A blockbuster book, an all-star cast... what could possibly go wrong? For our second season, we're telling the inside story of The Bonfire of the Vanities, a movie that was supposed to be a hit – but wasn't. Come with us onto the closed set and hear actual recordings of Brian De Palma, Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffith and others, to find out how a highly-anticipated film became a cautionary tale for the ages. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Brian DePalma's 1990 adaptation of Tom Wolfe's bestseller The Bonfire of the Vanities was supposed to be a Great American Film--but things didn't work out that way. Julie Salamon's 1991 book The Devil's Candy: The Anatomy of a Hollywood Fiasco details the struggles to make the film and how the war between art and commerce was waged in the offices of studio executives and on the set. It's one of the best books ever written about how a movie is made and who-does-what behind the scenes. Mike and Dan talk to Julie Salamon about how talented, creative people with the best intentions and deepest commitment to their work can somehow create a film as widely panned as Bonfire. This is a can't-miss episode! You can get a copy of The Devil's Candy here: https://www.amazon.com/Devils-Candy-Anatomy-Hollywood-Fiasco/dp/0306811235/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1621371948&sr=8-1 Please subscribe to the show wherever you get your podcasts and follow us on Twitter @15MinFilm. Since I have been pretty much positive during this whole month. I, The Vern thought it would be fun to release a show that reviewed some horror movies I wasn't a fan of. There are more I could have listed but I needed to clear up some space on my hard drive and this felt right to use. After this episode, I may loose a few followers. Just keep in mind these are just my opinions and they don't have to match with yours. Feature films include are A Quiet Place, The Devil's Candy & Bad Apples. As the Chattanooga Film Festival draws ever nearer, Eric and I continue on with our pre-coverage of this year's CFF by recounting previous years of CFF. On tonight's episode, we discuss films from the 2017 Chattanooga Film Festival. As I mentioned on the previous episode, the Chattanooga Film Festival is so much more than just the movies...it is a cinematic experience and an opportunity to talk with other people who love cinema just as much as you do (including many of the people involved in making the films screened at CFF)...but, obviously the movies are a pretty major part. And while I wish that each episode leading up to CFF could be a deep-dive into every single movie screened each year, that just isn't possible. So, instead, each week we will be focusing on a few movies that really highlight the Chattanooga Film Festival experience from each of the previous years that I have attended (this will be the fourth year that I have attended CFF and the first year that Eric has attended) as a way to give Eric (and our listeners) a glimpse of what CFF is like. The criteria for the movies picked from each year are: 1) they are movies that I saw during the film festival that year, 2) they are movies that are available online (Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.), 3) they are movies that represented the experience of the film fest, rather than just being a good movie (there are some movies that are great movies, but you could get roughly the same experience seeing them in any movie theater...and there are other movies that might not necessarily be as "good," but it will be an experience that you are not likely to have outside of a film festival). With those criteria in mind, the films from 2017 that are covered in tonight's episode are: Dave Made A Maze, Feeding Time, Sequence Break, The Dragon Lives Again and The Zodiac Killer(both presented by the American Genre Film Archive), David Lynch: The Art Life, Dayveon, and The Devil's Candy, along with some brief highlights about The Monster Squad and The Void. We end the episode talking about The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Milicent Patrick - by Mallory O'Meara. The Chattanooga Film Festival will be screening The Creature from the Black Lagoon, pairing it with a talk by Mallory O'Meara. So, in preparation, Eric and I have both been reading her book (and we both very highly recommend it!) For tickets or more information (including complete lists of films screened each year) go to chattfilmfest.org - and be sure to follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter to stay up to date on announcements for CFF 2019. And be sure to come back soon for more cinematic discussions on The Gargyle Podcast!! Up next will be a break from our CFF coverage as we interview Bill Fulkerson and Kyle Kuchta on their documentary, Survival of the Film Freaks (which won a Gargyle Award during our Knoxville Horror Film Fest coverage for "movie that I am most excited to share with someone else"). After that, we will return to our CFF pre-coverage by discussing some of the films from CFF 2018. gargylereviews.wixsite.com/thegargyle music from besound.com
The duo discuss the 2015 occult horror film "The Devil's Candy," as they begin The Devil Made Me Do It Month. We got Ethan Embry as Jesse, a struggling artist dedicated to his family, his workout regime, and not bathing or shaving, squaring off-against Pruitt Taylor Vince as Ray, the lonesome character you would feel was essentially just a scared little boy if he wasn't in the body of a big ole sweaty hunk of man. Join us for sympathetic police officers, filthy undershirts, an extremely short run time, pretty-sweet-Devil-but kinda-corny heavy metal imagery, and a silly art-seller subplot at HAIL SATAN GALLERIES.

