DOUG WHALEY - Doug is sporting a Pitt hat. He was excited for the win despite its ugly nature. Doug said that Cole Holcomb is a good depth signing, but doesn't think he will move the needle. Doug said that Peterson has such a good resume that you "give him a chance to fail." Let him start out as the number 1 corner and see where it goes. Doug said that Peterson was good in zone last year and it would be a dereliction of duty if they don't play to his strengths. DOUG WHALEY - Doug said you shouldn't pay too much attention to which members of the Steelers staff attend which pro-day. He said it's a busy time. The most important thing is that the Steelers have SOME representation. Doug said that sometimes you send representation to a pro day in order to throw other teams off the scent. DOUG WHALEY - Doug says Richardson would be a big gamble w/ the first overall pick. He's a Bryce Young guy. Doug would have Kenny Pickett as the 3rd ranked QB in this draft class. Doug went to Bryce Petty's pro-day and said "I don't see it." They even met w/ him in Buffalo to throw people off the scent. Doug says not to believe anything you read this time of year.

Locked On Baylor - Daily Podcast On Baylor Bears Football & Basketball
As written by today's guest Scotty Swingler: Part of being a preacher is that I preach the Gospel which I've inherited, and not another Gospel. The Apostle Paul had very harsh words in his letters for those who'd preach “another Gospel.” While I may be the guy who came on your show in the spring and said that Gerry Bohanon should be Baylor's starting quarterback in 2022, I now must faithfully preach the Gospel I've inherited, not the Gospel I would've written. I mean, if I can be honest, had I been Jesus, I would've started John the Beloved over Peter at the quarterback position, known in Biblical times as “the rock upon which the Church will be built.” Advanced stats show that John possessed greater accuracy and patience in the pocket than Peter, while also seeing visions and remaining injury-free throughout his career. But Jesus started Peter, the high-ceiling sleeper pick from Galilee whose upside was just too great to deny despite his inconsistency and injury-prone nature. Jesus picked Peter, so that's what I preach; just like Dave picked Blake, and that is what I will now preach. Who's the reigning Big 12 Championship Game MVP? Blake Shapen. In only his second game as Baylor's starting quarterback, was the Most Valuable Player of the Big 12 Championship as selected by the media. Interesting. In both the NFL and CFB, the media is extremely biased towards a particular position group when it comes to major awards, do you know which position that is? Quarterback. In fact, since the Big 12's first season in 1996, a quarterback has won Offensive Player of the Year 17/26 years or 65% of the time. If you look at the winners since 2003, that percentage jumps to 74%! In 1999 the writers liked quarterbacks so much, they gave the award to TWO of them! So in total, 18 quarterbacks have won the award in 26 years. Who did the media pick to win the Big 12 in the preseason poll? That's right, Baylor. Interesting! So the media picks quarterbacks to win Player of the Year nearly 3⁄4 of the time over the last two decades, and that's most often the quarterback on the best team. Apologies to Bijon Robinson, it's just not happening this season. Texas has absolutely no shot. They're going to win 5-7 games as always. Frankly Texas probably SHOULD start Bijon at quarterback... it might turn out better for them than starting Quinn EW-ers, because you know, GROSS, but I digress. In Romans 10:14 Paul writes, “How will they believe if they have not heard?” In other words, how will someone know Jesus if a friend or a preacher doesn't talk about Jesus with them? The Bible of College Football clearly says in Charlie HeBrewer chapter 1, “How will he throw if he have not time?” Your quarterback can't do ANYTHING without the time to throw the ball, AKA, an offensive line. Who possesses the best Big 12 Offensive Line in 2022? Of course, it's Baylor. The Joe Moore semifinalist unit returns 4 of 5 starters and arguably improved at the 5th spot. Shapen is going to have time to put the ball downfield. Now, Blake Shapen is notably a two-sport athlete. Baylor had another notable two-sport athlete at the quarterback position in the not-so-distant past, can you think of who he was? This one's really tough so I'll give you a hint: He bears the same name as his father, AND his grandfather. Robert Griffin III. That's right! RG3 won the Big 12 in the 400 hurdles as a true freshman. So the last time Baylor had a two-sport superstar under center, he won a Heisman trophy. A Heisman! The last time Baylor had a starting quarterback whose name started with a “B” was when? 2014, when Bryce Petty won Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and the Bears won the Big 12, a milestone they did not reach again until Blake Shapen won the Big 12 Championship MVP. I'm out here preaching the good news! Will you only believe?! Blake Shapen. 