Our discussion about the animated film Happy Feet leads to some interesting questions, like; Does Mumble kill God, or is he a Christ figure? Is he being punished for the sins of his father? Can a penguin experience ego death? Why do penguins have so many accents? Are aliens gods? Are penguins aliens? Can a movie about a dancing penguin cause you to question your role as an evil force on earth? Is this a good movie? Spoiler alert: Both. Probably. Yes. Robin Williams. Maybe. Sometimes. Oh yeah. Not really. I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa Happy Feet is a 2006 animated jukebox musical comedy film directed and produced by George Miller and written by Miller, John Collee, Judy Morris and Warren Coleman. It stars the voices of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Brittany Murphy, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Hugo Weaving, Anthony LaPaglia, Magda Szubanski and Steve Irwin. Set in the cold land of Antarctica, the film follows Mumble (Wood), an emperor penguin who is able to tap dance brilliantly despite lacking the ability to sing a heartsong to attract a soulmate. After being continuously ridiculed and rejected by peers and his own father (Jackman), Mumble departs on a journey to learn what is causing the local fish population to decline — and to find himself along the way…
Val Kilmer was one of the most eclectic and enthralling actors of his generation and one of the movies that heavily showcased this is this week's movie, “The Salton Sea.” Kilmer showed he could be wacky, like in “Top Secret!” and “Real Genius” or deadly serious like in “Spartan” and “The Doors.” In “The Salton Sea” he sort of combines those two and it makes for an entertaining and captivating performance. If you want a movie that leads you down one path, en route to setting an expectation, just to subvert it, and does it multiple times, “The Salton Sea” just might be for you. Kilmer plays Danny Parker, a trumpet player, who has a faithful marriage to a beautiful wife until that all comes to an end. Afterwards, his life becomes a drug-filled downward spiral as he joins the perpetual night party of the tweaker to cope, or is that why he's really doing it? We don't know. He's also a confidential informant for a couple of L.A. detectives who want him to set up a maniacally, murderous drug dealer named Pooh Bear. This is a drug dealer known for killing people suddenly just because he doesn't like the tone of their voice. Also, Danny is told that he's been marked for death for something he didn't do, so things went from beautiful and romantic to pitiful and manic really quick. Is Danny Parker for real, or is he someone else? Will he survive the vortex of violence he finds himself in? Is it worth finding out in this lesser known Val Kilmer movie? Check out my spoiler-free review on this episode to find out! “The Salton Sea” also stars Vincent D'Onofrio, Adam Goldberg, Luiz Guzman, Doug Hutchison, Anthony LaPaglia, Glenn Plummer, Peter Sarsgaard, Deborah Kara Unger, Chandra West, BD Wong, R. Lee Ermey, Shalom Harlow, Sherry Knight, Meat Loaf, Azura Skye, Josh Todd and Danny Trejo. We're back from ITHACON, but we mustn't dwell, no, not today! We can't! Not on Rex Manning Day! We're rewinding to 1995 at the height of the record store boom. Directed by Allan Moyle and written by Carol Heikkinen, with an ensemble cast including Anthony LaPaglia, Maxwell Caulfield, Debi Mazar, Rory Cochrane, Johnny Whitworth, Robin Tunney, Renée Zellweger, and Liv Tyler, this comedy follows a group of record store employees through a wild twenty-four hours on that particular April 8th. Unfortunately, the film bombed spectacularly at the box office and was panned by critics at the time of release, but its eclectic soundtrack and stacked cast of future stars have made it into something of a cult favorite in the intervening years. But is this flick really