On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Michael Ferentino from Love In Reverse, Bedtime For Robots, and many other projects. In the mid 90s, Michael Ferentino and Andres Karu, the New York/New Jersey based dark electronic art rock duo known as DOG, performed and gained an impressive following in some of the most iconic NY and NJ clubs including CBGB, the Bitter End, the Stone Pony and the Limelight. DOG quickly evolved into the 3-piece indie/art rock/space rock band Love in Reverse and signed with Jon and Marsha Zazula's Crazed Management (former owners of Megaforce Records). That led the band to a lucrative deal with Warner/Reprise Records. Love in Reverse recorded three critically acclaimed albums with Warner/Reprise (two with legendary producer Russ Titelman and one mixed by Grammy Award Winner, Jason Corsaro and co produced by NIN producer, John Fryer). In 1996 and 1997, they toured with the likes of Gravity Kills, Stabbing Westward, Republica, and the Cult's Ian Astbury. They also played several radio festivals performing with artists ranging from the Spin Doctors and Tonic to The Deftones and Joan Jett. The band's video for “I'm a Contradiction” was featured on MTV's 120 minutes and the video for “Blueprint for a Possible Song” was included on the sampler DVD for Sony's first commercially available DVD player. Love in Reverse was featured with Peter Frampton on ABC. After three albums with Warner/Reprise, Love in Reverse disbanded and evolved once more into the Amazing Meet Project, a band which has been described by Matt Pinfield of MTVs 120 Minutes as “putting the alternative in alternative rock!” During this period, Ferentino and Karu scored the Kevin Smith produced thriller “A Better Place,” a realistically violent film that has become an underground cult classic. Their music was also featured in “Time of Your Life,” the “Party of Five” television spin-off starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and multiple MTV specials. Among a number of positive media articles featuring the band, Rolling Stone named Love in Reverse as one of 6 new promising bands of 1996. Over the next few years, Ferentino and Karu experimented with a myriad of projects, including the noisy lo-fi electronic garage band, Corduroy Poo-Poo, the spoken word experiment, Speak the Worms, the Diablo Project with Jai Diablo from Interscope Records sludge rock/stoner metal band, Dragpipe, and the electronic ambient/experimental outfit, Bedtime for Robots. In 2002, they teamed up with The Wonder Stuff front-man Miles Hunt for a collaboration dubbed the Miles Hunt Club. Karu also went on to become drummer and producer for the Wonder Stuff in the mid ‘00s while Dave Halpern played drums for multiple artists including the Bee Gees. Ferentino continued with Bedtime for Robots, releasing several acclaimed albums and tracks throughout the 2010s and into the 2020s. Bedtime for Robots were featured in Fangoria Magazine and their music has been consistently featured on DOOMED Radio, Soma FM and multiple worldwide underground Internet radio shows. In 2020, during the initial lockdown of the Coronavirus pandemic, Ferentino, Karu and Halpern put finishing touches on an album they had been secretly working on for the past couple of years and self-released the reformed Love in Reverse album, I'm an Illusion, which brought them to the attention of Ferentino's childhood friend and owner of Dada Drumming Records, an independent label from Texas which specialized in noise, sludge rock and stoner metal. Looking to expand the horizons of the label, Dada Drumming signed the band, now focusing on a return to their guitar-driven indie art rock sound. In 2021, the band put the finishing touches on their newly recorded and strongest album to date, Fake It. Sherry and Michael chat about Love In Reverse, Bedtime For Robots, the art of making music videos on a budget, and much more! Check out Love In Reverse on Facebook for more information.

