Today we wanted to take a moment to honor a friend and mentor of TNT Strength: Mr. Gary Bannister. For the first time ever Truth Not Trends is re-releasing an early episode to honor the passing of our friend, Gary Bannister. Gary has written some of our favorite books (some of which are required reading for our TNT Strength coaches). One of my all time favorites of is:…”What They Won't Tell You. GOLF Performance Training“. A longtime golfer, Bannister played with some of the world's greatest champions. He established and coached the men's and women's varsity golf teams at Averett College, and opened South America's first Nautilus gym, which led him to prepare Venezuela's male and female golf teams for the World Team Amateur Championship in 1986. We were very fortunate to have Gary as an early guest on our Truth Not Trends Podcast way back in episode #18. Gary was smart funny and a pleasure to speak with about all things Arthur Jones and Brief Intense Effective Strength Training. He will be missed… Gary F. Bannister, age 74, of Tequesta, Florida passed away on Friday, August 12, 2022. Gary was born February 26, 1948.
Tomorrow Is The Problem PodcastWelcome to the ICA Miami Podcast. Each season, we'll explore familiar concepts from everyday life that we often take for granted. We'll expand these concepts to understand their critical historical and cultural underpinnings and forever change the way you view them.Oceanic Ways of KnowingThe focus of this first season is the ocean as a source of knowledge. Understanding identity and history inevitably requires a study of the seas, the communities it affects, and the secrets it was made to hold in the deep.Rising TidesFrom Miami's Tequesta to Hawaii's Kanaka Maoli, indigenous peoples everywhere are living memory of what the water has already taught us.Today's guests discuss the effects of handing stewardship back to native peoples to stem the tides of climate change.Timestamps + Takeaways[0:00] The Oahu Water Protectors versus the U.S. Navy, an exercise in indigenous rights and demands.[3:37] Land stewardship in Hawai'i is an issue best tackled by Kanaka Maoli whose methods of systematic observation resemble science but without the drastic excision of spirituality. Candace Fujikane shares some of the 4000 deities that describe natural and elemental processes.[7:09] Candace speaks to the importance of indigenous knowledge and methods — Hawaiian and otherwise — for combating climate change through restoration.[15:11] ICA Miami sits on Tequesta land, an extinct people whose stewardship duties have been transferred to the Miccosukee tribe.[17:41] Dina Gilio-Whitaker explains the significance, for the Colville Confederated Tribes, of the now flooded Kettle Falls along the Columbia river as well as the fracture and cultural wound the damming created.[21:53] Mending her connection to water by way of surfing, Dina embraced humility. She speaks about her work correcting false narratives and reclaiming surfing as a spiritual practice.[25:44] Climate change is a philosophical problem brought about by a commodified relationship to the land, and incidentally to water which can be directly countered with indigenous principles, knowledge, and practices.[31:22] Season 1 of Tomorrow Is The Problem podcast closes with a quiet reminder to reconnect the middle passage with the Afro-Futures seas of Drexciya, the healing waters of Hawaii, and the indigenous knowledge we all need to sail forward through unknown waters.Tune in for season 2.Contributors + GuestsDonna Honarpisheh / Assistant Curator and Host.Candace Fujikane / Professor and Activist.Dina Gilio-Whitaker / Journalist, Author, and Activist. This podcast was made in partnership with Podfly Productions. On a warm August night in Tequesta, Florida, Michelle and John Stevens were sitting in their garage drinking a beer when 19-year-old Austin Harrouff viscously attacked them in a crazed frenzy. A neighbor tried to intervene but was repeatedly stabbed and fled the scene to call 911. When first responders arrived on the scene, Austin was grunting and growling while ripping off the flesh from John's face with his teeth. In college, we all have one primary goal--get that degree. Yet, the importance of forming meaningful connections often goes unnoticed. And it's not because you skipped a couple of lectures, it's just that networking doesn't fit into the organic-chemistry syllabus or world history discussions. Experts agree that the most connected people are