On today's episode, we welcome Jameson Parker, a seasoned producer with roots in theater, who's climbed the ranks in the world of film and television. As a Development Director at Bright Light Pictures, Jameson has developed a keen eye for projects that align with his passion and resonate with audiences. Starting as an actor, he transitioned to production, taking on the mentorship of industry veteran Sean Williamson, and carving a niche in the independent cinema space.Jameson shares his journey from pursuing theater in Vancouver to becoming a producer with a versatile portfolio, which includes films like Summer of 84 and the Netflix series Julie and the Phantoms. He explains the art of “breaking in” as an evolving process, emphasizing perseverance and the invaluable nature of mentorship in an industry where relationships shape opportunities. In his case, connecting with Sean was pivotal, as it granted him guidance and resources to navigate the challenging waters of production. As he aptly puts it, “There's an element of perseverance that permeates every success story—banging your head against the wall until the brick cracks.”In our conversation, Jameson reflects on the state of Hollywood's market-driven focus, where franchises and reboots often overshadow fresh, original stories. He believes true creative fulfillment lies in cultivating unique narratives rather than chasing trends. He references his experience with Summer of 84, which drew inspiration from classic thrillers and managed to resonate with audiences without the typical industry formulas. Jameson champions the importance of bringing something authentic to the screen, arguing, “If you chase what's doing well in the marketplace, you're always going to be behind the eight ball.”For Jameson, networking is less about formal events and more about building meaningful relationships. He recalls his serendipitous meeting with writer Matt Leslie at a networking event, which led to the development of Summer of 84. He stresses that genuine connections often lead to more fruitful collaborations than transactional exchanges. This philosophy has carried him through many projects, as he remains committed to developing authentic connections both on and off set.As the conversation deepens, Jameson delves into the complexities of producing for television versus film. Working with Netflix on Julie and the Phantoms, alongside renowned director Kenny Ortega, has been a “big learning experience” for him. He contrasts this with his independent projects, which allow for more creative control and hands-on involvement. The Netflix series exemplifies the evolving landscape of TV production, where platforms like Netflix provide vast opportunities but also introduce unique challenges due to their expansive, competitive nature.Jameson also speaks to the behind-the-scenes challenges producers face, especially in managing large teams on set. From navigating egos to ensuring open communication, he explains how these aspects shape the production experience. He acknowledges that problem-solving in production can feel overwhelming but emphasizes the importance of keeping a calm perspective. “If it can be solved with money, it's not really a problem,” he says, underscoring his pragmatic approach to navigating production obstacles. In a business defined by collaboration and trust, Jameson has thrived by working with familiar faces, valuing shared experiences over constant change. His career is a testament to the power of resilience, passion, and a deep-seated love for storytelling. As he anticipates his next independent film project, he remains committed to blending his studio experiences with his passion for independent cinema.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

In this episode of The Autistic Culture Podcast:Hosts, Matt Lowry, LPP and Dr. Angela Lauria delve, into the world of Parks and Recreation, discussing how the show presents Autistic culture. Drawing on their own experiences as Autistic adults, Matt and Angela discuss how they feel seen and represented by characters like Leslie Knope, Ron Swanson, Ben Wyatt, & Chris Traeger.“And that's the thing, because when we talk about the positive traits of being Autistic, these two embody all of them. This dedication, this passion, this hyper-empathy for themselves and for their town and want to work better.” –Matt  Leslie is passionate, dedicated, intensely focused on her interests, socially awkward, and enjoys detailed organization—traits common to individuals on the autism spectrum. Ron Swanson has a strict moral code, is annoyed by chit chat, has specialized interests like woodworking, and dislikes chaos and drama. He represents the Autistic preference for routine, order, and lots of alone-time.The podcast hosts emphasize the importance of showing well-rounded, relatable Autistic characters instead of caricatures or stereotypes—Autistic people are fully fleshed out individuals with passions, empathy, and life goals. Accurate autistic representation helps humanize Autistic individuals and helps allistics relate to our culture. It gives Autistics a sense of belonging and community—positively impacting our mental health.