Join Bryan Hayes, Jeff O'Neill and Jamie McLennan for Hour 1 on OverDrive! The guys preview the Maple Leafs and Kings' matchup, the Oilers getting their first victory of the season, the Canucks' struggles to begin the season, O-Dog's statistics and his performance compared to the game in the NHL. They also recount on the famous fights between Wendel Clark and Jon Casey, Matthew Barnaby and Garth Snow's battle and the Yankees' series lead against the Guardians in the ALCS.
Ray Ferraro and Darren Dreger discuss key moments from the Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs preseason game, [4:00] particularly Cedric Pare's controversial hit on Patrik Laine. They debate whether the hit was malicious or simply mistimed, setting the tone for a deeper dive into player safety and league discipline. At [12:00], Ray and Dregs focus on the fight between Arber Xhekaj and Pare, sparked by the earlier hit, comparing it to infamous incidents like the Todd Bertuzzi-Steve Moore case. They discuss whether Xhekaj deserved a suspension and how George Parros, head of the NHL's Department of Player Safety, may have weighed in, given his own playing history. The conversation then shifts at [18:00] to the prevalence of preseason injuries, with examples like Patrik Laine and Drew Doughty sidelined. Ray questions whether the NHL preseason needs to be shortened to protect star players, especially as teams try to balance preparation with avoiding injuries. The episode's feature interview begins at [32:00] with former Islanders GM Garth Snow. Snow discusses his life after management, coaching his sons' hockey teams, and his rapid transition from NHL player to general manager. He offers a candid look at the challenges he faced running the Islanders, particularly during the financial difficulties and arena issues on Long Island. Snow shares fascinating insights on the evolution of goaltending at [44:00], reflecting on the trend of bigger goalies and some of the equipment tricks he used during his career to maximize coverage in net.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all of our incredible listeners! In the spirit of giving (and taking some deserved time off, as we hope all you shit-kickers are) we decided to do TWO Best-Of episodes. This week's episode will be audio only, but next week we will be back on video too. On part 1, we pull just a handful of our favorite moments from 2023, including one of our highest-rated interviews, Patrik Berglund, on going to Buffalo against his wishes, Matthew Tkachuk talking about his insane playoff run, Garth Snow being very open on Tavares leaving, Pierre Dorion breaking down the Erik Karlsson and Jacob Chychrun trades, the incredibly candid and most-listened-to interview with J.T. Miller, and so much more. We hope you enjoy this episode as well as your Christmas and New Year
On this episode the boys are joined by former New York Islanders GM and former NHL goalie Garth Snow. Besides having one of the more memorable names in hockey, Snow played over 350 games in the show and has the stories to prove it. He played with the likes of Messier, Hextall, Jagr, Lemieux, and many more. We get into some of his best stories of playing with those legends, the huge Tavares situation, what happened with Josh Ho-Sang and much more. Before the interview the boys get into the Matthews and Hagel contracts, the insane idea that Bedard should be captain, who interrupts who the most and much more. As the Founder and President of Simbiotrek (sim-bē-ˈä-ˈtrek), Sean Kennedy wears many hats. Sean's roles include: transformation strategist and catalyst fractional COO for small- and medium-sized businesses small business peer advisory board coordinator and chair Sean works with entrepreneurs and business owners to unlock the potential trapped by the structure and capacity of their current business organization, and to build beautiful businesses together. Sean has 20+ years of experience in software development. He's primarily concerned with Agile and Lean software, of which he is a practitioner, coach, strategist, and digital transformation leader. We delve into Sean's role in “digital transformation” and much more. Sean's clients range from: Multinationals to startups In the Americas to over in Europe and Asia Within the aerospace and automotive industry to industrial automation and insurance into health care, retail, technology, and telecommunications…he runs the gamut. Tom Woods #TomWoods100 TomWoods.com TomSchoolofLife.com My goal is to get at least 100 people within the Tom Woods orbit on this show. We are building steady. Sean is the 5th person within Tom's orbit to come on the pod… First, if you don't know who Tom Woods is, you've probably been living under a rock, but Tom is a benefactor of mankind…and to my intelligence level. Check out