Give to help Chris make Truce. The Iran-Contra Affair was a major political scandal in the United States during the second term of President Ronald Reagan in the mid-1980s. At its core, the affair involved the secret sale of arms to Iran—despite an arms embargo—in the hopes of securing the release of American hostages held by Hezbollah in Lebanon. These sales were initiated covertly by members of the U.S. government, who believed they could foster better relations with moderate elements in Iran while also achieving humanitarian aims. The operation violated official U.S. policy and Congressional restrictions, particularly the Boland Amendment, which explicitly prohibited aid to the Contra rebels in Nicaragua. The second part of the scandal involved diverting profits from the Iranian arms sales to fund the Contras, a right-wing rebel group fighting the leftist Sandinista government in Nicaragua. The Reagan administration had viewed the Contras as essential to stopping the spread of communism in Central America. However, Congress had explicitly forbidden further military aid to the Contras, making the diversion of funds both illegal and secretive. Key figures in the affair included Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North of the National Security Council, who helped coordinate the operation, as well as senior officials like National Security Advisor John Poindexter. When the operation was exposed in 1986, it triggered a political firestorm and led to multiple investigations by Congress and an independent counsel. While President Reagan claimed he had no knowledge of the diversion of funds, the scandal significantly damaged his administration's credibility. Several officials were convicted of crimes related to the affair, though many were later pardoned by President George H. W. Bush. The Iran-Contra Affair remains a powerful example of executive overreach and the risks of conducting foreign policy outside the bounds of democratic oversight. Drawing on his new book Inside the Reagan White House: A Front-Row Seat to Presidential Leadership with Lessons for Today, Lavin includes a mix of personal stories, insights on the president, discussions of policy and historical events, and crazy, colorful anecdotes in his insider's look at the Reagan presidency. CINEMATIC VIOLENCE WILL BE CELEBRATED IN A WAY THAT MAY DISTURB SOME LISTENERS.   TGTPTU enters its final pairing of Squib Games (Season 15) with the 1850s (and 1980s) invasion of Nicaragua with WALKER (1987), a film by Alex Cox.   Beset with difficulties filming, beloved by many a cineast, bewildering to divers critics of its day, Walker tells the story of the titular William Walker, a filibuster (also known as a “freebooter”) who prior to the American Civil War took private troops to Nicaragua and toppled its aristocratic government under the principles of Americanism and Manifest Destiny before setting himself up as dictator. Written by Rudy Wurlitzer whose novel Nog got comparisons to and favorable praise from podfav scribbler Thomas Pynchon, the movie's plot follows the structure of a biopic only to undercut its titular antihero's self-(righteous/delusion/destructive ß strike as appropriate) bravado and speechifying with montages both of actual conditions caused by his actions and of anachronisms culminating in a helicopter airlift—a direct reference to the American intervention supporting the Contras—as the acid western melts guest host Jack's mind.   What is arguably Alex Cox's final feature film (although IMDB will credit him with allegedly ten or eleven films made afterwards), Walker (the film) was a triumph of determination and workarounds. The director and lead actor Ed Harris (not to be confused with next week's film lead Peter Weller) took pay cuts and invested their own money into the passion project when political interference arose. Despite Cox possibly believing his Rated R anarchistic movie would be a hit with wide audience appeal, the movie was dumped in early December against populist cinema hits of that year with critics and audiences not a fan of a film about an unredeemable man like Walker (nor was at least one TGTPTU host).   Full of slow motion and juicy squibs, the Joe Strummer-scored film brings a punk rock sensibility pokes a finger in the eye of the historical biopic and leaves American nationalism blinking.    Now forgive us while we betray every principle we've ever had and those who supported us. Reagan's Pragmatic Cold War Victory, Don Regan's Disastrous Tenure, and the Iran-Contra Near-Death Experience. Max Boot discusses how Ronald Reagan had no patience for communism, and in his first term, his policy toward the Soviet Union was somewhat unsuccessful, though it improved in 1985 with the ascension of Mikhail Gorbachev. Reagan's genius was recognizing that Gorbachev was a different communist leader he could "do business with," and they established a rapport that allowed them to constructively reduce nuclear armaments and peacefully end the Cold War. The transition into Reagan's second term saw a catastrophic personnel decision when Reagan allowed Jim Baker and Don Regan to swap jobs. Regan lacked political instincts and presided over problems that culminated in the Iran-Contra scandal. Reagan was highly exercised by American hostages seized by Hezbollah, and National Security Advisor Bud McFarlane suggested shipping weapons to supposed Iranian moderates in exchange for hostage releases, which was a fiasco. The scandal intensified when McFarlane's successor, John Poindexter, and Oliver North diverted the profits from the weapon sales to fund the anti-communist Contras in Nicaragua. This incident could have led to impeachment, but Reagan's salvation was his reputation for being hands-off and disengaged. Reagan also faced criticism over a human rights double standard, speaking eloquently about violations behind the Iron Curtain but being less exercised about apartheid in South Africa.

Jeremy Kuzmarov - Warmonger - How Clinton's Malign Foreign Policy Launched the US Trajectory from Bush II to BidenNov 17, 2023During  the 2016 presidential election, many younger voters repudiated Hillary  Clinton because of her husband's support for mass incarceration, banking  deregulation and free-trade agreements that led many U.S. jobs to be  shipped overseas. Warmonger: How Clinton's Malign Foreign Policy Launched the Trajectory from Bush II to Biden,  shows that Clinton's foreign policy was just as bad as his domestic  policy. Cultivating an image as a former anti-Vietnam War activist to  win over the aging hippie set in his early years, as president, Clinton  bombed six countries and, by the end of his first term, had committed  U.S. troops to 25 separate military operations, compared to 17 in Ronald  Reagan's two terms. Clinton further expanded America's covert empire of  overseas surveillance outposts and spying and increased the budget for  intelligence spending and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a  CIA offshoot which promoted regime change in foreign nations.   The  latter was not surprising because, according to CIA operative Cord  Meyer Jr., Clinton had been recruited into the CIA while a Rhodes  Scholar at Oxford, and as Governor of Arkansas in the 1980s he had  allowed clandestine arms and drug flights to Nicaraguan  counter-revolutionaries (Contras) backed by the CIA to be taken from  Mena Airport in the western part of the state. Rather than being a time  of tranquility when the U.S. failed to pay attention to the gathering  storm of terrorism, as New York Times columnist David Brooks frames it,  the Clinton presidency saw rising tensions among the U.S., China and  Russia because of Clinton's malign foreign policies, and U.S. complicity  in terrorist acts.   In so many ways, Clinton's presidency set  the groundwork for the disasters that were to follow under Bush II,  Obama, Trump, and Biden. It was Clinton--building off of Reagan--who  first waged a War on Terror ridden with double standards, one that  adopted terror tactics, including extraordinary rendition, bombing and  the use of drones. It was Clinton who cried wolf about human rights  abuses and the need to protect beleaguered peoples from genocide to  justify military intervention in a post-Cold War age.
