In this episode of Seeing Them Live, host Charles sits down with brothers Matheus and Thiago Khouri of the Brazilian rock band Banda AL9. The duo shares the story of their first concert experience — seeing Paul McCartney at Morumbi Stadium in São Paulo in 2010, when Matheus was just 12 and Thiago was 10. Raised by rock-and-roll-loving parents who saw Queen at the same stadium in 1985, the brothers grew up immersed in the music of the Beatles, Deep Purple, and other classic acts. Their father taught them guitar, and before long they were forming bands with school friends. The name "Banda AL9" itself is a nod to a street name in Portuguese and the number nine, inspired by Jack Black's declaration in School of Rock that nine is a magic number. The conversation traces the band's rise from humble beginnings posting cover songs on Facebook and YouTube in 2013 to becoming a viral sensation. After strategically building a fan base with acoustic covers of fifties and sixties rock classics, they released their debut EP of Portuguese-language originals in 2019, with the song "Ela Me Ligou" becoming their first viral hit in Brazil. The pandemic era saw them recording a live studio album just before lockdowns began, and by 2023, everything changed. Their original song "Charma De Amor" exploded on TikTok and Instagram, reaching audiences far beyond Brazil. This caught the attention of world-famous DJ Steve Aoki, who invited them to perform at Tomorrowland and encouraged them to record in English — leading to the international hit "She Calls Me Love." Matheus and Thiago also discuss their exciting new chapter with Little Steven Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records label. Through a connection with artist Kurt Baker, Steven heard their music, loved it, and signed them — even writing an original song for the band, set for release in July alongside their new album, Hey, Hey, We're Banda AL9. The brothers recount their whirlwind first trip to New York City, which included a live session at SiriusXM's Underground Garage, a free concert at the Cutting Room, and meeting Nickelodeon star Drake Bell. The episode wraps up with an acoustic performance of their latest single, "She Can Do It All," and talk of a potential U.S. tour later in the summer — with a stop in Chicago for fried chicken and deep-dish pizza high on their wish list. BANDS: Banda AL9, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen (E Street Band), Deep Purple, Little Richard, Queen. VENUES: Allianz Parque, Cutting Room, Morumbi Stadium, SiriusXM, Tomorrowland. On today's show, guitarist and singer/songwriter Steve Conte reminisces with Joseph over all the popular spots in New York City they've each played gigs and provides his assessment about just how much the NYC music scene has changed. Steve also plays a few licks on his guitar, including a full live version of his song (co-written with Andy Partridge) FOURTH OF JULY. GUEST OVERVIEW: Steve Conte is an American musician; guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer & music educator – both on tour and in studios around the world. His most recent album, Bronx Cheer was released on Little Steven Van Zandt's label, Wicked Cool Records in the fall of 2021 to great critical acclaim. The album spawned 5 singles, 3 of which were featured as “Coolest Songs In The World” on the Underground Garage Radio Program. Steve is currently working on a new release for Wicked Cool Records on which he has written 5 of the album's 10 songs with his songwriting hero – the incomparable Andy Partridge of XTC. Besides a rich solo-career, Conte has recently been instrumental in helping some legendary artists like the New York Dolls get their groove back. After 6 years, 4 albums and a never-ending World Tour with the Dolls, he joined up with former Hanoi Rocks front man Michael Monroe as guitarist, songwriter and backing vocalist to release 5 albums of new original material. On the Horns And Halos album (2013 Spinefarm) Conte wrote the lion's share of the songs and it was nominated for “Album Of The Year” by the Finnish “Grammys” as well as The Nordic Music Prize. In addition to playing in the USA, Steve has toured extensively in UK, Holland, Belgium and France with his Netherlands-based band as well as playing solo shows in Spain, Italy, Finland & Sweden. https://stevecontemusic.com/