On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with David Poe. His highly-anticipated new album Everyone's Got A Camera arrives September 23rd, 2022 on ECR Music Group. Its powerful third single, “Analog” is out now. More sonically adventurous than his previous album, Poe's latest begins and ends with straightforward songs for a world in reckoning. This third single follows on a wave of critical and commercial success for the artist. Rolling Stone writes, “David Poe gives the singer-songwriter genre a much-needed jolt.” Poe has toured the world with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Tori Amos, The Jayhawks, and Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze. A composer fellow of the Sundance Institute, his work features in numerous film, TV, dance and theater projects, official selections of the Sundance Film Festival, and commercials for humanitarian projects like the Malala Fund and the You Mean The World Foundation. His songs have been performed by a wide array of artists, including Curtis Stigers, Oh Land, Ana Moura, C.C. White, Thomas Dybdahl and the cast of ABC's Nashville, and recorded by producers including T-Bone Burnett, Larry Klein, Buddy Miller, and Dave Sitek. He has also produced recordings for other artists, including Regina Spektor and Kraig Jarret Johnson. Shadowland, a collaboration with contemporary dance company Pilobolus, toured for a decade and was performed on five continents, for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and was released as a feature film. In an era of pop music that tends to either turn away from big concerns or focus on small ones, David Poe's Everyone's Got A Camera feels both new and old, as surprising as it is inevitable: a musical treatise for an age in flux that is as daring as it is profound. From 1960s-tinged rock & roll to quasi-trap, with nods to the jazz-inflected folk and acoustic music for which he is best known, Poe's new songs take on the handoff between this century and the last, surveillance culture and the ongoing battle between fact and opinion with a plain-spoken philosopher's wit. Transplanted from the American Midwest to New York City, David Poe served as the sound engineer at CBGB's 313 Gallery before signing with Sony/Epic. He currently lives in Los Angeles. Sherry and David chat about his new single “Analog”, his forthcoming album ‘Everyone's Got A Camera', and much more! Check out davidpoe.com for more information.

It exists unseen in the ether, yet certainly leaves a physical, emotional, and spiritual imprint. Jeremy & The Harlequins deal in this sort of magic. Finding the crossroads between sun-soaked sixties California harmonies and New York garage rock gutter fuzz, the quintet kickstart a new phase of American rock ‘n' roll. Following 2013's American Dreamer, they quietly emerged as a critical and fan favorite with Into The Night [2016] and Remember This [2018]. Along the way, they earned the endorsement of USA Today, Paste, Interview, Wall Street Journal, Nylon, Consequence of Sound, Atwood Magazine, Relix, and Huffington Post who christened them “true originals.” Meanwhile, they can be heard loud and clear throughout popular culture with syncs in Edge of Tomorrow: Live. Die. Repeat., Seal Team, Shameless, Vampire Diaries, Royal Pain, Heavy, Life Partners, and a Miller High Life national campaign. On SiriusXM, Little Steven's Underground Garage selected “Starlight” as its “Coolest Song In The World” and “Trip Into The Light” as the “Coolest Song of the Year.” Everything just set the stage for their fourth full-length and 2022 Pasadena Records debut, ABRA CaDaBRA. To conjure up this magic, they tracked the music at Van Zandt's Renegade Studios with producer Geoff Sanoff [Bruce Springsteen, Little Steven, Jesse Malin]. For vocals, they reteamed with Rick Parker [Lord Huron, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Scott Weiland] in Hollywood's Sandbox Studios. They also welcomed an all-star cast of supporting players such as Hamilton lead violinist Jonny Dinklage, Ben Jaffe [tenor sax], and Steve Garcia [trumpet]. On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Cody Brooks. Cody Brooks plays it all, whipping up a raw, rootsy racket with help from a 1929 B&J Victoria parlor guitar and a voice that's as wild and rough-hewn as the Tennessee backwoods. The music all started 20 minutes outside of Nashville, where Brooks' childhood home was filled with the sounds of the nearby Marrowbone Creek and his parents' 78 rpm record collection. He listened to it all: Tommy Dorsey, Robert Johnson, Hank Snow, Son House, Jimi Hendrix. Brooks picked up the guitar as a teenager and began traveling, too, spending time in Oregon and the southwest before Nashville's music scene lured him back home. There, before he could legally drink, he started playing gigs at the blues bars downtown, tossing in his own songs between covers by R&B singers and Delta legends. Brooks' songs spin stories of revenge, anger, dirty love, clean breaks and the infamous time that a baby copperhead snake bit him on the arm, resulting in a three-day fever dream (and inspired songwriting session) while he lay in bed and sweated out the poison. Although in the 2020's, Brooks has lived the sort of life that's more typical of someone from the previous centuries — a life of restlessness, of travel, of baths in creek water and makeshift beds in barns — embracing that old-world vibe and constantly updating his sound with the sneer of punk rock and the swagger of hip-hop. It's music for Saturday night sinners, delivered with the sort of fire-and-brimstone fury that'll attract a few Sunday morning holy rollers, too. Sherry and Cody chat about his new album ‘First World Problems', rebellion, and much more! Check out codybrooks.rocks for more information.