2022 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Blake Shapen will start for Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears next season — meaning Gerry Bohanon transferring is inevitable. But Bohanon should go down as a Baylor hero, and Shapen is the right move to knight as QB. Will DJ Lagway land at Baylor to play for Dave Aranda and the Bears? John Garcia Jr. of Sports Illustrated says it's not impossible. From Robert Griffin III to Bryce Petty and Seth Russell, Baylor has had Heisman caliber quarterbacks — Lagway could be the next. The five-star quarterback is being recruited by schools like Alabama, Arkansas and Florida. What could get him to Baylor? Well, Aranda is certainly a great selling point — and Lagway's father is too. John also takes listeners through Jadon Porter's commitment to Baylor and how explosive the young four-star can be in the Green and Gold. We also take a trip through Baylor's spring game… and every other team's spring game. Do those really matter for recruiting all that much? They can be the difference between a player committing or curving. The show rounds out with Drake's analysis of Kilgore College commit Dantwan Grimes and what he adds to Scott Drew's basketball program for next season. Despite his ceiling and great potential, Drake makes the argument that Grimes will be hard-pressed to see the floor next season. The future is bright for the young point guard, but next year's team is too stacked to add another player into the rotation. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Bears were handed a tough loss to rival TCU last saturday, but in true Bryce Petty fashion we are now "just ready for OU". Who, like Texas, could be visiting Waco for the last time as a Big 12 opponent. Travis begins this episode discussing the most recent news revolving around the Baylor Football program as Assistant Head Coach Joey McGuire has accepted a position to become the new Texas Tech Head Coach. Travis is impressed with the humility shown by McGuire to stay around the program after Aranda was awarded the Head Coaching position a few years back. Baylor surely wouldn't be the same without Coach McGuire. We then dive into the TCU loss and what went wrong. Travis felt confident leading into the game especially after hearing both Max Duggan and Zach Evans would not be available for the Horned Frogs. But Freshman QB Chandler Morris came out with nothing to lose, and Travis gives him credit for one heck of a game against the stout Baylor defense. Scotty Swingler is then joined by current LA Rams and former Oklahoma Sooner OL Bobby Evans. Bobby discusses his football life and the time he spent playing for Oklahoma. You don't want to miss this one! Travis puts the finishing touches on this episode discussing Baylor's chances this weekend and why he thinks this will come down to mainly the QB play for both sides. An exciting weekend looms as Fox Big Noon Kickoff makes its way to Waco Texas for the first time. We all remember what happened last time the Sooners visited Waco for a nationally televised game. Let's hope the outcome is a little different this weekend. Sic 'em JOIN THE BANTER: Follow @PleaseBearW_Me on Twitter and Please Bear With Me on Facebook. Trevor Knight and Bryce Petty sit down with Grant to discuss how their life has changed after football and give their opinions on the new NIL rules.
Baylor bounced back with an absolute shellacking (and yes I looked up how to spell that) of the West Virginia Mountaineers 45-20. In what most people expected to be a defensive battle, the Bears' came out and had their best offensive performance of the year. This episode begins with Travis' recap of the WVU game and how the Mountaineers were fortunate to eclipse 20 points. Most of their points came from either a tipped ball or the Baylor defense making mental mistakes... penalties. The Bears did a good job of lowering the total number of penalties, but they came at crucial moments of the game. Travis then welcomes back-to-back Big 12 Champion Quarterback Bryce Petty to bear with us. Bryce gives us his view of the team so far as well as dives into a breakdown of Gerry Bohanon's performance to this point in the year. We also get to hear Bryce's unique experience of playing the last game in Floyd Casey and the first game in McLane Stadium. Plus much more. Bryce will also give us his thoughts on the BYU matchup before Travis gets into the Bear Necessities for the week. Nothing too special, he only has one this week, but it's an important one. Come get ready as Baylor welcomes another ranked opponent into McLane Stadium. We all remember what happened the last time a ranked opponent visited. They did not like the outcome. Sic 'em! By the standards of a May weekday, Tuesday was pretty eventful for the Jets. The team turned the page from a big mistake. Quarterback Christian Hackenberg was traded to the Oakland Raiders for a conditional seventh round pick. The writing has been on the wall for Hackenberg since last summer when he failed to win the starting quarterback job in preseason. Instead, his play was so poor that he lost the backup job to Bryce Petty. On day one of OTAs, Hackenberg saw minimal practice time and then made some comments to the press some viewed as critical of the coaching staff. The trade came just hours later. In other news, the Jets did kick off their OTAs on Tuesday. We all would be wise to avoid drawing too many sweeping conclusions from one practice. The best news of the day was probably that Teddy Bridgewater was moving around on the field well as he tries to get his career back on track after a major knee injury. These are the topics of today's podcast. I have no Sam Darnold for you on today's podcast. Today's show has only me, and the discussion is about depth. I offer three positions where I like the depth the Jets have. Before we start, I