Doom chords, creeping voices, killer artwork, and heavy metal family values are deftly painted on the screen, in this sophomore effort from Tasmanian filmmaker Sean Byrne. The first film in 2018's REVENGE OF MONSTOBER FEST takes the boys from the comforts of the Nighthawks Diner, to the inky black, humid, and hot hills of Texas' Williamson County. A married couple of rock and roll artists from nearby Austin have locked in their dream home at an unbeatable price. Meanwhile, a confused killer who tries to keep his literal demons at bay by playing doom chords on a guitar, decides he wants to return home. A home currently occupied by a transplant Austin family. A criminally underwatched classic for fans of Heavy Metal, Horror Movies, and top-tier genre performances. The Devil's Candy delivers on its sweetness. But the Nighthawks can't do anything the easy way. Not unlike the conflict of a struggling artist finding his way between personal fulfillment and commercial success; The Devil's Candy is an artwork on two canvases. At issue is the 71 minute version currently available in release, and a phantom festival cut that the boys saw a few years ago, with 11 extra minutes of content. Did the 11 minutes make a difference? Tune in and see... if you dare! Featured in the film is the artwork of Stephen Kasner, who was briefly profiled in this 2017 piece from Clevescene-dot-com: https://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2017/03/23/local-artist-whose-twisted-paintings-appear-in-horror-flick-will-introduce-film-at-capitol

You're not going to believe this but we actually dive pretty deep into The Wizard and Little Monsters. sure there is some nostalgia in there but we talk about the themes of loss, divorce, mental illness, and the love of siblings. We weren't expecting it either. After that we chat about other stuff we watched like The Devil's Candy, Summer Of Fear, The Babysitter, and 1922.
The crew gathered this week to watch a movie that feels like it was ripped straight from the heart of the ‘90s horror scene, Happy Death Day. Guitars are also strapped on and turned way up for The Devil's Candy, a satanic possession movie with a hint of heavy metal. This week's episode of American Horror Story: Cult is also discussed, along with learning ninja skills from Naruto, the Halloween reboot, “insensitive” Halloween costumes and the legality of drunken canoeing in Canada. The crew also bring their A game to some Crappy Cryptids as well as a monstrous round of Whole Hog.
Do aliens exist? Do they come in peace? This is a question movies have asked for decades. It being the Halloween season, we've decided that if aliens are out there they most definitely WON'T be coming in peace. Therefore we've chosen our top five favourite "Space Invaders" films and they range from horror, to comedy, to action and all sorts of things in-between. First off we talk about what we've been watching including a return visit to Elm Street, some of The Devil's Candy, a handful of disco, a John Waters musical, and much more! Thanks for listening! Be sure to head to iTunes to subscribe and drop us a five star rating/review - every little bit helps! Links to all our web stuff at www.gbwpodcast.com
We're back and we fit a silly amount of stuff into an episode that fits in just under an hour! Get Out, Prevenge, The Exorcist III, The Devil's Candy and The Blackcoat's Daughter are amongst the discussion.
