THE LONG WALK follows an old scavenger living on the fringes of a near-future society exploits a ghostly companion's ability to traverse time, hoping to prevent his mother's suffering from a terminal illness. Với mùa đầu tiên, liên hoan phim Đông Dương đầu tiên Si Loin Si Proche (Tuy Xa Mà Gần) ra mắt khán giả với những bộ phim đến từ các nghệ sỹ của 3 nước Việt Nam, Lào, Cam Bốt, đưa người xem vào một hành trình điện ảnh dọc theo dòng sông Mê Kông, tại liên hoan phim được tổ chức bên cạnh dòng sông Marne. Liên hoan phim mong muốn quảng bá sự sáng tạo điện ảnh từ 3 nước, đặc biệt là từ thế hệ làm phim trẻ. Trong sảnh rạp chiếu phim của trung tâm văn hoá La ferme du buisson*, dòng người qua lại tấp nập cứ mỗi khi một bộ phim nào đó kết thúc và một bộ phim khác tiếp nối. Mọi người xếp hàng chờ tới lượt kiểm tra chứng nhận tiêm chủng để vào phòng chiếu phim. Một cô vui vẻ khoe vé, nói với nhân viên kiểm tra : “Đây là lần thứ tư tôi đến xem rồi đấy!”. Ngay sau đó là ông Thivinh, đã rời khỏi Lào, định cư tại Pháp từ 45 năm nay. Đây là lần đầu tiên ông xem một bộ phim bằng tiếng Lào trong một rạp chiếu phim ở Pháp. Khi nghe tin có liên hoan chiếu những bộ phim được sản xuất tại quê hương của mình, ông không bỏ lỡ cơ hội này. Ông xúc động nói : Tôi rất vui mừng bởi vì tôi đã xem một bộ phim mà diễn viên nói tiếng Lào, đã lâu lắm rồi tôi không được xem những bộ phim như vậy.  Nằm ở vùng ngoại ô Paris của Pháp, tại Noisiel, bên cạnh dòng sông Marne, trung tâm văn hoá La ferme du buisson lần đầu tiên đăng cai tổ chức liên hoan phim Si Loin Si Proche, tạm dịch là Tuy Xa Mà Gần, sự kiện nhằm tôn vinh tài năng và sự sáng tạo của những nghệ sỹ đến từ 3 nước Việt Nam, Lào, Cam Bốt. Trong vòng 4 ngày (từ ngày 27 đến 30 tháng Giêng năm 2022), liên hoan giới thiệu hàng chục bộ phim ngắn, phim điện ảnh, phim tài liệu, đa số đều chưa được ra mắt tại Pháp. Một số đạo diễn của các bộ phim trình chiếu cũng có mặt. Bên lề sự kiện, còn có các hoạt động như triển lãm về con người ở sông Mê Kông của nhiếp ảnh gia Lam Duc Hien, các hoạt động giải trí như múa lân, trình diễn Việt Võ Đạo, các lớp dạy nấu ăn những món châu Á v.v... Sông Mê Kông hòa vào dòng chảy của sông Marne, tạo thành cuộc gặp gỡ giữa 3 nền điện ảnh, làm nên “ngã ba văn hoá Đông Dương”, tuy xa mà gần Điều kiện làm phim khó khăn tạo lên ngôn ngữ điện ảnh riêng Ý tưởng tổ chức liên hoan phim Đông Dương xuất phát từ một chuyến hợp tác với đoàn làm phim tại Lào của đạo diễn kiêm nhiếp ảnh gia Nara Keo-Kosal cách nay vài năm. Với tư cách là giám đốc nghệ thuật của liên hoan phim, ông Nara Keo-Kosal thường xuyên làm việc tại Cam Bốt, Lào và Việt Nam, và có cái nhìn tổng thể về thực trạng sáng tạo điện ảnh ở những quốc gia này. Ông giải thích thêm :  “Trong quá trình làm phim, tôi bắt đầu hiểu được các điều kiện mà đoàn làm phim phải tuân theo. Họ bị kiểm duyệt hoàn toàn. Các đạo diễn bắt buộc phải nộp kịch bản cho Ủy ban Điện ảnh Lào xem trước. Ủy ban sẽ đưa ra quyết định có được phép sản xuất hay không. Lúc đó, đoàn làm phim của chúng tôi đã