Hello once again everyone I'm your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends. The Dollyrots are Kelly Ogden on vocals and bass and Luis Cabezas (head) on guitar, with Justin McGrath on live drums. Their most recent release is Down The Rabbit Hole, a 24-track collection of B-sides, rarities, and cover songs with a Dollyrots twist. The diverse collection features songs from throughout the band's 20-year history, remastered and including previously unheard tracks and alternate takes. The band recently released a new 7” limited edition pink vinyl release in partnership with indie label juggernaut Cleopatra Records. The Dollyrots transform a soft rock classic, “Alone Again (Naturally)” originally recorded in 1972 by Gilbert O'Sullivan, into a fun, fist-pumping punk rock anthem! That track is backed with an original song entitled “That's Not Even All,” which highlights the band's double threat as both arrangers and writers! The trio has hit the Billboard Heatseekers chart multiple times, been featured in movies and television, and have shared stages with some of punk's biggest names. And they are currently working on new music to be released in 2023. Today's special guest is Kelly Ogden!Kelly, together with her husband Luis, started The Dollyrots for a bit of fun whilst college students in Florida. They then decided to take the leap of faith and make the band a full time gig, moved to LA and have been on an epic journey playing their brand of music that is chockablock full of melodies, riffs and pure joy that Ramones, The Muffs and Joan Jett would be proud of.I'm so grateful to Kelly for being so open in sharing her formative influences, the way she has adapted as her life has changed, how her identity has evolved, dealt with the ups and downs of her career, managed the roles of rock n roller, wife and mum and how her risk taking has changed over the years. We crammed a lot of stuff in here that's kinda relevant for all of us in dealing with our complex world. Kelly is such a natural conversationalist and this was a lot of fun.I Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is a music podcast that does music interviews differently. On this show, I spoke with the ‘Awesome' Kelly Ogden of The Dollyrots. Her bandmate Luis Cabeza was with us in spirit. Their infectious brand of indie pop/punk rock has covered the gamut from fun, in your face, rock n' roll jams like “Everything”, “Because I'm Awesome” and “Brand New Key” to touching and unexpected covers like “Earth Angel” by The Penguins and Little Eva's “Turkey Trot”. Just yesterday they embarked on their 'Down the Rabbit Hole' US tour which kicks off on July 14th in New Jersey at The Saint and wraps on October 9th in San Diego at the Kensington Club. I'm super stoked to have ‘em on the show. Join me in welcoming the hare-raising Dollyrots to The MOG, ‘Because, well, they really are awesome!' On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Kelly Ogden from The Dollyrots. The Dollyrots are known for delivering high-energy punk rock filled with the bubblegum hooks of pop. Since their debut release in 2004, the group has been refining their sound, musical chops, and fun-filled stage show, mixing hook-laden pop-rock gems with a vicious guitar assault and plenty of attitude to spare. Following in the footsteps of Weezer‘s cover of Toto‘s Africa and The Ataris cover of Don Henley‘s Boys Of Summer, The Dollyrots transform the soft rock classic, Alone Again (Naturally), that was originally recorded in 1972 by Gilbert O'Sullivan, into a fun, fist-pumping punk rock anthem! That track is backed with an original song entitled That's Not Even All, which highlights the band's double threat as both arrangers and writers. Sherry and Kelly chat about the new single, hosting at Sirius XM's Little Steven's Underground Garage, future plans, and much more! Check out thedollyrots.com for more details.
