What links certain mathematical models of traffic flow, shallow-water waves, and quantum particle scattering? The surprising answer lies in a corner of the algebraic combinatorics world that goes by the name of positive Grassmannian. In simple terms, the positive Grassmannian is a shape that classifies other shapes. Remarkably, pieces of the positive Grassmannian can be reassembled in forms that reveal shared structures in these and many other seemingly unrelated mathematical systems. That we know the positive Grassmannian crops up in many real-world settings is largely down to the theoretical work of Lauren Williams at Harvard University. In this latest episode of The Joy of Why, Williams talks to co-host Steven Strogatz about her work, how she realized the surprising pervasiveness of the positive Grassmannian, and how she has made a career of finding connections among fields that don't at first sight seem connected. The conversation then switches to another project Williams is working on, called First Proof, which is trying to measure objectively how good AI systems are at coming up with proofs of research-level mathematical statements, and which leads to an exploration of whether AI may or may not take over mathematics. Note: Since this conversation was recorded, results from the First Proof, Second Batch project were released on June 10 2026.
Relativity is a Sponsor of Litigation Radio. On this episode, we will hear from Cristin Traylor, Senior Director of AI transformation & law firm strategy at Relativity. The selection of Relativity as the subject of this interview should not be construed as an endorsement by the American Bar Association of Relativity and its services. Generative AI technology is transforming the world of legal e-discovery from start to finish, and it's advancing by the day. Guest Cristin Traylor is an attorney and the senior director of AI transformation & law firm strategy at Relativity, a leading legal data intelligence company. Where is AI taking the legal world, and how is it changing the way legal teams sift, manage, and use the electronic data delivered during discovery? Forget boxes of legal paperwork and records. Today, AI can organize and analyze terabytes of digital information. But understanding the technology and its pitfalls—and knowing how to train an AI model—is vital to getting results that matter to uncover the story told by the data. The use of AI in the electronic discovery process and the ability to dig into digital data dumps is not something any firm can afford to put off. This is today's legal environment and the future of discovery. What are you missing? What might opposing counsel understand that you don't? If you don't employ an AI tool, should you? If you have access to AI tools, do you know how to manage them, “train” them, and write effective prompts? You most likely didn't learn this in law school. You probably don't know what you don't know. Traylor offers a fascinating glimpse into the present and future of legal generative AI technology. You probably don't know what you don't know. In a timely episode, host Jim Reeder is joined by attorney, experienced poll worker, and current president of the ABA Michelle Behnke to discuss the American election system and the role of lawyers in that system. It might seem we're a long way from the notorious practice of voting from the cemetery, but are we? (Spoiler: we are). It seems like many Americans are becoming more skeptical about our current election system. And, as Behnke says, whenever there are humans in a process, there's always a chance for error. But today's technology and redundancies have made voting more secure than ever, even if allegations of cheating creep into the news cycle. Not only is she a business attorney, but Behnke has served as a poll worker and watched the system work as designed. Hear about Behnke's personal experience and how it built her confidence in the registration and voting process. So where do lawyers fit in? And how can you get involved and inspire confidence? Get out there as a poll watcher or even an election official. The system needs you. As Behnke bites, “As lawyers, we are made for serving in that role.” Also in this episode, quick tips from Lauren Williams as she discusses centering yourself. Over the past year, like no other time in recent memory, immigration law and enforcement has been in the spotlight. Guest William Menard is a longtime immigration attorney and a managing partner at the California immigration law firm Root Law Group. He's also the host of the immigration-focused podcast “The American Immigrant.” Asylum and deportation cases may get the headlines, but the field of immigration law is broad, including the impact on families, employment, and the needs of American businesses. And the added twist is that while attorneys handle these cases and study the laws, often the earliest hearings are held before a non-lawyer, saddling attorneys with an extra emphasis on clear communication. The Immigration and Nationality Act provides a lot of freedom to administrators making immigration-related decisions, and policies can vary from federal administration to administration, granting the U.S. Attorney General wide latitude. Attorneys litigating immigration cases are constantly challenged to keep up with the latest policies. Often, the old rules don't apply. Hear how an immigration attorney is navigating shifting policies and working to serve clients. As Menard says, “We've got to work harder.” Plus, a quick tip from corporate attorney Lauren Williams on “keeping your poker face” in court. “Your face is an important part of your advocacy because everyone is watching it … Stay composed.” Have a question, comment, or suggestion for an upcoming episode? In this episode, Lauren Williams, professor of mathematics at Harvard University and a 2025 MacArthur Fellow, speaks about the