nhận được đồng thuận, nhưng Ủy ban Điện ảnh đã cử người đến, có mặt tại tất cả các buổi quay phim. Người này đến để giám sát chúng tôi. Sau vụ việc này, tôi thấy rằng những đạo diễn trẻ Lào, họ vẫn thể hiện được những điều mà họ muốn nói qua phim của họ, bằng cách đi đường vòng. Và cũng chính bởi vậy mà họ đã thành công sáng tạo ra một loại ngôn ngữ khác, vượt qua hàng rào kiểm duyệt. Việc kết nối điện ảnh của 3 nước với nhau, là vì cả 3 đều chia sẻ một trang sử chung với Pháp.”      Trang sử chung này cũng được chia sẻ với khu vực Seine et Marne mà trung tâm văn hoá La ferme du buisson đặt trụ sở. Sau khi Chiến tranh Việt Nam chấm dứt, phía đông Paris là một trong những địa điểm tiếp nhận di dân từ Đông Dương. Cộng đồng di dân dần lớn mạnh tại những thành phố như Torcy, Noisiel, Lognes, Noisy-Le-Grand, kéo theo đó là các hoạt động văn hoá nghệ thuật thể thao phục vụ cộng đồng này.  Ý tưởng của ông Nara, nhằm quảng bá, tạo chỗ đứng, đặc biệt là cho những đạo diễn trẻ mới nổi của điện ảnh 3 nước Đông Dương, ngay lập tức đã thuyết phục được giám đốc trung tâm văn hoá La ferme du buisson ông Dominique Toulat, tham gia đồng tổ chức liên hoan phim. "Cộng đồng người đến từ 3 nước Lào Việt Nam, Cam Bốt tại đây là cộng đồng Đông Dương lớn nhất ở Pháp. Họ thường xuyên đến sinh hoạt tại trung tâm văn hoá. Và chúng tôi rất quan tâm đến nghệ thuật và sáng tạo của 3 nước này. Chúng tôi cũng hiểu rằng rất nhiều phim không được trình chiếu ở rạp tại Pháp. Chúng ta có thể xem những phim được sản xuất từ 3 nước này ở các liên hoan phim nhưng rất khó để có thể đưa vào rạp của Pháp. Chính vì vậy, chúng tôi mong muốn tạo đối thoại giữa những bộ phim. Chúng tôi đặt cược vào những khán giả, những người có mối liên hệ nào đó, có thể là cá nhân hay gia đình với 3 nước này, và cả vào những người không có liên hệ gì nhưng họ muốn đến tham gia vào một cuộc gặp gỡ với điện ảnh, đến để khám phá phim. Họ có thể yêu thích cũng như chán ghét một số bộ phim. Họ cũng có thể thấy hào hứng với một số phim nhưng lại thấy tức giận với một số khác. Theo tôi, đó chính là nguyên lý hoạt động của một liên hoan phim, chính là việc tạo đối thoại giữa các bộ phim. Chúng tôi đặt tên cho liên hoan phim là “Tuy xa mà gần”, giống như cuộc đối thoại giữa ở đây và ở đó, giữa hiện tại và một thời điểm nào khác, mà thực ra nơi đó không xa đến thế." Giữa những phim thành công và phim “cấm chiếu” Về tiêu chí chọn lựa phim được chiếu tại liên hoan, ban tổ chức cho biết cố gắng tạo cân bằng về số lượng của các phim giữa ba quốc gia. Tuy nhiên điều này không dễ dàng gì, bởi mỗi một quốc gia mang một màu sắc điện ảnh của riêng mình. Thêm vào đó, điện ảnh Việt Nam lâu đời hơn, có nhiều phim được sản xuất, nên có nhiều lựa chọn hơn so với hai quốc gia còn lại. Liên hoan phim Tuy Xa Mà Gần giới thiệu những cái tên quen thuộc như Trần Anh Hùng, Lâm Lê, hay những đạo diễn mới nổi như Trịnh Đinh Lê Minh hay Trần Thanh Huy. Điện ảnh Lào ra đời muộn hơn và chủ yếu xoay quanh hai thể loại : phim kinh dị với bộ phim nổi bật do Mattie Do làm tiên