often the most prosperous. When you invest in your relationships, both professional and personal, you can expect dividends throughout your career. Moreover, it's not uncommon to find the least qualified people landing the job during an interview. Sometimes it's not always about what you know but who you know. So, take the time to build meaningful relationships with those in your professional circle. When the time comes to search for work or new business, you can tap into those valuable connections for referrals, insights into job leads, and other helpful information. Maria Tritico was a jewelry artist, art therapist, and art educator here in Palm Beach County where I live. I’m replaying my episode with her from October, 2018 with a new introduction. Last week, Maria died when she was hit by stray gunfire while she was sitting on the beach. She was a friend of mine, as she was to just about everyone in the Palm Beach County art community. Maria had just turned 32, had just closed on a house with her fiancé, and had plans to get married this December 31st. I would like my listeners to know that there was an amazing, beautiful, and talented artist named Maria Tritico. She was loved, and she spread her love to so many groups of people that she worked with. In this interview, we talk about her jewelry making and how her style has developed over the years. We also talk about her art therapy degree and how she was starting an art therapy program at the Lighthouse Art Center in Tequesta, Florida. When we talked, Maria was teaching jewelry classes at the Lighthouse. Since then, she became the Director of Education. The staff of the Lighthouse Art Center are like one big family, and losing Maria is a big loss for them. But it’s also a loss for our local art community, as well as the groups Maria helped with her art therapy. If you’d like to contribute to the Maria Tritico Memorial Fund, I have a link in the Show Notes for this Episode 193. Show notes for all of these episodes can be found on my website at https://suzanneredmond.com/my-podcast/list-of-artists/

In this episode of Fresh Art’s Fall 2020 Student Edition, University of Miami students Diana Borras and Kurt Gessler discover sacred land hiding in plain sight at the heart of Miami’s business district. Carib Tribal Queen Catherine Hummingbird Ramirez has come to meet them at the sacred Native American site known as the Miami Circle. Ramirez has come to share her concerns about the ongoing impact of urban development. The Miami Circle: In 1998, an archaeological investigation at the mouth of the Miami River uncovered evidence of a 2,000 year-old Native American site on land once occupied by the Brickell Point Apartments. Now known as the Miami Circle, the Tequesta site consists of a circle over 35 feet in diameter with about 20 basins and hundreds of smaller postholes. Many consider the Miami Circle a North American “Stonehenge.” Producers: Diana Borras and Kurt Gessler/Miami Moves Me, Jahné King/FreshArtINTL Sound Editor: Anamnesis Audio Related Episodes: Miami Moves Me/Miami Circle, Fresh Art Student Edition, Fresh Voices Miami, Culture Making in Downtown Miami Related Links: Miami Moves Me Podcast, Tequesta Artifacts, Miami Circle, Fresh Art Distance Learning Guide

This month we have a very special Holiday edition of the Jupiter Farms Residents Podcast… well sort of. If you’re looking to give the gift of environmental friendliness, litter activism and reusable gift ideas then you’re in the right place. We’re very fortunate to have as guests this month Kathy Moore of Talking Trash and Elana Smith and Stephen Smith of One World – Zero Waste in Tequesta. You can find more https://www.oneworld-zerowaste.com or visit their store located at:One World Zero Waste354 S. To get involved and get community service hours call 561-523-755000:34 – We’re looking at polar opposites of trash in the Farms this month. Removing trash in the Farms with Kathy Moore and Talking Trash, which goes out there each month picking up trash around town and preventing trash from being created talking to Stephen and Elana of the retail store, One World – Zero Waste. 01:24 – Stephen & Elana explain what One World – Zero Waste is all about – providing the community with alternative products to stop using single use plastic products that create so many problems in our environment (and end up getting picked up by Kathy). Items like reusable un-paper towels, and cloth diapers are some popular items in the store. 