Anytime I am mentoring, with a group of young people or students, I give them my number and ask them to use it. I encourage that. And its up to them. -- Gene Camarena, Founder/CEO La Raza Inc. Gene and his wife Yolanda have changed so many lives because they believe in education and they chose to be entrepreneurs They have validated their success by giving of their time, their talents and their treasures to young people. They give and they keep giving with one caveat, you must participate in their generosity. Gene knows how difficult it is to be an entrepreneur and it get started and that's one of the main reasons why he continues to be accessible and open and honest about that path. As an incredibly successful franchisees in restaurants and hotels, Gene will tell you directly that the most fun is sharing that success with the next generation to grow more opportunities for those in the Latino community and with any young person willing to take a risk and continue to take action. Gene's leadership is meaningful effective and never boastful. I thank him for what he has done and continues to do every day for the benefit of others.

In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Margarita Camarena. Margarita's relationship with money was shaped by two extremes. As a child, she fled Mexico City after the 1985 earthquake, lost her father that same year, and arrived in the U.S. with her family starting from zero. Years later, after earning two degrees from UC Davis, a lifestyle pivot collided with the 2008 financial crisis and led Margarita to bankruptcy. That decision forced her to face the shame and fear that can come with financial collapse, along with the freedom that can follow. With a mother who taught saving and structure and a father who believed life is meant to be enjoyed while you are healthy, Margarita's story is a powerful lesson in balance and in seeing money as an energy that needs to move. Xochitl Xiuh Ollin, also known as Margarita Camarena, is a Mayan Ajq'ij. She is also a craniosacral therapist, Reiki Master Teacher and manual therapist. She is Tenochca-Tlatelolca, born in Mexico City between the ancient twin cities of Tlatelolco and Tenochtitlan. As a child, she learned from her grandparents how to carry life in a holistic way through remedies and healing practices. Their approach to finances was conservative and rooted in respect, as money was understood to be a primary resource for security and for providing a “comfortable elderhood.” These practices were not labeled curanderismo; they were simply a way of life. As an Ajq'ij, Margarita's role is that of a spiritual guide, carrier of time and fire priestess. She conducts many types of fire ceremonies and works with the 20 sacred Mayan energies and the 13 frequencies of life to guide people. She embraces a multidisciplinary practice that includes craniosacral therapy, Indigenous healing arts, Reiki and multidimensional bodywork. She carries the medicines of sacred lineages from the Zapotec, Maya, Toltec and Mexica traditions. She serves communities in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area. She is also an educator and offers workshops nationwide and in Mexico, sharing teachings in Indigenous healing, bodywork, medicinal astrology, energy work and Reiki. It is her passion to connect people to nature and ancestral lineages through ceremonies in natural settings and through the cultivation of ritual. Her background is in Art and Design. She comes from a lineage of female curanderas and parteras (midwives), as well as male artists and muralists—traditions she has inherited and continues to practice. When Balance Shapes Longevity Margarita's story is a powerful reminder that money is never just about accumulation. It is about balance, resilience and the meaning we assign to our experiences. From rebuilding her life after loss and displacement to making the difficult decision to file for bankruptcy, she shows how moments often framed by fear or shame can become turning points for growth and renewal. By reframing money as an exchange of energy, Margarita invites us to consider how our financial choices intersect with health, purpose and the lives we hope to live over the long term. Her reflections on community, fear and legacy offer a more expansive view of longevity, not just in years lived, but in impact felt. If you're thinking about how to plan while navigating financial setbacks or major life transitions, an Aspiriant advisor can help you evaluate options, restore confidence and build a plan that aligns your resources with your values. Follow Money Tales on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or YouTube Music for more real stories that explore the human side of money and how thoughtful decisions today can shape resilience, renewal and the legacy we leave behind.
CRIMINAL MISCHIEF The Murder of Agent Camarena: The Cartel That Woke the Giant This week on Criminal Mischief, Carolyn takes listeners inside one of the most brutal and consequential crimes of the modern drug war — the kidnapping, torture, and murder of dedicated DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena Salazar, carried out at the behest of the Guadalajara Cartel in the mid-1980s. Camarena wasn't just another name on a case file. He was a husband, a father, and an agent who believed that justice mattered — even when the forces he was up against had infinite money, political influence, and a willingness to destroy anyone who stood in their way. But what cartel leaders didn't anticipate… was what would happen next. Because Camarena's murder didn't end with silence. It triggered something rare: a full-force response from the United States government — an investigation so vast and relentless it became one of the DEA's largest murder hunts in history, stretching across borders and years. What followed was not just law enforcement — it was pursuit. A slow, grinding campaign of pressure, intelligence, and endurance designed to make sure the people responsible could never fully disappear into the world they'd built. For this episode, Carolyn interviews a retired DEA agent who had a front row seat for more than 30 years of the so-called “war on drugs” — offering firsthand insight into how cartel power really functions, what justice looks like when it takes decades, and what it costs the men and women who spend their lives trying to hold the line. This one is heavy. It's infuriating. And it's essential listening. Content Warning This episode includes discussion of kidnapping, torture, and murder.