phong và điện ảnh “làn sóng mới” qua tác phẩm của Anysay Keola bằng việc phân định ranh giới với các bộ phim hành động cũ, nhất là các tác phẩm mang tính tuyên truyền. Đối với điện ảnh Cam Bốt, người ta biết đến các bộ phim do đạo diễn kỳ cựu Rithy Panh thực hiện, kể về những nỗi đau chiến tranh, chấn thương tâm lý, những tội ác mà chế độ Khmer Đỏ gây ra, như bộ phim "The missing picture, Irradiate". Rithy Panh là người mang lại cho điện ảnh Cam Bốt đề cử giải Oscar đầu tiên. Gần đây, điện ảnh nước này xuất hiện thêm một loại hình mới tập trung vào những vấn đề mà thế hệ trẻ Cam Bốt đang phải đối mặt, với tác phẩm Diamond Island do đạo diễn trẻ Davy Chou thực hiện. Ban tổ chức mong muốn đưa ra một cái nhìn toàn cảnh cho mỗi nền điện ảnh. Đồng tổ chức liên hoan phim Đông Dương Tuy xa mà gần, ông Dominique Toulat giải thích :  “Chúng tôi giới thiệu những bộ phim đã gặt hái nhiều thành công tại nước sở tại và những bộ phim với sự đa dạng về thể loại cũng như đạo diễn. Ví dụ như phim “Thưa Mẹ con Đi”, bộ phim này đã làm cháy vé nhiều rạp chiếu phim ở Việt Nam nhưng lại không chiếu ở Pháp. Hay bộ phim Vị của đạo diễn Lê Bảo bị cấm chiếu ở Việt Nam. Hai thái cực như vậy ảnh hưởng đến lựa chọn của chúng tôi. Có thể nói đó là những lựa chọn cá nhân, nhưng nhìn chung những chủ đề mà chúng tôi lựa chọn từ cả 3 quốc gia thường nói về những mối quan hệ như : Quan hệ của các nước đối với Trung Quốc, quan hệ giữa đời sống thành thị và nông thôn, hay về giới trẻ. Chúng tôi rất quan tâm đến những chủ đề liên quan đến thế hệ trẻ tại các nước này.”  “Không phải để hối tiếc quá khứ thuộc địa của Pháp” Tại liên hoan, một số khán giả ngần ngại đề cập đến từ Đông Dương (hay Indochine bằng tiếng Pháp) mà thay bằng phim Đông Nam Á. Vì theo họ, Đông Dương mang một nghĩa tiêu cực vì ám chỉ đến việc Pháp đã gộp 3 nước riêng biệt thành một khối dưới thời thuộc địa. Việc hội tụ điện ảnh của 3 nước Đông Dương cũ, tại một liên hoan phim diễn ra tại Pháp, ông Dominique Toulat nhấn mạnh rằng : đây không phải là một liên hoan phim “để hối tiếc quá khứ thuộc địa của Pháp” mà đúng hơn là để nói đến những mối liên hệ của hiện tại, những mối liên hệ này có thể thúc đẩy sự sáng tạo nghệ thuật qua các bộ phim. Cũng về vấn đề này, một khán giả tham dự liên hoan phim cùng gia đình chia sẻ : “Tôi thấy một liên hoan phim dành riêng cho các nghệ sỹ từ 3 nước Đông Dương thật tuyệt vời. Bởi cho đến nay, tại các rạp chiếu phim lớn, người ta thường chỉ quan tâm đến những bộ phim từ Hàn Quốc, Trung Quốc, Nhật Bản. Nhưng chúng ta lại không có nhiều chỗ đứng trong những rạp chiếu phim như vậy, thế nên tôi thấy việc hội tụ các nước cùng với nhau sẽ tạo ra chỗ đứng vững vàng hơn cho các nước Đông Nam Á.” Trước mỗi buổi chiếu phim, Nara hoặc Dominique cùng với một số đạo diễn có mặt tại liên hoan giới thiệu về bộ phim sắp chiếu. Do tình hình dịch bệnh nên nhiều đạo diễn vắng mặt. Đạo diễn Lê Lâm, được biết đến là một trong những đạo diễn người Việt đầu tiên được liên hoan phim Cannes lựa chọn qua bộ phim Long Vân Khánh Hội. Đến với liên hoan Tuy Xa Mà Gần, ông Lê Lâm thay mặt các đạo diễn của những bộ phim Việt Nam được trình chiếu tại liên hoan, giới thiệu bối cảnh xã hội của từng bộ phim.   