Trump's Mideast Diplomacy

President Trump's recent visit to the Gulf region marked a dramatic shift from the previous administration's Middle East diplomacy. In his visit to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, Trump focused on securing significant investment commitments and commercial partnerships to support the region's AI and other ambitions.  The trip showcased Trump's transactional approach to foreign policy—one focused on bilateral deals rather than regional frameworks, and economic partnerships over military interventions. It also raised important questions about oil markets, geopolitical competition with China, nuclear agreements, and the future of energy prices. So what are the likely impacts of massive investment pledges from Gulf nations? Do low oil prices limit the ability to make good on them? What is the outlook for oil prices with uncertainty over OPEC+ policy, a possible Iran deal, and possible new sanctions on Russia? And what does Trump's transactional diplomacy mean for traditional alliances and regional stability?  This week, Jason Bordoff speaks with Helima Croft, Joe McMonigle, and Karen Young about how the Trump administration is reshaping U.S. relations with Middle East countries and the long- and short-term implications it will have on energy markets and geopolitics. Helima is managing director and global head of commodity strategy at RBC Capital Markets, where she leads the coverage of energy markets and geopolitical risk. Joe is a distinguished visiting fellow here at the Center on Global Energy Policy and the founder and president of the Global Center for Energy Analysis, an independent research and analysis firm. Karen is a senior research scholar here at the Center on Global Energy Policy and a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute where she focuses on the political economy of the Gulf States and energy policy. Recorded live at a SAND Community Gathering (December 2024) hosted by Zaya and Maurizio Benazzo. In this intimate conversation with poet and philosopher David Whyte and his wife, cultural architect Gayle Karen Young, explore the tender territories of grief, belonging and rest. Drawing from David's new book Consolations II, this unique dialogue offers a glimpse into how two lives intertwine in both understanding and living these essential human experiences and how loss and heartbreak can become doorways to deeper belonging. The conversation weaves together poetry, contemplative wisdom, and the authentic experience of two people who have walked the path of partnership through its many thresholds. It offers both practical insight and spiritual nourishment for anyone seeking to understand how we grow through love's many faces—from its first tender beginnings to its most profound depths of kinship. David Whyte, raised between his Irish mother's imaginative influence and his father's Yorkshire landscapes, now calls the Pacific Northwest home. He is the author of twelve books of poetry and five books of prose, holding a degree in Marine Zoology and bringing rich experience from his years as a naturalist guide in the Galapagos Islands and leader of expeditions in the Andes, Amazon, and Himalaya. Gayle Karen Young is a cultural architect and catalyst for human and organizational development who believes the world needs leaders who are “able for” what lies ahead. With over two decades in leadership development, she focuses on both the visible, practical aspects of leadership and the invisible work of creating spaces where others can thrive. Your favorite Black-owned brand may quietly close this year — that's what Oui the People founder Karen Young shared with her followers a few weeks ago. In 2020, the beauty industry underwent a revolution of sorts. Black-owned brands became a much-needed albeit long overdue priority. Movements like Pull Up For Change encouraged brands to share what percentage of their business employed Black workers, and many brands whose focus specifically highlighted Black skin were launched, supported and celebrated. However, in the last year, we've seen a wave of hurdles coming for Black-owned businesses and DEI initiatives. We're seeing it in other industries as well: top Chief Diversity Officers at top entertainment companies were said to be “leaving their jobs” last year in a Wall Street Journal story titled “The Rise and Fall of the Chief Diversity Officer.” It was recently reported that thirteen lune, a retailer that highlights minority-owned brands, owed thousands of dollars to brands under its umbrella and their partner JC Penney was restructuring the partnership as a result. And the Fearless Fund, the Black women-owned venture capital firm backing early-stage businesses owned by women of color, including the beauty and wellness brands like Brown Girl Jane, Live Tinted, Bread Beauty Supply and more was indefinitely barred from deploying a program last year that doles out $20,000 grants to Black female entrepreneurs. CW: This episode discusses cinematic sexual violence. The founder of Fun City Editions, Jonathan Hertzberg, joins the podcast from New York City to discuss the boutique video label and their latest blu-ray release, 1983's Deep in the Heart, aka Handgun, directed by Ken Loach's longtime English producer Tony Garnett. Deep in the Heart, a brutal portrayal of American gun culture as seen from an outsider's perspective, stars the undersung actress Karen Young in her screen debut as a Boston schoolteacher working in Dallas who is groomed and then sexually assaulted by a well-liked local attorney and antique gun collector. She gets nowhere trying to get the police and the church to support her quest for justice, but gets all the help she needs from the local gun club, and transformed by the culture and her experience, plans her revenge. The film was bought by Warner Bros. not to release the film properly, but to keep it from interfering with the commercial prospects of their upcoming Clint Eastwood release with a similar theme, Sudden Impact. Deep in the Heart is the kind of film this label specializes in: films that have for various reasons been forgotten in the modern age but deserve to be restored, reissued and rediscovered. Jonathan gives us insight into the process and the challenges of locating and reviving these catalogue titles, and how Deep in the Heart still speaks to contemporary American concerns over 40 years later. Gulf Arab states are looking to build economic bridges with countries in the Middle East and Africa.     