We made it to 50 episodes!! This week we are joined by Chris Reyes from the Story 2 Screen Podcast to discuss his pick, the 2002 dystopian action film, Equilibrium. Recen Films: Chris, The Passion of Joan of Arc 4:49, J. Edgar 6:34, Safety Last 8:20 James, Fargo TV Series 8:50, The Devil's Candy 10:41, We Are Still Here 11:25 Gabriel, Game of Thrones 12:18 Main Review 18:43 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/underratedpodcast/?fref=ts Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/Underrated_Pod Visit our Website for past episodes https://underratedpodcast.com/ Gabriel’s YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyoYniiiGukWYP6So6k4llA Letterboxd Profiles James, https://letterboxd.com/jlhamri/ Gabriel, https://letterboxd.com/gabrielgreen/
For those of you that have been following the podcast for the past few years, you know that we've that we've talked about the movie Cruising on several occasions. We've made references to it and threatened to cover the film. Well, we finally tackle Cruising in this episode! We also get into 2017's The Devil's Candy and A Dark Song, two films that have been getting critical accolades. We kick the episode off with our two cents regarding the Twin Peaks finale.
Andrew quit because his brother wouldn't listen to the podcast. I don't blame either one, not one bit. I don't even listen to it. I just record this shit. https://twitter.com/watchalonepod I talked about a bunch of shit off my Letterboxd. I went on a horror binge. 1) The Devil's Candy - 2015 Netflix horror - had promise, but squandered it. I would watch another of this guy's films. I don't recommend it. 2) From a House on Willow Street - don't watch this trash 3) Creep - 2014 documentary-style flick about a cat and mouse game between a beta male and his bizarre gig employer. Moral of the story - get a career, not a gig where you can get stalked for sport. I recommend it. 4) Hush - 2016 survival horror flick about a deafmute trying to survive a bored murderer's attempts to kill her in her cabin. I really recommend it. 5) Our Mother's House - 1967, lovely pairing to Mary Poppins about kids who descend into religious mania and powermongering when their mother dies and they fear being sent to the orphanage, as well they should: kids get raped and sold by the state there. Need I say I recommend it? 6) The Transfiguration - 2016 vampire film about an autistic serial killer living in the projects; I liked most of it. Lot of uncomfortable, tense moments that drag you through the mind of a killer. I would recommend it. 7) Ingrid Goes West - 2017 stalker film about a social media retard; I liked it. I'd definitely recommend it. 8) Austeria - beautiful, eventime-lit 1982 war film about a Polish Jewish pogrom in 1918 and the interesting mystical antics of a batch of Hasids who dance their way to doom during it. Great movie. 9) My Night at Maud's - beautiful love story about the damning power of faith and humanist love. Five stars on my Letterboxd. I definitely recommend.
Episode 96 offers up a dish of everyone’s favorite. No, not candy corn, “The Devil’s Candy”(2015)! First, your hosts welcome guest host Brian (and his giant ice cube) to the show then talk about a bunch of stuff they’ve watched lately. Jolyon got into some black action movies and even uncovered a Pam Grier movie he hadn’t seen. And, as you might expect, there was an “Exorcism” and a “Purge” movie thrown in for good measure. Will is into anything that could be re-titled “Pardon My Murder” and offers “The Trial of The Incredible Hulk” (1989) as a perfect movie. Your host suggest James Bond replacements and then finally discuss the movie. Did the tracksuit guy overbuy when he got the Flying V guitar and the amp? Are those whispering Devil voices more realistic than the family dynamics we witness in this movie. Richard doesn’t care about any of that, he’d watch them in just about any story set-up in any genre you could name. As movie discussion goes a little off the rails, we find out what Will likes to hand out to Trick-or-Treaters! Find us on Instagram, where we are @chewingthescenery or easily find us on Facebook. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. When the Australian horror film, The Loved Ones, was released a few years back, it received a lot of acclaim while doing the festival circuits. Having taken a few years to reach North America, the film made an impression on many genre fans. Now, the director, Sean Byrne, is back with his first American feature film. Like The Loved Ones, The Devil’s Candy also received splendid reviews. A young couple and their teenage daughter purchase a house in the rural outskirts of Austin, Texas. The father, an artist, begins producing a giant painting with incredible detail yet doesn’t seem to remember the time spent while painting. Meanwhile, a strange man obsessed with guitar rock appears on their farmer’s porch stating that he was the prior owner of the property. Soon mysterious things begin to happen causing the family to believe that the entire property may have a mysterious past. Written and directed by Sean Byrne, the film oddly was cut down in length from its original festival run to a quick 75 minutes. Dark Discussions takes a look at this highly anticipated follow up to The Loved Ones and gives their opinion on the film. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

