Send me a text! I'd love to know what you're thinking!Shalom is a biblical concept that goes far beyond our usual understanding of “peace.” It's about healing, fulfillment, and every part of life coming together as God intended. For ministry leaders, this vision of shalom changes everything about how we lead, serve, and even think about the mission of the church. In this episode, Terry A. Smith, author of The Lord Give You Peace, explores what shalom really means, why it's at the heart of God's mission, and how we as ministry leaders can become bringers of Shalom in and beyond our churches.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Markus Watson invites Terry A. Smith to share how the concept of shalom became important in his life and faith.Terry A. Smith explains that encountering Tim Keller's writing helped him see shalom as the way God intended things to be.Shalom means more than just "peace"—it encompasses wholeness, flourishing, harmony, prosperity, and well-being.Terry A. Smith describes shalom as holistic well-being, productive flourishing, and happy fulfillment.Shalom involves every dimension of life: psychological, spiritual, physical, and relational wellness.Flourishing in shalom is not passive but should lead to positive, productive fruit in the world.Fulfillment includes experiencing deep happiness and contentment rooted in hope and connection with God.Markus Watson reflects that God's mission for Creation is to restore shalom on every level—between humans and God, with each other, within ourselves, and with creation.Terry A. Smith affirms that the presence of brokenness and lack of shalom is due to the fall and the "vandalization" of God's intentions.People can still taste and participate in shalom, even while living in a broken world.Terry A. Smith highlights that many biblical promises of shalom are directed at people in exile or less-than-ideal circumstances, encouraging hope and action. The church's calling includes being a model of unity and peace, creating opportunities for shalom in relationships and community.Terry A. Smith describes his church's intentional pursuit of diversity, unity, and partnership with local organizations as active shalom-making.Creating an environment of hospitable leadership fosters a culture where people and their God-given dreams flourish.Leaders who embody shalom can better guide others through change, adversity, and growth by bringing wholeness and well-being into every situation.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Website – terryasmith.comThe Life Christian ChurchBooks mentioned:The Lord Give You Peace, by Terry A. Transcription Marc Schelske 0:00Hey friends, I'm Marc Alan Schelske, and this is The Apprenticeship Way, a podcast about spiritual growth following the way of Jesus. This is episode 51: "Faith when you don't feel faithful." TODAY'S SPONSOR Today's podcast is made possible by Journaling for Spiritual Growth. This is my new book. It launched in November of 2022. So it's just a few months old, but it's already finding its people. And that is really exciting to me, especially since I knew going into it that this book had a pretty small target audience. A few weeks ago, I was talking to a woman who read the book and had grown up in the church, and her comment after reading Journaling for Spiritual Growth was how relieved she felt. For her, this little book helped her untangle her picture of God, and find a healthier way to pursue spiritual growth. I teared up, listening to her. Here's an Amazon review I want to share with you this really moved me: "I wish this book had been around when I was at the start of my deconstruction process, trying to form a new connection to my last shred of spiritual practice with the Bible. After reading this book, I can tell you it is something special. I found the book clear, focused, and transparent in all its intentions. It became my friend in a way as I explored the prompts. It makes room for one's personal story and experience. Give it a try. I hope it gracefully surprises you as it did me." As the author who wrote this book, I could not ask for higher praise than that. This little book is a six-week process to gently guide you in building a lasting and sustainable journaling practice where you'll experience spiritual and emotional growth. I intended to write something helpful and healing. And if that sounds intriguing to you, you can get it on all the online bookstores, or you can buy a signed copy directly from me at my website. Everyone's faith journey evolves. Many of us have been deconstructing and reconstructing, tearing down practices and beliefs that don't work as we seek to rebuild something that does.     Matt Tebbe and Ben Sternke, authors of Having the Mind of Christ: Eight Axioms to Cultivate a Robust Faith, discovered, through their own personal journeys and as they guided others, that many were becoming disillusioned and needed help reconstructing their faith.   