Beacon memorial opened in 1924 after close vote During World War II, 1,704 Beacon residents, about 14 percent of the population, served in the Armed Forces. At least 67 men died, and many survivors suffered physical and mental disabilities. Now, Vietnam vets are the old-timers at the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts inside the Veterans Memorial Building at the intersection of Main and Teller. This year marks the structure's centennial. Beacon built the edifice for the VFW and the Legion after a referendum authorized the city to spend $60,000 (about $1.1 million today) by a 317-310 margin, according to the Beacon Historical Society. American City magazine claimed it to be the nation's most expensive war memorial at the time. Residents packed the plaza for the opening on Memorial Day in 1924. That same year, the Elks christened its lodge and the U.S. government opened the Castle Point VA Medical Center to treat tuberculosis patients. Beacon donated the Memorial Building to the Legion and VFW; for the veterans, the only overhead is maintenance and repairs. The organizations derive a good chunk of revenue by renting out the hall. "You won't see many arrangements like this - we're a rare bird," says Harold Delamater, commander of the Private William B. Wilson Post 666 of the VFW, named for the first city resident to die in World War I. Delamater, the man with the keys, is a retired police officer who served in Vietnam. "Beacon has always taken care of its veterans; it's just been like that," he says. He says that Beacon battled the vets in the late 1990s to move its detective bureau into the building. For a while, officers occupied the second floor. The metal rings to which they handcuffed detainees still dangle from the wall. Some rooms are museum-like, with artifacts scattered about, such as a book of meeting minutes from the 1880s for the Grand Army of the Republic, the nation's first large-scale veterans' organization, created by Union soldiers and sailors after the Civil War. The local post met at what is now the Howland Cultural Center. Thanks to a grant from Dutchess County, the Memorial Building is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The plaza, which includes three monuments to fallen combatants, looks spiffy and the abundant vegetation is cared for. In addition to the Legion (85 members) and the VFW (53), the Marine Corps League (62) and the Nam Knights Motorcycle Club (15) also gather there. Two years ago, Guardian Revival, a mental health organization geared toward Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan war vets, moved into the building, fixing up the attic and turning a moribund room into an office. In addition to hosting Tuesday night jam sessions, Guardian Revival lends dogs to veterans, offers peer support and takes first responders on outdoor adventures. Of course, there's a bar, behind an unmarked door. Though the serving area could have been teleported from the 1960s, the modern kitchen shines. Beer fills the refrigerator and fuels stories. "Between us and Guardian Revival, it's a completely different way of coping," says Delamater. "They don't come down and have a couple of beers with the old guys. Each generation handles it their own way."

In today's podcast we honor our veterans and in the president's messages to veterans, we'll cover peace through strength. Going through our archives, Citizen, Governor and President Reagan delivered many addresses saluting those who serve our country. Today we've chosen two – the first he delivered in August 1980 to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The theme was Peace because, in candidate Ronald Reagan's view, Peace was the first purpose of American foreign policy. So in saluting the sacrifices made by veterans, President Reagan stresses that to protect these men and find a path toward peace, we must focus on peace through strength. He covers why he thinks American foreign policy has been working against peace and how that trend could be reversed. In the second half of the podcast, we'll hear when he addressed the American people in honor of Veterans Day 40 years ago in 1983. Of course, this address was focused on the veterans of both the Grenada and Beirut operations.