Welcome to a much-talked about movie that Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan finally get to review: The Devil's Candy. After years of Chris hyping it up, it finally has been released and we take our time going through Sean Byrne's follow-up to The Loved Ones. How does it compare to his previous film, both in quality and tonally? Why do we feel bad for Pruitt Taylor Vince? Will there ever be another horror movie that handles metal with this much class? This and so much more await you in the podcast below. But wait, there's more! Nobody remakes like Gaston! Which is why Chris saw Beauty & The Beast to see how the live action adaptation of the Disney classic holds up. He also saw The Chamber, the directorial debut of Ben Parker which takes place entirely in a small submarine. Meanwhile, Dylan saw the sequel to the surprise hit, Goon, entitled Goon: Last of the Enforcers - which happens to be Jay Baruchel's directorial debut, too. There's also a bunch of news to discuss, as well as the blu-ray releases of the week. It's a lot of garbage, but our pick of the week is the Criterion release of Multiple Maniacs from John Waters. Next week, we'll be back with a review of Chips because there are too many movies we really don't want to see and somehow we're totally okay with Chips. Film Fallout is a weekly podcast about film and television. Every week, Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan discuss news happening in the industry, blu-ray releases coming out this week, what they’ve been watching, and then a review of one movie. It's King Kong vs. Chris & Dylan as Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan take on the latest movie featuring the titular ape: Kong: Skull Island. Things get slightly heated but not really as we discuss the movie's tone, how it stands as a monster movie, and why using Apocalypse Now as a framework for a King Kong movie works and doesn't work. Chris also saw the new film The Assignment (formerly titled (Re)assignment), which has Michelle Rodriguez play a male assassin who is changed into a female against her will. So yeah, plenty to say about that. There's a bunch of Blu-ray releases this week too, including our pick of the week, Mondo's steelbook release of Ghost in the Shell. We also cover the reactions out of SXSW, including movies like Baby Driver, Atomic Blonde and Song to Song. So find out if we care about another Terrence Malick movie. The first half of the Melbourne International Film Festival has flown by, and I've already seen some great films like Cosmos, Paterson and The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki. Among the films I've seen, though, there's been a fantastic selection of horror films, and I thought I'd spotlight four of them: three narrative features, all by first-time filmmakers, and a documentary. First up, The Eyes of My Mother. An American film, but with occasional Portuguese dialogue, it's one of the first films I got to see and it's still stayed with me. One day, a little girl witnesses some terrible violence in her home; an intruder shows up but is subsequently overpowered, and from that moment that violence seeps through to her brain as she grows up and her life spirals into chilling psychopathic behaviour. Shot in black-and-white, there's a wistful, melancholy, poetic tone enshrouding the on-screen horror. With echoes of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the film delves into some very dark places, both explicit and not. But despite the disturbing and violent developments the film manages to retain a beautiful, almost meditative atmosphere, and our sympathy for the central character never leaves even though she's doing awful, awful things. I mean, all she wants is a family... in a way... A very promising debut by filmmaker Nicolas Pesce. Maybe hug a loved one after this. Next up, there's Baskin. Another highly disturbing horror film, this time from Turkey, written and directed by Can Evrenol. A group of police officers receive a distress call in a remote building and head over to investigate. Once there they discover some truly hellish stuff. The film's got lots of graphic gore and screaming, with a shudderingly creepy main villain. The visuals are striking and colourful and the score is particularly vivid. Unfortunately, there's not much of anything else. The pacing is uneven and I didn't really find myself being invested in any of the characters, so despite several really