“Yeah and so what she does for fun, she loves organizing, she loves making binders, she loves making plans, she has a sign maker on retention so that in the event that she needs a sign at a moment's notice she can have a sign in an hour. I get it.” –AngelaThe hosts estimate 20% of people are Autistic based on evolving understanding, though far fewer are officially diagnosed. They critique outdated, restrictive diagnostic criteria. In all, the hosts praise Parks and Rec for its nuanced, positive portrayals of Autistic traits in beloved characters. This representation validates Autistic culture and identity. I’m joined by writer, producer, and director Matt Leslie, he wrote and produced Summer of 84 (one of my favorites, go watch it) and has his upcoming directorial debut The Knocking currently in production. He chose to discuss one of his favorite sleeper hits, The House of The Devil. It was released in 2009 and is available to watch on Amazon Prime. This film was written and directed by Ti West (V/H/S, The Innkeepers, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever). Starring Jocelin Donahue (Insidious: Chapter 2, Doctor Sleep), Tom Noonan (Manhunter, Damages), Greta Gerwig (writer of Ladybird, Little Women, actress in Arthur, Jackie, Isle of Dogs) and an appearance by Dee Wallace (E.T., Cujo, The Howling). I won't lie, this wasn't one of my favorites, but I can appreciate the cinematography, it was very cool to see how they were able to make this film feel like it was shot in 1983. I rarely drink while watching the films for this podcast, I need to be in control and make sure others don't go off topic. In this episode, neither one of us were drinking, just a normal conversation. With all of that being said, no drinking game for this week, unless you decide to make one up, but feel free to make yourself a Red Devil. Red Devil (recipe by Boomette): 1 1/2 oz Vodka 1 1/2 oz Peach Snapps (Or Western Son Peach made with real peaches and no sugar added) 1 1/2 oz Souther Comfort 1 1/2 oz Gin 2 oz Triple Sec 2 oz Orange Juice Grenadine Mix alcohol into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. I was lucky enough to see Summer of '84 a few weeks ago in Salem, Massachusetts, not far from where Matt Leslie grew up in Ipswich. I had not heard of the film before, but it was sponsored by the Salem Horror Fest, and I trust the tastes of the folks who run that, so I went into it with no hype, knowing virtually nothing about it. I greatly enjoyed the film. It has the same vibe as movies I enjoyed, oddly enough, as a teenager in the mid-eighties like The Lost Boys or The Goonies. Davey, a suburban teenager, thinks his neighbor, Mackey, might be a serial killer. One night when he's out playing a game with his three best friends, Davey happens to see a kid in Mackey's kitchen. That gets Davey's conspiracy theorist mind working. Kids have been going missing lately, and when the next one looks like the kid he saw through Mackey's window, Davey is convinced. But who would believe him? Mackey is a cop and by all outward appearances, the perfect suburban neighbor. Naturally, the only people he can turn to are his friends – the nerdy Farraday, rebel Tommy, and the good-natured big kid, Woody. The first and possibly most important thing that got my attention is how natural the kids seemed together. This kind of movie lives and dies by the chemistry of its cast, and that worked for me. So did Rich Sommer from Wet Hot American Summer, Mad Men, and GLOW, who plays the neighbor, Wayne Mackey. He has to be likable enough to cast doubt on Davey's theory and creepy enough that Davey doesn't seem insane, and Sommer walks that line well, into the third act when things change dramatically. The major story arc was well-plotted, providing just enough doubt to keep the mystery going.  Leslie co-wrote the script with Stephen J. Smith and also served as a producer. We kept the conversation mainly spoiler-free for the first half, but there were some elements we needs to dive into, so if you haven't seen the film and want to avoid spoilers, stop when I mention that in the conversation and please do come back and finish after you've seen it. Look for Summer of 84 streaming on Amazon Prime and Vudu or pick it up on BluRay now. You can find out more about Leslie's work, as well as Smiths, at www.smithandleslie.com. The featured track this week is “Social Stuff,” from Jo Firetone's new stand-up album, The Hits, out now on Comedy Central Records. It's a fun album, a live recording that includes occasional, seemingly spontaneous musical interludes from Arcade Fire's Will Butler. Firestone has a gentle demeanor that belies a sharper wit and a constant agitation over dealing with the outside world, which is what this track is all about. It's the minor tragedies of social interactions, from farting in an elevator to saying dumb thing in public. My favorite line in this is the frustrated, “I don't know how to get smarter, you could read, but, I mean, who cares?” Firestone is a staff writer on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and hosts the Dr. Gameshow podcast on the Earwolf network. Screenwriter Matt Leslie was involved in website design when he discovered the book, 'Story,' by Robert McKee. Soon, he went with a friend to see McKee at a seminar. Leslie’s writing partner, Stephen Smith, was originally interested in animation when he discovered screenwriting. In 2011, the duo teamed up to start writing professionally, which consists of around eight spec scripts, a pilot, and “a million treatments.” In their new film, 'Summer of 84,' a group of teenage friends suspect their police officer neighbor is actually a serial killer. As the group starts to uncover the truth, their findings get more and more dangerous. The film stars 'Mad Men’s Rich Sommer, along with newcomers Graham Verchere, Judah Lewis, and Caleb Emergy. In addition to the team of screenwriters, there was also a team of directors attached to this project. RKSS (Turbokid), made up of François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell, where they describe their hive mentality as directors as family. In both collaborations, the screenwriter duo and the director trio understand that “everything you do should be for the good of the film.” This helped Matt Leslie and Stephen Smith pen the story and RKSS get in the right mindset to shape up this film. Traditionally craft beer has been in glass bottles, but in recent years there has been an increase in the number of craft beer canned products. When starting a brewery, a major cost can be the bottling or canning line. West Coast Canning in Vancouver, BC provide the solution with their mobile canning lines. I spoke with co-owner Matt Leslie about how they started, and if cans are better for craft beer.