Steve Conte Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson What a great time, as always, when old pal Steve Conte sits down to chat and sing. That voice! Those songs! The stories! Steve played his latest Coolest Song in the World, Fourth of July, co-written with Andy Partridge of XTC, which was a dream come true for Steve and anyone fortunate enough to hear it. He opened the show with that tune, and then almost at the close, after hearing the back story of his admiration, their meeting, growing friendship, and how it bloomed into co-writing 5 of the songs on Steve's upcoming LP coming soon from Little Steven's Wicked Cool Records, and the particulars of this one in particular, after a bit of coaxing, we got to hear it again, with new meaning and appreciation. It's not oft such an opportunity presents. Worthy. And rockin' fun! Steve, who started out on drums, courtesy of his obsession with The Beatles, and Ringo, had a couple of great tales about that, how he switched to guitar, bouncing brother John to bass, exactly where his gift belonged, Steve's first album, first concert, and how that led to his greatest onstage experience. No spoilers here… Nor to his second, third, well, his top five. Suffice it to say, he covered playing with Chuck Berry, singing with Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle, the Everly Brothers, opening for Alice Cooper, getting huge gigs without auditions… joining The New York Dolls, and Michael Monroe, whom after 13 years, he still tours with today, being produced by Todd Rundgren… and the songs that keep pouring out of him, many of which have garnered Coolest Song in the World on Little Steven's Underground Garage. Steve Conte is one of the coolest guys in the world, with one of the greatest rock voices I've ever heard. Steve was a rotating regular at every club I booked and was part of my After Midnight Rock Jam for years. I just can't get enough. Fortunately, I don't have to, and neither do you. When it comes to Vince Clarke, we just can't get enough (was that too obvious?). So "don't go" anywhere (how 'bout that one?)! Born Vincent John Martin on July 3, 1960 in South Woodford, Essex, England, Vince Clarke is a classically trained musician who got the bug to make electronic music after hearing Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark in the late ‘70s, which led to the formation of a band with school chum Andy Fletcher called No Romance In China. Shortly after, the duo added Martin Gore to the mix and called themselves Composition of Sound. With the addition of lead vocalist Dave Gahan, Composition of Sound morphed into Depeche Mode. Following the first Depeche Mode album Speak & Spell, Clarke teamed up with Alison Moyet for Yazoo, releasing two huge albums and a string of singles that hovered near the top of the charts. After Yaz, Clarke took up various production duties and projects, most notably The Assembly, before landing upon his most formidable partnership with Andy Bell in Erasure - an alliance that has resulted in 19 studio albums to date, including 5 that have hit #1 in the UK, and some of the most beloved singles of the past nearly 40 years. That's only scratching the surface, of course, but let's just put it this way…he is an electronic music pioneer, a synth-pop legend, someone who helped to expand the definition of what a rock star looks like and sounds like. Because some might say that we have trouble at times sticking to the topic at hand, we also cover the newly minted adult in Uncle Gregg's house (hint: it's not him), intimacy issues, a genius (question mark?) way to save the planet, jorts, hot knees, and cuddles. Lots o' cuddles. And what does Hollywood legend Jamie Kennedy have to do with Vince Clarke? We're not sure either. One thing's for certain...we will NOT be calling ourselves Only Three Lads US! Awww yeah! Our O3L Spotlight Artist of the Week is UK garage rock trio The Len Price 3, whose 2007 debut album is being reissued on April 7th by Little Steven's Wicked Cool Records. The record will be available on vinyl for the first time, and also contains four unreleased bonus tracks on CD and digital. We are thrilled to play one of those unreleased tracks, the incendiary "Break Your Neck" on this week's episode.

