Hello and welcome to the Progress Theory where we discuss scientific principles for optimising human performance. In this episode, we're joined by plyometric expert Matt McInnis-Watson. Now I don't know if you've noticed, but you quite often hear of a new world record being broken in a number of different sports, say, weightlifting or quite often in running. I'm always hearing of a new world record in, say, 5k, 10k, etcetera, etcetera. But you rarely hear of a world record being broken in a jump event such as the long jump or triple jump or high jump. I mean, Jonathan Edwards' world record in the triple jump has been going since 1995. So what needs to happen in jump training and the culture within jump training to see an improvement in jump sports? That's why I contacted Matt. And if you have any interest in improving jump performance, this episode is for you. In this episode, we discuss:1:02 - Introduction3:35 - The importance of Plyometrics in today's society and longevity8:35 - Issues with plyometric research13:44 - People get the plyometric definition wrong - still16:12 - different types of plyometrics 20:27 - Why are jump world records rare?25:57 - Strength specificity30:25 - What needs to change?35:10 - Which jump sports will see the biggest changes over the next few years?39:08 - Power athlete vs speed athlete44:13 - The importance of supramaximal50:37 - Plyometric recommendationsTakeaways

Join Jonathan Gagne and Brendan Russ on Reliability Radio as they sit down with passionate industry experts Dave Reiber from Reliabilityweb and Rich McInnes from Net Results. This episode dives deep into the urgent issue of the skilled trades gap – a "big hole that's getting bigger." Dave and Rich reveal the motivation behind their upcoming book, designed to be a conversation for everyone in the trades, from aspiring apprentices to seasoned leaders and organizational decision-makers. Hear fascinating historical insights on the origins of trades and guilds, and how artisans have shaped our world for millennia. Beyond the challenges, the discussion celebrates the pride, craftsmanship, and artistry of tradespeople, highlighting the often-overlooked value and legacy they create. Dave shares his personal journey from an electrician at General Motors to a global business manager, emphasizing the vast opportunities a trade career can unlock. Rich challenges the notion that AI will diminish the need for skilled hands, making a compelling case for the enduring importance of those who "bend pipe or solder a joint." They explore critical questions: How do we foster aspirational goals in the trades? What does "master of the master" truly mean? And how can we bridge the perception gap between college degrees and vocational skills, showing the incredible ROI of a trade career? This conversation is a powerful call to action, reminding us that tradespeople are the unsung heroes building our future, and they need our recognition and support.

Chapters 00:00 Moving to Tennessee: A New Chapter 05:12 Understanding the Tier System for Plyometrics 10:06 The Importance of Tendon Health in Sports 14:55 Exploring Structural Changes in Muscle and Tendon 19:58 Volume vs. Intensity: The Key to Structural Development 24:59 The Role of Joint Stiffness in Athletic Performance 30:02 The Stretch-Shorten Cycle and Its Implications 35:16 Understanding Tendon Development 39:01 The Neuromuscular Connection 44:07 Stiffness vs. Compliance in Tendons 48:01 The Importance of Deep Tier Movements 56:56 Tendon Development in Youth 01:04:00 Upcoming Projects and Future Plans Takeaways Matt recently moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, and is working with the NFL Combine Group. The tier system for plyometrics is based on a simple classification of movement intensity. Tendon health is crucial for athletes, especially in track and field. Volume is essential for structural development in muscles and tendons. Joint stiffness plays a significant role in athletic performance. The light tier of plyometrics is more muscular-based and less effective for structural changes. High volumes of plyometric training can lead to significant improvements in performance. Athletes in team sports often hide injuries better than those in track and field. The stretch-shortening cycle is vital for understanding tendon function during athletic movements. Fatigue in muscles can limit the effectiveness of tendon utilization during performance. Max effort jumps primarily enhance neuromuscular output. Tendon development requires specific training tiers. Stiffness and compliance are crucial for tendon health. Deep tier movements may improve tendon compliance. Youth training should consider peak height velocity. Monitoring volume and intensity is essential for young athletes. Tendons behave differently in youth compared to adults. Injury prevention strategies must include structural training. The relationship between joint angles and tendon strain is complex. Upcoming courses will focus on practical training methods. McInnes and Goldstein both started in zines. The underground DIY magazine culture of the 80s and 90s. Zines were homemade photocopied pamphlets about anything and everything. As long as you had paper, glue, staples, maybe a few shitty drawings, and you could sneak access to a photocopier, you could publish your own zine.Nobody went viral, nobody made money, no one was an influencer, but thousands of people devoted heart and soul to making their own zines. And when they did, well, who even cared? Who even noticed when some teenager shouted into the void? Broken Pencil noticed. Broken Pencil cared. For 30 years Broken Pencil was the magazine about zines and BP reviewed over 10,000 zines. And then last year Broken Pencil founder and publisher Hal Niedzviecki, shuttered BP. Proud Boys - Who are they? What do they want?Mar 21, 2023Ed Opperman interviews 'former Proud Boy' about the group, it's ethos and exactly why they are such a threat to the way of life in America. From wikipediaThe Proud Boys is an exclusively male North American far-right neo-fascist organization that promotes and engages in political violence in the United States. It has been called a street gang and was designated as a terrorist group in Canada and New Zealand. The Proud Boys are known for their opposition to left-wing and progressive groups and their support for former U.S. President Donald Trump. The group originated in the far-right Taki's Magazine in 2016 under the leadership of Vice Media co-founder and former commentator Gavin McInnes, taking its name from the song "Proud of Your Boy" from the 2011 Disney musical Aladdin.Although the Proud Boys initially emerged as part of the alt-right, McInnes distanced himself from this movement in early 2017, saying the Proud Boys were alt-lite while the alt-right's focus was on race. Donald Trump's comment, "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by," during the October 2020 presidential debates are credited with greatly increasing interest and recruitment. Enrique Tarrio, an Afro-Cuban Cuban-American, has been the chairman of the Proud Boys since late 2018. According to a former federal prosecutor and the transcripts of a 2014 federal court proceeding, Tarrio had previously served as an informant to both federal and local law enforcement.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Join Revero waitlist: https://revero.com/join Matt Watson is a dynamic thinker with a keen interest in biomechanics and human movement. His approach centers on the idea that the human body's reflexive capacities, such as the sudden jolt experienced when stepping on an unexpected stair, highlight our innate ability to anticipate. Matt champions the concept that maintaining high-intensity, simplistic movements can significantly benefit our physical resilience. He argues that the most effective exercises are those that are straightforward yet demanding, like barefoot activities on concrete, which stimulate potent physiological responses. Matt emphasizes the importance of plyometric and jumping exercises in preserving our anticipatory abilities, which he considers humanity's greatest superpower. Driven by a belief in the power of simplicity in maintaining intensity, Matt's insights offer a fresh perspective on optimizing physical training and endurance.