Several Pop-Punk & Pizza listeners have requested The Dollyrots to be guests on the show over the years. It's about time we made it happen for you! Kelly Ogden and Luis Cabezas were able to get their favorite pizza place in Tampa, FL, Lee's Grocery, to open up early just for this episode recording. I chose to have one of my local favorites as well, Chicago Dough Company, in Bourbonnais, IL. It was so much fun chowing down on delicious pizza while talking about their latest release, "Down The Rabbit Hole", which is out now through Wicked Cool Records. The Dollyrots are also currently on tour in the United Kingdom with good friends Bowling For Soup and LIT through April 23rd. Click here for dates! Much Love, Jacques LaMore
During the band's 20-year run, The Dollyrots have released more than a dozen albums and EPs, played all over the world, performed with countless punk and rock and roll mainstays, and had their music featured on television shows and in films. Though the band itself has quite a long and interesting history, its founding members go back even further. Now back on the road in support of a new release — a 24-track collection of B-sides, rarities and covers called Down the Rabbit Hole — on Wicked Cool Records, the story continues for Kelly Ogden and Luis Cabezas. Prior to a recent show at X-Ray Arcade, The Dollyrots welcomed My First Band host Tyler Maas into the band's RV to talk about Down the Rabbit Hole, the ongoing tour, upcoming European shows with Bowling For Soup and Lit, and the possibility their biggest hit is still to come. Over the course of the conversation, Ogden and Cabezas spoke about meeting in middle school, dating in high school, going to college together and starting a band, and moving to Los Angeles with no money and a bunch of exotic pets. Along the way, they talked about being featured in a commercial, their appreciation for people like Joan Jett and Steven Van Zandt, and how much they appreciate their drummer Justin, who also makes a cameo in the episode. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Jim and Mike Interview KELLY OGDEN from the Punk Band THE DOLLYROTS! Jim has been a fan of the band since 2007 when they released their cover of "brand new key". We had a lot of fun talking to Kelly about the new album (Down the Rabbit Hole), her acting debut on CSI, playing with Bowling for Soup, being signed to blackheart records, traveling with kids, Rabbits, Todd Rundgren on a train ... and more! *********** ABOUT THE DOLLYROTS: The Dollyrots are a Los Angeles, California based pop punk band made up of Kelly Ogden (vocals/bass) and Luis Cabezas (guitar/vocals). Since their formation 18 years ago the husband and wife duo has played over a thousand shows in the US and Europe, shared the stage with many of their idols, and released six studio albums along with several EPs, singles, splits, and a live concert film. Their last 3 albums have peaked in the Top 20 of the Billboard Heatseeker's chart, earning heavy rotation on Sirius/XM radio and followed releases on Lookout Records & Joan Jett's Blackheart Records. What started as a hobby for New College of Florida students (and childhood friends) Kelly Ogden (bass/vocals) and Luis Cabezas (guitar) became a career when Ogden and Cabezas decided to make their band, The Dollyrots, a full-time gig in 2001. The duo set off on a road trip to find a new home for the group and settled in Los Angeles in 2002; once there, the pair set about honing a pop-punk sound inspired by the Ramones, the Pixies, the Sex Pistols, Nirvana, and Green Day. Two years later, the band signed with Lookout!/Panic Button Records and released Eat My Heart Out. Following release of their debut the band appeared onscreen on CSI:NY performing two songs off the album. While playing the Vans Warped Tour in 2006 the band members met Joan Jett, who was so taken by the Dollyrots that she offered them a spot on her Blackheart Records label roster after hearing demos of their upcoming LP. The Dollyrots' second album Because I'm Awesome debuted on Blackheart in 2007. The album spawned several singles that made an impact on radio and appeared on film/TV (Easy A, Brave, The Vampire Diaries, Greek, Reaper.) A year later they recorded a version of Jett's song “Bad Reputation” for the soundtrack to the film Endless Bummer, followed up three years later with the slickly produced A Little Messed Up. The first single off this effort, “California Beach Boy”, was featured with a live performance by the band on The Price Is Right. The Dollyrots left Blackheart after that, releasing an EP on their own Arrested Youth label. For their next project, the group turned to crowd-funding site Kickstarter, launching a wildly successful campaign that yielded 2012's The Dollyrots. Working again with co-producer John Fields, the independently released