Philadelphia Rockers SORAIA lead singer ZouZou joins STRIKE A CHORD to celebrate their new album Bloom (2022) in both digital streaming and collector's vinyl edition. Bloom was released on Friday October 28th, 2022 and featured LIVE on our show. The last album SORAIA produced was in 2019. This new release explodes from the pressure building up from the last 3 years of not screaming on stage! Lead singer ZouZou recalls the hurdles of getting this record to the studio—but it was worth it. This LP is powerful and passionate—"It's the beginning of another great cycle of our career. We're very excited. We've waited a long time for this one in particular.” AND Steven Van Zandt under Wicked Cool Records is IN on this band! What's the success of your magic? The band's latest single “Tight Lipped” is blowing up the charts! “I think you just persevere in anything you do… if you really want it… you don't stop.” “I Seek Fire” OR should we all take the slow road to love? This track makes you think twice about dating apps. Falling in love is all about chemistry. Taking a shared risk in love is not easy. It should happen organically—BUT can we fight our biology? The pheromones are strong with this album! Support and listen: https://www.soraia.com
Stephanie got a chance for a quick chat with Brad Hallen the Bassist for Boston punk legends Nervous Eaters about their new single "Wild Eyes," and upcoming album on Little Steven Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records. Two members are local Cape Cod boys and they have a show coming up at The Music Room in W. Yarmouth on Aug. 11. The Eaters were contemporaries of acts like the Ramones, The Police, Iggy Pop, The Pretenders, and a host of others, and eventually became the house band for the fabled Boston punk rock club The Rat, where they played with a who's who of punk and new wave luminaries, including The Police, The Ramones, The Cars, Patti Smith, Dead Boys, Iggy Pop, The Stranglers, Go-Go's and many others. Fun Fact: The Cars' Ric Ocasek produced the band's original demos, which got the band signed to Elektra Records back in the day. The band, led by founder Steve Cataldo, also features an amazing lineup of players including other Boston rock vets, bassist Brad Hallen (of Ministry, Ric Ocasek and The Joneses), drummer David McLean (of Willie Alexander's Boom Boom Band) and guitarist/vocalist Adam Sherman (of Private Lightning), and between them, they have recorded and/or toured with such artists as Ministry, Iggy Pop, Aimee Mann, Jane Wiedlin, Susan Tedeschi, Jimmie Vaughan, Lenny Kaye and many others. On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Steve Cataldo and Brad Hallen from The Nervous Eaters. The Nervous Eaters are an original rock and roll band from Boston, MA who helped define the Boston underground garage/punk rock scene of the late 70's. The band was formed by Steve Cataldo on the North Shore of Boston in Beverly, MA. Fueled by the raw sounds of Link Wray, early Chicago Blues greats and British guitar legends Beck, Clapton and Page, the Nervous Eaters created a raw edgy song style uniquely their own. The Nervous Eaters were one of the more popular rock & roll bands in the Northeast, eventually headlining at venues throughout the United States and Europe. The band has opened for numerous National Acts that included Iggy Pop, Squeeze, The Go Go's, The Pretenders, The Police, The Ramones and The Split Enzs. Other bands from the USA, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Asia have covered songs by the Nervous Eaters. Ric Ocasek of The Cars produced a demo for the band that was picked up by Elektra Records and released nationally in 1980. They have also recorded for Penimman Records, No Tomorrow Records and Ace of Hearts Records. The band was signed by Wicked Cool Records in 2021 with new songs premiering in 2022. The current band is Steve Cataldo on lead guitar and lead vocals, Brad Hallen on bass, back-up vocals, Adam Sherman on rhythm guitar, back-up vocals and David McLean on drums. Sherry, Steve, and Brad chat about their new music and much more! Check out nervouseaters.net for more details.