Last year, the International Monetary Fund announced that major energy producers – like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates – are expected to collect $1.3 trillion in profits from high oil prices over the next four years. These profits are expected to fund Gulf Arab states' investments abroad.  At home, they aim to diversify their economies and invest in the energy transition although they anticipate oil demand to rise in the next few years.  What does the move toward economic cooperation in the Middle East and Africa mean for the global world order? What does it mean for relationships with the U.S. and China? And to what extent will the energy transition be a focus for investment?    This week, host Bill Loveless talks with Karen Young about her book “The Economic Statecraft of the Gulf Arab States” which came out earlier this year. They discuss how the rise of authoritarian or state capitalism in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa, and West Asia could impact the global energy transition.  Karen is an author and political economist focusing on the Gulf, the broader Middle East and North Africa region, and the intersection of energy, finance, and security. She was a senior fellow and founding director of the Program on Economics and Energy at the Middle East Institute. She is currently a senior research scholar at the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University, SIPA.

In 2014, while working as an executive for Estee Lauder, Keren suffered a particularly bad case of razor burn and decided enough was enough. With $1,500 in her savings, Karen launched Oui the People from her apartment in Brooklyn and turned the shaving industry on its head by developing the world's first safety razor designed especially for women. Key Takeaways:  1. Overview of ovarian cancer.  2. Karen's journey and experience of building the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) and the power of the community 3. The science and symptoms of ovarian cancer; building awareness and education resources for women About Karen Young and the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition Karen Young has been working in the nonprofit sector for more than 35 years and has been the Midwest Regional Manager for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition for more than a decade. Located in Chicago, she oversees six states in the Midwest including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Ms. Young is passionate about the work she does with survivors. Ovarian cancer is one of the leading gynecologic cancers for women and is very often diagnosed in the latter stages. There is no early detection test for this cancer and the programs and services that the NOCC provides are crucial for that reason. She enjoys community collaboration to find the most meaningful partnerships to support her teal community. The Midwest region has quite an array of programs and services available to its survivors and serves over 700 women in the region. Ms. Young has a large corps of volunteers helping to execute programs and services in her area including free meals, free counseling, and financial assistance as well as educational programs and support groups. The chapter offers a variety of opportunities for survivors to meet each other and support one another especially through events like their annual Midwest Together in Teal walk to be held October 15th. Quotes At 2min and 10 seconds “Being one of her primary caregivers, and going through that experience, just really gravitated towards wanting to work with a cancer organization. And I knew nothing about ovarian cancer. But it was because of my mom that it interested me.” At 5min and 20 seconds “The pandemic pushed a lot of nonprofits, including us, you know, out of our comfort zone to reinvent ourselves to go virtual with everything and everything that we do. And the simple fact is, we were starting to identify some of the most basic needs.” At 14 mins and 07 seconds “In fact, the reason why the rate is so high for late stage diagnosis is because there is no reliable early detection test at all, hasn't been in years, they're still working on trying to find one. And even though there are tests that you can get if you suspect like let's say you have symptoms and you go and talk to your general doctor or even your gynecologist and you suspect that maybe you have ovarian cancer, there are some things that they can do to verify whether you do or not, but they are not reliable enough to become an early detection test that they would recommend for us annually every year.” At 23mins and 47 seconds “We talk about the trust and the relationship that we have with our medical professional, you know whether or not you can really feel comfortable that you're getting the best care and they are going to guide you and tell you what you need to know. And if it's really not important at this time, then don't bother me with those details. I can sleep better at night, if I don't know.” Resources An Animated Patient's Guide to Ovarian Cancer - https://nocc.ovarian.org/animated-patient-guide Disclaimer: This podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. Even as prices decline, the tight oil market is once again raising economic and political worries in Washington.  