set featured Ogden and Cabezas firmly in charge for the first time in their career as they played all the instruments (save for a few parts done by producer Fields) and had final say over all facets of the process. By this point the Dollyrots had gone through a number of different drummers and generally operated as duo with guest musicians in the studio and on their various tours. Their 2014 release, Barefoot and Pregnant, was recorded during Ogden's pregnancy and was subsequently followed by the birth of the couple's first child. The album fared well critically and reached number seven on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. The all-acoustic Love Songs, Werewolves, and Zombies was released digitally in 2013 to the band's PledgeMusic supporters, and received a public release the following year. The Dollyrots continued to successfully fund their projects via crowd-funding and in 2016, they released their first concert album, the ambitious, double-disc/DVD set Family Vacation: Live in Los Angeles. That same year also saw the release of the three-song EP Mama's Gonna Knock You Out. The end of the year saw them working on two new projects, another kid and their next album. The couple's baby girl was born in November and the John Fields-produced Whiplash Splash was released in early 2017. This was followed by a 7-inch single Get Radical, released on Little Steven Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records. The band most recently released their album of B-Sides, Rarities and Covers entitled "DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE" Be sure to visit their website at : www.thedollyrots.com for a ton of cool, unique items (we mention some in the interview) Jim and Mike Talk Music can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. Today, Matt welcomes the lead singer and bassist for The Dollyrots, Kelly Ogden. The Dollyrots' newest album is a live album called Family Vacation: Live From Los Angeles, released alongside a DVD of the same name! The album is essentially a live greatest hits of the band's 16-year long career. Hear Kelly and Matt chat about how the band has evolved over the years and where it's headed in the future. She chats about her life as a rock n' roll mom, and how that's affected her writing, touring, and especially scheduling. She also chats about why the band decided to release a live album instead of a new LP, why they included the cover of "Brand New Key", and what that song meant to Kelly specifically. Continue reading
Over the last year the Dollyrots managed to get pregnant, have a child and record an album. If you buy into the old adage my songs are like my children then Kelly Ogden from the Dollyrots had 13 kids, one human and 12 songs. The album is great and Kelly was great on the podcast. […]
The Dollyrots, comprised of Kelly Ogden (bass/vocals), Luis Cabezas (guitar) and Alicia Warrington (drums), was originally founded by childhood friends Ogden and Cabezas in their native Florida. The pair decided to move to Los Angeles in 2002 and have recently seen the addition of drummer Warrington. The band has released three full length albums (Eat My Heart Out, Because I’m Awesome, and A Little Messed Up) and several singles and EPs through the Lookout, Blackheart, and Brando record labels. In addition, The Dollyrots’ music has earned them song placements, commercials, and acting stints in television shows including Hewlett-Packard, Kohls, CSI:NY, ABC Family’s Greek, Ugly Betty, Vampire Diaries, The Price is Right, Easy A, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, Reaper, and Bring It On: Fight to the Finish, among others. The trio has logged hundreds of thousands of miles in the U.S. touring consistently since 2003 while cultivating a rabidly loyal fan base. Over the past 10 years, The Dollyrots have worked with a number of well-known producers including John Fields (Andrew WK, Pink), Chris Testa (Jimmy Eat World, Dixie Chicks), Matt Wallace (Maroon 5, Faith No More), Sylvia Massy (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tool), and Neal H. Pogue (Outkast, Travis Barker.) The past year has seen the three-piece touring across the North America both headlining and alongside bands such as Bowling For Soup, Buzzcocks, and The Go-Gos. In 2010 The Dollyrots toured the UK & Ireland with Bowling For Soup and Forever the Sickest Kids, playing to sold out crowds and expanding their fan base overseas. For The Dollyrots, 2012 is gearing up to be their best year yet as they are currently putting the finishing touches on their fourth full length album independently and with John Fields, producer of “Eat My Heart Out” and “Because I’m Awesome.” The album is in large part being funded by fans through a Kickstarter crowdsourcing project that has thus far doubled initial fundraising expectations.