    Analog Smile - Beautiful Machines

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 8, 2022 39:25

On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Stefanie Ku and Conrad Schuman of Beautiful Machines. The genesis of electronic duo Beautiful Machines' new single "Baum Baum,” began in Berlin one winter on a three-month writing hiatus, during which time, Stefanie Ku and Conrad Schuman of the duo visited the famed Hansa Studios (Bowie, U2, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Depeche Mode). The idea for the song came about when Conrad learned of the heart-wrenching, ever present news that there were thousands of unexploded “bombs” still posing a potentially catastrophic tragedy in the city, left over from World War II. As time continued on with an inevitable return to nature and peace, however, the city has been transformed; for instance imagine a “tree” breaking through the ground of a concrete jungle from a bombed-out city, life is starting anew. As ‘Baum' translates to “tree” in German, the song title itself serves as a play on words, while at the same time the pounding boom boom techno bass resonating through club walls served as a sonic onomatopoeia to this track and in a sense offering a kind of code to decipher. Baum Baum" follows their previous album singles “Control” and “Survive”. An act of synthesis that blends technology with art, the digital with the humane, Singularity is not only an album, but it's also an experience - a continually updating project that spans music, visuals, and performance. On one level, it's sparkling synth pop in line with everyone from Giorgio Moroder to The Human League, Nine Inch Nails to Robyn. On another, it's a total art experience, inspired by interstellar wanderings through the cosmic realms of Kraftwerk and Isaac Asimov. "Baum Baum'' is out now via Republic of Music. Singularity will be released Summer 2022. Sherry, Conrad, and Stefanie chat about their music, upcoming projects, technology, and much more! Check out beautifulmachines.space for details.

The Heroic Enthusiasts' Fits and Fashions—the first of their two EPs to be released this year on Meridian/ECR Music Group—arrived June 24th on the heels of multiple successes for the celebrated duo. “The Fits and Fashions EP is tantamount to ‘Side 1' of our new album,” says guitarist and songwriter Thomas Ferarra. “And ‘Side 2' will be coming later this year. The five songs on Fits and Fashions provide an opportunity to glimpse who we are as a band: one that pulls from 80's-based nostalgia and turns it into something modern, new, and refreshing.” The two singles already released from this new EP have quickly become the most successful singles of The Heroic Enthusiasts' career. “Fits and Fashions is primarily about the personal and social dichotomies of the world we're living in,” singer and songwriter James Tabbi explains. “We all want to try to fix what we're witnessing and experiencing, to fit it all together better, to fashion a better world regardless of the inherent challenges.” Co-produced and mixed by Post-Punk and New Wave studio legend Stephen Hague (New Order, Peter Gabriel, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys), Fits and Fashions harks back to the synth-and-guitar driven hits of the 1980's which helped shape the duo's own musical landscape. The Heroic Enthusiasts' now well-established musical partnership with Hague began with an auspicious introduction. “So much of what I'm sent these days is basically beats with hooks, but the Heroic's stuff was a breath of fresh air,” says Hague. “When I first heard their demos, I was taken by their song-craft and musicality. After a couple of introductory phone conversations with Thomas