interesting and horrifying sequences it all in all made for unengaging viewing. Some great ideas in this, but not entirely well-executed. Moving slightly east again we have Under the Shadow, by Babak Anvari, set in Iran in the 1980s, after the Iranian revolution and during the Iran-Iraq conflicts. It centres on a woman and her husband and young daughter living in an apartment block in Tehran. Not only is there the constant threat of missile attacks but some strange, nightmarish things start to occur, and when the father is called away to military service the mother and daughter are left to deal with the supernatural dread that plagues them. Under the Shadow does a fantastic job of channeling serious political and parental fears into a deliciously slow-burning terror, the tension building and building, holding you captive until it explodes in the final ten to fifteen minutes, unleashing full-scale horror. All throughout it stays gripping, then right at the end it starts ripping. Excellently shot with some unsettling camera movements and production design that captures the period as well as the evil closing in. Probably my favourite of the three. Finally, I saw Fear Itself, a documentary on horror films written and directed by Charlie Lyne. Or rather, it's not so much a documentary as a cine-essay, a stream of thoughts on horror films and the way that they relate to real human fears and anxieties. Impressive in scope and mesmerising in equal measure, the film itself is essentially a collage, in that it consists entirely of edited-together footage from existing horror films, and hypnotic narration over the top that takes you on an engrossing journey through humanity's darkness. The range of films chosen is admirable, encompassing a vast range of horror cinema from across the world and throughout history, even using some films that aren't traditionally considered horror films but which have certain elements that illustrate the points that the filmmaker is trying to make about horror films, which in turn ties back to the points he makes about humanity. And the exploration of the themes is engrossing, thoughtful and at times quite personal. It's transfixing and thought-provoking and highly recommended not just for horror fans but for anyone interested in the depths of the human soul. And that's all the horror films at the festival that I've been able to see so far, but there's more to come! A few I'm looking forward to are Killing Ground and The Devil's Candy, both by Australian directors, as well as The Lure and The Love Witch, which from what I've heard are very very weird, and I can't wait. There's still another week left of the festival, so get out there and start shitting your pants in terror. I'll be in the cinema with you, toilet paper in hand. Till next time, see you there... Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Okay, a new year has arrived and now being mid-January, the first genre films have reached theaters and VOD. Films like Body, The Forest, and The Boy have had their January release. Yet going forward, more films are already on their way including some big budget flicks, independent cinema, as well as festival films that are now making it to wide release. Do you like super heroes? Well some humongous films (both DC and Marvel) are coming. Zack Snyder's Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Captain America: Civil Wars, Doctor Strange, Deadpool, and Suicide Squad are only a handful. Sequels and reboots? How about Star Wars: Rogue One, The Conjuring 2, Independence Day: Resurgence, Godzilla: Resurgence, and Annabelle 2 to name a few. New festival circuit horror? Films like Vvitch, February, and the Devil's Candy are coming. And intense thrillers? They include Triple 9, The Green Room, and Jack Reacher 2. As co-host Mike has said, many of the best films to come we may not even know yet. Independent flicks, low budget horror, and foreign films just appear on VOD or theaters and overwhelm everyone. What is the next Ex Machina, These Final Hours, or It Follows? Dark Discussions tries to figure out all this while giving their thoughts on what we know. Get a pen and paper ready and start writing down the titles we go through. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

Dylan moderates Chris as he discusses the films he saw at this year's 40th Toronto International Film Festival, and Chris's first ever time there. We discuss a lot of movies, you can find what ones and when in the podcast down in the show notes. Just a side note though that we recorded a podcast for The Martian where we also discussed The Walk and Sicario but that may have been lost to the void, and since we're pretty busy people right now, that's not gonna be re-recorded. However, Chris wrote a review for The Walk so you can read that if you'd like. Next week we will be doing something, we're not sure what yet as we both definitely do not want to see Pan.