Remember, good bourbon equals good friends and good times. Drink responsibly and don't drink and drive. Live your life uncut and unfiltered.Bourbon innovation meets tequila tradition in our exploration of Booker's Reserve 2025 – a groundbreaking release that takes Booker's barrels on an international journey before creating something truly spectacular. This unique expression began with Booker's 30th Anniversary barrels that traveled to Jalisco, Mexico, where the Camarena family used them to age El Tesoro tequila. When those same barrels returned to Kentucky, they carried rich agave notes that would transform a special batch of Booker's bourbon during a 2-3 month finishing period. The result? A first-ever finished Booker's that bridges Kentucky tradition with Mexican craftsmanship. Our tasting reveals a masterful balance of bourbon character and tequila influence. At 123.3 proof, this 8-year, 10-month bourbon delivers waves of caramel, vanilla, and baking spices complemented by subtle agave brightness. What's most remarkable is how approachable it remains despite its strength – the perfect fireside companion for winter evenings. The distinctive brown wax seal (rather than traditional black) visually connects this innovative expression to early Booker's releases.Freddie Noe has established the Reserve series as his playground while honoring his grandfather's experimental spirit. As Freddie notes, Booker "was never not exploring" and would eagerly share his tinkering with friends and family. This philosophy lives on in a bourbon that scored an impressive 17.5/18 on our rating scale, making it a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts alike.Whether you're a longtime Booker's fan or exploring premium bourbon for the first time, this release demonstrates how thoughtful barrel finishing can add fascinating dimensions to an already exceptional whiskey. In this Episode, I look at the recent disclosure of President Trump's directive to the Pentagon to begin using military force against certain Latin American cartels and what it might mean for Mexico and Venezuela. I then discuss the Department of Justice's recent decision to NOT seek the death penalty in its pending cases against El Mayo, Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, and Rafael Caro Quintero. In particular, I opine on the RCQ decision and what it does for the concept of closure in the Camarena case. Finally, I announce an indefinite hiatus from the podcast to focus on other matters, while I continue to investigate the Camarena case and other matters. I also note the re-start of the Cartels, Conspiracies, and Camarena YouTube channel.

This is a must-listen. Chef Jose Camarena, Executive Chef at Portland's highly regarded República, may just be the youngest guest of over 400 on our podcast. But you wouldn't know it if we hadn't drawn attention to that fact. At just 24, he's in a position few others are at his age, and it's easy to see how he got as far as he's gotten at such a young age. We talk about his family Sunday dinners, how he became interested in the food industry and how his family lineage of hard work in horse grooming instilled in him the grit to work hard to reach success in a tough industry. We cover some of the places he's worked, who Lalo's Portland mentors have been, including chef Lauro Romero, who passed away two years ago, leaving a huge hole in many hearts. Chef Lalo will be appearing at Steelport Knife Company on 2/22 in the first of a series of knife skills classes Steelport is putting on at their Sandy Blvd factory, where you can meet him and learn some helpful knife skills. Stay tuned to Right at the Fork for interviews with more Steelport chefs. We also talk about his Mazatlan favorite places, as well as his faves in Portland. And we wish him well with his wedding coming up in March! https://www.mexico-forward.com/ @lalocamarena_ @republicapdx @steelportknifeco Right at the Fork is supported by: Zupan's Markets: www.Zupans.com RingSide Steakhouse: www.RingSideSteakhouse.com Portland Food Adventures: www.PortlandFoodAdventures.com