and James, I knew and said, ‘Buckle up boys, I'm joining the team.'” Hague, who has produced and recorded some of the most iconic pop music of the past half-century with Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Peter Gabriel, and Erasure, did, in fact, join the team—comprised of James Tabbi and Thomas Ferrara—to forge the collection of tracks on Fits and Fashions. Tabbi and Ferrara's shared influences of Brit-pop, New Wave, and Post-Punk brought the duo together following celebrated solo efforts as recording artists, producers, composers, and multi-instrumentalists. Educated in computational mathematics and mathematical statistics, respectively, Tabbi and Ferrara's creative collaborations deftly combine the intellectual and emotional, a dichotomy that has now caught the attention of listeners around the globe. Analog Smile - The Handcuffs

On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Brad Elvis and Chloe F. Orwell from The Handcuffs. Led by drummer Brad Elvis (Screams, The Elvis Brothers, Big Hello, The Romantics) and vocalist/guitarist/saxophonist Chloe F. Orwell (Big Hello), Chicago's The Handcuffs, released their fourth studio album Burn The Rails. The 13-song album was tracked at Kingsize Sound Labs, Chicago with producer/engineer Mike Hagler (Wilco, Neko Case, Billy Bragg, Mavis Staples, My Morning Jacket, The Mekons). Burn The Rails was released by Pravda Records in June on CD, download and via streaming platforms and later on 12″ vinyl. For the new album, they found inspiration from the heady, analog days of early 1970s rock & roll, weaving together elements of glam, indie, garage, art and blues rock. Inhabiting some of the same musical turf as T-Rex, Mott The Hoople, Roxy Music, The Raconteurs, P.J. Harvey, Led Zeppelin, and Patti Smith – all filtered through a modern lens – they deliver bold, sexy songs with memorable melodies and unexpected twists. Guest keyboardist Morgan Fisher (Mott The Hoople) demonstrates his synthesizer and piano prowess on a couple of tracks on the new LP. The relationship with Fisher, a musical hero of the band, began after singer Orwell's rave review of Mott The Hoople's 2018 reunion tour went viral on social media, attracting the attention of Fisher, who got in contact. From there a creative collaboration was sparked, in-spite of an ocean separating the now real-life friends. Finishing the record during the peak of the pandemic and lockdown gave several of the songs an inadvertent anthem-for-the-times feel – with themes of love and loss, heartache and hope, and even the great ideological divide that was as omnipresent as the virus. Elvis and Orwell formed The Handcuffs from the ashes of Big Hello, their first band together, which released three indie label records and toured from coast to coast. Elvis' career also includes a few major label go-arounds, arena tours, and a backstory that will be documented in a new autobiography in the near future. The duo's eagerness to explore new sonic territory and evolve into an entity that aligned more with their ever-expanding influences and broad range of musical tastes prompted a change. The Handcuffs began as primarily a studio project, in which Elvis and Orwell wrote and recorded an abundance of material. During the process, they realized that they missed the live band experience, and so The Handcuffs as recording artists and a dynamic live band was born. Completing the line-up are bassist Emily Togni, lead guitarist Jeffrey Kmieciak, and keyboardist Alison Hinderliter, all of whom originate from different parts of the country, but have made Chicago their home. Sherry, Brad, and Chloe chat about ‘Burn The Rails' and much more! Visit thehandcuffs.com for more information.

