The 1st Hollywood Blockbuster is an action movie the likes had never been seen before. It has action, horror and a giant mechanic shark: now that's cool. Sail with us as we look for this giant man-eating monster.

Walter Kirn is the bestselling author of “Up in the Air,” which became a smash hit movie starring George Clooney. Now Kirn is taking a risk on a longshot business that views America as one giant small town. And that's just the beginning. In addition to his writing, Kirn is a non-partisan political commentator who appears regularly on TV and in podcasts, including one of my personal favorite shows, “America This Week,” which features Walter alongside investigative journalist Matt Taibbi. In a society where algorithms decide what we do and don't see, and which feed us more and more of the same material, Walter is helping people discover new topics and viewpoints.

Molly starts the episode with an update on her son's surgery and the absolute chaos she experienced at the hospital. Our gossip this week includes the embarrassing way some actors have responded to Oscar's backlash and why the most disturbing thing about Julia Fox's apartment tour wasn't the size. We discuss the article, "Everyone Is Beautiful But No One Is Horny" about why modern action and superhero movies "fetishize the body, even as they desexualize it" and a newly published interview with Lisa Marie Presley about Scientology and how they brainwashed her to believe she was directly responsible for the death of her father and Michael Jackson due to her ‘suppressive' personality. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is the first book in her bestselling trilogy (though it has since been added to with a prequel). First released in 2008, it was made into a Hollywood Blockbuster in 2012 (which made Jennifer Lawrence a household name). It is a story of political intrigue and mass murder made to look like entertainment. So, what did I think? Was it a book I liked more or less on the second reading? And how did the film fare? Find out in the first of my November Adaptation episodes.
By the early 2000's, Juan Carlos was a man on a mission... and one of his favourite places to 'work' was Las Vegas. In this episode Darrell follows the breadcrumbs of Juan's life to the city that never sleeps, meets an ex-detective just as determined to find some answers, and hears about an audacious robbery ripped straight from the pages of a Hollywood Blockbuster. And perhaps - while we're in Vegas - we might even catch a glimpse of the man himself... Follow Con Juan only on Wondery+. “YOU MESS WITH ONE OF US, YOU MESS WITH ALL OF US!“Just in time for the 20th anniversary of one of the greatest super hero (origin) movies from one of the greatest directors to ever tackle the genre, we at Retro Grade Podcast have decided to cover Spider-Man from 2002, directed by Sam Raimi, starring Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, and Kirsten Dunst. Although there have been several Peter Parker's since 2002, none of them captured the duality of the Spider-Man like the first one. The duality of how fun and unfun being a hero is. For every win Spider-Man has, Peter Parker gets a few L's, and this is what makes the character so endearing, relatable and somewhat inspiring. We talk about the Willem Dafoe's classic portrayal of Norman Osbourne, the Green Goblin. There's a lot of ways to play a villain, and the way Dafoe chooses to rides that fine line between silly and scary, bouncing back and forth between making him more entertaining than any villain in the MCU (until he reprised the role of course.) He turns all of his dialogue into classic one-liners that we still laugh at today. We get into the way Sam Raimi's iconic, campy and visual style permeates through the fact that Spider-Man is Hollywood Blockbuster made for mainstream audiences. His style lends itself to the comic-book genre in a way that we haven't really seen since. Needless to say, we are beyond excited to see his return to the genre in Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness!Because there is so much to talk about with the making of this movie and the movie itself, we decided to do another two-parter similar to our Godfather episodes. So stay tuned for our Making Of special, to hear us talk about how the movie was made and how the national tragedy of 9/11 shaped the making of Spider-Man!Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o
