In today's episode of Leading Through Crisis, we explore the question, “What's at stake when leaders are unprincipled, unethical, incompetent, and selfish?”Philippe Johnson, a retired US Air Force officer, advocate for principled and ethical leadership, and author, shares his thoughts, particularly as they relate to public service and through the lens of Trump's presidency.Topics discussed:◾️Paying attention to the competencies and personality traits that are being normalized◾️Traits of problematic leaders to watch out for◾️Principled loyalty vs blind loyalty, and loyalty over competence or ethics◾️What's at risk, on an organizational level and a larger, more macro or national level“That's the thing I want to diminish, loyalty for loyalty's sake as a virtue. It's not. The definition of loyalty is an allegiance that's earned.”Join us for a fascinating and perhaps horrifying conversation on What Hangs In The Balance (conveniently, also the name of Philippe's book).—Philippe Johnson is a retired United States Air Force officer and advocate for principled and ethical leadership in public service. The son of a language teacher and career United States Army officer, he was raised in the United States, France, and Germany. During his 24 years on active duty, Lieutenant Colonel Johnson served as a fixed- and rotary-wing pilot, intelligence officer, and diplomat (military attaché), and was honored with the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and the Air Medal with one oak leaf cluster. He also served on the staffs of two Air Force major commands as his final two assignments. Philippe received a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Florida and earned his master's degree in public policy from the University of Maryland's School of Public Policy. Simplifying can be a game-changer. For a leader, simplifying enhances their Leadership Presence, and thereby their leadership impact. For a scaling-up business, simplifying is a necessity.Simplifying can be practiced at different levels, rather at almost all levels. For example, Simplifying the strategy provides clarity to the Teams. Simplifying the execution inspires action, inspires the teams to execute with enthusiasm, helps to execute faster and with excellence!Simplifying communication delivers clarity to the audience. It's about embracing a Simplifying Mindset - that enables simplifying many aspects of Business and life. One of the ways to get going is to think in terms of First Principles - getting the basics right before moving on, breaking things down to their elementary parts, and working forward from there.Thinking First Principles often unravels complexity, and provides clarity on what to do and not to do and why. It even supports innovation at times, finding new and effective ways of doing things.Another way is to minimalise things - cutting things down to their essence, rooting out extra steps, and doing only what's truly needed. This could be with respect to the product or services that we offer, processes we follow, the meetings, the reports, the reviews, the communication we do.Simplifying is a game changer; Inspires Action. And enhances one's Leadership Impact significantly! My name is PK NarayananWishing you the best, Thank you.

What if lasting success isn't about what you achieve—but who you become? In this powerful episode, host Nicole Jansen sits down with Rusty Rueff—renowned tech executive, startup advisor, philanthropist, and co-author of Faith Code—to explore how inner purpose and spiritual identity provide the only truly unshakable foundation for life and leadership. Drawing from two decades of reflection, Rusty shares a compelling metaphor: Are you building your life on a solid platform (faith, values, purpose), or just stacking up flashy but fragile apps (titles, possessions, roles)? Welcome to the Arete Coach Podcast, hosted by Severin Sorensen. In this episode titled "Mastery in Motion — Journey to Coaching Excellence and Leadership Impact," Severin speaks with Dr. Wai K Leong, an accomplished ICF Master Certified Coach (MCC), ICF Global Board Director, and Founder of JMC Coach Mastery Academy. Recorded on December 20, 2024, this conversation explores Wai K's journey from corporate leadership to coaching mastery, and his influential role in building coaching cultures across Asia and beyond. Recognized as the first Malaysian to receive the MCC credential and a member of the ICF Circle of Distinction (2019), Wai K shares powerful lessons for leaders and executive coaches seeking excellence. Wai K Leong's career began in education and corporate leadership, including significant roles at Intel and the Hong Leong Group, before he transitioned fully into coaching. His early leadership challenges sparked a deep interest in coaching methodologies, greatly influenced by the teachings of Thomas Leonard. In 1999, Wai K founded the JMC Coach Mastery Academy, establishing one of ASEAN's first ICF-accredited institutions with all four accredited coaching programs. His authored works — including Empowering Asian Mindsets Through Coaching — blend coaching mastery with cultural intelligence, empowering leaders to drive transformational change. Key Insights 1. Mastery Beyond Tools: Transforming the Self Wai K emphasizes that true coaching excellence requires a personal transformation — not just mastering techniques, but deep inner work, developing self-awareness, and practicing courageous presence. 2. The Power of Staying Curious He illustrates the importance of "remaining in a state of not knowing," allowing deeper client truths to emerge without rushing to conclusions, a hallmark of masterful coaching. 3. Narratives Shape Leadership Wai K teaches that problems are symptoms of deeper assumptions and beliefs, and coaches must guide clients to reframe unhelpful narratives for true progress. 4. Cultural Bridges in Coaching Addressing the differences between Eastern and Western mindsets, Wai K shares strategies for adapting coaching approaches across cultures, fostering reflection even where expressiveness may not be culturally natural. 5. Lifelong Development and Reflection From mastering presence to reinforcing healthy boundaries, Wai K champions continuous personal development as the foundation of lasting coaching impact. Providing feedbacks and feed-forwards in an effective way enhances one's Leadership Presence.Feedbacks and feed forwards are generally offered to correct something, to improve performance, or to highlight something that could be done better. It need not be so always. One could catch someone doing things right, and offer a feedback. And accentuate the positive. Someone asked a leader ‘Why would you commend someone for doing something they're supposed to do?'The leader answered: ‘So they keep doing it.'It's important that in our focus on things to correct, we are not blind to the positive things people do on a daily basis. When you catch people doing the right things and offer feedback, it provides clarity, builds trust and psychological safety. Also it helps people to become the best version of themselves.Providing feedbacks and feed-forwards in an effective way – it enhances one's Leadership Impact! My name is PK NarayananWishing you the best, Thank you.