He has a poignant new book titled “She Walks In Beauty: My Quest For The Bigger Picture”. She Walks In Beauty is the tale of Yardbirds drummer Jim McCarty's lifelong quest to unravel the mysteries of the world that exist beyond the world in which we live. Beginning with a childhood fascination with the paranormal that only gathered strength as he grew older, this book explores the world hidden just out of reach, the shadows that are just out of sight and the certainty that there is an enduring connection between the living and the dead. Woven in and around his career as a musician, McCarty reflects upon the books and films that signposted his course, and the myriad places to which his curiosity led him, from war-time bomb-sites to public seances, from suburban English healing centers to pilgrimages to India, China and the Himalayas. He looks back at the songs he has written that chart that journey, beginning with the Yardbirds' “Happenings Ten Years Time Ago,” through to his recent solo work. He recalls the friends and musicians who have joined him on his quest, including Yardbirds vocalist Keith Relf, and Renaissance/Stairway bassist Louis Cennamo. He tells stories… so many stories… of his years in and out of music, forever searching for answers to the questions he had - and, ultimately, finding them. On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Michael Millard, the director of 35000 Watts: The Story of College Radio. 35000 Watts is the untold story of college radio brought to life by the students behind the mic and the bands they made famous. It's the story of the youth and music culture that originated, and later flourished, on the airwaves of American colleges and universities, establishing a new generational voice and a new path to success for many alumni and artists. Highlighting an era where college radio's influence was at its peak, 35000 Watts: The Story of College Radio also examines its humble beginnings and how it evolved to create hugely impactful experiences for local and regional communities, students finding their voice, and the musicians seeking their shot at hitting it big. The film dives deep into the music that was the heart of college radio programming, exploring the symbiotic relationship between artists creating music that did not fit into commercial radio formats and the student-run radio stations that were more than happy to play it. The film features interviews with iconic big-name acts and smaller regional bands who lived their rock-and-roll dream for a short while, as well as discussions with former college radio alumni who spin on about their role in college radio and why college radio is still relevant in today's media-saturated landscape. Despite this positive impact, college radio stations seem to be forever locked in a battle to justify their existence and stay on the air in an increasingly crowded landscape. Threats can come from any direction and every station has a handful of heroes who have fought to keep their stations from shutting down. The stories they can tell about their efforts are sometimes worthy of entire films on their own. Without the efforts of those who started college radio stations and kept them alive, we might never have seen the talents of David Letterman, Billy Crystal, Howard Stern or Bob Odenkirk. We might never have heard the music of R.E.M., The B-52s, U2, Pixies or The Cure. These artists and entertainers, plus many more, all found their audience first on college radio. This film is a celebration of the independent spirit that created so many culture-defining stations and kept them on the air for generations. 35000 Watts: The Story of College Radio delves into the ongoing impact and legacy of those who were at the epicenter of this radio revolution. Cutting his teeth in the Philly rock scene, he moved to NYC and joined the band Dope who released two albums on Sony records. Acey co-wrote the song ‘Now or Never' and the song ‘Die MF Die' (which is currently at over 100 million spins on Spotify alone). From there he joined Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison in the Murderdolls. After several world tours with everyone from Papa Roach to Iron Maiden, the band gained a large international following. The Murderdolls were constantly cleaning up every poll in every music magazine in the UK and performing on Top of the Pops and BBC1 radio shows. After this whirlwind of touring, Acey took time to work on his own band Trashlight Vision, and then another project called the Dark Party. In the winter of 2010 Acey joined rock and roll royalty by playing bass for Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. They recorded the ‘Unvarnished' album which saw them appear on all of the major late night and daytime TV talk shows. Worldwide touring ensued, supporting the Foo Fighters and by 2015 Joan Jett and the Blackhearts were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of fame. By 2016, a few other legendary punk rockers had their eye on Acey as he joined the reunited