They turned to Jesus as the model and started to see that Jesus operated under some basic assumptions about God and his Kingdom. As they dug and learned, they identified eight foundational principles that Jesus assumed and operated under – starting with love. They say the first foundational principle this way: God is love, so it's all about love.   It seems logical on the surface but dig deeper, and you'll quickly see that we may believe this is true, but we don't really live it.   Matt and Ben are cofounders of Gravity Leadership and co-pastors at The Table in Indianapolis. Listen in as we talk about their story, why they wrote this book, why love matters, and hear their insights on Mark 3.   GREAT NEWS: IVP is giving So Much More Listeners 30% off and free shipping until 5.17.23 with the code MUCHMORE You can get a copy here: https://www.ivpress.com/having-the-mind-of-christ   Some highlights from our conversation: Matt tells us about his journey of deconstruction and how it created dissonance in his life that he could no longer ignore. He says: It's not working anymore, but I can't quit Jesus Ben also shares his story and how he saw leaders failing. This made him question: “Is there a way to do ministry that's rooted in love?” We talk about how they decided on the eight axioms and what they are. We dive into the first one: God is love, so it's all about love. And if we believe this, how many parts of our life do we live as if it's really all about love? We talk about some of the practices they offer in the book as opportunities for us to live like these axioms are true. We end processing through Mark 3 and what it meant to both Matt and Ben. A golden nugget toward the end of our conversation is when we discuss our real pain. Sometimes what God is up to is different than we would think because the goal is eternity. Hopefully, we can say on the other side of the experience: I wouldn't wish this on a friend, But I can't imagine having not gone through it. We wrap up with a discussion on our meditation passage from Mark 3. Why was Jesus angry? And what was the man's role in this whole scenario?   You can connect with Ben at: https://bensternke.com/ On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ben.sternke.56/ On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bensternk3/ On Twitter: https://twitter.com/bensternke   You can connect with Matt at: https://gravityleadership.com/matt-tebbe/ On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/matttebbe/ On Twitter: https://twitter.com/matttebbe   You can find Jodie at http://www.jodieniznik.com/ Instagram @creatingspaceforgod Facebook @JodieGNiznik Download free sample chapters from Jodie's Bible studies here. It was the Sabbath. Jesus was in the synagogue and a man needed healing. What would he do?   The religious leaders were looking for a reason to accuse and discredit Jesus. If he healed the man, Jesus would break the letter of the law.   But what about the intent of the law? And what about the heart of God, who created the law?   So Jesus asks, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” The religious leaders were silent. They had no answer. They became trapped by their pride and misunderstanding.   But Jesus acts in love. He heals.   As you meditate on Mark 3, allow the Spirit to help you notice something from these words that applies to your own life. Once you've listened to this Scripture Experience podcast, head over to the next episode and listen to the interview with pastors and authors Matt Tebbe and Ben Sternke. This week, I am excited to welcome Matt Tebbe and Ben Sterke to the table. Matt and Ben are the cofounders of Gravity Leadership, an organization focused on transformational leadership and discipleship. We chat about how in order to evolve we need more than a change in practice: we need a change in paradigm. Through eight transformative axioms found in their book Having the Mind of Christ: Eight Axioms to Cultivate a Robust Faith, Matt and Ben lay out a guide to connect with Christ that helps us be open more fully to God, ourselves, and others. By putting on new glasses so to speak, we can embrace the healing and change God wants for our lives. Matt, Ben and I dive into the important stuff: letting go to accept God's love, practicing self-honesty to invite healing, recovering (in many different ways) while walking a path of faith, and accepting ourselves and others for who they are – fully. Here's what we connect on: How to achieve connectedness, and not correctness, with God The healing power found in rigorous self-honesty Waking up to God, who is already here and present Learning that God shows up with unconditional love and acceptance in our messy reality, even when we aren't able to show up for ourselves. Looking past shame, fear and doubt to see the truth about ourselves by trusting in God. Today, I'm sharing a recent conversation with Matt Tebbe and Ben Sternke about their book Having the Mind of Christ. In it, they talk about what they call eight axioms for cultivating a robust faith. In a day when