While veterans are often talked about, in Fight to Live, Live to Fight Veteran Activism after War: Veteran Activism after War (SUNY Press, 2019), Dr. Benjamin Schrader flips this this perspective by focusing on veterans telling their own stories. These veterans are not "broken" or "damaged and dangerous" from their experiences in war, rather they are active agents in their own healing and demilitarization. Schrader weaves his own experiences in the US military and then as a member of activist communities with the stories of other activist veterans across the United States. He critically examines US foreign and domestic policy through the narratives of post-9/11 military veterans who have turned to social justice activism after leaving the military. These veterans are involved in a wide array of activism, including antiwar organizing, economic justice, sexual violence prevention, immigration issues, and veteran healing through art. In the process of attempting to demilitarize their communities and themselves, these veterans turned activists remake their understandings of bravery and patriotism. This is an accessible and engaging work that may be read and appreciated not just by scholars, but also students and anyone interested in understanding the lives of veterans and the effects of war. Courtney Swoboda, who received the 2024 HigherEdMilitary Spotlight Award, describes her career path as "random." But during a recent interview with HigherEdJobs podcast co-hosts Andy Hibel and Monika Sziron, we saw that she is a determined and forward-thinking leader making strides in veteran education. As the director of Military and Veteran Services at the University of Central Missouri, Swoboda and her team spend their days processing educational benefits for students through the U.S. Department of Veterans. They also oversee state and federal military tuition assistance and process military transcripts. Swoboda launched a statewide organization, MOVES (Missouri Organization of Veteran Education Specialists) to help fellow educators solve common issues and learn from each other. In this episode, Swoboda described the group's role in shaping legislation to boost educational assistance for Missouri National Guard members. In addition to her academic career, Swoboda has served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve for more than 11 years. She is currently an education and training manager and was previously an aircraft armament specialist. Do you have a topic you would like us to discuss on the podcast? The hour starts off with a visit from Nicole Stockman from UWGB Veterans' Services. About 500 veterans and dependents of veterans receive education benefits at UW-Green Bay each year. Of this number, 300 are military veterans or current service members. Some of these students are on active duty one week, and in the classroom the next. Contact Nicole with any questions you may have. Then it's Ben and Deanna Malcore are in the house from Bay Area Realty. They talk more about the moves with interest rates, and the lack of available homes on the market. They also talk about refocusing on community involvement at Bay Area Realty. Community involvement is something Ben and Deanna feel very strongly about. We're lucky to have them in our community. When I first crossed paths with Ashley Williams at a veterans outreach event, I knew I'd stumbled upon someone extraordinary. Her dedication as Program Director for 22 Project shines through as she aids veterans in their battle against traumatic brain injury and PTSD, using hyperbaric oxygen therapy. This episode peels back the curtain on the life-altering work done at 22 Project, where traditional therapeutic support is augmented through the healing powers of increased oxygen pressure. Ashley recounts her journey with the organization and the Cruz family's inspiration for its creation, setting a deeply personal tone for our discussion on the critical care provided to those who've served our nation. The transformative nature of hyperbaric therapy is a beacon of hope for many, and we take you through the intimate stories of recovery and resilience. It's more than just the 40 treatments; it's about the comprehensive approach, encompassing logistical support, essential case management, and a suite of therapeutic offerings. These veterans' stories resonate with my own battle as a cancer survivor, finding parallels in the healing journey and the power of visible proof through SPECT imaging. The shared experiences and connections made through these brain scans are profound, offering veterans a tangible grasp on their path to wellness. As we navigate the nuanced landscape of non-profit organizations, the commitment to support our veterans remains our true north. This conversation underscores the importance of preparation, community, and financial backing for operations like 22 Project. We're reminded of the collective role we play in supporting veterans through fundraisers like 22 Projects upcoming golf tournament, bridging the gap between those who need help and those who can offer it. By joining us today, you'll uncover the heartfelt mission behind 22 Project and be inspired by the tenacity of those who work tirelessly to honor and uplift our servicemen and women.

Dogs for Our Brave's mission is to provide professionally trained service dogs at no cost to veterans who have suffered debilitating injury or illness while in service to our country. Their goal is to use rescue dogs at every opportunity, thus saving two lives at once. In order to fully realize their mission without adding financial burden, they also provide a continuum of free support that covers all food, veterinary care, and pharmaceuticals for the life of the dog. Bryan Pieschel has joined the DFOB Team as the first Director of Veteran Services. Bryan served as an active-duty US Army medic from 2004-2009. During his time in service, Bryan served as both a lead company medic and lead battalion medic attached to a mechanized engineer unit. His unit deployed to Iraq in October 2005 with the purpose of conducting and training Route Clearance missions (IED hunters). The battalion saw significant action in combat which led to multiple KIA's and numerous significantly injured soldiers. Bryan was one of the injured, during a night mission in Sept 2006 his vehicle was struck by an EFP (explosively formed projectile) that threw him into the back of the vehicle rendering him unconscious for several minutes, which resulted in him being awarded a Purple Heart. Upon returning to the states in Nov 2006, Bryan began to experience significant symptoms of PTSD and despite receiving great care, the symptoms would ultimately lead to him being medically retired in 2009. Despite his Retirement from active duty, the mission to serve his brothers and sisters in arms remains. After being medically retired from the Army, Bryan returned to St. Louis and began working with his other passion in life, coaching kids, and teenagers in the sport of volleyball. A Post-9/11 Veteran Town Hall Discussion with veterans Gil Barndollar and Robin Johnson, Veteran Fellowship Program Fellows Matthew Brown and Claudia Flores led by Hoover Fellow Jacquelyn Schneider. One of the greatest challenges for the All Volunteer Force is how to reintegrate a professional, volunteer military back into civilian society. For many previous generations, this re-integration was supported by veterans organizations, like the Veterans of Foreign Wars, which created a space for veterans to share experiences as they re-started their civilian life. However, the post 9/11 veteran generation has new challenges both in re-connecting with civilian life and in creating bonds between post 9/11 veterans that create positive societal impacts. The rise of social media as well as the diversity and the volunteer nature of this generation means that Vietnam-era structures and institutions designed for veterans may not work for building social bonds between 9/11 veterans and their communities. How does the post 9/11 veteran build social capital among each other? How do they connect with their communities? How can the post 9/11 veteran experience build social cohesion not only between veterans and civilians but also in the broader civil society? Tuesday, February 20, 2024 – Denver, CO Featuring Gil Barndollar | Senior Research Fellow, Center for the Study of Statesmanship; USMC veteran Matthew Brown | Hoover Veteran Fellow; President and CEO, Chimney Trail; USN Veteran Claudia Flores | Hoover Veteran Fellow; Policy and Planning Director, Virginia Department of Veteran Services; USN Veteran Robin Johnson | CEO, Best Medicine Brigade; President, HEAL*ARIOUS; USA veteran Moderated by Dr. Jacquelyn Schneider | Hoover Fellow, post-9/11 Veteran, USAFR