TomWoods.com for a firehose worth of great content and then work your way to TomSchoolofLife.com. We need to keep the momentum going for this #TomWoods100 series. (And I apologize to Tom if I hijacked a hashtag he wanted &/or needed for another project…but I don't think so.) The point is—The O'Leary Review provides a platform for serious people to get the word out on what they are doing to make this world better. Also— our mission is to fight back against the crazy in this world. It exists all around us and we must eliminate it. How I met Sean. I met Sean a few weeks back when he facilitated an accountability group within the Tom Woods School of Life that I am a part of. “Blah blah blah…Austrian Economics…blah blah blah… I know nothing about that stuff.” Well, you should find out. And we provide a platform here—at least on the last few shows—where you can now jump on the Austrian train with relative ease. Over the last few podcasts, we've talked a bit about Austrian Economics and have provided resources in the various show notes. The following talk, however, is also worth your time if you have any inkling to discover more about why one should pursue Austrian Economics in even its basic forms. You'll likely discover that economics is indeed a field worth studying or exploring. “The Attractiveness of Austrian Economics” by Tom Woods from July of 2013. https://youtu.be/DStLhWMRERM More About Sean Lives in the Raleigh-Durham area after moving down from Toronto. Simbiotrek's office is in “Wake Forest.” Wake Forest, the town, is in the Raleigh-Durham area, also called the Research Triangle…not—as I found out doing a little cursory research—near Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. About a 2-hour car ride away! Notable son of Wake Forest: Bryce Love, former Stanford running back who had a phenomenal junior season at The Farm (Doak Walker Award, Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year, Unanimous All-American, etc.). Attended Wake Forest-Rolesville High School. Love had one great college season after backing up Christian McCaffrey for two seasons then got hurt his senior year, playing off-and-on. Got hurt again—ACL tear—in his final college game, but was eventually drafted by the Washington Redskins, yet dealt with more injury trouble and never ultimately played a regular season game in the NFL. Great ballplayer. Sean's early days were spent in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Kitchener, Ontario, however, and not in the Research Triangle. Sean's rooting interest in the CFL is for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. https://www.bluebombers.com/ A couple of other famous sons of Kitchener, Ontario: Lennox Lewis Former Heavyweight Champion of the World. Last heavyweight to hold the undisputed championship. Moved to Kitchener at the age of 12. 1988 Gold medal winner at the Seoul Olympics (representing Canada). Jamal Murray Utah Jazz guard. Currently recovering from a devastating ACL tear that caused him to miss the entire 2021-22 NBA season. Interestingly, Murray's father, Roger, competed in basketball against Lennox Lewis when they were younger and before Lewis started his boxing career. Roger also coached Jamal for a season at Orangeville Prep prior to the younger Murray going on to Kentucky to play for the Wildcats and coach John Calipari in the 2015-16 season. Murray's 20.0 scoring average is the highest for any freshman in program history and the highest single-season average for any player under Calipari in his time in Lexington. .... I am still trying to research the Canadian high school football rules Sean played under during his prep days and why it became a such a strange mashup of the Canadian and the American gridiron codes. Wikipedia has a “Comparison of American and Canadian Football,” but it does not do justice to what we were talking about in this episode. But, if you are not familiar with the code of Canadian football, but know the American code well enough—or vice-versa—this examination is a good start… ... Game mentioned: 100th Grey Cup November 25, 2012 at SkyDome/Rogers Centre in Toronto. He teaches lessons on how coaching translates to the business world. It struck me when Sean mentioned Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour was watching this tournament. I think it was 10U or 11U. One of Brind'Amour's sons was playing in the same tournament. It stood out because Brind'Amour was one of my favorite hockey players in the 1990s. I've never been a big Flyers fan, but I really liked his Flyers team of that era, where he was the second-line centre. Eric Lindros led the “Legion of Doom” line with John LeClair and Mikael Renberg as wingers. I almost exclusively used the Flyers when I played NHL96 on my computer…and I did that a lot at one stage of my life. In real life, that