so many are disappointed with the faith they were given by the church of their early formation, we need a more vital vision of the life to which Jesus is actually inviting us. Too often, our assumptions, our expectations, even our values are shaped more by popular cultural voices than they are by the beautiful ways of God's kingdom. This is a big part of the reason that Unhurried Living exists. We really believe the pace of the kingdom of Jesus is very different than the cultural one that surrounds us. Our guests, Matt Tebbe and Ben Sternke, are the cofounders of Gravity Leadership, an organization focused on transformational leadership and discipleship. They provide coaching, consulting, and workshops for pastors and ministry leaders. They are also copastors of a church in Indianapolis called The Table and cohosts of the Gravity Leadership podcast. Connect with Matt and Ben on InstagramMatt Tebbe and Ben Sternke

Having the Mind of Christ. Today, Mike and Tim sit down with Pastors, podcasters and leadership trainers Ben Sternke and Matt Tebbe, to discuss their new book "Having the Mind of Christ: Eight Axioms to Cultivate a Robust Faith." The group talks about their Gravity Leadership program, both the podcast and their leadership training, as well as the church they founded, The Table, in Indiana. What lead them to plant the church? What did they see in a previous church experience and how did they change those habits? What does it look like to 'have the mind of Christ?' The book, through 8 'axioms' that offer a new set of lenses to see through, looks at common pitfalls within our well practiced discipleship efforts, with a focus on "practices rather than doing the deeper work of learning a new paradigm." Sternke and Tebbe advocate for a new way of seeing ourselves, the World and God through each of these practices. Mike and Tim also spend time discussing an email sent in from a Pastor and listener of the pod who is struggling with wether or not to leave the pastorate. Where is the line between cruciformity and martyrdom? When is it time to leave? What is irreparable and what is worth fighting for? How can Pastors lead when congregates offer only ultimatums? Episode 045 - Let's Normalize Being Wrong (With Matt Tebbe) I grew up in a faith tradition where being right was essential. It's what kept us in community. It's what we thought honored God. For many other reasons--temperament, trauma, and even privilege--being right became an identity issue for me. Then I heard Matt Tebbe suggest that we need to normalize being wrong. For some of us this is the medicine we need. Show Notes "Let's normalize being wrong. He has experience as a youth pastor, a bi-vocational church planter, and working on a team at a large church to transition it from a Sunday-centric worship service to a discipleship and mission paradigm. He has written for Leadership Journal, Shattered Magazine, and contributed to the book “What Pastors Wish Their Congregations Knew” by Kurt Fredrickson and Cameron Lee. He's also been a featured writer at Missio Alliance and The V3 Movement. Transcription Marc Schelske  0:00   Did you know you don't have to correct other people? Did you know you can be wrong, and the world won't end? Hey, friends, I'm Marc Alen Schelske. This is the apprenticeship way, a podcast about spiritual growth following the way of Jesus. This is Episode 45. Let's normalize being wrong.  TODAY'S SPONSOR Now, before we jump into that conversation, I'd like to tell you that today's podcast is made possible by The Writers Advance. I'm a writer, I write this podcast. I write blog posts. I write sermons, I've written three books. I've got two manuscripts in the oven right now. I think I've written something close to a million words at this point. And all of that writing, I have learned that there really is only one significant obstacle to writing just one. Life. Life and all its business, obligations, responsibilities, chores, people who need you to do stuff right now. And all that stuff, it takes time. And even when you sit down to write and try to focus at all intrudes into the space into your emotions.  So, one of the disciplines that I have learned over the years of writing is that periodically, I need to get out of my life in order to focus. Not an out-of-body experience, I just need to get off the grid, I need to be out of the reach of my schedule and phone, I need to retreat so that I can advance my writing. That's why I created the writer's advance.  This is a very unique event for writers.

S1E2 -   On this second episode of the Intersection Podcast, we talked to Dr. David Fitch of Northern Seminary about the practice of the Eucharist and how it connects to discipleship and mission through David's language of "faithful presence." Then the Rev. Matt Tebbe and Rev. Ben Sternke share how they are trying to connect the Eucharist and presence to the work they are doing in Missional Communities, and the challenges to discipleship and mission that they have encountered.