do need to clarify what I mean by depth. There are very few position groups for any team in the NFL where the backups are proven, quality players. That just doesn't happen in today's NFL with limited practice time to develop fringe players and a salary cap, which makes it difficult to retain proven guys who do not start. When I talk about depth, I am partially talking about upside. At which spots do the Jets have a combination of proven players and reserves who have upside? I understand it gets a bit subjective there since upside is generally in the eye of the beholder. I think we still genuinely know upside when we see it. A quarterback group with Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty doesn't have a whole lot of upside. A quarterback group with Sam Darnold and Teddy Bridgewater does. The positions I discuss on today's show are quarterback, wide receiver, and defensive line. Learn more about your ad choices. In this Episode the @3YardsPerCarry (Chris, Alf & Simon) guys talk about the acquisition of Akeem Spence, and Bryce Petty. Then spend the rest of the time analyzing Miami Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross' comments which appeared on a Ben Volin (Boston Globe) column, that was later confirmed by Miami Herald Columnist Armando Salguero. Needless to say, the guys go in depth into everything that was said, and implied.
The Jets made a franchise altering selection last Thursday night when they used the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to grab Sam Darnold. On today's podcast I early thoughts on some the biggest ticket questions and issues surrounding Darnold. Should he be thrown into the starting lineup immediately? Would the Jets' coaching staff trust a young quarterback so early? Is Teddy Bridgewater actually one of the biggest losers from the Jets picking Darnold? Should the Jets cut Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg immediately? Do the Jets now have the best long-term outlook at quarterback in the AFC East?I offer my answers to these questions on today's show. Learn more about your ad choices. The Jets lost once again on Sunday. The Los Angeles Chargers handed the Jets a 14-7 defeat at MetLife Stadium. Today we look back at the game on the podcast. In many instances, the quarterback gets too much credit when the team wins and takes too much blame when the team loses. That has not been the case for the Jets the last two weeks. Bryce Petty's play has been extremely ineffective. The young quarterback was the primary culprit in last week's loss to the Saints, and things did not get any better against the Chargers. The fact he has been training for three years, and this is the best the Jets can get feels like a very bad sign. We discuss it on today's show along with some of the other performances of note from the loss. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Jets will be home for the postseason. There is now no doubt. Heading into Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints, the Playoffs were a long shot, but there was at least a slight chance. That is now gone. New York was officially eliminated in a 31-19 loss to the Saints. For the seventh straight season, there will be no Playoffs for the Jets.On today's podcast we talk about the game. In many weeks the quarterback gets too much credit when the team wins and takes too much blame when the team loses. This is not one of those weeks. Bryce Petty was not up to the task of starting for the Jets as the team was unable to come through in a winnable game.In addition to talking about the game, we also provide some thoughts on another season without Playoffs. The Jets have now missed the postseason seven straight times. Is there any light at the end of the tunnel. We also have to address the crazy finish to yesterday's game in Pittsburgh. We are mixing things up a bit this week. Instead of doing our normal Thursday mailbag podcast, we are bumping it up to Wednesday. Thank you to everybody who submitted questions. We couldn't do it without you. Sorry to those of you whose questions we missed. We couldn't get to everybody. Feel free to send your question again next week.Today we look at how Todd Bowles should be evaluated over the last three games of the season, what changes might be in store for the offense with Bryce Petty playing quarterback, how much a new center might upgrade the offensive line, whether the Jets could trade Brian Winters in the offseason, whether Muhammad Wilkerson is still needed, and whether the Jets should look at big name coaches if any hit the market this offseason even if they are happy with Todd Bowles' 2017 performance. In some ways, the Jets stepped into a new era on Monday. Quarterback Josh McCown was officially ruled out for the season with a broken hand, which means Bryce Petty becomes the starter. This especially turns the spotlight on offensive coordinator John Morton. Morton has had a nice honeymoon with the Jets in his first season. Given very low expectations before the season, Morton has guided an offense that has looked competent for the most part. One year of competent offense with a veteran quarterback is not what makes the career of offensive coordinators, though. What makes (or breaks) careers is the ability to develop a young quarterback. Morton's test begins this Sunday, and it likely will continue into next season with the likely upcoming drafting of a quarterback. That is the topic of today's podcast.
