A bench trial, a civil suit, and two defenses.   On June 20th, 2018 Heather Barron called 911 to report that her 10-year-old was unresponsive and not breathing.  Heather Barron and her boyfriend Kareem Leiva were both charged with murder.  Many felt Los Ángeles Department of Children and Family Services also had responsibility for the multiple failures that led to Anthony's death. As Anthony's case made it through the courts another child, 4-year-old Noah Cuatro, died while his family was under the supervision of Los Ángeles DCFS. A letter, repeated calls to DCFS, and gang ties. On June 20th, 2018 Heather Barron called 911 to report that her 10-year-old was unresponsive and not breathing.  She gave multiple accounts of what happened that day and how her son had been injured but not one of her stories explained the severity of Anthony's injuries. Allie Taylor Rios is the third generation  in a musical family. The grand daughter of professional musicians, Allie followed in their footsteps and chose to pursue a career in music. Allie’s music journey started in elementary school when she did percussion in her schools orchestra in 2nd grade. That lead to a further interest in trumpet and choir in 5th grade. Allie gives credit to her Elementary school music teacher, and later on colleague, Lisa Pimentel for giving her the confidence early on to follow her dreams in music. Allie is now the Co-founder of the music school AMPED (Academy of Music Performance and Education) in Lancaster CA, and is their head vocal teacher. She is a songwriter and multi instrumentalist, and teaches songwriting, vocal performance, guitar, piano, bass, ukulele, trumpet, and drums. One of her favorite and “most rewarding” things she has done in her life is being able to write songs with her students. It gives her students an honest platform to express their true feeling that they might not have the option to in their day to day lives. When Allie is not doing music, you will find her behind the camera running her photography business, Cherished Moments Photography.

Yet simultaneously we live in a world divided by religious difference. To our surprise, the light of God shines upon us from the other, as God is made manifest through a diversity of mediums. This sermon series situates us as attentive listeners to other religious traditions. After declaring the light of God upon all people and laying a theological framework for particularity amidst plurality, we will train our attention on three particular sacred stories—Buddhism, Islam, and Judaism. Each sacred story will be expressed by a religious leader who will speak to us out of their own tradition while making connections to values we at Pearl hold dear—gratitude, inclusion, integration, peace, renewal, and transformation. Our hope for this series is to encourage understanding, empathy, appreciation, and connection to our religious neighbors who, alongside us, seek out the light of the Divine. This week’s guest speaker is Imam Mohamad Jamal Daoudi. Imam Jamal was born in Damascus, Syria. He graduated from Damascus University in 1988 with BA in English Literature, continued his Islamic education at The Islamic Call College/Damascus and graduated with BA Shari’ah / Islamic Sciences and Arabic Language in 1991. He came to the US in 1995 and started his first position as Imam at The Islamic Center of North Valley, Lancaster-CA. He earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary. Imam Daoudi is specialized in the areas of Quranic interpretation “Tafsir”, Hadith, counseling and interfaith dialogues and activities. He works with the Trifaith Initiative. One is all about the whacky, the culinary, the mad while the other is more traditional with classic beer style approaches.