Flyers club made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1997 but were eventually swept by the Red Wings (who won the Cup for the first time in 42 years). In that video game, it was hard to choose which future NHL general manager to put in goal for Philly: Ron Hextall or Garth Snow. Coach Terry Murray had a similar problem…both were good tenders. Rod Brind'Amour https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/b/brindro01.html Brind'Amour is now the coach for the Carolina franchise. It surprised me when I looked up his stats that he played for Carolina for so long, too. Ten seasons for the Canes to 7 as a Flyer. “Rod Brind'Amour” is also one of the great names in sports. Host Rob Zimmerman welcomes former New York Rangers forward Matt Barnaby. Matt started things off talking about his infamous fight with Garth Snow back in 1996 when he was with the Sabres and Snow was with the Flyers, and talked about fighting in the NHL and it's place in the game. Matt also talked about some of the tough guys he had to face during his career, his agitating style of play during his NHL career, and some of the things he tried to do as a player to help his team win games. Matt also recalled the time he had to drop the gloves with his good friend and former Sabres teammate Rob Ray. Later Matt reflected on growing up playing hockey in Canada and what it was like going from playing in high school to junior hockey in Canada. When he felt his game as an agitator began to show itself and he realized his best chance to continue his hockey career was to carve his niche as player that could get under the skin of his opponent and how that toughness helped bring him space on the ice. Matt talked about speed of the college game and how immense the talent is in the NHL, as well as the size and speed of the players in the NHL. The expectations of early round NHL players compared to other professional leagues, and how he feels Rangers #1 overall pick Alexis Lafrenière could fare in the years ahead. Matt also talked about some of the challenges European players have to face compared to players from North America. Matt discussed the current Rangers team and their head coach Dan Quinn, and the expectations of the team heading into the season. Matt also talked about the slow start for Mika Zibanejad, and the differences in the NHL this year with the effect Covid has had on the schedule this season. Matt also weighed in a bit on the crosstown Islanders and what he thinks the team can do this season and in the coming years- as well as who he sees making some noise in the NHL playoffs this season. Matt spoke about his time playing in Buffalo for the Sabres, and the differences between some of the other cities in the NHL he played in, including Pittsburgh and for the Rangers in New York city, where he played on a line for a time with Mark Messier. Matt closed things out talking a bit about hazing in the game, before discussing a bit about what he is up to today, including his involvement with https://www.bet99.com/en/sport-betting#/prelive (Bet99), the https://matthewbarnaby36.com (Matthew Barnaby Unfiltered podcast), watching his son playing professional hockey, what he thinks it takes to make it to the National Hockey League today and where he sees the league headed in the future. About Matt Barnaby Drafted by the Buffalo Sabres 83rd overall in the fourth round in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, Barnnaby spent four seasons in the QMJHL with the Beauport Harfangs, Verdun Collège Français and Victoriaville Tigres, leading the league in penalty minutes in consecutive seasons in '92 and '93. After completing his QMJHL career with the Tigres, Barnaby joined the Sabres for the end of 1992–93 season. Barnaby was generally considered a pest and agitator and spent the next few seasons playing between the Sabres and AHL affiliate the Rochester Americans. Barnaby established a full-time role with the Sabres in the 1995-96 recording a career-high in penalty minutes with 335. He was frequently involved in on-ice altercations and among other incidents he made headlines in 1996, when in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers after a few hits and Barnaby lying on the ice presumably injured, a brawl between the two teams started. With the brawl in full motion, Barnaby jumped to his skates to punish Garth Snow, goaltender of the Flyers, who was poking Barnaby with his stick while the officials weren't looking. Arthur answers listener questions about how the possibility of the NHL Draft taking place in early June would effect the Isles’ offseason plans, including their salary cap heading into next season, if there’s something rotten in Bridgeport with Sebastian Aho and Linus Soderstrom reportedly unhappy there, Ilya Sorokin’s contract situation, Adam Pelech’s availability if the season restarts this summer, player salary rollbacks impacting ticket prices next season, the possibility of compliance buyouts this offseason, potential compensatory draft picks for rental players, Garth Snow’s whereabouts, stockpiling prospects as opposed to being in win-now mode, and whether New York-area players have more hesitation about restarting the season.Save 40% on an annual subscription to The Athletic when you visit http://theathletic.com/nosleeptilbelmont
