THE CITY AND environs of Astoria strike most visitors as the kind of place where pirate loot might be stashed away. Certainly it seems to have struck Steven Spielberg that way, back in the early 1980s, when the legendary pirate-treasure film The Goonies was being shot. But the town may actually have come by this impression honestly. There are still a few stories about hidden treasure in and around Astoria -- not counting the silver-screen “Goon Docks” story of “One-Eyed Willy.” And who knows? One or two of them may actually be true. (Astoria, Clatsop County; 1890s, 1920s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/21-10.astoria-treasure-legends-602.html)

Some might argue that treasure hunting is a thing of the past. That, we've discovered, plotted, surveyed, and satellite mapped all there is to discover on this planet. But in reality, treasure hunting comes in all sorts of different forms, consider American Pickers on History Channel, aren't they searching for treasure? And with the rise in popularity of shows like The Curse of Oak Island, Skinwalker Ranch and Lost Gold of World War II it would seem that treasure hunting is still alive and well. But there is another facet of searching that's especially intriguing (to me) and has been brought to the surface as recently as last year. Take for instance, the discovery of Ernest Shackleton's lost vessel The Endurance. You're probably wondering what all this has to do with cars? As we reported on Drive Thru Episode #20 (in March of 2022); there was a shipwreck containing millions of dollars of high end vehicles like Porsches, Lamborghinis, Bugattis and more. But this isn't the first time vehicles have been lost at sea. Author and explorer Larry Jorgensen joins us tonight to talk about a little known shipwreck that cost Detroit hundreds of vehicles!

In Episode 397: The Lost Gold of Dents Run, we are joined by Kem and Den Parada, a father-and-son treasure hunting duo based out of Pennsylvania. Back in the 1970s, Den was on the hunt for a lost Civil War treasure made up of 52 gold bars that went “missing” while being transported from Virginia to Philadelphia. In today's currency, the gold bars were estimated to be worth close to $400,000,000, which would be the largest buried treasure recovered in U.S. history. One day when Den was at work, a psychic entered the store, found his way over to Den, and ended up revealing a location where he believed Den would find the gold. This encounter set off a nearly 50-year-long search for the Civil War treasure. After investing so much time and effort into their endeavor, the Paradas had the treasure pegged and proceeded to follow proper legal means of recovering it. They called in the F.B.I. and believed everything was aboveboard and ready to unearth the treasure of a lifetime – but they soon regretted it all when government agencies moved in under the cover of night and stole the gold out from under them. Kem and Den tell us everything about their incredible story, from how they found the gold, to government agencies trying to derail their efforts, to disclosing that they know where more gold is stashed – and this time they plan to get it. In this episode, Will interviews the highly successful documentary and film director Edward Gorsuch to find out his backstory. Gorsuch began his career at Kevin Costner's production company where he was directly involved in the production of the Oscar winning film, “Dances with Wolves” and also worked on “The Bodyguard”, again starring Costner together with the late Whitney Houston. Gorsuch specialises in non-scripted, factual programmes in the “tough job”, adventure genre. He has produced Discovery Channels' highest rated series, “Gold Rush”, as well as “Dino-Hunters” and “Bionic Builders”. For the History Channel he has produced “Ice Road Truckers” and “Lost Gold of World War 2”. More information on my Instagram: @the_backstory_podcast
October 13, 1982. The announcement came from Switzerland, across the world from where Jim Thorpe was raised on Indian territory in Oklahoma. In his time, Thorpe was the most popular athlete in the world, winning two gold medals at the 1912 Olympics. But for a variety of reasons—including his Native American heritage—those medals were stripped away. But today, though Thorpe passed away years earlier, his children will receive the medals that their father rightly won. In a special collaboration with our sibling podcast, History This Week, we seek to answer: how does Jim Thorpe rise from an Indian boarding school to become “The Greatest Athlete of All Time"? And why was his legacy almost destroyed?Special thanks to Sunnie Clahchischiligi, freelance journalist and PhD candidate in Cultural, Indigenous, and Navajo Rhetoric at the University of New Mexico; and David Maraniss, associate editor at the Washington Post and author of Path Lit by Lightning: The Life of Jim Thorpe. The long awaited, probably forgotten, but much talked about Honda Gold Wing video podcast from the Brap Talk Motorcycle Podcast. Hey, it only took us two years to publish it! Of note, we talk a bit about the luggage situation on the 2018 Honda Gold Wing Tour, and thankfully since the release of this show, Honda has increased the luggage size of the top box and it now fits two helmets. Also, this is our first stab at a video podcast - God willing, our future attempts will be a little bit better and a little bit more timely. It was a learning experience. Thanks for watching! Big thanks to American Honda for letting us keep the Gold Wing Tour for way, way too long. Also thanks to Arai Helmets and Sena for sending us some gear - we couldn't have made the show without their help. They found the grizzled prospector's body slumped over a sample of ore on the floor of the rude log cabin he'd been staying in, deep in the wilderness of southern Oregon, late in the spring of 1897. He'd apparently dropped dead one evening while assaying out the samples he'd gathered that day – probably poisoned by some of the chemicals he was using. But this wasn't just any random gold prospector. This badly decomposed body was all that was mortal of the most famous prospector of the American West ‑ and certainly one of the richest and most successful: Ed Schieffelin, the man who discovered and named the Tombstone mine in Arizona. And by the time Ed's body was securely buried under a tall miner's cairn near Tombstone, the hills near that cabin were already alive with eager prospectors following up on the “lost gold mine” legends that sprang up following his death. At least one of those legends is still bringing hopeful prospectors out into the hills of Southern Oregon today.... Hello bozos, Nick and Sarah are back to discuss with you some of the crazy stuff they came across in the week since we last saw you. WWE Wrestlemania is right around the corner and we catch you up on another trip to the Movie Exchange and talk about what we found. Are our cats still coexisting or fighting every chance they get? Nick fell down a rabbit hole with a movie trilogy he let pass him up as a kid and we started rewatching an old show together that we loved from our high school years. Of course we talk about three more trailers from this past week, those being Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Dora and the City of Lost Gold. Our Non-News News covers a little bit of politics and we go down a rabbit hole of people suing some of our favorite fast food establishments. Of course we can't forget about the Google/Facebook bandit from last week and even more fast food fouls. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did recording it. You can email the show for anything at addtherunin@gmail.com. Thanks -Nick/Sarah
