Beyond Zero Sum: Rehumanising our Conflicts with Carm Aufderheide of NorthStar Training Solutions

All flourishing is mutual, that's a given. And yet the schisms in our culture, the tribal divides and limbic hijack seem to grow deeper and more powerful by the day. It doesn't have to be like this.  We do have the tools of connection, of genuine listening, of offering trust to gain trust and offering respect to gain respect, we just need to know how  - and when - to put them into practice.  If we're going to move forward into that future we'd be proud to leave behind, we need to start practicing these skills as if the world depended on them - because it does.  This week's guest is someone who practices and teaches the deep, transformative skills of conflict resolution daily.  Carm Aufderheide has a master's degree in conflict and dispute resolution (CRES), and qualifications in positive reinforcement dog training from the Karen Pryor Professional Dog Training Academy (KPA-CTP and CPDT-KA) and in Separation Anxiety from Malena DeMartini, bringing both to her consultations in her NorthStar Training Solutions in Oregon. Together, these put her right in the middle of quite fierce conflicts that rage around the dog training world over the various styles of dog training, most of which boil down to: do we use force or don't we?  This is a perfect microcosm of the greater macrocosm of our torn and wounded world and Carm brings her dual skills to this with grace and intelligence and a fierce compassion that is a joy to encounter.  I first came across Carm on the Functional Dog Collaborative podcast and was blown away by the clarity of her thinking, and her capacity to live true to her convictions. I made contact later that day and we set up time for the podcast.  That was roughly six months ago, when the world was a different place. Now, recording on the day of the Pope's death, as our reality spirals deeper into chaos, it feels ever more essential that we learn these skills.   Carm suggested a whole set of reading before we recorded and I have put a link to all the books, as well as Carm's NorthStar website in the show notes.   Northstar Training Solutions https://www.northstartraining.info/ Street Epistemology https://www.streetepistemology.com/Albert Mehrabian's 7-38-55 Rule https://www.rightattitudes.com/2008/10/04/7-38-55-rule-personal-communication/Carm on the Functional Dog Collaborative podcast Carm's Recommended readingHow Minds Change by David McRaneySupercommunicators by Charles Duhigg High Conflict by Amanda RipleyThe Book of Beautiful Questions by Warren BergerNever Split the Difference by Chris VossWe Can Work it Out by Marshall RosenbergIf you're interested in joining us at a Gathering, or in the Membership, please follow the links below: Accidental Gods Gatherings https://accidentalgods.life/gatherings-2025/Accidental Gods Membership https://accidentalgods.life/join-us/

Today's episode is all about separation anxiety in dogs. This is absolutely one of the most common reasons that folks might reach out to a dog behavior professional for help. It's also one of the issues that can be truly one of the most stressful (and sometimes feel debilitating) and can have a big negative impact on welfare on both ends of the leash. Despite it being a really common issue, separation anxiety is often a little bit misunderstood when it comes both to the factors that can contribute to why it's happening in the first place and also the ways to treat it or help improve it. So today we are very privileged to be joined by a powerhouse guest lineup to help us clear up some of these misconceptions about separation anxiety and share with listeners more about what it really is, why it happens, and paths to move forward. We discuss:- What is Separation Anxiety (and what it isn't)- Causes of Separation Anxiety (perceived and actual)- Prevalence in Separation Anxiety in companion dogs- Treatment/Intervention options - Common derailers of progress- Success rates and timelines- How to get startedGuests:- Malena DeMartini-Price is renowned in the dog training world for her expertise in dog separation anxiety issues. Don't we need to see the behavior to know how to change it?Before I decided to specialize exclusively in separation anxiety, I fielded this question a lot. Many of my clients with aggressive dogs in particular strongly believed that I needed to see Fido snapping at visitors to successfully change the behavior. The case can certainly be made (as I did many times) that it isn't necessary (or ethical) to put dogs and people in danger and risk a bite solely for the purpose of observation. Especially when we can safely and accurately surmise why Fido would do such a thing and what the best course of action would be without pushing a dog past their threshold. But what about for separation anxiety dogs? As my special guest and mentor Malena DeMartini and I discuss in this episode, we strongly believe in the importance of an initial absence assessment before embarking on a home alone protocol. We take a deep dive in all things initial assessments: what they are, why they are important, and how to conduct them. In this episode of the Believe in Your Dog Podcast, you will learn:  How we define an initial absence assessmentWhy we believe they are absolutely critical in establishing a baseline and understanding an individual dog's suite of behaviorsWhat specific tools are needed to conduct an initial assessmentEnvironmental interventions to consider prior to the assessmentAll things camera set-up and positioning, including my personal favorite camera for separation anxiety trainingHow to know when it's time to stop the assessmentWhat to look for and measure during and after the assessmentWhat to do and not do when you return homeAnd so much more! Resources mentioned in this episode:Malena's websiteMalena on InstagramMalena on FacebookSchedule an initial assessment with a CSATLearn more about Mission Possible, Malena's DIY online training course.  Use coupon code CSAT50 for $50 off.Malena's bookWyze cam:https://www.wyze.com/How to watch and record your assessment using ZoomGreeting research that we talked about:https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1558787820300460If your dog doesn't have SA/something else happened in the assessment:https://www.companionanimalpsychology.com/2016/12/how-to-choose-dog-trainer.html