On this episode, we're joined by Nick Drake, director of NC State's Jeffrey Wright Military and Veteran Services, to discuss how private support enables our military-affiliated students to Think and Do. Drake has been the director for seven years this November and has seen a tremendous improvement in the already extraordinary program over that time — much of it thanks to the private support of military-affiliated alumni such as Jeff Wright '91 and his wife, Kelly Breslin Wright, and Jerry Collier '67 and his wife, Pat Collier. NC State loves the diversity that military-affiliated students bring to campus. In this episode of Leadership Level Up, Eric Peterson sits down with Jeff and Brian as he shares the foundation of his leadership approach. The founder of Project Headspace and Timing, an organization dedicated to providing services for veterans, Eric Peterson echoes a sentiment that many great leaders share - that at times he doesn't feel like one at all. (02:15) “There are moments where I feel like I'm taking charge, I have to take this and run with it and spearhead this project,” He says. “[But] throughout my life there have been many times where I've known that I needed to be a follower and not necessarily a leader in that moment, which I also think is also an important aspect of being a leader”Eric's humble approach shines through in how he views the types of respect a leader earns. For Eric, there is implied respect and earned respect. The former refers to the baseline respect conferred to a leader as a result of their position, whereas the earned respect can only be found after a leader demonstrates positive leadership qualities.Listen to this episode of Leadership LevelUp to learn more about these positive leadership qualities Eric describes, as well hear about Eric's leadership journey and how he works to help his Community.Be sure to subscribe to Leadership LevelUp so you don't miss future conversations with great leaders!MEET OUR GUESTEric Peterson is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Project Headspace and Timing, which since 2017 has aimed to help veterans in need. Raised in the Kankakee County Area, Peterson graduated from Herscher High School and went on to serve in the Army National Guard, serving in Afghanistan. In 2020, Peterson received the Daily Journal's Young Citizen of the Year Award and was placed on the Kankakee County's 40 under 40 list by the Kankakee County Chamber of Commerce. He is an ordained minister for the Universal Life Church, currently works in Veteran Services for Banyan Treatment Centers, and lives in Manteno with his wife and children.

Is there a correlation between resilience and the prevalence of suicide in the military? How do you know if you've become resilient? Minutes after leading a session about the topic of resilience during OCF's annual Local Leader Conference held at Spring Canyon earlier this year, Col Tim Hale, USAF (Ret.), sat down with me in the dining hall of Hartley Holmes Lodge to address these questions and others. Raised in a military community near Scott AFB, Tim began his own career in the Air Force after completing Air Force ROTC at St. Louis University. Throughout his decades of service, Tim's command positions at a variety of levels, bolstered by post-retirement experiences as a cabinet secretary for the New Mexico Department of Veteran Services and as an elder at his church, enabled him to see the importance of resilience firsthand. Tim now resides in Oklahoma, where he serves as OCF's Area Coordinator for Central Oklahoma, Southern Kansas, and Northern Texas. Check out the various resources mentioned throughout this episode “March or die”: Turning to Christ & community in times of trauma, OCF Crosspoint episode with Jeremy Stalnecker that focuses on topics related to today's episode with Tim Path to Resiliency by Chad Robichaux, Jeremy Stalnecker, and John Mizerak (foreword by MG Bob Dees, USA (Ret.)) Days of Anguish, Days of Hope by Bill Keith The Resilience Trilogy by MG Bob Dees, USA (Ret.) As you listen to this conversation with Tim, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor Tim says the best time to build resilience is before a traumatic event takes place. How can you build resilience now so that you're better prepared if and when potentially traumatic life events occur? Referring to Path to Resiliency, Tim reminds us that God can heal our trauma and enable us to move forward. What examples, biblical or personal, come to mind as you think of God restoring people after a traumatic event? Specifically, what spiritual disciplines can you cultivate now so that those habits are already established if and when traumatic experiences occur? Who do you consider your community to support you through trauma and recovery? Tim shares 2 Corinthians 1:3 as a biblical encouragement that God sustains us through trials. What scripture can you begin clinging to now that will encourage you through the hardships of life? Tim suggests that a self-examination of behavior in day-to-day life–even when things are good–can help assess personal resilience that will prove necessary in hardships. Reflect now on how you're handling the “small things” during this season of life, and ask yourself if there are spiritual disciplines to pursue as you seek to develop this resilience.
