This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.splitzoneduo.comFor your holiday listening, Alex and Richard take on dozens of questions from SplitZoneDuo.com's paid subscribers. Let's start with the juicy but sad breakup of Notre Dame and USC, move to the coaching carousel, and then have some fun. A rough listing of the questions featured in this episode, in order:* What's actually going on with Notre Dame and USC breaking up their football rivalry, and whose fault is it?* What is Michigan's realistic play in the coaching carousel, and who could they actually hire?* Is Michigan likely to have a coach in place by the bowl game, or is that assumption wrong?* Is a bridge coach (specifically Biff Poggi) a viable or sensible option for Michigan?* Kyle Whittingham vs. Brian Kelly: Who is the better “CEO” head coach?* With so many Power 4 openings, is the best path to a top job now being a successful P4 coordinator?* What happened at Ohio, how should they move forward, and why did they handle it better than Michigan?* Why does Warde Manuel still have a job (pending investigation)?* Is Pat Fitzgerald possibly a worse pure football coach than Jonathan Smith but better positioned because of NIL and donor buy-in? Is “coach who can unlock donor money” now a core hiring archetype?* Will Michigan State's new $400 million donation allow them to immediately spend big on the roster?* What are agency “speed-dating” events for coaches and athletic directors?* Does the modern college football calendar make it harder for FCS programs to reset or fire coaches?* Will the calendar lead to more long-tenured FCS coaches staying put at big programs?* What are the chances Ed Orgeron resurfaces on LSU's staff?* Why didn't Dan Mullen come up for any of the open head coaching jobs?* What's really wrong at Florida State beyond portal hits and misses?* If an AD tried to reverse-engineer Curt Cignetti, what traits would they be looking for?* What goes on your CFB trip bucket list?* New York or LA: The better CFB city?* Why do national college football narratives so often default to NY/LA logic when the sport itself doesn't?* What are our goals for this podcast in 2026?Thank you so much for being part of what we do. We'll see you around New Year's Eve to get you set for the CFP quarterfinals and FCS title game.Producer: Anthony Vito

They discuss Jeff Brohm, Adam Stenavich, Kyle Whittingham and others, as well as the level of appeal of the Michigan job, and why timing isn't on their side. Another piece of college football tradition has been lost due to the changing of the times. On Monday, it was announced that the Notre Dame and USC rivalry will be cancelled as both sides could not reach an agreement to extend the series. Andy Staples, Ross Dellenger and Steven Godfrey discuss what caused yet another casualty in college football. Is this another move that we can blame on TV networks? Will we ever see this game return? While the schools are now looking for opponents to replace that game, Notre Dame also announced that it is finalizing a two-year deal to face BYU starting in 2026. The crew discusses the matchup that could have had huge CFP implications this season. Then, the guys discuss what non-CFP bowl games they are most interested in. They dive into the bowl that has had a meteoric rise in popularity, the Pop-Tarts Bowl. The crew looks at what makes this bowl so intriguing and they discuss the matchup on the field that will see #22 Georgia Tech take on #12 BYU. Plus, Godfrey gets upset that Ross was the only one of the group who got reached out to for a Pop-Tarts care package. They also take a look at what other bowl matchups they are most interested in watching.Later, the guys update everyone on the continued Michigan search. Andy, Ross and Godfrey discuss interim head coach Biff Poggi's strong comments the other day that included phrases like "a malfunctioning organization" and "before I go smoke myself to death with cigars, I want to fix this program." They chat about if Poggi has a legitimate shot at the role and who are some other candidates that could fit well in. Lastly, the guys briefly talk about Bobby Petrino going to be Bill Belichick's offensive coordinator at North Carolina.0:00:00 - USC vs. Notre Dame rivalry game ended10:48 - USC announces series vs. BYU17:10 - Who is to blame for USC/Notre Dame?27:26 - Pop-Tarts bowl phenomenon & matchup38:11 - Other intriguing non-CFP bowl games41:57 - Michigan coaching search continues55:43 - Bobby Petrino to UNC as OC  Subscribe to the College Football Enquirer on your favorite podcast app:

Jay Greeson and Chris Lee preview the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl between Texas and Michigan, and make predictions on the outcome and the over-under. Topics include: Michigan coach Sherrone Moore was fired after the Ohio State loss for a personal scandal. Interim coach Biff Poggi, who has an interesting life story, will take over. Is this a net positive or net negative for Michigan? Texas had bigger aspirations than the Cheeze-It Bowl as the Longhorns were the preseason No. 1 team. However, Texas played well down the stretch, winning six of seven games, and that included wins over Vanderbilt and Texas A&M. Michigan will be without its two best pass rushers in Derrick Moore and Jaishawn Barnham, as well as fifth-year starting offensive lineman Giovanni El-Hadi, Texas is without three All-American-level defenders in safety Michael Taafe, linebacker Anthony Hill and cornerback Malik Muhammad, in addition to key defensive linemen Trey Moore and Ethan Burke. On offense, the Longhorns will be without running back CJ Baxter and Jerrick Gibson as well as receiver DeAndre Moore. With all those defensive stars out, does this favor a more offensive-oriented game? Michigan got it done on the ground with a pair of terrific running backs Justice Haynes (formerly of Alabama) and Jordan Marshall. Michigan's Bryce Underwood was one of the more highly-sought freshmen out of high school. Underwood's passing numbers (nine touchdowns, six picks) were ordinary, but Underwood can run and could benefit from so much of the Longhorns' defense being out. Texas's Arch Manning got better as the season progressed and should be highly motivated for this one. The first round of the College Football Playoff is in the books. Oregon, Ole Miss, Alabama and Miami move on to the quarterfinal matchups on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. While some of the matchups in the first round this season were more competitive than last year, the lop-sided victories over the Group of Five schools, Tulane and James Madison, have sparked debate on whether there should be G5 schools in the CFP. Andy Staples and Steven Godfrey have a heated debate on this topic. Ross Dellenger also joins in as the three discuss what changes should be made for future College Football Playoffs. Then, they dive deeper into the matchup that saw Alabama come away victorious. The guys discuss all of the talk, leading up to the game, about Kalen DeBoer and if he would be leaving for Michigan or potentially even fired if he lost this game. They also talk about how Alabama handled their early deficit, in contrast to how they played in the SEC title game, and if the Crimson Tide can make a run.Later, the guys discuss the Michigan coaching search and where it is at. DeBoer appears to be out, especially since he is still in the CFP, and now Michigan's rumored other target is off of the table. Arizona State's Kenny Dillingham has signed an extension to stay with the Sun Devils, eliminating him from the Michigan opening. Biff Poggi is the interim head coach. Is there a chance he could become the permanent choice? Some other ideas are tossed out about a coach with the last name Harbaugh and a coach who just stepped down in Utah. Come get caught up on all things CFP and beyond with College Football Enquirer.0:00:00 - Recap of the CFP First Round8:38 - Changes the CFP should make32:38 - Alabama comes back to beat Oklahoma46:29 - Update on Michigan's coaching search Subscribe to the College Football Enquirer on your favorite podcast app:

Michigan football decided to take the training wheels off freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood in Week 3 against Central Michigan and it paid immediate dividends. A week after the offense struggled mightily against Oklahoma on the road, the Wolverines compiled 625 yards of total offense as Underwood passed for 235 yards and rushed for 114 more. Needless to say, the Wolverine won't be "taking the air out of the ball ever again, not with this guy and taking snaps," according to acting head coach Biff Poggi. Andrew and Tony open the show by discussing the lessons learned from the Central Michigan blowout victory, and then play a game of "overreaction/underreaction/proper reaction" from Michigan football's first three weeks. Then after a quick break, the guys talk all things Nebraska and a fun matchup against sophomore Dylan Raiola, the son of former Detroit Lions offensive lineman Dominic Raiola. Just winning Saturday won't erase what happened in Norman last week. Cleaning up most of the mistakes and winning would be a good start though. Biff Poggi is the interim head coach and he'll be at the helm as Central Michigan visits The Big House. Joining us with his thoughts on that and so much more is beat writer Aaron McMann from MLive.

Week 2 is in the books and Michigan football's huge game against Oklahoma did not go how the Wolverines would've hoped. In Bryce Underwood's first ever road start, the Wolverines struggled in most departments and were beaten, 24-13, by a tough Sooners squad. Tony and Andrew open the show by discussing what went wrong for the Wolverines in Norman and where they must go from here to get the train back on the tracks. Then after the break, the guys discuss the Central Michigan game and why Biff Poggi was named as the interim head coach for the CMU and Nebraska games. And last but not least, it's time for some college football picks for a huge Week 3 slate. Read all about the Michigan Wolverines by heading to our website at freep.com/sports.