The Breakfast Club for Elder Millennials, or does Empire Records belong in the bargain bin? Sweet and Lowdown opened on December 3rd in just 3 theaters and taking in an impressive 31,562 dollar per screen average Written and directed by Woody Allen, it stars Sean Penn as fictional jazz guitar legend Emmet Ray alongside Samantha Morton and Uma Thurman, Brad Garrett, John Waters, Anthony LaPaglia, and Brian Markinson, among others. Sweet and Lowdown was a welcome end to what many saw as a mid-90s slump for Allen, who had released a string of movies who that had been received with mixed or sometimes scathing reviews, like 1995's Mighty Aphrodite, 1996's Everyone Says I Love You, 1997's Deconstructing Harry, and 1998's Celebrity. It's also difficult to not see in light of revelations of Allen's darker behaviors throughout his career, to say nothing of Penn. But it can also sweet and charming, and its jazz-age nostalgia is as hard to resist as Morton's acclaimed, Oscar-nominated silent performance. Joining John and Julia to talk through Sweet and Lowdown's ups and downs is actor, writer, and director Liz Whitmere, who has some thoughts on toxic behavior in the entertainment industry. Send us a textDo you remember the Christmas movie Mixed Nuts from 1994? We remember almost nothing about this movie, and with a stacked cast like this—Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Anthony LaPaglia, Juliette Lewis, Liev Schreiber, Rita Wilson, and Adam Sandler, to name just a few—we are worried about why we haven't seen it since the 90s. We hope it was ahead of its time and is a lost Holiday Gem but we wouldn't bet our Christmas Stocking on it. So join us as we go back to the 90s for a Christmas Surprise or the Ghost of Christmas Future. You know, the one where life sucks, everybody is miserable and the main character dies. Much like our Christmas Spirit if this movie sucks.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

Is the new Richard Linklater film just Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors starring actors in better shape, or is it something far more? Jett and Gareth disagree on a fundamental level about this light, no dark, comedy. One of this country's pre-eminent directors, Neil Armfield has a list of credits which is vast, spanning original works and revived classics, directing shows across the world, including on the West End and on Broadway. He's also of course no stranger to opera, having directed several productions for Opera Australia, as well as for some of the world's other great opera houses including Covent Garden and the English National Opera. A founder and former artistic director of Belvoir Street, he has been a key figure in the shape of Australian theatre for nearly five decades. His current project is directing a revival of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, a production which ran in Melbourne last year when Limelight magazine called it “outstanding" and The Guardian said Tony award winner “Anthony LaPaglia leads an electric, devastating tragedy”. Neil speaks about why this piece of mid-20th Century American theatre is so iconic and relevant in today's world. We hear about his life in the theatre, which began with directing his school play in his final year of high school, to working with some of the greats in both Australia and internationally in the subsequent decades. Death of a Salesman plays at Sydney's Theatre Royal from 17 May. Watershed, which Neil directed as part of the Adelaide Festival in 2022, will be presented by Opera Australia in the Joan Sutherland Theatre of the Sydney Opera House from 14-16 June. Hamlet, which Neil directed for Glyndebourne in 2017 and has since been performed by many opera houses around the world including The Met in New York, will be presented by Opera Australia in the Joan Sutherland Theatre of the Sydney Opera House from 20 July - 5 August.