surprising and often messy reality of mathematical research. The conversation begins with a turbulent moment in academia, when federal grants supporting her work were suddenly canceled—only months before she received the MacArthur “Genius Grant,” an unexpected recognition that allowed her to continue her research. Williams explains her work in algebraic combinatorics, illustrating how abstract mathematics can connect to real-world systems. The discussion also explores the human side of discovery, from collaborations that span continents to the strange coincidence of research papers and babies arriving the same week. Finally, the episode dives into one of the most intriguing experiments in modern mathematics: the First Proof project, which tests whether artificial intelligence can produce genuine mathematical proofs, revealing both the promise and the current limitations of AI-generated reasoning.Chapters01:27 Winning the MacArthur Genius Grant01:43 Becoming a Woman in Mathematics at Harvard04:25 Research Applications10:04 The Human Side of Research12:20 The First Proof Project18:29 Advice for Young Mathematicians22:51 The Intersection of Mathematics and AIFollow Lauren Williams on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/laurenkwilliams42/ )Website (https://people.math.harvard.edu/~williams/)Follow Breaking Math on Substack (https://breakingmath.substack.com/) Twitter (https://x.com/breakingmathpod) Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/breakingmathmedia/) Bluesky (https://bsky.app/profile/breakingmath.bsky.social) Website (https://www.breakingmath.io/) YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/@BreakingMathPod) Follow Noah on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/profnoahgian/) Twitter (https://x.com/ProfNoahGian) Bluesky (https://bsky.app/profile/profnoahgian.bsky.social) Follow Autumn on Twitter (https://x.com/1autumn_leaf) Bluesky (https://bsky.app/profile/1autumnleaf.bsky.social) Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/1autumnleaf/) email: breakingmathpodcast@gmail.com
In this episode guests (and experts on experts) Deena Pack and Seth Row share practical tips for successfully hiring and managing an expert for your case. Hear it from the pros. It seems like every trial today needs an expert. And the experts you choose to learn from and present can make or break your case. Experts can be some of the most expensive elements of a case. You can't afford to make a mistake. When it comes to hiring an expert, the rule of thumb is “the earlier the better.” You may not even know if you have a case until you have an expert review of the evidence. But where do you find an expert? One who is not only current and knowledgeable, but also relatable to a judge and jury? Sometimes, even the perception as an “outsider” or a “local” expert matters. How do you make the right choice, vet prior testimony, and review qualifications? And don't forget the limits of your client's budget. Plus, a quick tip from Lauren Williams on how to polish your professional reputation by building rapport with courtroom staff. Have a question, comment, or suggestion for an upcoming episode? Pressure points on defense companies from their Pentagon customer to invest more and do business differently than before are coming from multiple levels of leadership, including President Trump himself.Lauren Williams, business editor at our partner publication Defense One, canvasses the perspectives and opinions of industry pros on that matter to help put together the Defense Business Brief newsletter that goes out every Monday.Lauren joins our Ross Wilkers for this episode to break down those different pressure points, including Trump's executive order barring companies from stock repurchases and issuing dividends until they invest more in tech development and production. But as Lauren also explains, that executive order is only one of several examples of the U.S. military customer taking a more direct involvement in shaping the kind of industrial base it wants.WT 360: Defense One's Lauren Williams on the new world order of acquisitionDOE seeks batteries with four times the juiceDefense Business Brief: Thales' frigate pivot + 2026 lookahead with Leonardo DRSDefense Business Brief: Exec order fallout; $1B rocket-maker deal; Acquisition changes, and moreTrump lambastes defense CEOs over pay, stock buybacksDefense Business Brief: US-made biotech; Rocketdyne; Hegseth's industry tours‘Very, very strange time': After a big 2025, what's next for the defense industry?Hegseth hints at higher defense budgets as OMB says another reconciliation bill is possibleUnveiling acquisition overhaul, Hegseth tells industry to get with the programWhy DOD is so bad at buying software

What if you're not out of time, you've just handed it to everything but yourself? In this solo episode, Lauren Williams challenges the belief that there's never enough time. This episode is your reminder to rest. When you unplug, spend time with God, and pour into what nourishes you, you'll realize you always had enough time, you just stopped protecting it. In this episode you'll hear about: unplugging from social media and online distractions, recognizing rest as something to do, the importance of presence, spending quiet and grounded time with God, noticing when escapism drains your energy, and leveraging time for creative projects that refill your cup. At the end of the episode, we reframe Lauren's limiting belief that “you don't have time” into something that supports her evolving, empowered reality. On this special episode of the Restorative Works! Podcast, host Claire de Mézerville López welcomes three leaders transforming school culture in Worcester County, Maryland: Dr. Jenifer Rayne, Principal of Pocomoke High School; Carlton Cartwright, Community School Liaison and Restorative Practices Coach; and Lauren Williams, Coordinator of