In July, President Biden traveled to the Middle East to meet with several Arab leaders – including Saudi Arabia's King and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Expanding oil supply was high on the list of the administration's diplomatic objectives. Saudi Arabia says it has limited ability to add extra oil to the market, and it's not clear whether OPEC+ countries agree on the path forward for oil output. All of this comes at a time of enormous uncertainty in the global outlook for oil, due to fears of a recession and concerns over Russian supply.  Now all eyes are on OPEC+ in early August. Will Biden's overtures have any consequential impact on production?  This week, host Jason Bordoff sits down with Dr. Karen Young and Bob McNally to discuss what's next for oil markets. Dr. Young is the newest Senior Research Scholar at the Columbia University Center on Global Energy Policy. She was a Senior Fellow and Founding Director of the Program on Economics and Energy at the Middle East Institute.  Bob McNally is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Center on Global Energy Policy. He's the author of Crude Volatility: The History and the Future of Boom-Bust Oil Prices, published by Columbia University Press. In his full-time capacity he is the founder and President of Rapidan Energy Group, an independent energy consulting and market advisory firm based in the Washington DC area. But as Amy and Margaret explain using their own experiences, verified studies, and some slightly cultish Goop material, pattern breaking is entirely possible and may not be as hard as we fear. In this episode, Amy and Margaret discuss: Behaviors versus patterns Ways to notice and change our own patterns What it means to be morally neutral Links to resources mentioned in the episode: Karen Young for Hey Sigmund: Breaking the Cycle of Toxic Parenting – How to Silence Old Toxic Messages for Good "This Be The Verse" by Philip Larkin Robert Taibbi for Psychology Today: Breaking Old Patterns? Does she think that's one of the reasons why Indie beauty brands have had such a successful run over the last 5, or 10 years, whereas bigger brands may have had a harder time connecting with consumers? What kind of that emotional secret sauce to building a brand, being an indie beauty, and interacting with your consumers on a more personal level on social media? Can a big company acquire it and then scale a brand successfully? Her decision to create her own company, the Young group. What is the backstory and what does it do?What have been some of the biggest important lessons she has learned in her years of product development and marketing, or perhaps the importance of packaging and how it has played a role in all of the work that she has done?We see a lot of brand marketing to customers that are honest and transparent about what packaging is and what they should do with it at the end of life. School shootings, traumatic weather events, local fires and acts of terror-- When the world is struck with a catastrophic event, it is natural to want to shield our children from the effects of it. We want to keep their innocence in tact- allowing them to grow up carefree and unfettered—feeling safe and calm wherever they go. We might wonder, if we just don't talk about it- could our children remain in their happy little bubble for the time being? The problem is—we live in a world where children receive messages about traumatic events from many different avenues- it's not just the news that we can easily turn off—or even the 24/7 access to the internet that provides a play by play as negative stories develop. It's also that different families have different rules about such access- with multiple kids of various ages in their homes who are permitted to have more access- so that might mean you send your blithely innocent child to school, ignorant of the scary events that might have occurred, only to have them bombarded with the news from a more informed (perhaps not accurately so) child on the bus—or from a group of kids in class. Knowing that something has happened but not having anyone to explain it in age-appropriate terms and how it relates to our specific children can be frightening to anyone. We all need context, assurance and our own concerns addressed by someone we trust—our kids actually need information to feel safe and-- as a parent or educator who knows the child, you are the perfect person to have this conversation with them. I've talked about this on national TV shows and in written press but I thought it was important to talk about it on my podcast—especially through the lens of anxiety as many kids have trouble dealing with such large-scale events. My next guest tells us that since you know your child best, “it's important to manage the conversation (Or, shall we say, tailor it) based on who they are, what they already know, and what it means for them.” Karen Young has been on our podcast before- talking about anxiety. In fact, her podcast episode is in the top 5 most downloaded episodes of How to Talk to Kids about Anything, of all time. She is back today to discuss with me how we can talk to kids about traumatic world events. Karen has worked as a psychologist in private practice and in educational settings. She founded the popular website, Hey Sigmund, which attracts millions of readers each year. Karen is a sought-after speaker, both at home in Australia and internationally. She is the author of ‘Hey Warrior', a book for kids to help them understand anxiety and find their ‘brave'. The book has now been translated into a number of languages.
