Back in March I took a field trip down to South Florida for the Hungryland 100, not to run it, but to do my thing, cook, cheer, hug, eat, hang out, and to grow my circle of ultra-running community family.Hungryland Slough is a beautiful area in Palm Beach County and hosts part of the Ocean to Lake Trail. There is such an abundance of wildlife and plants there! Some are scary, like gators and snakes, but no runners, volunteers, spectators, or podcasters were injured. Austin Brennan was making his first attempt at the 100 mile distance and had a big goal of going sub-24. This is no easy trail for a sub-24 with a good amount of mud and standing water, but he not only accomplished his goal, he won the race. Austin is a member of Team Runfluent-Fulwise, and to the surprise of no-one, they are making big waves in the Florida Ultra-running scene with regular appearances on the podium. Austin is fairly new to the ultra-running scene, but I think it's safe to say he's not going anywhere. Just like a lot of us, he has found his happy place. I hope you enjoy getting to know him and the Hungryland 100 a little better.@austin_brennan13Hungryland - March 22, 2025 (ultrasignup.com)Home | WalksWithWhit@pacertravelSquirrel's Nut Butter | All Natural Anti Chafing & Skin Restoration Salves (squirrelsnutbutter.com)St. Pete Running Company Florida | Top 50 Running Store (stpeterunningco.com)Don't Just Run, Run Fluent (dontjustrun.com)Run Natural CoachJeff Galloway | The official site of Run-Walk-RunRun 4 a Reason's Rough Runners – Road Runners, Trail Runners, All Runners (roughrunnersr4r.com)Revolution Running Co. – Run fast. Located in the North Cascades of Washington State, Hidden Lake Trail is a moderately strenuous out and back trail that passes through thick cool forests, vast open wildflower filled meadows, & rocky slopes, before ending at an amazing fire lookout on top a steep rocky pinnacle. Two disappearances on the trail, Spring 2021 & Fall 2019, have puzzled searchers to this day. Join us this week as we discuss the disappearances and subsequent recoveries of Rachel Lakoduk & Tom Simonseth. This episode is sponsored by Magic Mind. Hikers now able to get to Kinney Lake, but repairs to the rest will take years.
We get an update on the trail, which has been fought in court since 2019.
It was four years ago that we got a chance to sit down with the owner of the Sun Valley Ranch about the lawsuit he filed against the U.S. Forest Service over the Stanley to Redfish Lake Trail. As the trail is about to open, despite his ongoing appeal in the 9th Circuit Court, we wanted to revisit that interview, where he outlines his concerns about the project.
Luis Cocco has done it again with another 200+ mile feat, from last year's HERO 200 in his dojang to now the Lollipop 240! Luis officially finished the Lollipop 240 in 4 Days, 8 Hours, and 32 minutes! A journey took from the beach at Hobe Sound onto the Ocean to Lake Trail, circumnavigating Lake Okeechobee and back onto the Ocean to Lake Trail and back to where it all started on the beach at Hobe Sound. Luis battled the elements from thunderstorms to racing a prescribed burn! Regardless of what was thrown at him, he got it done! Luis has a lot of 100-mile experience having done the Daytona 100, Iron Horse 100, Keys 100, the Pier-to-Pier 200k, the Long Haul 100, the Lost 118, and the Vero Octopus 100! He's also done Badwater Salton Sea and the Lake to Ocean 100 (Winter Edition), as well as his 200 miles at Hero Martial Arts running 9,696 laps (48.5 laps per Mile) on his 108.9167 foot course. Another big factor into this Lollipop 240 was raising money for the Cypress Creek Bridge Restoration Project. The Loxahatchee Chapter of the Florida Trail Association built and continues to maintain this 61-mile trail in Southeast Florida. Due to flooding this past fall the Cypress Creek Bridge is in dire need of rehabilitation. To date of posting, he has raised $10,026 to help rebuild the bridge out there! So THANK YOU to everyone who donated!
OutdoorsJonathan Dickinson State ParkJonathan Dickinson State Park is a Florida State Park and historic site located in Martin County, Florida, between Hobe Sound and Tequesta. The park includes the Elsa Kimbell Environmental Education and Research Center and a variety of natural habitats: sand pine scrub, pine flatwoods, mangroves, and river swamps. The Loxahatchee River, designated a National Wild and Scenic River in 1985 (the first in Florida), runs through the park. The park is also along the Ocean to Lake Trail. The 10,500-acre park is named for Jonathan Dickinson, a Quaker merchant whose vessel shipwrecked nearby in 1696.During World War II, the land the park now occupies was home to Camp Murphy, a top-secret radar training school with over 6,600 men. The land became a state park in 1950.Far upriver is the Trapper Nelson Interpretive Site, the restored homestead of a man who came to this area in the 1930s and lived off the land, trapping and selling furs. On February 23rd, Andy "Croom" Mathews started the Lollipop 240. This is a journey that starts at Hobe Sound beach and follows the Ocean to Lake Trail, it then circumnavigates the entirety of Lake Okeechobee until you're back onto the Ocean to Lake Trail and heading back to where it all started at Hobe Sound beach. Andy's journey took him 4 Days, 16 Hours, 25 Minutes, and 33 Seconds. He's also joined by Mark Cudak who joined him for some of the most crucial miles in his journey. The Lake to Ocean Trail runs for approximately 61.5 miles, west from Hobe Sound Beach to Lake Okeechobee where it ends at the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail (LOST) Trailhead. This section crosses ancient sand dunes with scrub oaks and sand pines to pine flat woods, palmetto and oak hammocks, cypress swamp and wet prairies. It covers Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Riverbend Park, the Loxahatchee Slough, the Hungryland Slough, JW Corbett, and the Dupuis Reserve. Circumnavigating Lake Okeechobee is a 118-mile journey. Many people are familiar with the LOST 118, a race that runs around the lake, the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail offers spectacular views. On the east side of the lake, the views are primarily of islands and vast open waters. The west side of the lake is shallow and marshy.