2 hour and 6 minutes This episode was recorded at Champions Circle's third golf outing, on a golf course outdoors, so apologies for the background noise. Huge thank you to Alejandro Zúñiga for his production assistance and for sitting in on the first segment while Brian was stuck behind a funerial procession. MAX BREDESON, DOMINIC ZVADA, & MARLIN KLEIN Starts at 1:00 Zvada explains why kickers are so much better today: access to technology originally developed for golf that shows their spin rate and trajectory and distance, plus training techniques. Bredeson discusses The Game last year and how they went hunting for gaps, says anyone who plays TE can do all the things they do. Klein turned it up in the bowl game. We get a crash course in kicker and TE lingo.  2. BRYCE UNDERWOOD, JADYN DAVIS, & JORDAN MARSHALL Starts at 21:36 Underwood and Davis set up challenges for each other, how they make each other better. Marshall and Haynes were full go in spring, happy splitting reps. Least favorite guy to get hit by: Brandyn Hillman; Marshall was happy that he and Jaishawn were on his team in spring. What role the fans played in Bryce's recruitment. How does money play a role in the locker room these days? How they see the Martindale defense. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]  3. MIKEY KEENE, DAVIS WARREN, & JUSTICE HAYNES Starts at 39:43 Keene on preparing to play Michigan: what they could teach each other. Haynes similar thing: what was it like playing against Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Thing they prepared for Michigan: wow, the blitzes! Haynes lists all the reasons he came to Michigan until we tell him "It's okay, the quarterbacks are aware we run the ball." On platooning: I want to be able to run around with my kids after football. Warren on playing Ohio State. New faces in the QB room: type of guys on the team. 4. DONAVEN MCCULLEY, SEMAJ MORGAN, PEYTON O'LEARY, & JOE TAYLOR Starts at 59:01 McCulley also shares what it's like to be a (true Fr) quarterback facing Michigan (not fun!). O'Leary and Taylor talk about the walk-on experience, what's going to happen with the 15 guys who used to be walk-ons. Other walk-ons who are impressing (Andrighetto at safety). Learning to play WR: you get a feel for where you need to be for the quarterback, playing in space. How much has the offense changed. Who's come along since last year: Tevis Metcalf for sure.   5. ERNEST HAUSMANN, TJ GUY, & DOMINIC NICHOLS Starts at 1:26:05 HONESTLY THIS WAS OUR BEST INTERVIEW. Ernest and TJ are starting a podcast. Guy on how many positions you need to know to play OLB. How he and Nichols feel about dropping into coverage. Hausmann shares he's got to be in better shape to be the dot because he can't be breathing hard between plays as he's giving the calls. What were they seeing versus Ohio State. "Ern was going crazy in that game." How do you grade LBs? It was quiet.     6. GREG CRIPPEN, GIO EL-HADI AND ANDREW BABALOLA Starts at 1:30:14 Crippen how it feels to be The Guy finally (not counting his eggs; he's got to win it). Why El-Hadi is just more comfortable on the left. Babalola on the difference between HS and college, and how he compares to the other guys as freshmen. What's it like being a five-star recruit. How they see the fronts and make the line calls. Why is OL hard: gotta learn the playbook first, including all the adjustments. How to make decisions on the fly: all about communication. Gio doesn't play with a mouthguard so he can communicate better. If Michigan football had to make a basketball team: PG: Semaj Morgan SG: Bryce Underwood SF: TJ Guy PF: Lugard Edokpayi C: Babalola/Sprague       8. ROD MOORE, ZEKE BERRY, TJ METCALF AND SHAMARI EARLS Starts at 1:43:41 Rod Moore recovery: 85%. Had to come back mentally before but he's staying as locked in as he can. TJ Metcalf on the portal experience. Zeke Berry on the transition to corner: switching up to #1 was a little iffy at first, but the look is the same, got used to it. Did he see the IU pick earlier in the game? No it was in practice the week before. Still a jack of all trades. Shamari on track, he's picking up all the calls. Receivers to watch? Marsh, Goodwin, Semaj. Who's the fastest guys out there. Who's the biggest hitter: B-Hill, then TJ then Rod. Transition to Wink last year: had to get comfortable with each other. 9. TRE WILLIAMSON, DERRICK MOORE, AND RAYSHAUN BENNY Starts at 1:55:39 Rayshaun going into this year: he's been out there, acted like a starter from previous years. Tre on difference with Michigan. He loves the depth, no other school had the type of talent he was playing around. D-Mo on playing Edge, started with two of the four positions (Rush, End, Buck and SAM). What would he say to his freshman self? Biff Poggi made this program the same program as at St. Frances. He was injured last year, the production was always there, leading the team in pressures early. Benny on coming back from his injury last year. MUSIC: "Intro (A Star in the Sky)"—Heavy Weighs the King "Stand Well Well"—Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 "It'll All Work Out"—Blake Mills “Across 110th Street”—JJ Johnson and his Orchestra
