We call this episode, lovingly, the auntie auntie auntie episode (or the niece niece nibling episode) shouted at the top of our lungs. We scream their names in the key of care, of reclaiming our bodies, lives, and pleasure(s) for ourselves (and our time). In this episode we talk with Anna Almore and Erica or ET, two friends and educators, about their moments of what Anna calls deviant caretaking, the act of choosing pleasure, accountability to one's deepest self over what work as teachers, teacher-educators, and students demands of one's self. Anna and Erica share about lessons learned one night at a strip club and releasing themselves from the disciplining of settler colonialism's projects of school, capitalism, misogynoir, and respectability—led by a long inheritance of aunties who showed them how to do thee things. And as nieces and aunties themselves, they reflect on what they now teach another generation, finding that the lessons and blessings their nieces and relatives give them to be the most urgent ones of all. For this episode, Dr. G speaks with renowned sexuality educator, podcaster, model, cancer survivor and activist Ericka Hart (she/they) about the experience of existing in Black femme bodies, and the various systems (capitalism, fatphobia, transphobia, Western medicine, colorism, antiBlackness) impacting that lived experience.  (Click to download the episode transcript) Episode Question to Ponder: What is your relationship to the Black Femme body? Guest Bio: A kinky, poly, cancer-warrior, activist and sexuality educator with a Master's of Education in Human Sexuality from Widener University, Ericka Hart has taught sexuality education for elementary aged youth to adults across New York City for over 10 years, including serving as a Peace Corps HIV/AIDS volunteer in Ethiopia from 2008-2010. Diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in May 2014 at the age of 28, she realized that neither her identity as a queer black femme, nor her sex life as a survivor, was featured prominently in her treatment. She decided to do something about it: going topless (and viral) in public, bearing her double mastectomy scars to end the lack of black, brown LGBTQIA+ representations and visibility in breast cancer awareness. Dismantling the ways that systemic patriarchy and anti-black standards of beauty affect our everyday lives, Ericka is shifting ingrained cultural modes and attitudes on chronic illness and posits visibility as vital to any radically inclusive movement toward equity. But it is her work on the medical industrial complex that forces us to see our institutions and systems of care as complicit in the perpetuation of illness in marginalized communities; unabashedly centering and sentient such that queer, trans black, brown and femme voices aren't lost among the drone of scholarly research less skilled than Hart in bringing academia to the places it refuses to go. Audiences around the world admire Ericka for her ability to challenge anti-blackness everywhere it rears its head–from the front pages of magazines, fashion week runways to the lectern. She is committed to empowering students to make a difference in the world and with each other, opening up robust discourse that connects sexual health and wellness to the systemic issues at the root of social injustice, helping students at over 20 colleges and universities across the country this past year alone discover actionable steps to confront those issues powerfully. Ericka Hart wants to challenge the preconceived notions people have about breast cancer survivors. “The biggest misconception is that we somehow have low self-esteem if we’ve had any sort of mastectomy,” Hart tells Bustle. “There is the assumption that every breast cancer survivor is a woman, and now your womanhood is taken away because you’ve had a double mastectomy. That is just silly — that is so not true for so many people. They’re just happy that cancer is out of their body.” Hart was diagnosed with breast cancer in her late twenties. And she is quick to point out that youth and health didn't stop her from contracting the disease. “When I was 28, I was like, ‘Nothing’s going to happen to me at this age, I’m healthy, I’m fun,’” she shares. “At the time I was diagnosed, I was doing yoga five times a week. I ate hella vegetables. I would drink water. I did all the things that medicine — and I would say fatphobia — says that you need to be doing to stay healthy. And none of that mattered. That didn’t stop me from getting breast cancer.” It was May 2014, and Hart was engaged to be married that September. She had already selected her dress. All the details for her big day were coming together. “I had long dreadlocks that I loved,” she recalls. “All of that began to look very different. I had to take a semester off grad school. I got married on a full round of chemotherapy, and I was completely bald.” Although she still got to wear the dress she originally chose, alterations were needed to accommodate her changing body. “I went to my dress fittings with a drain, which is essentially a tube of your blood out of your body,” she shares. “The seamstress was great, but it was just uncomfortable.” Hart underwent a double mastectomy in June that year. She had tissue expanders in her chest when she got married in September. It was another unforeseen adjustment. “They were not the breasts I had when I did the first dress fitting,” she says. “I did chemotherapy for a year, and the day after my 30th birthday was my last chemo treatment.” Today, she’s six years in remission. It’s been a long journey for the sex educator and social justice activist, who’s starring in Ralph Lauren’s 2020 Pink Pony campaign, titled “More Conversations, More Love.” Established in 2000, Pink Pony’s mission is to reduce disparities in cancer care, lead the fight to find a cure, and help ensure that access to quality treatment is available to everyone at an earlier and more treatable stage. During her diagnosis and treatment, Hart became acutely aware of the disparities faced by people in marginalized communities battling cancer. “When I was getting chemotherapy, the nurses would kind of stare at my partner and I,” she recalls. “This was in New York. It was like they’d never seen a queer couple anywhere.” Hart also worked full time through chemotherapy, and she wasn’t able to take a recovery period after her surgery. “The average time after a double mastectomy to be at home resting is like a month,” she says. “I talked to other breast cancer survivors, and they told me they took six months off after their double mastectomies. I went back to work after two weeks. I look back and have no idea how the hell I did that. And today, six years later, I’m still healing from that.” It was important for Hart to be involved with the Pink Pony Initiative so she could help highlight the diversity of breast cancer survivors. When people think of this demographic, she explains, one type of image usually comes to mind. “There are definitely not enough queer, non-binary, and trans stories of breast cancer,” she says. “If you Google breast cancer right now, you’ll probably get Angelina Jolie and some white diagram of a breast that has a lump. If you look at a lot of the campaigns for breast cancer, everybody is a white, cisgender woman that lives in the suburbs and has three kids and a picket fence. That’s just not the case. We’re missing a lot of people.” By telling her own story of survival, Hart is playing a key role in fighting for representation for all breast cancer survivors. “Being diagnosed with breast cancer I started to see, ‘Wow, I’m missing a lot in my activism,’” she says. “I need to make sure that throughout what I’m teaching, that this work is accessible. As an able-bodied person, I just wasn’t thinking about that. We have to bring nuance to this conversation and talk about this in so many different ways, because it is harming people when we keep talking about it in the same way.”