Several Pop-Punk & Pizza listeners have requested The Dollyrots to be guests on the show over the years. It's about time we made it happen for you! Kelly Ogden and Luis Cabezas were able to get their favorite pizza place in Tampa, FL, Lee's Grocery, to open up early just for this episode recording. I chose to have one of my local favorites as well, Chicago Dough Company, in Bourbonnais, IL. It was so much fun chowing down on delicious pizza while talking about their latest release, "Down The Rabbit Hole", which is out now through Wicked Cool Records. The Dollyrots are also currently on tour in the United Kingdom with good friends Bowling For Soup and LIT through April 23rd. Click here for dates! Much Love, Jacques LaMore

During the band's 20-year run, The Dollyrots have released more than a dozen albums and EPs, played all over the world, performed with countless punk and rock and roll mainstays, and had their music featured on television shows and in films. Though the band itself has quite a long and interesting history, its founding members go back even further. Now back on the road in support of a new release — a 24-track collection of B-sides, rarities and covers called Down the Rabbit Hole — on Wicked Cool Records, the story continues for Kelly Ogden and Luis Cabezas. Prior to a recent show at X-Ray Arcade, The Dollyrots welcomed My First Band host Tyler Maas into the band's RV to talk about Down the Rabbit Hole, the ongoing tour, upcoming European shows with Bowling For Soup and Lit, and the possibility their biggest hit is still to come. Over the course of the conversation, Ogden and Cabezas spoke about meeting in middle school, dating in high school, going to college together and starting a band, and moving to Los Angeles with no money and a bunch of exotic pets. Along the way, they talked about being featured in a commercial, their appreciation for people like Joan Jett and Steven Van Zandt, and how much they appreciate their drummer Justin, who also makes a cameo in the episode. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Jim and Mike Interview KELLY OGDEN from the Punk Band THE DOLLYROTS! Jim has been a fan of the band since 2007 when they released their cover of "brand new key". We had a lot of fun talking to Kelly about the new album (Down the Rabbit Hole), her acting debut on CSI, playing with Bowling for Soup, being signed to blackheart records, traveling with kids, Rabbits, Todd Rundgren on a train ... and more! *********** ABOUT THE DOLLYROTS: The Dollyrots are a Los Angeles, California based pop punk band made up of Kelly Ogden (vocals/bass) and Luis Cabezas (guitar/vocals). Since their formation 18 years ago the husband and wife duo has played over a thousand shows in the US and Europe, shared the stage with many of their idols, and released six studio albums along with several EPs, singles, splits, and a live concert film. Their last 3 albums have peaked in the Top 20 of the Billboard Heatseeker's chart, earning heavy rotation on Sirius/XM radio and followed releases on Lookout Records & Joan Jett's Blackheart Records. What started as a hobby for New College of Florida students (and childhood friends) Kelly Ogden (bass/vocals) and Luis Cabezas (guitar) became a career when Ogden and Cabezas decided to make their band, The Dollyrots, a full-time gig in 2001. The duo set off on a road trip to find a new home for the group and settled in Los Angeles in 2002; once there, the pair set about honing a pop-punk sound inspired by the Ramones, the Pixies, the Sex Pistols, Nirvana, and Green Day. Two years later, the band signed with Lookout!/Panic Button Records and released Eat My Heart Out. Following release of their debut the band appeared onscreen on CSI:NY performing two songs off the album. While playing the Vans Warped Tour in 2006 the band members met Joan Jett, who was so taken by the Dollyrots that she offered them a spot on her Blackheart Records label roster after hearing demos of their upcoming LP. The Dollyrots' second album Because I'm Awesome debuted on Blackheart in 2007. The album spawned several singles that made an impact on radio and appeared on film/TV (Easy A, Brave, The Vampire Diaries, Greek, Reaper.) A year later they recorded a version of Jett's song “Bad Reputation” for the soundtrack to the film Endless Bummer, followed up three years later with the slickly produced A Little Messed Up. The first single off this effort, “California Beach Boy”, was featured with a live performance by the band on The Price Is Right. The Dollyrots left Blackheart after that, releasing an EP on their own Arrested Youth label. For their next project, the group turned to crowd-funding site Kickstarter, launching a wildly successful campaign that yielded 2012's The Dollyrots. Working again with co-producer John Fields, the independently released set featured Ogden and Cabezas firmly in charge for the first time in their career as they played all the instruments (save for a few parts done by producer Fields) and had final say over all facets of the process. By this point the Dollyrots had gone through a number of different drummers and generally operated as duo with guest musicians in the studio and on their various tours. Their 2014 release, Barefoot and Pregnant, was recorded during Ogden's pregnancy and was subsequently