In this special Episode, my 100th, I reflect back on to the Camarena case and look forward to efforts to clear the record of false narratives and blatant misrepresentations about the case. Specifically, in this Episode, I discuss some of the reasons why the Camarena case is highly personal to me. I also reflect on the need to resolve some unanswered issues surrounding the case in order to honor the legacy of Agent Camarena and to respect the legacy of those who worked with Agent Camarena, those who searched for him, and those who sought to bring his killers to justice. I then consider the false narratives around the case, including those presented by the government in the prosecution of Ruben Zuno Arce and others. Finally, I reflect on the false and malicious claims made by Agent Berrellez and his so-called witnesses in The Last Narc and elsewhere.

We continue our examination of the transcripts from the Zuno I and Zuno II trials by considering the testimonies of traffickers Enrique Plascencia Aguilar and Frank Retamoza. Plascencia's testimony includes details about the events at La Longosta that may be seen as inconsistent with the accepted narrative.  In addition, his testimony regarding a December 1984 meeting is also inconsistent not only with other witnesses at both trials, but also directly at odds with allegations and claims in The Last Narc. In the case of Frank Retamoza, the government gave him broad immunity and paid him and his family more than $900,000, despite his admission to multiple acts in aid of the traffickers, including taking $150 million from the U.S. to Felix Gallardo in Mexico.  Curiously, the government made this arrangement despite the fact the Retamoza offered no direct testimony against either defendant on trial in Zuno II.

Sheriff David Hathaway is a fifth-generation rancher from the U.S.-Mexico border in Santa Cruz County, Arizona. He's also a former supervisory agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration, and he participated in the DEA's largest-ever homicide investigation, Operación Leyenda, to track down the killers of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena in the 1980s. Hathaway's participation in Camarena's murder investigation, and his discovery that the CIA was not only smuggling drugs but also involved in Camarena's death in Mexico, led Hathaway to conclude that America's war on drugs is a failure, which spurs government corruption on both sides of the border as illustrated (yet again) in the current trial of former Mexican anti-drug official Genaro Garcia Luna in New York. Hathaway speaks frankly about U.S. drug policy, the investigation into Camarena's death (which is now featured in a four-part documentary called The Last Narc on Amazon), and the restorative justice programs* that Santa Cruz County has spearheaded to reduce drug demand in its communities. *Constructing Circles of Peace, Hope Incorporated, Wellness Connections, and Mariposa Community Health Center. Many of the witnesses presented at the Camarena-related criminal trials were brought to the U.S. by Antonio Garate Bustamonte, a former Mexican police officer and indicted drug trafficker.  Each of the three witnesses relied upon in The Last Narc were also "suppled" by Garate.  Unbelievably, though, Hector Berrellez admits that the DEA didn't trust Garate and that he was not credible enough to testify at any of the criminal trials.  Garate's lack of credibility irreversibly infected not only the criminal trials but also the allegations from Berrellez and The Last Narc.
