurian, with artists Terry and Rachel Dodson is out now as is The Sacred Damned and more on the way from creative teams that bridge comics, literature, film and television. Here's my 2021 convo about The Good Asian with sak Pichetshote and Alexandre Tefenkgihttps://graphicpolicy.com/2021/05/18/the-good-asian-comic-with-creators-sak-pichetshote-and-alexandre-tefenkgi/

Superhero comics subject their characters to a lot of punishment and trauma as a proxy for character growth, but rarely are they allowed to heal as gracefully as in the Shadow King arc on New Mutants by Vita Ayala and Rod Reis — which makes up the centerpiece of our podcast covering Trials of X vols 7 and 8. Blessed Imbolc, friends! It felt appropriate, so I begin this week's episode with “The Way It Is,” by William Stafford, which was recently shared with me by a friend. I hope you enjoy it, too! Link to read along with this episode's Podcast Notes (including in-episode-referenced links): http://sensationalshegeek.weebly.com/full-archive/ep86-the-dcu-lineup-tarot-history-my-dress-up-darling-february-comics-sins-of-sinister-explained-anime-watch-list-more The episode proper begins with News, including the obituary for Lisa Loring, the original Wednesday Addams from the 1960's TV show. She led a unique life, and I hope her children and grandchildren find comfort in the successful legacy her portrayal of Wednesday left behind. Next in News is some chat about Disney's Dreamlight Valley game, specifically the latest updates that were announced 0:15:37. I've been ridiculously hooked on this game, and am excited to see what content they put out this year! Also announced this week was the "Final Season" of Attack on Titan 0:21:24, which might feel like deja vu, and for good reason! all explained here. Of course, I am going over the newly announced DCU Slate 0:24:35, too. How could I not? I have a good deal of insight on a number of these projects, and would LOVE to hear what others think of the announcements and limited details that were provided! Chat away in the discord, linked below! This week continues part two of our Tarot Studies 0:52:14, moving along this week with a fairly general History of Tarot, which covers a number of historical identities and moments in the cultural relevance of the decks. The Major Arcana is introduced 1:05:54, and then so is the Deck of the Month for February 1:10:08 : Modern Witch Tarot Deck by Lisa Sterle (with an introduction by Vita Ayala). If you recognize those names, it's because they're both pretty heavily involved in the comic boo world, too! I love it when hobbies/interests collide. In our Manga segment 1:14:22, this week's Manga of the Week is My Dress Up Darling by Shinichi Fukuda! I have a deep love of both the manga and anime; this was chosen because volume 7 of the English edition is arriving in stores the day I am posting this episode, and as of me writing this summary, I already finished reading it! Sad face, but also -- it was so goooood! We've officially passed where the anime has run to so far. There is even a little Manga News 01:20:59 at the end of the segment, with one or two updates and a little gushing over Witch Watch, my current ShonenJump app obsession! For the Comic Books segment 01:22:41, I go over what is new and interesting (IMO) this week, as well as what to look forward to in comic releases over the rest of the month! In the previous week's Picks/Reads as well as catch-up reading coverage 01:27:30, I go over a brief explanation of Marvel's Sins of Sinister mini-event, update the latest for Lazarus Planet at DC, and have a few other fun ones to share! Finally, the Shows & Movies segment 01:35:34 kicks off for 2023 with what has been New and Noteworthy since the last 2022 episode, and the list is quite varied! I have limited coverage of Trailers that have premiered since 2022 as well 01:42:25, because frankly it is a LOT, and we can talk more about those projects as they get closer to premiering. My new ANIME section 01:44:53 h as a lot to cover, including what I've been watching in my spare time, what I've currently got on my simulcast (sort of) watch list, even including things I'm still on the fence for. And last, I speak just a minute or two on Teen Titans season 4 01:49:21, and how part 1 ended. And that's the week! Next week will feature a lot of the same, but updated, including our first Tarot Card Lesson proper, covering the first card in the Major Arcana, the Fool. More comics, more sweatiness, and more celebration of life, coming next week! in the meantime, check out my (very much in-progress) reading summary for Big Barda, co-star of the coming Valentine's Day romance podcast special! Why shouldn't we mix genres without constraint? I see no reason. They all are great and also terrible. Combine them, try to keep all the great, and keep less of the terrible, and then you can have stuff like this, where Wonder Woman fights a fully-painted old school pulp fantasy dragon. This week we are discussing JLA: A League of One with Anne of The Comics Collective, the podcaster who started it all by telling me where to start with Wonder Woman! Due to technical difficulties, this episode is a week late but it's still great! This week we discuss Nubia & the Amazons #1-6 with recurring guests and friends of the pod Marci & Ako of the Colored Pages Book Club! Unfortunately we lost a pretty big chunk of the audio for this episode, but our guests were gracious enough to re-record sections of the conversation and you can barely even tell it was Jerry-rigged. In fact if I hadn't told you, you probably wouldn't notice at all. This week we are reading the prematurely cancelled Children of the Atom (2021) #1-6 by Vita Ayala. Despite the early cancellation, this is a arc we would all suggest reading. The time has finally come to discuss the most enjoyable superhero film of the 2000s and possibly the most enjoyable superhero film of all time. It's time for us to talk about Catwoman starring Oscar Award winner Halle Berry opposite Golden Globe winner Sharon Stone. Costarring SAG Award winner Benjamin Bratt. And of course for such a momentous and inevitable occasion we need a momentous and inevitable co-host. So Monte's brother Joshua is here to reminisce about the time when you could just throw together a $100 million film in a couple months with an incredibly talented all-star cast and a spunky can-do attitude. Do we love this movie? Yes! Is it good? Yes! Will we take any notes whatsoever about those opinions? In the grand world of mid-'90s alt-rock, two female-led bands burst through and conquered the world. But of the two, which one's expression of anger debut hit punched hader, No Doubt's "Just a Girl" or Garbage's "Stupid Girl"?

Claribel & Kat discuss what "success" means in publishing (and what it definitely does not mean). Then they interview Vita Ayala about their journey into writing comics, how the Metropolitan Museum of Art is super haunted, being inspired by Octavia Butler as a kid, and the difference between comics and prose writing. ABOUT VITA: Vita Ayala (they/them) is a trans non-binary Afro-Puerto Rican writer born and bred in New York City, where they grew up dreaming dreams of dancing on far away worlds, fighting monsters on the block, and racing fish along the bottom of the ocean. Before Vita began freelancing as a writer, they worked in book retail, event coordination, building management, baking, and museum security (day and graveyard shift). They've broken at least one of every bone in their body, which means they can feel the rain coming. Vita writes both comics and prose fiction, and has written for publishers such as: Black Mask Studios, DC (comics), Dynamite, IDW, Image Comics, Macmillan, Marvel Comics, Realm, Valiant, and Vault Comics. Vita currently resides in New York City with their wife and cat sons. • FOLLOW VITA: Website | Twitter Buy New Mutants Vol. 1 (New Mutants, 1) by Vita Ayala Buy New Mutants Vol. 2 (New Mutants, 2) by Vita Ayala Buy Reclaim the Stars: 17 Tales Across Realms & Space Buy Submerged by Vita Ayala Listen to Marvel's Jessica Jones: Playing with Fire MENTIONS: • DAWN by Octavia Butler • FOLLOW CLARIBEL: Twitter | Instagram | Youtube | TikTok • www.claribelortega.com • Check out all of Claribel's books • Add FRIZZY on Goodreads • FOLLOW KAT: Twitter | Instagram | YouTube | TikTok • www.katchowrites.com • BUY Once Upon a K-Prom • Check out Kat's Books --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/writeordiepodcast/support