followed by the birth of the couple's first child. The album fared well critically and reached number seven on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. The all-acoustic Love Songs, Werewolves, and Zombies was released digitally in 2013 to the band's PledgeMusic supporters, and received a public release the following year. The Dollyrots continued to successfully fund their projects via crowd-funding and in 2016, they released their first concert album, the ambitious, double-disc/DVD set Family Vacation: Live in Los Angeles. That same year also saw the release of the three-song EP Mama's Gonna Knock You Out. The end of the year saw them working on two new projects, another kid and their next album. The couple's baby girl was born in November and the John Fields-produced Whiplash Splash was released in early 2017. This was followed by a 7-inch single Get Radical, released on Little Steven Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records. The band most recently released their album of B-Sides, Rarities and Covers entitled "DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE" Be sure to visit their website at : www.thedollyrots.com for a ton of cool, unique items (we mention some in the interview) Jim and Mike Talk Music can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. Brianna Sig - or B-Sig as her friends call her - is the drummer Soraia, the Zou Zou Mansour-led Philly rock band signed to Little Steven's Wicked Cool Records label. For the past five years, she has anchored a band that otherwise has seen more than its share of personnel changes. She has played the drums since she was in her early teens and has fought her way up the Philly rock ladder to tour the US and Europe, open shows shows for the likes of Joan Jett, and become one of the musicians I respect the most. She's an honorary Meddling Kid, and it is her kick ass drumming you hear on my 2016 singles "Miss America" and "Puzzle Piece." She also knows a good pun when it hits her and she ain't afraid to say it out loud! We got together a while back at Michael's Restaurant in Glenside, PA, a place with one of the best-maintained salad bars I've ever enjoyed. They also do their baking on premises. As long as you don't get a booth too close to the bathroom, you are golden! Please enjoy this fun conversation with the incomparable Brianna Sig!
On this episode of 1 on 1 with Bill Alexander, Bill talks with The Dollyrots. The Dollyrots are an American punk rock band formed in 2000, composed of wife Kelly Ogden (bass, lead vocals) and husband Luis Cabezas (guitar, backing vocals). They have released six studio albums and are currently under their own label, Arrested Youth Records. They have also released albums under Panic Button (part of Lookout! Records), Joan Jett's Blackheart Records, Little Steven's Wicked Cool Records.Kelly and Luis talk about their music career, their kids (who join us at the beginning of the program), and what is in the future for them. Summer: it's a time to get dirty and a time to shine. It's only natural, then, that summertime 2021 will see the release of a collection of new songs capturing both sides of that spectrum: 'Still Dirty,' the rollicking Wicked Cool Records debut release from Portland, Maine's Kris Rodgers & The Dirty Gems, which drops Friday, July 23. Known as “rock n' roll's secret weapon”, band leader and front man Kris 'Fingers' Rodgers has been a recording & touring sideman in top touring garage rock and power pop acts like The Connection, Scott Sorry, The New Trocaderos, Bullet Proof Lovers, and Kurt Baker Band for years. The fast-paced, horn-accented “I Can Still Feel It” is the band's new single, with the feel of a rave-up a la '70s-era J. Geils Band. “It's got that classic sound but it's new and fresh,” Kris remarks. He adds, "I Can Still Feel It is about that initial excitement you experience discovering what you're passionate about. The “wow” moment." Philadelphia rock quartet Soraia is giving fans new music for the start of the New Year. The band will release a 7" single titled "Tight-Lipped" (with a b-side cover of Aerosmith's "Angel," ft. a guest appearance by their Wicked Cool Records labelmate Jessie Wagner) on January 8th. Stream/buy "Tight-Lipped" here: https://orcd.co/tightlipped. Of the new track, frontwoman ZouZou Mansour says, ""Tight-Lipped" is about a woman who politely refuses to challenge the status quo and direction of her life. It's a final recognition of the part she has played in her own oppressive censoring - a soulful rebuke of her former beliefs on how to live. But by the end of the song, it becomes a triumphant declaration of who she now is: "'Meet Ophelia--no more promises. I refuse to be so tight-lipped.'" The single follows on the heels of Soraia's most recent studio LP 'Dig Your Roots' which is streaming here: https://orcd.co/digyourroots. That album was produced and engineered by Geoff Sanoff (Bruce Springsteen, Fountains Of Wayne, Dashboard Confessional) and spawned a number of singles, including "Evergreen", "Wild Woman" and "Superman is Gone." To celebrate the release of "Tight-Lipped", Soraia will play a special event to be live-streamed from The Bowery Electric on January 15th at 8pm ET. Tickets are available at https://bit.ly/35gjysC and are also good for “on-demand” viewing through 1/22.
