Major George Petrie served in the U.S. Army Special Forces in Vietnam. He was a member of MACV-SOG, and was the first soldier to hit the ground during the Son Tay Raid. MACV or “Military Assistance Command, Vietnam”, was a highly classified, multi-service special operations unit consisting in part of US Army Special Forces, Navy SEALs, and CIA personnel in Vietnam. SOG, or “Studies and Observations Group”, was a subcomponent of MACV that provided on the ground intelligence to and conducted operations, including reconnaissance missions, evacuations, prisoner captures, and much more from control sites across Vietnam. In this interview, Petrie recounts Operation Ivory Coast (Son Tay Raid), a significant POW rescue operation. Petrie also served in Panama and the Dominican Republic.
James McCloden, Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV) outreach coordinator joins Dave to talk about veteran needs and how his organization provides assistance.

In this episode I look at the American Army in South Vietnam in 1965 as it builds up its resources in the country and begins to fight the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army. I shall deal with how the American Army is organised from the command of MACV down to the battalion and company. I deal with some of the weapon of the American Army and look at the Huey helicopter.
A profile of American Secretary of Defence Robert Mac Namara. The gap between the positive view of how the war was going by General Harkins and MACV using doubtful data and that far less rosy view presented by journalists and junior Army officers who had served in South Vietnam and who witnessed the growth of the Viet Cong revolt in the countryside.
Members of today's US Special Operations Forces are often regarded as heroes, but there are those that today's elite operators look up to and regard as their own heroes. John Stryker “Tilt” Meyer is one of those men! As a member of the clandestine MAC-V SOG operating in the midst of the Vietnam War, Tilt recounts his combat experiences, some very close calls, and how close partnership with indigenous forces along with coordinated joint operations lead to successful missions in places where American troops “officially” never were. In this episode of the Glorious Professionals Podcast, Rich gets his turn in the hot seat. You've heard Rich's voice on the previous two podcasts interviewing Jason and Emily, and GORUCK Nation might know him from the MACV-1 Introduction and his return to Vietnam video series. Rich has had a very storied career and shares his tales with humor and knowledge born of reflection - so much so that after an hour and a half of incredible conversation we barely got out of Vietnam. He not only tells some great war stories but talks about how he processes them and about the power and importance of tribal mentorship and that storytelling to keep him alive. In the wake of Ken Burns’ most recent series, The Vietnam War, America’s fascination with the conflict shows no sign of abating. Fortunately the flood of popular retellings of old narratives is supplemented by a number of well-researched and reasoned efforts aimed at garnering a better sense of how our presumptions about the Vietnam War are in need of reinterpretation and revision. Returning to New Books in Military History is historian Gregory A. Daddis, author of two recent accounts of the war that together offer a sharp reassessment of the American effort. In Westmoreland’s War: Reassessing America’s Strategy in Vietnam (Oxford University Press, 2014) and Withdrawal: Reassessing America’s Final Years in Vietnam (Oxford University Press, 2017) Daddis challenges many existing perceptions of the readiness and roles of MACV’s two most prominent commanders, Generals William Westmoreland and Creighton Abrams, as well as their struggles with the Washington defense establishment during the war. By centering his study on the strategic planning and its execution, Daddis not only acknowledges the centrality of Vietnamese agency in the outcome of the war, he also reveals how some historians have misjudged the war’s outcome to present flawed visions of possible victory.
