In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by author, backpacker, and our resident alien expert, Mike Clelland. We made an honest attempt to discuss ultralight backpacking during this one, and although we do touch on the subject some, the bulk of this conversation is dedicated to owls, aliens, and all things paranormal activity. Mike has become the preeminent expert of the interplay between owls and UFO citings, which may not sound like a thing, however Mike has accrued a lifetime of stories from folks who have experiences that say that it is. If owls and aliens don't sound like your jam, we encourage you to give this one a shot, as Mike's long standing intense passion for these subjects turns out to be awfully contagious; Chaunce and I are thoroughly entertained. We also discuss the pros and cons of traditional vs. self-publishing, which Mike has done both, but really this is mostly aliens and owls.  Warning: This episode includes discussions of rape, death, and child loss in the context of aliens. If any of these topics are triggering, we encourage you to skip this interview. We wrap the show with the news that the Backpacker Radio crew is headed to AT Trail Days, news of a woman who set the overall FKT on the Florida Trail, Knorr Side recipe recommendations, the shortest roast in the history of roasts, what animal we'd train to be our hiking companion, the triple crown of memes, dog's cornchip paws, and more. In this episode, Hunter Leininger shares how he is preparing for the Triple Crown of 200s, how he is able to find the joy in suffering, and his biggest tips to mentally get through any endurance challenge. Hunter's athletic career began at the young age of 7, inspired by his father, Jeff Leininger, an adventure racer himself. Determined to follow in his father's footsteps, Hunter completed his first 6-hour adventure race, marking the beginning of a series of groundbreaking achievements. By age 11, Hunter became the youngest finisher of the 24-Hour Adventure Racing National Championship, a record previously held by a 23-year-old. He continued to push boundaries, setting world records as the youngest finisher in several grueling events, including a 3-day expedition race at age 12, a 4-day Adventure Racing World Series race at 14, and the 7-day Adventure Racing World Championship at 16. At 18, he was the youngest competitor in Amazon's World's Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji, completing the 11-day race alongside his father. His recent accomplishments include setting the Fastest Known Time (FKT) for running 200 miles across Florida, completing the distance in 55 hours, 59 minutes, and 45 seconds, surpassing the previous record held by David Goggins by over 14 hours. Additionally, he became the fastest person to run the length of Florida, covering 1,110 miles on the Florida Trail in 21 days and 11 hours. And most recently, setting a record for traversing Iceland self-supported! Hunter's story is a testament to the power of determination, the significance of a supportive environment, and the relentless pursuit of one's passions. His achievements continue to inspire a new generation to chase their dreams, regardless of age. Summary In this conversation, I interview Nick Fowler, a renowned thru-hiker and FKT (Fastest Known Time) record breaker. We discuss Nick's experiences with thru-hiking and FKT attempts and dive into his record-breaking Pacific Crest Trail hike. Nick shares his training approach and the challenges he faced during his PCT FKT attempt, including health issues and a hurricane. The conversation highlights the determination and resilience required for long-distance hiking and FKT pursuits. We talk a little bit about my own experiences on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and the Pacific Northwest Trail (PNT). We also dive into the book that Nick wrote about the Pacific Northwest Trail record. Overall, Nick is just an amazing backpacker, thru hiker, and everything in between. Support Nick's book: https://pntbook.com/ Takeaways Thru-hiking and FKT attempts require determination, resilience, and careful planning. Training for FKT attempts often involves strength training, long-distance running, and building up mileage gradually. Challenges during FKT attempts can include health issues, adverse weather conditions, and difficult terrain. Thru-hiking and FKT attempts are not only physical challenges but also mental and emotional journeys. He faced challenges such as difficult stream crossings, extreme heat, and physical ailments. He has written a book about his PNT FKT and plans to attempt more FKTs in the future. Sound Bites "I've always known about thru-hiking. I've always known about the Appalachian Trail and everything, but I never really gave it any thought until I started getting into big day hikes." "I started with running a half marathon a day in January, 2021. And then I bumped it up to a marathon a day with a couple of rest days a week in February, 2021." "I was struggling to open water bottle lids. I was drinking water out of trash cans." "I started off with 5,000 calories a day. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Nicole “ShotGun” Kulovitz. Nicole only recently began long distance backpacking, but in just the last few years, has thru-hiked the CDT, Arizona Trail, Florida Trail, Hayduke, Pacific Northwest Trail, Oregon Desert Trail, Grand Enchantment Trail, Long Trail, Timberline Trail, Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail, and the Low to High Trail. In other words, she somehow has packed a lifetime of miles into a four year span. We learn all about her instant infatuation with backpacking, learning lessons from a failed thru-hike attempt, how she financially is able to make long distance backpacking a lifestyle, her experiences as a wildland firefighter, some epic stories of degeneracy, and more. This is a fun chat, good news for the sort of person who's into fun. From the Gulf of Mexico to the St Johns River is the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway., which was once planned to be the Cross Florida Barge Canal.  The park is named after the famed environmental activist who opposed the canal and was instrumental in getting it deauthorized.  The barge canal was about thirty percent complete when construction ceased.  Now it is a 110-mile linear state park.  