Welcome back my lovers. How are y'all holding up? Firstly, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. It has been amazing to host the last two seasons and I am beyond ecstatic that we are back for another one. To kick things off, Julia from @soihadanabortion takes the reins in a flipping of the script. I got to experience what it's like relinquishing control and being in the hot seat. Julia has me blabbing about the origins of the podcast, as well as its current process. She asks me poignant questions about the lessons I've learned, in this space we've created, and how they highlight where we are at as a society. We then move on to the AMA questions that you submitted! Topics: avoidance, cognitive dissonance, survival, generational patterns, being called in/out, learning as a process of elimination, certainty as the basis for oppression, accountability, non-monogamy, learning about the kink community while entering it, kink anxiety, bullying, the evolution of my understandings of sex from childhood to now, every experience having inherent value, masturbation, world change, activism, anti-racism and other slippery rabbit holes. Here are some Black sex-positive advocates you should be following (as promised in the episode) : Ericka Hart, M. Ed @ihartericka, Ev’Yan Whitney. @evyan.whitney, Ashley Cobb @sexwithashley, Afrosexology @afrosexology_, Goody Howard @askgoody, Unf*ck Your Polyamory @polyrolemodels, Cindy Lee Alves @cindyleealves. To hear Jeffrey’s story is to witness the radical and magical acts of a queer, Black man getting free. And truly we know that feeling free and being free is worth the energy, as well as deserved. We also know that we cannot get free alone because as Audre Lorde taught us, “Without community, there is no liberation”, so may we all listen with the intention of connection, love and liberation.  All violence streams from white supremacy. White folks, may we continually re-commit to doing the work of undoing white-supremacy in all its forms. So, as and after you listen, I invite you to hold up a mirror, and ask, what are the ways that I perpetuate white supremacy? What am I doing to change this? And yes, white queers, “Your queerness does not absolve your racism”, (Ericka Hart). This is our work.  Black, Indigenous and all People of Color, may you feel seen, heard and freely breathe in the points of connection offered here. May this podcast be a spell of safety, love and justice that centers and honors queer, Black folks in both bravery and joy, and all things in between