There is a 5th dimension, beyond the one that is known to you. It is as vast as Garth Snow's shoulder pads and as timeless as a Bobby Clarke toothless grin. It is the middle ground between orange and black, between Corsi and shooooot, and it lies between the pit that Gritty arose from, and the center ice tickets. This is the dimension of ridiculousness. It is an area that we call, Flyperbole. In short, Steve and Craig play "What If" with the pivotal moments from the last decade of Flyers hockey as the quarantine continues. The Culture Club No - not the Boy George led band of the 1980's and not even the awesome Club in Downtown Manhattan that bares the same name. We are talking about the culture club WITHIN the New York Islanders. Let's take it back a few months here. Clean out Day, April 9th 2018 - An unshaven and honestly disheveled looking Garth Snow feebly addresses the media, Doug Weight, with a sour look on his face attempts to do the same. Jon Ledecky reads, angrily - from a pre-written letter claiming that ownership and the team has let fans down. This is months following a billboard that was erected in Brooklyn, begging for the GM to be fired. It was just awkward, and honestly pretty confusing. It turns out, both Snow and Weight were lame ducks at that table that day in April. Things would eventually progress pretty rapidly afterwards - Lou Lamoriello wouldn't be extended in Toronto. He winds up on Long Island, is named President of Hockey Operations and is given full autonomy by ownership. Stop the presses! Autonomy! What's that? Well, we would come to find out for sure. Lou started doing Lou type things. Leaks, they stopped. The culture, well he took it straight on and in one swoop - out with the old. It's what he does, right? Garth Snow and Doug Weight were removed as General Manager and Head Coach in the same afternoon on June 9th. Just like that, he ripped the bandaid off when nobody was even looking. As we move forward, Lou stated he was going to hire "the best coach available" and all signs were pointing to coaches without jobs - nobody expected a coach playing for and ultimately winning the Stanley Cup to reach a contract impasse with his team, the Washington Capitals, right? No, I didn't - you didn't, but Lou probably knew something and Barry Trotz was signed to a contract with the Islanders on June 21st. Just like that - the culture tide was changing. Lou would then go and add Steve Pellegrini, formerly of the New Jersey Devils as Assistant GM. Fire assistants Greg Cronin, Kelly Buchberger, and Luke Richardson - all Weight's guys. Curiously he would leave the Bridgeport staff as untouched.... Hire long time Trotz Assistant Lane Lambert as well as John Gruden (who's story is extremely interesting and worth a read, too). And then, they would let go of Goaltending coach - Fred Brathwaite in order to hire former Toronto Marlies tendy coach - Piero Greco, and following that up with the goalie whisperer in Mitch Korn as Director of Goaltending. Keep in mind both of these goalie guys are fresh off winning their leagues respective championships. So, to summarize - Every losing coach was canned and they brought in proven winners. Even Gruden has won at the levels he's coached. We have Trotz and Lambert that will install their own systems and evaluate talent. We have Greco who will work with Robin Lehner and Thomas Greiss and without a doubt work better numbers into their play. Gruden will work magic with the kids, or at least I assume that's the hope. In these sweeping changes, Lou Lamoriello has installed a system of accountability, proffessionalism and respect that the Islanders as an organization have not seen in a really long time. What they can do with the roster they have obviously remains to be seen, but the things coming out of the players mouths at this point have been really positive. It makes for exciting offseason talk, at the very least. I also took some Twitter questions for the podcast - just to try to involve some of you fine folks in the discussions. Let's take a look! Prepping for Episode One of The Isles Faithful Podcast @faithfulisles - let's hear some questions and I'll read your tweets on the show. #isles #islestwitter #hockeypodcast @nyislanders — Michael Schuerlein (@islesblogger) July 25, 2018 Hope you all enjoyed Episode Two!