This week we discuss a few of the notable places along the greenway along with some of the challenges that it still faces. The official website for the Cross Florida Greenway.https://www.floridastateparks.org/Cross-FloridaPlease subscribe! In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Lyla Harrod. Lyla is is a sober, queer, transgender woman currently on the last leg of her triple crown and has accrued an absurd amount of trail miles in just the last 2.5 years. She swings by the studio in the midst of her CDT thru-hike to share her journey of coming out as trans, how that's interfaced with her many thru-hiking miles, establishing the FKT on the Bay Circuit Trail, her love affair with the Hayduke, setting the women's White Mountains Direttissima FKT, her hikes on the AZT, Florida Trail, and much more. We wrap the show with some tips on scoring a walk-up permit at some of the most high-demand backcountry destinations, how we'd waste our money if we were billionaires, a very old guy centric stupid thing of the week, and the triple crown of failed candle scents. A single footstep becomes two. A single mile becomes thousands. A single trail becomes many. A single goal becomes a life. A life becomes a home. Welcome back to the Off Trail Podcast after our hiatus, here is the reason why! Well... that and also we neglected our duties off being a podcast host, but let us focus on the positives and not the negatives here. Strap in for a wild episode, the first of its kind. A pure hour of Constantine rambles, blessed be the souls willing to undertake this journey. We chat trails being a life changing experience but the true power on taking the lessons off the trails. We talk from the heart and let the brain catch up to the words. We chat everything about the book Life in Pursuit. A project 2 years in the making, and one could even say 7 years from that very first step on the Appalachian Trail. We chat finding time in life to pursue your passions, the constant year of travel in 2022, and when the brain gets involved things becoming lost. We discuss the difficulties of compressing life into 288 pages and how we tend to speak "well" with a heavy emphasis on the quotations. We chat the desire to share this story and the reasons behind writing a book and get lost in tangents. We then go into what we call "the in-between" the very foundation of our book. Each trail has its own chapter but does not jump directly into the next one, instead showing the building blocks of life and choice to continue pursuing adventure along the trails. We chat failure daily, prevalence of popularity of the trail systems in the recent years, and the immense circles of life both physically on trail and metaphorically along the way. We then begin the reading of the book. Starting with the dedication, the preface, and then a few snippets of chapters. Stories told in a scraggily voice (completely on par with our announcements being at the worst timing) and stories that give a glimpse into a life in pursuit. We chat "I Am A Barbie Girl", old timer gospel, and the endless definition of the word nothingness. We ramble, get lost, and one could hope remain found. The Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, the Pacific Northwest Trail, the Ice Age Trail, the Arizona Trail, the Florida Trail, the Natchez Trace Trail, the Potomac Heritage Trail, the New England Trail, and the behemoth of them all the North Country Trail make up the National Scenic Trails. Life in Pursuit becomes less about the physical activity of hiking and becomes a look into a life of obsession. The trials and obstacles of a life lived for the pursuit of the next trail. Stories, moments, and challenges of each hike are told through the lens of a perception that changes into a reality. The trail has an end point, the mind does not. When the trail ends the person continues to change. A trail is the physical manifestation of a journey. This book is the emotional manifestation of the endless journey of life, the endless journey of a life in pursuit. To everyone that continues to make this life special, thank you! In this episode, Courtney talks with Brittany “Puddin” McDonald. They talk about finding yourself in Nature, the amazing support in the hiking community, the hiking addiction and they answer the question: Why did you hike over 4000 miles? About Puddin: I started hiking the Appalachian Trail for self healing purposes after only completing one backpacking trip. When I reached Katahdin I continued on to the Canadian border. I then traveled to Alabama where I completed the Pinhoti Trail and connected my footsteps to Springer Mountain using the Benton Mckaye Trail. I then went back to the southern terminus of the Pinhoti and started walking south through the Alabama Roadwalk straight into the Florida Trail to Key west florida. Ending my first thru hike of 4400 miles. In this episode, Courtney talks with Maren “Wizard” Wahle. They talk about the challenges of hiking in the sun, whether social media documentation is a great idea and they answer the question: What is it like to hike internationally? About Maren: My name is Maren, I'm 28 years old, and I was born and raised in Germany. My parents emigrated to Michigan about 9 years ago; I made the move to join them full-time in February 2021, after finishing my Bachelor's degree in English and German philology at the University of Stuttgart. Since I didn't quite know what to do with myself yet when I got here, I figured it would be an excellent time to go live in the woods for a while. So, in April 2021, I headed down to Georgia to start my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. I summited Mount Katahdin on October 2nd - and knew immediately that I wanted to get back out there. I took a break from long distance trails in 2022 for several reasons, but in February 2023 I got the chance to join some friends from the AT on the Florida Trail - what was supposed to be a little 2 week section hike turned into a 740-mile-5-week adventure. Now I'm back in Michigan and making final preparations to head out for my PCT thru-hike attempt in a few weeks! (And then I guess back to Florida next January to finish up the Florida Trail...?) Dusty Hardman was born and raised in New Jersey and lived in Boulder, CO and Victor, ID. She started running in Teton Valley, ID around 2007. Inspired by an interview with Lisa Smith-Batchen in Running Magazine Dusty started running. Starting with a marathon and within two years tackling the Bear 100 in Utah. Having health issues, it took Dusty a while to dial in her training, medications, and overall health. It didn't take Dusty long to start tackling amazing adventures such as the Barkley Marathons, Badwater 146, Vol State and running across Florida from Coco Beach to Withlacoochie Bay on the Florida Trail. Dusty is one of only a handful of people to complete Badwater 146 and only the second woman. Dusty is inspired by all the amazing ultra-runners she has met and feels honored to toe the line, hang out with or even have so much in common with all of them.  Dusty is one of those amazing unassuming athletes that you probably have never heard of. She has been setting big goals and having incredible adventures for a long time. On this episode we talk about what led Dusty to three Barkley Marathon attempts and the Badwater 146. Dusty also shares some great stories about meeting her ultra-running role models along the way.  We discuss health struggles and how that has affected her training and mindset.
