The prosecution is nearing the end of their case, but not before some explosive witness testimony, extensive legal arguments, and dramatic revelations. Eric Richins' business partner and friend, Cody Wright, faced intense cross-examination.Mr. Throckmorton, a handwriting expert, testified about a life insurance document from February 2022. He concluded that there was no evidence Eric authored the signature and that it was a simulated forgery. A detective was forced to reveal an initially withheld statement from Eric's sister, Amy Richins, who allegedly told him that Eric thought Kouri was going to kill him. The defense aggressively questioned a detective about hundreds of thousands of Eric's text messages, specifically about sex acts, which the detective interpreted as joking between friends. The trial continues to slow down with legal arguments, but the prosecution is close to resting its case, which will feature Kouri's statements, calls, and the infamous "Walk The Dog” letter. Joe Glascock manages the historic Winecup Gamble Ranch, a 1.2-million-acre buckaroo outfit in northeast Nevada. Established in the Thousand Springs Valley shortly after the Central Pacific Railroad arrived in the area, the ranch features a combination of deeded land and government allotments that includes meadow pastures at 5,000 feet elevation, mountain ranges that climb to 8,700 feet and plenty of expansive, high desert ranges. Remote verification via video has been allowed since 2023, but errors—missing fields, wrong dates, or accepting invalid docs—can trigger fines from $281 to $2,789 per form, with knowingly hiring unauthorized workers costing up to $27,894 per violation. The real alarm bell? A $170 billion ICE budget boost, including $30 million to hire 10,000 new agents focused on workplace audits and raids. Desiree notes 15,000 targeted I-9 inspections planned for 2026—more than double pre-COVID levels—shifting from Trump's first-term focus on arrests to systematic compliance checks. Recent raids (e.g., Hyundai's Georgia plant detaining ~500 South Korean contractors on wrong visas) highlight risks, while a Colorado case saw $8 million in fines for systemic errors and unauthorized hires. She warns employers to organize I-9s, centralize processes, and audit internally—many don't even know where forms are stored. The H-1B “genius visa” program takes a hit too: fees jumping from $2,000–$5,000 to $100,000 per sponsorship, pricing out mid-sized firms and favoring tech giants. Desiree and the hosts lament lost innovation, economic contributions ($100 billion in taxes from immigrants last year), and community diversity, especially in industries like healthcare (40%+ immigrant home health aides) and agriculture. With OFCCP effectively defanged, C-suites must redirect compliance resources to ICE readiness. Desiree's advice: map vulnerabilities, understand your workforce footprint, and treat I-9s like payroll—accurate, auditable, and non-negotiable. “ICE ICE baby could be coming for you" ... Episode 56 - Texas Votes and it's War Remember from the last episode that those who wanted to leave the union forced the state to call a special convention. In that election the separatists pushed through their agenda and quite frankly ignored any semblance of legitimacy. The procedures they followed were not even remotely close to having any type of standards.  Many delegates were elected by a simple voice vote at a public meeting, and since there was so much fervor for secession, those who supported the union often didn't even attend. The delegates they selected were much like the folks around them. They averaged 40 years old, and virtually every one  of them had originated from one of the states in the south where slavery was accepted. Some of them had more money than most Texans, but you can't say the extremely wealthy dominated things. However, about 40 percent of them were lawyers and about 70 percent of them were slaveholders. The convention opened on Monday afternoon, January 28, and the presiding officer offered these words, "All political power is inherent in the people. That power, I assert, you now represent." The next day, January 29 John A. Wharton made a motion "that without determining now the manner in which this result should be effected, it is the deliberate sense of this Convention that the State of Texas should separately secede." His motion was seconded by George M. Flournoy, and needless to say it passed 152 to 6. Over the next 2 days, the delegates wrote out the formal ordinance of secession, which called for a popular vote. This was different from the lower southern  states, who simply passed a resolution and declared they had seceded. Of course, there was opposition to having a popular vote, but that motion was easily defeated, 145 to 29. Since Texans had held a referendum before they joined the union, most of the delegates insisted that the same procedure should be followed if they were to leave the union. Because he knew the significance of what was taking place Governor Houston and other members of the legislature asked for a referendum. They believed that a popular vote would end all doubt and questions over the legality of secession. The final vote was taken in the morning of February 1st. It was a roll-call vote taken in alphabetical order. The final vote was 166 for secession and 8 against. One of the first steps the convention took after the vote was to form the Civil War Committees of Public Safety. They also sent delegates to Montgomery, Alabama, who took part in officially establishing the Confederate States of America. On February 4th, they adjourned. Before the popular vote took place, the Committee on Public Safety, using power it had been given by the convention authorized the seizure of all federal property in Texas. This included the arsenal at San Antonio, which would later become the headquarters for the H.E.B. grocery chain and that sits on the bank of the San Antonio River. This order resulted in the evacuation of almost 3,000 federal troops from Texas. These actions essentially made the secession referendum itself an afterthought. However, there were some people and counties in the state that did not consider the referendum to be insignificant. Those opposed to secession were primarily situated along the northern border of the state and in the counties that surrounded Austin. Some leaders such as Throckmorton and Benjamin H. Epperson in North Texas and Elisha M. Pease, Svante Palm, and George Paschal of Austin led the local fights against secession. Sam Houston continued to question whether it was necessity or wise to leave the Union. Federal United States representative Andrew J. Hamilton, who was also a resident of Austin, campaigned against secession. What were some of the common features of those opposed to secession? The areas it was most prominent in were culturally, geographically, and economically unlike the lower South.

She has taken the stage all across the US, Canada, Europe, and Oceania at top-tier venues (like the Meltdown in Los Angeles, Union Hall in Brooklyn, and the Bill Murray in London), comedy clubs (like Comedy on State in Madison, the Comedy MIX in Vancouver, and Dead Crow Comedy in Wilmington), festivals (like the New York Comedy Festival, Skankfest, and High Mud), theatres (like Theatre 99 in Charleston, the Bug Theatre in Denver, and the Throckmorton in Mill Valley), dimly lit bar basements, strangers' living rooms, and even a houseboat once.  She has two other successful musical comedy albums: Zinger-Songwriter, which she recorded at 12 different venues while on tour across the US and UK, and Betty Pitch, which she recorded after writing 250 songs a day during the pandemic. A fierce champion of mixed media and genre-bending works of art, Caitlin has carved out a space for herself smack-dab in the centre of the Venn diagram between comedy, music, and theatre.