What if the secret to becoming a more effective and inspiring leader took just 15 minutes a week?Leadership can feel overwhelming, and it's easy to get stuck in a cycle of stress and negativity. But what if there was a simple, research-backed tool that could increase your influence, improve team engagement, and boost your own leadership satisfaction—all in just a few minutes each week? You Will Discover:
Every individual possesses influence that creates ripples affecting those around them, whether in family life, workplace interactions, or church community. Drawing from Malachi's message to the priests, we learn that poor spiritual leadership can devastate through insufficient devotion to God, teaching watered-down doctrine, showing partiality in following God's word, and living inconsistently with proclaimed faith. These negative influences can result in lost blessings, damaged relationships with God, and negative impacts on future generations. Effective spiritual leadership, however, emerges from three key elements: right worship through standing in awe of God, speaking truth effectively, and walking with integrity. By examining our spheres of influence and making intentional commitments to lead by example, we can create positive ripples that draw others toward God rather than away from Him. This might involve starting family devotions, sharing faith at work, or actively encouraging others in their spiritual journey. First Baptist Church depends on faithful and generous giving. Leading a business to perform at optimal level is a continuous challenge for CEOs and Business Leaders. The good news is that today Leaders have multiple support systems, including that of working with a Coach, to create, build, and enhance their leadership presence and leadership Impact. I would like to share 6 significant areas where Leaders could enhance their effectiveness working with a Coach: 1. Enhancing leadership presence: to Inspire more, influence more and impact more by building and strengthening our ability to focus, listen, communicate, and be present. 2. Making better choices, taking better decisions: Leadership is about making choices and decisions that impacts many. Better leadership is about making better choices, and taking better decisions. 3. Working around the challenges: Possibilities exist to face challenges by thinking around them, working around them, than thinking about them and taking them head-on. 4. Discovering blind-spots: As humans, we all have our blind-spots. Discovering them, working on them, enhances our effectiveness. 5. Simplifying: It takes conscious efforts to simplify. When we simplify, things get clearer to us, and to the teams. When we simplify things get done. 6. Focusing, managing distractions: Focusing on the right areas also means building our ability to manage distractions. Working with a Coach, CEOs and Business Leaders could build upon aspects that are relevant to them and their context, and enhance their leadership impact significantly. Chain of Learning: Empowering Continuous Improvement Change Leaders
What questions are on your mind? That's the question I posed to you last month when I asked you to “Ask me anything!”I received many great questions and, as promised, I've picked five to dive into during this episode. Asking the right questions is a fundamental part of leading transformational change. It's not just about finding answers—it's about understanding why we ask our questions and how we react when others ask us.It's just as important to know the reasons behind why we're asking. What's the intention behind the question? What are we hoping to learn or uncover? This is where true understanding happens—both for the person asking and the one being asked. So the next time someone asks you a question, take a moment to ask a follow-up question. You both might be surprised with the answer! Now, it's time to dive into your questions!YOU'LL LEARN:How to shift from a “command and control” leadership style to a culture focused on continuous improvementCommon obstacles organizations face when implementing transformational change and how to overcome themHow you can effectively balance the need for short-term results with the pursuit of long-term strategic goals while developing peopleInsights on transitioning from a lean leader in an organization to starting a consultancy businessHow continuous improvement teams can amplify their impact and link leadership coaching to driving real business outcomes What additional questions are on your mind? This episode will be part celebration, part reflection, and part insight. We will be celebrating what we learned from 1 year of hosting a live radio show and podcast, looking back at some of the highlights, and also sharing specific data on a group coaching program that follows the framework that our seasons have been focusing on this past year: Navigating Uncertainty, Developing Leadership Identity, Mapping a Strategy, Navigating Complexity, and Making a Greater Impact. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:How do you make an impact on leadership development in a large healthcare system where people generally work in siloes? How can you help clinical and academic leaders feel more prepared and more supported to create organizational change and lead in times of uncertainty? We will review our proprietary research-based 5-stage Strategic Leadership Pathway model and the results from a program evaluation study of this model conducted at Duke University and presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting. We'll explore questions such as:1. What might be the impetus for starting a group coaching program within academic healthcare - what was the need identified and why group coaching?2. What can you expect to gain from such a program and what are the implications?3. What impact could this kind of program potentially serve in highly complex academic medicine and healthcare environments in supporting leaders in those environments. And we'll also celebrate 50 episodes and 1 year of doing this radio show!***ABOUT OUR GUESTS:Dr. Mara Becker, MD, MSCE, is a physician-scientist and Vice Dean for Faculty of Duke University School of Medicine's Office of Faculty.