Jazz Goldman and I just went to Pride. Jazz is a friend of mine, an ocassional sex partner of mine, a professional cuddler for cuddlist, all about the performing arts, and all about community building. Jazz and I have in common being some flavor of gender non-confirming and also being mixed race humans. In Jazz’ case, they are a Black Jew, and in my case I’m a British Indian. Very, very different backgrounds, and yet the experience of being a quote “third culture” end quote child has its similarities. Jazz is most importantly a sexuality intellectual. We sometimes get lost on tangents as we both find each other so interesting even when we’re off topic. Back on topic: did I say we two mixed race, queers of colour were just at Pride? Well it turns out some queers, especially some queers of colour, have strong feelings about Pride sometimes and we want to present some thoughts that might currently be less common in the mainstream while remaining as polite and kind to current organizers as possible as they still fill an important role or niche - but we’ll say more about that in the podcast. What is body positivity ?Body positivity has taken over social media in the last few years. The movement is based on the relationship we have with our bodies, encouraging us to achieve self-acceptance.The drive took off in 1996 thanks to two American women. Elizabeth Scott, a psychotherapist, was contacted by Connie Sobczak, who was victim to an eating disorder at the time. In honour of her dead sister, Sobczak created the Body Positive movement along with Scott. The organisation encourages individuals to change the world, rather than feeling the need to change their bodies . The two founders continue to offer seminars and other group training sessions to this day. Body positivity posts can be found all over Instagram, with hashtags alongside photos of people of all body types and morphologies.Body positivity is first and foremost an ideology, rather than just a collection of photos. The movement helps those with self-image challenges to love their bodies. Getting started is really simple. Stand in front of a mirror and say out loud the things you notice most about your body. Most people mention their supposed flaws before anything positive.A body positive attitude will help you see these “flaws” as qualities and therefore actually appreciate them. The idea is that you say what you like about yourself and show off your flaws, rather than hiding them. This helps us to feel beautiful and love ourselves. Which in turn allows us to overcome fears and break down taboos.Check out the story of breast cancer survivor Ericka Hart for example. She became a body positive symbol by posing topless following breast reconstruction surgery. It turned out that prior to the surgery, she hadn’t been able to find a single photo of a black woman having undergone the same procedure. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

But it’s not Ericka’s impressive bio that leaves us inspired -- rather the powerful use of her voice to represent a silenced majority. If you’re interested in hearing a different cancer perspective than that shown in the mainstream media, or if you're simply looking to feel moved and empowered by a woman who speaks her truth no matter how far it falls outside the ‘cultural norm’ join us as we talk Cancer, Casually.

Radically Selfish

Today’s episode is all about championing marginalized people, in whatever way you can. Here to inspire and enlighten us is the incredible Ericka Hart, self-described black queer femme, Sagittarius, popcorn connoisseur, breast cancer survivor, and sexuality educator.   After a double mastectomy, Ericka went viral a few years ago when she decided to go topless at Afropunk. The decision was rooted in a desire to show her scars, and to give a voice to the black, brown, queer, and trans people who are all too often left out of entire conversations — including breast cancer.   It was also an opportunity for Ericka to reclaim her body, both as a cancer survivor and black femme. She believes that anyone who exists in a black body is inherently an activist, and has dedicated herself to educating people about how to survive American white supremacy.   From beauty and sexuality to identity and racism; from social justice and healing to marginalization and discomfort; Ericka weaves the pieces of her own story together to share with us how she came to stand up for people who can’t always stand up for themselves.     More Radical Lessons in this episode:   — There’s so much evidence in the world to tell you why you can’t or shouldn’t do a thing; don’t let it force you to take yourself out of the game before you’ve even tried.   — America loves beauty, and beauty is privilege. If you have it, use your privilege to fight for the people who don’t.   — It doesn’t matter what you do. What does matter is if you’re fulfilled, how you identify, and how you navigate your identity.   — There’s a lot of learning that has to be done on a regular basis. How we think about ourselves is institutional, ideological, and exists around a set of principles that are in place for no other reason than to keep some people comfortable — usually white cis men.   — If you’re white, don’t just acknowledge your privilege: use it. Talk to your landlord about gentrification, put your housing on the line, fight for equal pay at work, and give black and brown people whatever resources you can.   — Healing isn’t always the goal; sometimes it’s important just to disrupt things.   — The life expectancy for a black trans woman is 35. Black mothers are dying at higher rates in this country than any other mothers, because of the physical and emotional stress of racism on their bodies. This is an epidemic, and we all need to uplift and liberate black femmes.   — All beings, if they want it, are desiring or deserving of pleasure in whatever way that looks for them.   Links! Website: http://www.ihartericka.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ihartericka/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/ihartericka   Share Ericka’s Wisdom on Social Media! Post these Quotes:   “I’m always asserting who I am because people come to me with all these assumptions about who I am as a black person.” “In every way that I can, and in every space, I’m trying to dismantle white supremacy.” “Don’t resist what’s uncomfortable. If you’re noticing what’s uncomfortable, that’s a symptom of privilege.” “If you focus on the most marginalized, you will reach everybody. The problem is we usually start with ‘everybody’ — which means white.”