SERIES 3 EPISODE 10: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: First he held a news conference where the reporters didn't have microphones. Then he held a news conference where the reporters basically didn't get to ask questions. What's next? A Trump News Conference without Trump? Sounds like a good idea. Incredibly, CNN ran the whole nonsensical non-news conference rant live. As somebody who was hired by CNN as its first year ended in 1981 I have a secret for them – the acronym stands for “Cable NEWS Network.” You're no longer news. Cut to a test pattern, fire everybody, and start from scratch. Which also applies to Trump's running mate. I'm beginning to think J.D. Vance is actually a Democratic plant. New Kensington, Pennsylvania. At VFW Post 92. That's Veterans of Foreign Wars, the post number is 92, and there is still the Sarah Palin rule. Vance called it "VFA," forgot the number, had to fish into his pocket for a card that had the number written on it, and forgot the Palin rule (if you're an idiot running for Vice President, and you have to remember something, just write it on your hand). There are more polls and Kamalapalooza continues. She's pulled off a nine-point swing in Pennsylvania and a ten-point swing nationally. So naturally Politico led with 28 paragraphs on Vivek Ramaswamy insisting Trump was listening to his advice to focus on the issues and not attack her. This is while the Republican campaign is imploding so quickly that now Frank Luntz is wondering if Trump is trying to lose. And as the Trump campaign continues to try to insist it has nothing to do with Project 2025, Media Matters uncovers the implausible. There's a Project 2025 training video starring Karoline Leavitt, who is now Trump's Campaign spokesperson. As the video ends she tells Project 2025 trainees that if they need any help to just contact her. B-Block (23:57) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Republican House Candidate accused, as a cop, of handcuffing an infant. RFK Junior hires somebody to program political ads to you based on data on your phone. And baseball's new low: the Mets' ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by the Hawk Tuah woman. I presume she threw a spitball. C-Block (33:10) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: It's got everything: Suspense, Baseball, Red Barber, a story that was turned into a movie with Peter Sellers. It's "The Catbird Set."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He is the author of Inside the Red Zone: A Veteran for Peace Reports from Iraq.Veterans for Peace, listeners, might provoke you to say—well, why is there another veterans organization needed? Doesn't the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars fit the bill? Well, as other listeners know, those two gigantic groups have been very closely aligned with the Pentagon, they don't seem to ever see a war or an armed incursion that they don't like from the U.S. Empire.Ralph NaderEvery conflict is going to wind up ending at some point with talks and negotiations. And it's a question of—how many people do you want to kill and wound, and how much suffering do you want to cause, before you say enough and sit down at the table? That happens in every war. Mike FernerIt's not like we've got some kind of democracy, and our national policy reflects what people want to do. It's that the people who are running the show from the arms industries and so forth, they're the ones that make the political contributions, they're the ones that make the money. And those are the ones that we hold up as the mad men arsonists who are running around the world setting fires left and right. And we're running around with a bucket brigade trying to stop them. So unfortunately they've got the upper hand, but Veterans for Peace and other parts of the peace movement are doing everything that we can to change that.Mike FernerLeonard Goodman is a Chicago criminal defense lawyer, an adjunct professor of law at DePaul University College of Law, where he teaches Federal Criminal Law, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University College of Law. He also founded the Leonard C. Goodman Institute for Investigative Reporting, which provides editorial and financial support to independent journalists pursuing in-depth investigative projects.[Penny Hess, Omali Yeshitela, and Jesse Nevel's] homes were raided, and they're now under federal indictment, facing up to 15 years in prison with absolutely no notice, no letter being sent saying, "Hey, we think because you went to Moscow that you need to register." Nothing. So what you talk about is a two-tiered justice system.Leonard Goodman Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

One of the greatest challenges for the All Volunteer Force is how to reintegrate a professional, volunteer military back into civilian society.  For many previous generations, this re-integration was supported by veterans organizations, like the Veterans of Foreign Wars, which created a space for veterans to share experiences as they re-started their civilian life.  However, the post 9/11 veteran generation has new challenges both in re-connecting with civilian life and in creating bonds between post 9/11 veterans that create positive societal impacts.  The rise of social media as well as the diversity and the volunteer nature of this generation means that Vietnam-era structures and institutions designed for veterans may not work for building social bonds between 9/11 veterans and their communities.  How does the post 9/11 veteran build social capital among each other?  How do they connect with their communities?  How can the post 9/11 veteran experience build social cohesion not only between veterans and civilians but also in the broader civil society?   Tuesday, February 20, 2024 – Denver, CO Featuring Gil Barndollar | Senior Research Fellow, Center for the Study of Statesmanship; USMC veteran Matthew Brown | Hoover Veteran Fellow; President and CEO, Chimney Trail; USN Veteran Claudia Flores | Hoover Veteran Fellow; Policy and Planning Director, Virginia Department of Veteran Services; USN Veteran Robin Johnson | CEO, Best Medicine Brigade; President, HEAL*ARIOUS; USA veteran Moderated by Dr. Jacquelyn Schneider | Hoover Fellow, post-9/11 Veteran, USAFR