HabsFan vs. LeafsFan - Season 2, Episode 26.HvL is Kamal Rehman (HabsFan) and Ari Shapiro (LeafsFan)Kyle Dubas & Lou Lamoriello at the Loo. (0:00)In what has been called the greatest exchange of ideas and thoughts since Garth Snow bumped into Charles Wang and convinced him to lead an NHL franchise without any experience whatsoever, HvL is proud to bring you a catastrophic invasion of privacy in the form of an audio conversation between the minds that have shaped and influenced the future of the franchise; a candid, no holds-barred conversation inside the MLSE executive restrooms.HvL SportsDesk (4:12)Rehman & Shapiro cover everything under the sun in this week's edition of the HvL SportsDesk, including a closer look at why tanking is essential for the Habs, why Kasperi Kapanen will leave you breathless and wanting more, and why Evgeni Malkin is the most under-rated player in any professional sport ever.HvL Banter (8:39)Our banter segment returns with a furious vengeance that find Kamal and Ari bickering on a number of hockey issues while finding themselves at polar opposites when it comes to the future of their respective teams. One man is clearly thrilled; the other waits for a shoe to drop.LeafsFan Rant (17:39)Shapiro delves into the prospect of facing the Boston Bruins or Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of this year's playoffs and literally goes insane thinking of the possibilities. You haven't heard this much bluster since the last time he ranted about anything good in this world.HabsFan Rant (19:05)In what is clearly his magnum opus on tanking, Rehman delivers a stunningly worthwhile diatribe on why Carey Price may cost his team a shot at Rasmus Dahlin. RTU Show Rundown - 2/1/18 A Block Yes, the Super Bowl is in 3 days... but we have something else on our minds. The GM's in NY, specifically those helming the Mets, Jets and Islanders. Are they ever accountable? What should a fan's expectation for transparecny be? When is a GM too arrogant? We'll get into Alderson, Maccagnan and Garth Snow as well as talk about what it takes to be successful as a modern GM in NYC. B Block The Super Bowl... sure, we'll talk about it a little bit. Why not? C Block (aka the "Apologies to Lindsey Buckingham" block) The Islanders and Rangers: a tale of two seasons, both shitty. Plus, Kirk Cousins to the Jets RQ. THE FUNLOAD™ (a fun, non sports related unload, as led by Bishop PJ): Bishop Pop Culture PJ is off this week, as apparently the last 4 months weren't sufficient off time for him. He'll be back next week, probably talking about his old pal, Oscar™

There is no mincing words to the unmitigated mess from October until January. Yet they almost made it to the playoffs once they finally cut away one disease eating away the team in the coach who didn't fit the team makeup. However, is the patient still in trouble? We will look at the good, bad and ugly of Garth Snow's miscues and mistakes, and make sense of it all. With Weight as coach and Snow still onboard... is there any positives down the line? We have the tonic to the uneasiness. Is it all sunshine and lollipops? No. But it won't be all doom and gloom either. So step away from the emotional disappointment which we all have or are going through, bury this past season, and let's take a good look at what it all means. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/topshelfhockey/support

Two weeks ago, I said, while with big injuries, if they can stay at .500, it would be a big success. It would allow them to heal up and get ready for the next lap of the season. Lo and behold, this is where they have been with an OT loss to Vancouver, a win versus Ottawa, a loss against Detroit and a postponement against the Flyers. Two big injuries and got 3 points in 3 games. Hamonic is back, Boychuk will be too after all star break So what's next... More misery from fans? Surely. Lots of hope of rescue in a trade deadline miracle? Don't hold your breathe. What is needed is for players not performing as they did last year to get on track or ramp up.
