Do you get stage fright? You might not be an actor but perhaps you feel the fear when it comes to work presentations or small talk at parties... well, even critically acclaimed actor David Tennant has anxieties around performing under pressure. He reckons little bit of fear can be good to keep you from getting complacent though... In this chat, Fearne and David talk through how to work through those moments when you feel your brain is going to give up on you. The naivety of youth can give you a sense of self-confidence, but with age comes the security of having more concrete experiences of things going well to drawn on. This is a really useful coping mechanism to have in your back pocket for when anxiety starts to creep in. Plus, LGBTQ+ ally David gives his take on whether celebrities like him should use their voice for social activism, and verifies some of the stories Fearne read online about him... As mentioned in episode eight, last year - we got mixed feedback about the series of episodes we did with members of the LGBTQIA+ community to honor Pride Month. But in alignment with the goal of this podcast, not everyone will like every topic we talk about, especially topics that make people uncomfortable. You see, growing up, most of our parents never educated us on sex, relationships, and marriage because they believed that talking about it meant that they were encouraging us to do it. The truth is that as adults, many of us wish we had this education when we were younger. Also, whether they spoke to us about it or not, that didn't mean sex and/or relationships weren't still happening behind their backs. Using the same logic as the sex/relationship talk, whether we agree (or not) to educate ourselves about the lgbtqia+ community, or think that acknowledging them means encouraging their “practices” (as some people call it) in our African community, one FACT still remains: the lgbtqia+ community exists in the African community whether we agree or not. They are actually close family and friends and you may not even know it. You don't have to agree with them or their values, but you should respect them for who they are and how they choose to live their life, just like you will expect to be respected. We can always agree to disagree in love and respect! I learnt a lot from this episode and hope you do too. Meet Our Guest: Mr. John Adewoye was born in Kwara State Nigeria and was the last child of the 4 surviving children of his parents.  “Surviving” characterized his life story from his teenage years till he was 40 years old because of my sexual orientation. The struggle was really intense for him throughout his elementary school years where he was nicknamed "obinrin" meaning a girl because of his effeminate behavior. The teenage years were particularly traumatic for him because neither he nor those who bullied me had a name for what set him apart from other boys. No one addressed this issue with him as would have been today; not even his parents.  At age 40, he came to the US in pursuit of conversion therapy, where he came to the realization that he needed no cure but self-acceptance.  As a then-priest, he also got to be aware of the fact that he need to leave the Priesthood to keep his self-acceptance, grow in it and share it. He decided to come out and stay as a visible example for those who may need his evidence in their personal struggles as homosexuals.  Mr. Adewoye has been happily married to his partner Adebayo John Omoworare since 2016. He is happy with his life and desires the same for everyone.   Things You Will Learn in This Episode:  [00:01 – 03:00] Introduction Introducing our guest - Mr. John Adewoye [03:00 – 30:00] Mr. John Adewoye Shares His Journey  Life growing up in Nigeria Going to seminary school His work as a priest in Nigeria Coming to America His work in the LGBTQ+ Community Awards & Recognitions [30:00 – 50:00] Life In America & Activism Finding his purpose in America Activism and advocacy for African LGBTQ+ people Advising the African community How to get in touch with Mr. John Adewoye [50:00 – 57:34] Final Words Mr. John Adewoye final words Anyoh's final words   Tweetable Quotes “When we try to conform to the pressure of the society, it lead to  some women to marry the man they weren't really attracted to. It has led some men to marry women who they aren't attracted and that has led to raise suffering of the people we should love.” - Mr. John Adewoye   “So it is our duty, though we may not accept or support - it's our duty to educate ourselves so that we can respect them, because regardless of our beliefs, we must respect them first and foremost, as humans, we must respect one another.” - Anyoh Fombad   “So either gay or straight - the most important thing for me, is whatever I can do for humanity. And that is what I see many people in our LGBT authority trying to do for the community based on their own limited reality” - Mr. John Adewoye   LEAVE A REVIEW and tell us what you think about the episode so we can continue putting out the best content just for you! However, she got discharged under the old "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy due to her sexual orientation. She then became a dedicated LGBTQ+ activist in Washington, D.C. while continuing her role as an Intelligence Analyst for the Department of Defense. It's time for our second annual Pride episode! Last year, in episode 57, we described the visuals of Toronto's Pride Parade. This year we take a look at the historical event that led to the first political (and  celebratory!) Pride Marches in North America: the Stonewall riots. To hear firsthand accounts from those who were at Stonewall, and journalists who have studied the event and its aftermath, check out this New York Times video. It's not described, but the interview subjects are quite descriptive in their recollections.https://youtu.be/S7jnzOMxb14Support the show