Trước khi chiếu, tôi giới thiệu cho khán giả hiểu hết các vấn đề phim Việt Nam, trả lời những câu hỏi vì sao… Chẳng hạn như tôi lấy câu chuyện của phim Song Lang, nếu khán giả không biết đến câu chuyện cổ tích Mỵ Châu - Trọng Thuỷ, thì họ không thể hiểu hết những thâm thuý về câu chuyển kể trong phim Song Lang. Tối nay tôi giới thiệu về phim "Vị" nữa, nhất là bộ phim này có một vấn đề: Đó là bị cấm chiếu ở Việt Nam.  Đôi lời về bộ phim "Vị", là bộ phim đầu tay của đạo diễn trẻ Lê Bảo. Bộ phim đã tạo nhiều “sóng gió” trong công luận thời gian vừa qua. Phim "Vị" được công chiếu lần đầu tại liên hoan phim Berlin lần thứ 71 vào đầu năm 2021 và giành giải “Special Jury Award” ở hạng mục “Encounters” - ý tưởng mới lạ. Bộ phim cũng giành được giải ở hạng mục “Điện ảnh trẻ' tại giải thưởng Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA), giải thưởng điện ảnh thường niên tại Úc và chiếu tại một số quốc gia khác. "Vị" kể về một người đàn ông Nigeria, rời quê hương đến thành phố Hồ Chí Minh lập nghiệp, làm cầu thủ bóng đá nhưng sau đó bị chấn thương và phải rời đội bóng. Người này sau đó chuyển qua làm thợ cắt tóc và sống cùng với 4 người phụ nữ Việt Nam khác. Vào tháng 7/2021, Cục Điện ảnh Việt Nam đã ra quyết định cấm chiếu tại Việt Nam do có quá nhiều hình ảnh khoả thân, bị coi là “vi phạm thuần phong mỹ tục”. Bộ phim sau đó đã chuyển quyền sở hữu và quyền tác giả sang một đơn vị sản xuất có trụ sở ở Singapore. Quay trở lại với liên hoan phim Đông Dương, giám đốc nghệ thuật, Nara Keo-Kosal cho biết không muốn thiết lập một hệ thống giải thưởng như các liên hoan phim thường làm, vì với ban tổ chức, Tuy Xa Mà Gần giống như một cuộc “giao lưu điện ảnh” của các nghệ sỹ đến từ Đông Dương. Helen Lõhmus - eestlannast hunt Kriimsilm, kes on vallutanud filmimaailma Helen Lõhmus on kõige rohkem töötanud produtsendi ja tootmisdisainerina. Tema karjäär on olnud mitmekesine, viies teda Venemaale  pärast pakkumise saamist Walt Disneylt, ning hiljem ka Laosesse, kus tal tekkis võimalus töötada koos maailmakuulsa filmirežissööriga Mattie Do. Kuigi Helen Lõhmust teatakse kõige rohkem produtsendina, on ta mitme tööga tegelenud. Tema väsimatu loomus ja tahe mõelda teistmoodi on tal alati võimaldanud liikuda omas suunas. Pärast õppimist Ameerika ülikoolis, naases Helen Eestisse, et teha algus televisiooni ja filmindusega. Esmalt osutus see väljakutseks, sest meeskonna juhina tundis ta suurt vastutust. Helen pidi tõdema, et oma teekonnal jõudis ta ka murdepunktini, kust edasi liikumine tundus raske. Siiski leidis Helen taas iseenda tänu heale meeskonnale ning tulemused ei jäänud tulemata. Ta oli Walt Disney telesarja “После школы” tootmis- ja kostüümidisainer ning Laose-Eesti-Prantsuse-Slovakkia koostööfilmi “Kallis õeke” produtsent. Film on esimene Laose film, mis on kaastoodetud Euroopaga ja mis oli esitatud Oscarile. Film esilinastus aastal 