I've never been a big fan of labels. I have blogged about why they can be problematic.  But I also recognize that they can be innocuous, and in some cases, helpful. When it comes to separation anxiety training, getting clear on the terminology is important. It's important because a clear understanding of what specific triggers are at play is imperative in planning and executing a successful training protocol. And labels like separation anxiety, isolation distress and fear of missing out (FOMO) allow us to group common triggers into categories that make training for efficient. In this episode of the Believe in Your Dog Podcast, you will learn:  The difference between clinical Separation Anxiety, isolation distress and FOMOThe umbrella term that most certified separation anxiety trainers (and lay people alike) use to describe separation-related challengesThe two key distinctions between bona fide separation anxiety and a dog who is just having a party while you're awayWhy the distinction between “upset” and “non-upset” is so important, even though the resulting behaviors can look very similarWhat FOMO really is and why I worry that it trivializes the distress that a dog may be experiencingWhy it's normal for dogs to become distressed when left aloneI also touch on the subject of the next episode: How to run an assessment with my mentor, Malena DeMartini. Resources mentioned in this episode:https://www.believeinyour.dog/blog/defining-separation-anxietyhttps://www.dacvb.org/page/AnimalOwners

In this episode of the Good Dog Pod, host Laura Reeves is joined by Malena DeMartini to talk about separation anxiety in dogs. Malena is a certified dog trainer and behavior consultant who specializes in this topic, with over two decades of experience.  How should I retrain my dog who has had previous experience with being left home alone? If you have had your dog since before the pandemic, it is likely that they know what it is like being left at home. Start by setting up a camera through which you can watch how your dog reacts to your absence. Give your dog a toy or treat so they associate you leaving with something positive. If your dog settles down after a little while, gradually build up the time you spent away from your dog. Randomize the time you leave your dog at home so they do not start noticing the pattern; leave for a short period of time on some days, and a long period of time on others.  How should I train my newly acquired dog? Again, start with observing your dog's reaction to being home alone through a camera. If you notice your dog becoming increasingly agitated - ie. howling, excessive panting and pacing, non stop pawing at the door or windows - go back inside your house. Next, determine how long the dog can handle being home alone with the help of the camera. With each time that you leave them at home, stay under their panic point; return home before they can become too anxious. If your dog needs to be confined when home alone, perform all training with them in the crate or gated room.  How can I tell if my dog is simply upset at being left at home or actually experiencing separation anxiety? It is normal for dogs to be upset at being left at home alone; most dogs will whine or bark for the first few minutes. Separation anxiety is much more extreme, and over time can have psychological and even physiological effects. If you observe your dog through your camera acting extremely differently from how they usually do, to the point of being very destructive, learn how to best cope with separation anxiety and ensure the welfare of your dog.  Malena offers a self-paced, online course called “https://malenademartini.com/for-owners/separation-anxiety-in-dogs-mission-possible-online-course/ (Mission: Possible)” on dealing with separation anxiety. She is offering listeners of this podcast a discount on the course using the code GOODDOG.

Separation Anxiety: Myth Busting with Malena DeMartinihttps://malenademartini.com/ (Malena DeMartini), canine behavior specialist focused on separation anxiety, joins host Laura Reeves for some mythbusting around anxiety, separation anxiety, genetics and heritability of anxieties and fears, and more. “When we're talking with regard to separation anxiety, your dog is not being a jerk,” DeMartini said. “Nor are they being spiteful. Nor are they just angry at you because you're not spending enough time with them. All of that discussion, that is not what's happening. What is happening is so important that we understand from a compassion and empathy standpoint, as well as from a training standpoint. These dogs are panicked. This is a true phobia to being left alone. I want to remind people that, by definition, phobias tend to be rather irrational, or at least irrational to the person that's not experiencing that. It really isn't your fault“Spoiling, and this is how they represent spoiling: letting a dog sleep on the bed, letting a dog on the furniture, giving them lots of treats or feeding them extra goodies, or taking them on car rides with us, all these sorts of activities, which in my head are part of having a family member, none of those things are either causational or correlational for separation anxiety. “When you have a dog with separation anxiety, you are going to get every naysayer in the universe coming after you saying it is your fault … I just want people to absolve themselves from that guilt and no they did not create an animal with separation anxiety by letting him snuggle on the couch.” Don't "feed the beast"DeMartini also offered recommendations on how to not “feed the beast” of a dog's anxiety. “When I talk about nonchalant exits and entries, we have to remember that dogs are masters of discrimination. Yes, they know when we're leaving and so taking an extra five minutes to give them kissy sounds can just put more emphasis on the exit. So, I tell people your dog has figured out that you put on your shoes, you've grabbed your backpack, got your keys in your hand, your dog is fully aware that you're about to leave, you don't have to tell him anything. All in the family?DeMartini provided insight on the genetics and epigenetics of anxiety and fear in dogs, as well. “In the last few years (researchers) have actually identified a haplotype, so sort of a genetic marker, that is specifically in accordance with separation anxiety. Here is the important aspect: just because (a dog has) that particular haplotype, where those genetic markers exist, does not mean that the behavior problem is going to occur. That's where the epigenetics play a role. These are like toggle switches. So that toggle switch may remain off for the lifetime of that animal but there are some environmental influences that could flip that toggle switch. “You can have the most beautiful well-bred dog physically, but if they are suffering from a welfare perspective because of their mental health that's a problem. Behavior modification“Separation anxiety is actually a behavior that is quite modifiable. It's not easy and it takes time, but we can do a lot to optimize dogs for a long-term success in the beginning of their lives. Just because there's that genetic potential predisposition, that doesn't mean that we can't change it. Heritability is not a diagnosis of a permanent state. “Separation anxiety behaviors are evolutionarily appropriate for puppies at a young age. How many of us have seen a puppy cry and the bitch comes back. We've seen it over millions of years of evolution that there is a purpose for vocalization and some of these other behaviors when these pups are really, really young. But the majority of them do grow out of it. If they don't it's become sort of maladaptive. When it becomes maladaptive in a 14 or 16 or 18 week pup, no amount of letting them cry it out and try and get over it is going to help them grow out of it. That... Support this podcast