ACT UP was a landmark organization that took LGBTQ rights activism to a new level of in-your-face activism. Do we need to return to that kind of strategy abainst the new wave of homo- and trans-phobia? We talk to author Ron Goldberg today to get his input. We will be discussing the history of ACT UP New York and his upcoming book Boy With The Bullhorn . Boy With The Bullhorn:A Memoir and History of ACT UP New York is Goldberg's immersive and chronological history of the New York chapter of ACT UP, the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, and a memoir of his coming of age during the darkest years of the AIDS epidemic, told with great energy and surprising humor with an intimate look into ACT UP's structure, processes, tactics and strategies. The book provides lessons and insights for new generations of activists, highlighting key demonstrations and lesser-known actions as the group successfully battles politicians, researchers, pharmaceutical companies, religious leaders, the media, and an often-uncaring public to change the course of the AIDS epidemic. Episode Summary: I am honored to welcome our guest Erik Bottcher,  a dedicated public servant and activist who has devoted his life to progressive causes and to the betterment of the community he loves. Now, he is running to represent our community on the New York City Council. Erik believes that if we come together and rise to this moment, New York City's best days are still ahead. Growing up in a small town in the Adirondack Mountains as the only gay person he knew, Erik's personal struggles with depression sparked in him a lifelong dedication to helping the most marginalized members of our society. His journey from a childhood in a remote area to a life of activism in New York City was profiled in a 2015 feature story cover story in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise titled “Erik Bottcher's Fight for Equality.” Erik's career in public service began in 2009 as the LGBTQ & HIV/AIDS Community Liaison at the New York City Council, where he organized grassroots campaigns on issues including transgender rights, hate crimes, housing for people with HIV/AIDS, and marriage equality. He helped develop groundbreaking initiatives against bullying in New York City public schools and to break down stigma against people living with HIV/AIDS. Mawjoudin, Damj, Chouf and Falgatna as well as many Tunisian activists and human rights defenders are fighting for the rights of the LGBTQ community that is still being discriminated against, not only by an archaic penal law but also vague morality legislations in addition to social stigma and intolerance. We had the honor to speak to non-binary queer activist Weema Yahyaoui Askri to get an idea about queer rights in Tunisia, how far the fight has come and what is being done to protect members of the LGBTQ community.

Zoe Raemer has seen massive transformation over the past 30+ years in LGBTQ rights and social justice in the North West Territories. Earlier this week she joined Ben over zoom from her home in Victoria, to share some incredible stories about the LGBTQ rights movement in Yellowknife and her involvement over the years. Here is a timeline of significant events that Zoe recently shared to social media. It's incredible how much can change in a person's lifetime when even a tiny group of very passionate and determined people take a stand. 1990 - NWT's first entry into the Gay Games (Vancouver - softball) 1990 - Yellowknife's first organized gay and lesbian ( sorry BTQ friends, not only are we old, but we were acronym challenged and politically incorrect) Halloween party 1992 - Yellowknife's first public pride event: the basement of the Scotia Centre in the YWCA offices. Four (!!) people attended including one journalist and one toddler. And me. And the toddler's Mom, my dear friend. 1994- Team NWT attends Gay Games in New York City (Billiards) 1995 - The first request is made to the City of Yellowknife to proclaim Gay Pride Day. It fails. 1996 - A second request is made to the City with respect to Gay Pride Day. It fails. Again. 1997 - OutNorth formed 1997 - A third request is made to the City of Yellowknife to proclaim Gay Pride Day. You guessed it. It fails. 1997 - OutNorth sponsor "Gay Day Anyway" ( as the NNSL papers dub it) and members offer folks a celebratory slice of cake. This tradition continues to this day. 1997 - Canada's national gay and lesbian organization, EGALE, elects its first board member from the NWT 1997 - OutNorth's lobbying efforts to change the definition of spouse in NWT laws are unsuccessful but generate reams of copy for local papers. 1998 - Yellowknife's first gay and lesbian film festival is held at the Wildcat Cafe. In the winter. With a sheet hung from the rafters as a screen. 1998 - At long last the City of Yellowknife proclaims a now forgotten summer day as Gay Pride Day. 1999 - Supreme Court of Canada decision on rights of same sex spouses leads to change in NWT laws. But only after some highly ridiculous commentary from the then legislators of the NWT. 2002 - A new Adoption and Family Law Act is passed in the NWT giving gays and lesbians unprecedented familial rights in the Territories. 2002 - Human Rights legislation is passed in the NWT banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and sexual identity. The legislation is the first in Canada - indeed in North America - to explicitly protect transgender people. 2005 - Gays and lesbians can legally marry in the NWT 2006 - The old folks got tired.

Sa publication la plus récente s’intitule « Mithliyy, mithlak: language and LGBTQ Activism in Lebanon and Palestine », dans l’ouvrage collectif Queer Asia: Decolonising and Reimagining Sexuality and Gender.

He says the callous eight-minute-long killing of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis Police officer in the midst of a pandemic, which has been the catalyst for a worldwide demand for police accountability and long denied racial justice, seems to have a certain rhyme with the callous disregard for an epidemic that was initially killing despised minorities and spurred the LGBTQ community and its allies to action.

Thirty years ago, a group of friends came together to network, have fellowship and enjoy life. They didn’t intend to break barriers but they did by doing community work through entertaining. They called themselves THE BILLIONAIRE BOYS’ CLUB (BBC) The BBC primarily wanted to make sure that everyone had a good time and meet new people. According to Robert Tate, “We never knew we were doing anything special. All we wanted to do was entertain the community. I now realize that we are activists in a different kind of way. Our way was to bring people together and network with community organizations.” In 1996 the BBC in collaboration with numerous LGBT organizations — including the Men of Color Motivation Group, Karibu House and Ladies of a Current Affair started HOTTER THAN JULY metro-Detroit’s annual celebration of Gay Pride for the African American LGBTQ community. HOTTER THAN JULY is one of the oldest Black Gay Pride celebrations in the Midwest and takes place the last weekend of each July every year. This year as the BBC is celebrates its 30th anniversary they will host the official 30th anniversary party on Friday, July 28th. Then take over hosting duties for the Hotter Than July brunch on Sunday, July 30th.   Tate says “I now realize that I am an activist in a different kind of way. My way is to bring people together and network with community organizations. Entertainment and community are different now, but they can be brought back together with the same flavor but for a different era. “ .