North of Thompson Falls, the Fishtrap Lake Trail is a lush and quiet loop around two forested lakes. Starting at a secluded Forest Service campground, the narrow and well-maintained trail circles Fishtrap and Upper Fishtrap Lakes, passing through stands of ponderosa pine, larch, and beargrass. The lake stays in view most of the way, and you're likely to be the only hiker enjoying the trail. When you wrap up this 3.5-mile loop, pitch your tent at one of the 13 campsites and take your canoe or kayak out for an evening paddle on the glassy water. Photo by Alison Kreiss

The Camas Lake Trail, just south of Hamilton, is one of the easiest ways to explore the spectacular Bitterroot Mountains. This well-shaded trail climbs moderately to the shores of a sparkling alpine lake, ascending about 1,000 feet in three miles. Pleasant campsites dot the shores of Camas Lake, and the rising cutthroat and rainbow trout will lift the spirits and bend the rods of any angler. If you're looking for more adventure, use the lake as a basecamp for scrambling up East, West, and Middle Camas Peaks, which are also popular backcountry skiing destinations in the winter! The Setting Trick: Conversations with World Class Bridge Players
Our first ever sponsor to be featured on The Setting Trick is Mike Levine. As many bridge players know, a match up against the Levine Team should be dreaded, unless one enjoys being demolished. In tow with his ultimate dream team, which includes two partnerships considered by many to be the greatest pairs of all time, Mike recently won the first 3 North American Online Bridge Championships in a row, a feat of absolute dominance. In life, Mike Levine has somehow managed to top his massive successes at the bridge table; he is one of the world's most illustrious inventors, holding more than 60 patents. Through his shared insights on topics like population control, I got to see the creative force behind his many inventions. I am excited to share my conversation with this fascinating man. Episode Highlights: 2:28- The progression to the inception of Mike Levine's current team 8:34- Mike isn't the weakest player on his team??? 11:25- Mike's approach to bridge is understanding concepts logically, rather than memorizing 15:50- Mike's recipe analogy to bridge 18:10- Mike doesn't fully subscribe to the common wisdom for pros that “Your job is not to win. Your job is to not lose.” 19:00- Why Mike is willing to spend so much money to hire top players 25:10- Why Mike's physical disability does not hinder him 29:04- The Lake Trail that Mike brought to existence 34:30- Mike's education 36:05- One of Mike's joke patents 39:52- Mike's solution to global warming: prevent overpopulation 44:05- More thoughts on population control 48:00- “All things complicated are not useful” 53:40- Is Stayman really a convention? 58:35- An example of Mike's “wonder bids” 1:03:15- Take a glimpse into Mike's mind as a bidding theoretician

Check-ins with schools during the 2020 global pandemic
Today I am joined by Dr. Jeanette. She is a pediatrician, wife to her amazing anesthesiologist husband of almost 9 years, and mom to four active and rambunctious city kids ranging from age 1 to almost 8 years. She’s lived in all the major cities of the northeast and Mid-Atlantic and now calls Baltimore home. In her free time, she is involved in her church, cheers on her kids at their sporting events and explores her home city. Recently, Dr. Jeanette traveled to Estes Park, Colorado and Rocky Mountain National Park. In today’s episode, we discuss: They flew in on a direct flight from Baltimore to Denver arriving at 9pm. Then, they took a shuttle to the car rental center and stayed the night at a local Holiday Inn that was able to accommodate her family of 6. Tip: Denver now has a new luggage drop area on the south side of the 5th floor for United Airlines that is never crowded! The next day they drove an hour and a half to Estes Park and checked in to their Airbnb. vrbo.com/949508 Hiking took up a large part of their trip as they explored the park and all of the lakes and trails in the area. Tip: Head to parking lots very early to get a parking spot or it will be full. Tip: Another reason to start early is that they get a lot of rain later in the day. Tip: Pack snacks and lunch so you don’t have to worry about it when you’re hiking. The kids really enjoyed playing “Eye Spy” and The Junior Ranger Program including their binoculars, headlamps and compasses. Her family hiked and explored RMNP for 3 days. They also took one day to relax. In the town of Estes Park, they shopped a bit and ate at two restaurants: Nepal's Cafe and Cafe de Pho Thai. Tip: Estes Park has a nice children’s play area in the center of town. They did not have many issues with the altitude change but gave themselves a day to adjust at the beginning in Denver as well. Shuttle buses are available in the area from town and also between trailheads. Her family really enjoyed Ride a Kart Amusements for a fun escape from nature. They were lucky enough to see some deer, birds and many chipmunks. She recommends Mill’s Lake Trail for an off the beaten path trail with less traffic. Her and her family truly enjoyed the trip and felt like it was very refreshing. Segment still needs to be added to the end so not sure if it will need more notes here.