School Health and Mental Health. Together, they share a decade-long journey of embedding restorative practices into daily school life—creating spaces where trust, connection, and accountability thrive. From early district-wide training sessions to the creation of “Restorative Practice Champions,” Worcester County Public Schools has built a living, evolving framework for fostering belonging. The team explains how conscious discipline, culturally responsive teaching, and adult-first self-regulation are equipping both educators and students with the skills to repair harm, navigate conflict, and sustain healthy relationships. Jenifer Rayne is entering her eighth year as Principal of Pocomoke High School in Worcester County, Maryland. A dedicated and visionary educator, Dr. Rayne has led this small, diverse high school to national recognition, earning distinctions such as National School of Character, Gold School of Opportunity, and Apple Distinguished School under her leadership. Dr. Rayne holds a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Stevenson University, a K–12 Special Education certification from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, a master's degree in School Administration from Wilmington University, and a Doctor of Education in Supervisory Leadership from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Carlton Cartwright is a restorative leader and educator with over 26 years of experience supporting student success, access, and belonging on Maryland's Eastern Shore. In his current role he leads initiatives that embed restorative practices frameworks into daily practice and strengthen school-community partnerships. Having received training from the IIRP, Carlton facilitates professional learning and student support systems across Worcester County Public Schools. He believes transformation happens when we lead with rather than to others—building trust, connection, and shared responsibility. His leadership extends beyond the classroom through service in his church, mentoring, and community engagement. Lauren Williams is a seasoned educational leader and licensed clinical social worker with over 15 years of experience advancing student mental health, family engagement, and restorative practices. As the Coordinator of School Health and Mental Health for Worcester County Public Schools, she leads district-wide initiatives that prioritize student well-being, inclusive leadership, and trauma-informed care. Her leadership philosophy is rooted in principle-centered values, collaboration, and the belief that lasting change happens with people, not to them. Currently pursuing her doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Lauren is a driving force behind restorative implementation, behavior reform, adult-first self-regulation practices, and community school transformation in Worcester County. Tune in to hear practical strategies—like revising the district's code of conduct to reflect community-building values, integrating goals aligned with restorative practices into school improvement plans, and partnering with law enforcement for shared training.

In this episode, our new producer, Lauren Williams, revisits an old genre through a new lens. Classical music, a historically exclusionary space, is going through changes. We explore the process of writing and performing boundary-pushing classical music with Seth Parker Woods, a Grammy-nominated cello player who pulls from the sounds and stories of the Black diaspora to write otherworldly compositions, and Curtis Stewart, a Grammy-nominated Violinist who experiments with beats and electronics in his virtuosic arrangements. We get a taste of how far the genre has come — and how far it has to go — from Afa Dworkin, a violinist and the creative director of The Sphinx Organization, which supports emerging composers of color. To wrap up the episode, we hear from Abel Selaocoe, a classical cellist from South Africa who has gifted the genre something new to play by tapping into ancestral memory. PA 030
Respair is kicking off the year by sharing a new project that we're proud to partner with and share with you! Welcome to Carceral Fictions & Abolitionist Realities, a series of narrative essays that reflect on emergent themes from conversations with Detroit-based organizers and futurists committed to abolition of police and prisons. Interweaving research with brief dispatches from speculative abolitionist futures, each episode draws together the voices of people working toward food justice, water access, educational equity, restorative justice, and Black liberation to connect thematic currents surrounding the abolition of police and prisons. In each episode, we look closely at the kinds of fictions that shape our current attachments to policing, prisons, and punishment to examine where they come from and how they affect us. At the same time, you'll hear us explore abolitionist realities that counter these fictions and open up other ways of being. The series is presented in partnership with Making Room for Abolition, a body of work that imagines a world without police and prisons by making speculative worlds through the lens of a home. It was dreamed up, written and produced by Lauren Williams; essays were co-produced by Ayinde Jean-Baptiste; and the audio was engineered by Conor Anderson. Featured guests include Nick Buckingham, Curtis Renee, Tawana Petty, PG Watkins, Angel McKissic, Monica Lewis-Patrick, Nate Mullen, Sirrita Darby, Kim Sherrobi, Monique Thompson, and Myrtle Thompson-Curtis. Voice actors who read various excerpts from references are credited on each episode. Our theme music is the instrumentals from a song called Detroit Summer by Invincible and Waajeed, courtesy of Emergence Media. Full time-stamped transcripts are available at www.makingroom.online/essays. This show is presented in partnership with Respair Production & Media.