Misfits as 2nd guitarist for their prodigious return. This coincided with a reunion tour for his alma mater Dope and he's split his time between the two bands ever since. In the midst of all the craziness that was 2020, Acey and his wife seized their opportunity and started Catfight Coffee. Ex-Jellyfish members Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Beck, Air, Cheap Trick, Imperial Drag), Tim Smith (Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, The Finn Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Umajets) and Eric Dover (Imperial Drag, Slash's Snakepit, Alice Cooper, Sextus)—released their third and final child, Threesome Volume 3, May 20, 2022 on Stranger Danger Records and Tapes, distributed by Burnside and the Orchard in the U.S. and by Lojinx in the U.K. and Europe. It's available now on digital outlets and on the band's official website. Threesome Volume 3 makes its way into the world via remote writing, recording, and mixing. The challenges we've all faced these last years forced Roger, Eric and Tim to finalize this EP through a series of emails, and phone calls. Home recording studios were redesigned and outfitted to complete the final four songs that were originally written together in 2017. Threesome Volume 3 completes the trilogy started with the release of Threesome Volume 1 in 2020, which was called a “masterpiece” by many critics and fans alike. Threesome Volume 2 was released in early 2021, and its first single, “Snollygoster Goon,” showed another side of the band and its versatility as writers, singers and musicians. “Fortunately,” the EP's first single and video, is a bouncy tune sung by Tim Smith that drips with the signature harmonies and melodic structures The Lickerish Quartet have been known for, alongside a deeper, darker lyric that speaks to the universal ideas of heaven, hell, dogma and belief. As a co-write with their executive producer, Adam W. James, Eric's slide guitar soloing, Roger's keyboards and string arrangement, and Tim's melodic bass lines combine for the listener to perhaps harken back to early FM radio hits of the ‘70s. “New Days” was released as the second single and video on April 22. As sung by Roger, it's a tale of remembering the past with the longing psychedelic hope of the future. Eric's lyric touches pastoral images of optimistic youth and shaping moments with the desire to keep moving forward, onward, and probably westward. Lush reverb guitars, grooving bass and drums with evolving vocal harmonies celebrate the hope we all share for new beginnings. “You All Alone” starts with a jarring string ensemble as Eric's lead vocal then weaves a story of obsession and pursuit. Jagged drums and bass, razor wire guitars and another excellent string arrangement by Roger leads our hero towards satisfaction, but at what cost? Who is the hunter, and who is the hunted? “In The Meantime” rounds out the EP. Sung by Tim, the song ponders where do YOU go when you are feeling the crush of a world you no longer recognize? Topical, but also timeless, “In The Meantime” proffers to float rather than sink or swim. The theme of burying down deep is married to a pulsing, shouting wall of guitar sound and fury, but with a non-violent narrative. Those most precious things that bring us happiness--to love someone, do something, or have something to hope for--are sung about with fearlessness. They continue to engage with their fans via their website and “Experiences”--a series of collaborative connections of writing together with folks, performing on songs submitted to the band, personalized songs and messages, lessons in songwriting and production, as well as numerous Zoom-hosted breakdowns of their songs in-studio followed by a Q&A with the fans about the process, choices made, and equipment used to create their music. Meanwhile, Sony Japan recently partnered with them to release all three EPs on June 29, as a collection entitled Fables From Fearless Heights, which will include two previously unheard cover songs, as well as a special “best of” vinyl LP in that region. That is the sound and spirit of Palm Ghosts, as far from the honky-tonks and pedal taverns of their adopted city as one can get. More at home in rainy Manchester or blustery Berlin, the quartet weaves early cinematic dream pop and new wave with brooding post punk. That Summer is a genre defining band, mixing elements of singer/songwriter and pop/rock musings with alternative and punk rock ethos. The band is fronted by songwriter/producer Charles Rocha. Charles Rocha presents an autobiographical collection of songs about loss, time, travel, and struggles with addiction and alcoholism. The band hopes to reach anyone who feels misunderstood, or like they just don't fit in. Rocha began touring at the age of 17 with some of his favorite bands including Bad Religion, NOFX, Lagwagon and Craig's Brother. Born in Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Charles Rocha has lived and created music all over the world. After a brief spell in Nashville, Rocha moved to Florida to work for his grandfather and finish his Bachelor's degree in English. At this time Rocha began recording his own songs from his bedroom. This evolved into That Summer. The Hearth EP Vol. 1 was finished with Roger Lima (Less Than Jake, Rehasher) at The Moathouse Recording Studio in Gainesville, Florida in 2013. 