08:45 – Kathy Moore cleans up the plastic and trash thrown out on the roads in Jupiter Farms. Where is this trash coming from? Is the problem getting worse? And thanks to Kathy’s sponsors she offers great prizes and rewards to the kids and adults taking part in her monthly clean-ups. And boy do they find some crazy things when doing the clean-ups. And for kids needing community service hours it’s a great way to get those accomplished as well. 17:23 – Elana and Stephen have attempted to live their lives at zero waste – here are some of the hardest things to give up. For instance, they don’t have a garbage can in their house – how do they survive?!? You don’t have to go zero waste – just start with a few things and see how much less you can waste.20:02 – We can all get a few bags and use them when shopping at the super market. 22:28 – Can we go towards zero waste because it’s the right thing to do or do we need government intervention? 25:07 – Going zero-waste ends up saving you potentially hundreds of dollars annually. 30:02 – COMMUNITY CALENDAR: NO JFR Meeting in December, Sat. Dec. 7th JFR Christmas Tree sale goes on at 9am, Dec. 15th Jupiter Farms Christmas Parade at 1pm with craft fair, Dec. 19th SIRWCD Board Meeting at 7pm in the pavilion, watch out for JF Shootout tickets going on sale (we’re also looking for more sponsors for this amazing event).Support the show (http://www.jupiterfarmsresidents.com/donate-to-jfr/)

The Jupiter-Tequesta Repeater Group, consisting of Ham radio operators, holds its annual Field Day at Carlin Park's Civic Center on Saturday, June 22, 2019.
August 15, 2016 - A Tequesta, FL couple sat watching TV in their garage on a hot summer night like any other. It was a normal routine for them, one they tended to repeat every evening, taking advantage of a cool nighttime breeze and conversation with neighbors. But little did they know this night would be their last. Within moments, the couple was attacked by a strange young man who suddenly entered their garage looking confused and on the verge of violence. Within minutes, two people would be dead, another would suffer serious stab wounds, and the perpetrator would be feeding on someone's face as the police tried everything they could to stop him. In the end, we're left with but one question: why? Join host Ryan Kraus for a psychological deconstruction of American middle-class values to unearth the seed from which these alarming incidents grow.
The Miami River is the serpentine tributary that separates downtown Miami from today’s Brickell neighborhood. The history of the area has centered around this waterway as the regions earliest inhabitants found refuge, food and security along the banks of the river. Juan Ponce De Leon named the indigenous people found along the river as “Tequesta” during a voyage on Biscayne Bay in 1513. The river was also the location of several Spanish missions, a military fort, a blockade by the navy during the Civil War and a trading post run by the Brickell family along the south bank. The rapids located near the south fork of the river became a processing plant for Miami’s early cash crop: coontie. In this episode of Living Legends, presented by the Nufarm Insider, host John Reitman chats with Steve Ehrbar, superintendent at Jupiter Hills Club in Tequesta, FL, about his career path from deep Ohio roots to several locations around southern Florida, and working for Jim Loke and Jack Nicklaus.
Funneled into Florida by the crush of colonialism, a whole new population arrives in South Florida, bringing trouble to the Tequesta's doorstep. The final cataclysm follows close behind.
While more than a century passes for the Tequesta in relative isolation, powerful forces swirl on the horizon in every direction. A storm is closing in on Biscayne Bay.
The Three Souls tells the story of South Florida's first people, from the earliest ice-age hunters to step foot on the desolate oolite ridge, to the eventual rise of the great Calusa and Tequesta peoples, whose indelible marks remain etched into the very bedrock of Miami.
(9-27-2017) Today’s Topical Currents ponders a South Florida which existed long before documented settlers arrived at what’s now a Megalopolis. We visit with FSU Professor Andrew Frank and discuss his book, BEFORE THE PIONEERS: Indians, Settlers, Slaves and the Founding of Miami . Obviously, the ancients were on to something: the largest Tequesta village at the Miami River mouth, was also the focal point of what became a great city.