According to journalist Matthew Petti's number crunching, 31% of English-speaking media have been using the phrase "Hamas-led Health Ministry" since Oct. 17. Before that day, only 7% were using such a phrase. What happened? Petti points to the Oct. 17 explosion at the Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza, the perpetrator of which has not been independently confirmed. He said civilian casualty counts were not only second-guessed by the Biden administration but questioned because the ministry was "Hamas run." Repeating this led to the Western media pick-up of the phrase. Not only does linking the ministry and its data to the militant group delegitimize both, it serves a broader insidious narrative that Gazans and Palestinians are Hamas, which serves Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's interests in justifying the relentless bombing of civilians. Petti talks to Kelley and Daniel about this and the broader responsibility of the Western media in the coverage and interpretation of these complex issues on the ground today.More from Matt Petti:Media amplified US, Israeli narrative on Palestinian deaths, Responsible Statecraft, 11/20/23The international pressure on Israel that really matters comes from the Middle East, Analyst News, 10/19/23Why does Egypt fear evacuating Gaza? Responsible Statecraft, 10/13/23America's Broken, Lurid View of Foreign Wars, Reason magazine, 10/12/23 This is a public episode. The Cabin is presented by the Wisconsin Counties Association and this week we're featuring Crawford County; https://bit.ly/3PbkeonCampfire Conversation: Eric and Ana welcome Adam Wallace into The Cabin to discuss the many VFW Posts and Halls that you'll find all over the state, as well as the country. As State Adjutant for VFWs of Wisconsin, Mr. Wallace knows a thing or two about the history of these establishments and what they have to offer. We discuss how the Veterans of Foreign Wars posts were originally established in the wake of the first World War, how they function as a community resource for not only these veterans, but the entire community. We talk about how the posts get their numbers and names, the similarities and differences among them, how they relate with American Legion posts, how they serve as a gathering place and support center for veterans who have fought overseas, and how the general public is welcome. VFW Posts and Halls have great little bars in them with friendly patrons and fascinating history. Many offer a variety of menu options from their kitchen as well as event space that proves popular for everything from community meetings to wedding receptions. These VFWs across Wisconsin are part of a network across the nation and indeed the globe where these common themes are woven together. Adam, Ana, and Eric discuss some particular posts, sharing stories and stats that will help you notice the VFW posts and halls you see in your town and on your travels. Stop in and explore them when you have a chance!Find out more about the Wisconsin VFW here: https://vfwwi.org/di/vfw/v2/default.aspVFW Posts of Wisconsin directory with links, Google Map locations, and more:: https://vfwwi.org/di/vfw/v2/default.asp?pid=13797Find out more about the Unmet Needs Program here: https://vfwwi.org/di/vfw/v2/default.asp?pid=5646Inside Sponsors:Ho-Chunk Nation  https://bit.ly/3l2CfruWashington County  https://bit.ly/3qayJAL

In today's podcast we honor our veterans and in the president's messages to veterans, we'll cover peace through strength. Going through our archives, both Citizen, Governor and President Reagan delivered many addresses saluting those who serve our country. Today we've chosen two – the first he delivered in August 1980 to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The theme was Peace because, in candidate Ronald Reagan's view, Peace was the first purpose of American foreign policy. So in saluting the sacrifices made by veterans, President Reagan is stressing that in order to protect these men, and find a path toward peace, we must focus on peace through strength.