2016 ja üks peaosalistest oli Tambet Tuisk. Recently criticism has been focused at Alamo Drafthouse, Fantastic Fest, and Drafthouse founder/C.E.O. Tim League, regarding the firing and rehiring of a Drafthouse employee who had been accused of sexual assault. While we felt it was important to address this controversy and discuss our feelings, we did want to avoid granular exploration of the details. As a matter of fact, several allegations against former Drafthouse associate and AIN'T IT COOL NEWS founder have surfaced even after we first put this episode "on Memorex." The fact of the matter is, beyond the conversation that's being had online and in the media, the most important part of that conversation was happening in Austin, Texas this week, during Fantastic Fest. As we had made the decision to not attend (long before the controversy), this is a conversation that is still being had and is one that we aren't yet privy to. In that vein if the specifics of the controversy interest you, we'd like to direct your attention to the WOMEN IN CASKETS podcast. Friends of the NIGHTHAWKS, Jen and Dawn are the eponymous WOMEN IN CASKETS and they bring their perspective to genre film, episode after episode. This week the WOMEN IN CASKETS crew are front and center at Fantastic Fest, and they're offering a great perspective from the ground level of both the festival and the controversy. However let us make one thing perfectly clear: We do not condone sexual assault under any circumstances, full stop. Meanwhile, the real thrust of this episode is to give due attention to one of the shining lights of Fantastic Fest in years past. Mattie Do is not only remarkable for being the only female genre filmmaker in Laos, nor is she simply the only female filmmaker in Laos, period. Mattie is an effervescent tour de force of personality, who's artistry and passion have treated her well as a filmmaker. She is a major keystone in the building of a film scene in Laos, and has recently begun on the path to a possible Oscar nomination. Variety recently said that Do was regarded as "one of Asia’s hottest new film-making talents." Do's latest film DEAREST SISTER, our topic tonight, played Fantastic Fest 2016. Do's other directed film, CHANTHALY also played Fantastic Fest, as did RIVER- a Laos-set thriller on which Do served as a producer. Following a release on the streaming service SHUDDER in early 2017, DEAREST SISTER was submitted by the country of Laos for consideration in the "Best Foreign Language Film" category at the Academy Awards. This is the first Lao submission in the country's history. Full disclosure, Mattie is a friend of the podcast, and when we heard the news that she was being submitted for an Oscar nomination, we knew we'd be getting into an episode on DEAREST SISTER, soon enough. While the road to nomination is long and full of pitfalls, and the road to a win even longer, we certainly wish Mattie the best of luck in the coming months. We're very excited to see this film get some recognition