Writer Maggie Serota joins to discuss the 1993 comedy 'So I Married An Axe Murderer', a movie that takes inspiration from classic screwball comedies, Hitchcock thrillers, and SNL-style sketch comedy in equal measure. We discuss the rise of the film's star, Mike Myers, a gifted comedic performer who dedicated much of his 90s output to an evolving pantheon characters, often involving elaborate makeup and outlandish vocal affectations. Then, we talk about the film's stunning bullpen of comedy veterans, including Alan Arkin, and the late Phil Hartman and Charles Grodin - all contributing hilarious riffs on their signature characters. Finally, we talk about Myers's career today by way of his most recent work, the dire Netflix series 'The Pentaverate' and why audiences might welcome a career pivot in the vein of other SNL alum Adam Sandler or Bill Hader.Follow Maggie on Twitter.Read & Subscribe to Maggie's Substack. We are so fortunate to have another Showrunner on the podcast. This time, Hank Steinberg. In 1997, Steinberg successfully sold the cable network HBO on 61*, a biographical drama about the legendary home-run race between Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle of the 1961 Yankees. The following year, Billy Crystal came aboard as a producer on the project and subsequently directed the film, starring Thomas Jane and Barry Pepper. 61* garnered 12 Emmy nominations, including Best Motion Picture for Television and Best Writing. Steinberg was also nominated for a WGA Award for the film. Steinberg then created the CBS show Without a Trace, which aired from September 26, 2002, to May 19, 2009. Without a Trace follows the cases of a Missing Persons Unit of the FBI in New York City. On Couch Potato Theater we celebrate our favorite movies! On this episode your Couch Potato Theater hosts discuss Empire Records (1995) & celebrate Rex Manning Day (April 8th)! Empire Records is a 1995 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed by Allan Moyle, starring Anthony LaPaglia, Maxwell Caulfield, Debi Mazar, Rory Cochrane, Johnny Whitworth, Robin Tunney, Renée Zellweger, and Liv Tyler. The film follows a group of record store employees over the course of one exceptional day. The employees try to stop the store from being sold to a large chain, and learn about each other along the way. It went on to become a cult hit, and several of its stars launched successful careers. Celebrated annually on April 8, Rex Manning Day commemorates the day that washed-up 1980s pop idol Rex Manning (played by Maxwell Caulfield) visited the fictional Empire Records. An Internet meme among the film's fans celebrates "Rex Manning Day" on April 8, the date Rex appears at Empire Records in the film. #RexManningDay is a recurring trending hashtag on Twitter. GIFs commemorating the event show Embry's character bounding down the stairs from the store's loft, declaring "Not on Rex Manning Day!!" Larsen Thompson (The Midnight Club, Horrorscope) was an amazing fricken guest this week. She shared her early entry into acting after having to walk away from her passion of dancing for health concerns. Larsen opens up on the idea of her perfectionism and how she's learned to turn that off while acting, prioritizing performance over her own appearance and ego. We also talk about working with Mike Flanagan on The Midnight Club, her first role under Anthony LaPaglia, and how a retweet from Beyoncé helped catapult her career. The Equalizer Season 3 Episode 13: The Child Broker Aired on CBS: January 20, 1988 Directed by: Mark Sobel Written by : Mick Curran Featuring: Sam Rockwell, Frank Whaley, Jerry O'Connell, Anthony LaPaglia, Max Casella, Christopher Collet, Thomas G. Waites, Lycia Naff If absolutely nothing else, just check out that cast list. There's a new gang leader on the dire streets of NYC and he's turning on impressionable teens to the rough life: robbing pawn shops, running around, and basking in their misdeeds in their abandoned underground amusement park. You just don't want to get messed up with them, though if you do, you're pretty much guaranteed steady work in the entertainment business for at least forty years. The crazy plot itself would be more at home in a comic book, but this episode is definitely worth it for to see their recognizable faces in what seems like an extended headshot session for their "tough guy" shot. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com

Snap those fingers and blow out that candle, man, as we immerse ourselves in Mike Myers's personal mythology in Tommy Schlamme's So I Married an Axe Murderer. Is this movie basically a Rosetta Stone for all of Myers's future films? How does a beat poet afford an incredible apartment in San Francisco—unless he's actually the one who is a black widow killer? Are the comedy cameos in this, from Charles Brolin to Steven Wright, the best of all time? Or do the incessant “bits” that it spawned ruin the fun? The only thing we can say is: Let's get pissed!

Share a special brownie with your favorite 90s boyfriend Ethan Embry because it's time for us to celebrate Rex Manning Day, aka Allan Moyle's Empire Records. Did you know there was an alternate universe edit of this movie that actually explains everyone's motivations? Why were the 90s so lily white? What happened to the dog from the movie poster? And can we ever look at blue cheese the same way again? This is the episode where all agree Renée Zellweger is a better friend—and actor—than Liv Tyler.Read Randall's full episode notes at yourenofun.com.And follow us on Instagram and Twitter.