2022 finds Rocha feeling “right at home”; living in Los Angeles and working with Greg Hetson (Circle Jerks, Bad Religion) at Hetson Sound. Most recently, That Summer celebrated its first major radio airplay, when Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Eric Clapton, George Harrison) added their lush, lap-steel laden cover of “Wildflowers” to his playlist on Tom Petty Radio. Currently, Rocha is working with Ian Cross (Janet Jackson, Anthrax, Gwen Stefani, Dishwalla), Ryan Greene (Fat Wreck Chords) and Matt Pinfield to combine their patchwork of styles for what will be a highly anticipated full length album on LA indie-label, Ring Records. Rocha credits the Musicares organization for helping him get settled in Los Angeles, and for saving his life in 2019. Ring Records is an independent rock ‘n' roll record label based in Los Angeles, CA. Established in 2020, Ring Records hopes to provide artists and musicians with a place to call home for their bands, songs and records. On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Felix Cavaliere. The message has always been to stand for peace, love, and happiness. For legendary singer songwriter, Felix Cavaliere, making people feel good is primary to his illustrious 50-year career that includes the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriter Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and Grammy Hall of Fame. Few artists can claim they defined a generation; Felix Cavaliere continues to remind us to keep listening for the world's beauty. The classically trained pianist, born in Pelham, New York, idolized Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, and Sam Cooke. He embraced the Hammond Organ and pioneered a fresh, rock and roll sound. Upon leaving Syracuse University to form the Escorts, and become a backup musician for Joey Dee and the Starliters and later Sandy Scott, who knew that his legendary next stop would be the beginning of an illustrious hall of fame career. Early in 1965, he formed the ‘Young Rascals' with Dino Danelli, Eddie Brigati, and Gene Cornish. That October, they caught the attention of promoter/manager Sid Bernstein with their high-energy set at Long Island's elite club, Barge. Signed to Atlantic Records, and now called The Rascals, the mega hit “Good Lovin'” struck No. 1 in February 1966. They followed suit with a string of hits like “I've Been Lonely Too Long,” “Groovin'(No. 1 in 1967), “How Can I Be Sure,” “A Girl Like You,” “A Beautiful Morning,” and “People Got to Be Free” (No. 1 in 1968). The Rascals are considered the best ‘blue-eyed soul' group to come out of the 1960s, as well as one of the groups with the most record sales. By the early 70s, The Rascals experimented with more jazz-influenced sounds, and moved to Columbia Records. The Rascals disbanded in 1972. Felix Cavaliere's solo career thrived during this decade. He released his self-titled debut album with Todd Rundgren at the producer helm. His follow-up albums were Destiny (1974), Castles in the Air (1979) (Castle in the Air produced another Top 40 hit – “Only a Heart Sees” reached No. 2), Dreams in Motion (1994) and in 2008 he collaborated with Stax guitar legend, Steve Cropper, on the Grammy-nominated Nudge it Up a Notch and again in 2010 with Midnight Flyer. He calls Nashville home base, where he is constantly collaborating and writing new material. He has an active tour schedule with Felix Cavaliere's Rascals. We chat about his autobiography "Memoir Of A Rascal", living in Nashville, his musical legacy, and much more! Visit his website felixcavalieremusic.com for more details.

On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Simon Wells from Simon and The Astronauts featuring Rachel Haden. Simon And The Astronauts really is a fascinating project. Simon Wells is a writer who had attended several of Boo Hewerdine's song-writing workshops. Over the course of a year together Simon and Boo have made this superb album. Enlisting such talents as Karine Polwart, Darden Smith, Findlay Napier, Ben Hewerdine and Chris Pepper they worked in a very unusual way. Simon would bring a lyrical concept to the studio and together with these musicians would spontaneously write and record each track. Simon himself is a fine performance poet and also leads three of the tracks. There is spontaneity to this album that means you hear new music at the moment of its creation. Stylistically it moves between dream-pop, indie-electronica, delicate acoustics and edgy poetry. It was a chance for these musicians to work outside their comfort zones. Simon's vision makes it all hang together in a deeply cohesive way. We chat about Simon and The Astronauts, Elvis Costello, and much more!
