Rev. Teague is grateful to be back at UU Houston. This time he is pondering that we are fairly consistently celebrating the PRIDE Month events and participating in parades as radical welcoming religious communities of Unitarian Universalists. We have the appropriate rainbow attire and are led in these events by our own LGBTQQIA+ members and friends. We have hosted same sex marriages for many years prior to the legal recognition and were present to do more of them as the freedom to marry became the law of the land. Rev. Teague believes that given our loving stance, maybe we are ready and able to do more. It is Fathers Day Sunday and he proposes we embrace the communal effort to be the providers and protectors of the children now proudly carrying rainbow flags and living in myriad queer identities. He says, "I know I could have used the parental help. I think there are youth looking for what we can uniquely offer."

Laura tells us her journey of reconnecting to her own intuition and the moment that after 2 years of quietly knowing, she trusted her intuition to make a decision to pivot the work she was bringing into the world. The United States Supreme Court ruled on June 15, in a 6-3 decision, Bostock v. Clayton County, that Title VII’s prohibitions against sex discrimination in the workplace protects gay, lesbian and transgender employees. Justice Neil Gorsuch, who wrote the majority opinion, concluded that the term “sex” in Title VII applies to one’s identification as LGBTQQIA, writing, “An employer who fires an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex. Sex plays a necessary and undisguisable role in the decision, exactly what Title VII forbids.” Now that there is clarity on this issue, employers must make sure their policies, practices and training includes awareness of LGBTQQIA legal obligations and protections. While there will most likely be future cases regarding ancillary issues, such as bathroom/shower privacy and religious beliefs, there can be no question that those in the LGBTQQIA community are protected by federal law and cannot be discriminated against. Even without this decision, most in the field of HR Management have long practiced and pushed their organizations to treat everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, with the same respect, fairness and equality, as anyone else in the workplace. This is one of the reasons Kelly and I are proud to be HR professionals, HR is generally on the cutting edge of positive social change and inclusiveness. We’ve been hearing a lot about the LGBTQQIA community the past several years as more and more arguments are made that those who fall into this group are protected by Title VII’s prohibitions against sex discrimination. Several lower courts have split on whether Title VII’s provisions include protection for LGBTQQIA members. The Supreme Court heard arguments regarding this issue on October 8, 2019 and it was unclear as to how the justices were leaning.
Nicholas Hatten is the Founder and Executive Director of the San Joaquin Pride Center (SJCP). A proven leader and agent for change, Hatten has challenged the San Joaquin County and Central Valley to evaluate how it can best serve its LGBT+ community. He forged a collaboration with the Los Angeles Pride Center and other LGBT+ agencies that resulted in a million-dollar Covered California Outreach & Education grant, the first time the Central Valley area was included in LGBT+ specific healthcare work. As an organizer, Nicholas was instrumental in empowering local LGBT+ youth to advocate for anti-bullying resources and a focus on better school climates for LGBT+ youth on campus. This resulted in the Stockton Unified School District is the very first district in the state of California to include "LGBT" specific language in their LCFF/LCAP budget in 2016. As the recipient of one of three California Reducing Disparities Pilot Project grants, Hatten is now collaborating with California's Public Health Department on a model for increasing acceptance of LGBT+ youth in schools and within the community that will reduce the rate of incidents that lead to mental health illness among our youth.
