The latest report from the Pew Research Center not only helps us understand where our teens ages thirteen to seventeen are spending time online, but should light a fire under us to exercise diligence and regularity about helping our teens practice what we call digital discipleship. It's not surprising that YouTube is hands down the most used online platforms for kids, with nine out of ten saying they use the site. Seventy three percent of our thirteen to seventeen year olds say they visit YouTube daily. Six in ten say they visit the TikTok video site daily. With our kids consuming so much video content on a daily basis, we need to teach them to use wisdom and discernment regarding what they see, along with limiting the amount of time they spend scrolling through videos. Ask them about what they are seeing. Ask them to share what they see with you. And train them to embrace content that furthers their faith, while avoiding that which is not good, true, and honorable.

I recently read through a report on teens and screens from the Center for Scholars and Storytellers at the University of California. I want you to hear these important words from the reports introduction: βAn alarming proportion of today's adolescents are facing unprecedented mental health challenges, and they are inundated with storytelling media that exerts a powerful influence. Media is more present than ever before, with many estimates indicating that youth spend up to nine hours on screens outside of school. Screens and the internet touch every aspect of a young person's life β school, communication with friends, and leisure activities. Adolescents learn from these images and messages; thus, storytellers can and should be mindful of the social-emotional influence they have on the next generation.β Parents, are you listening? We have a responsibility to not only set limits, but to help our kids to bring God glory by thinking critically and Christianly about all the media they consume.
I remember being in Sunday School as a child and singing a catchy little song about wisdom, discernment, and influences that has stuck with me until this day. Perhaps you remember the same song, which issued warnings like be careful little eyes what you see, and be careful little ears what you hear. That song oftentimes comes to mind when I think about the influence that mass media and social media has on us and our kids. What we watch and what we listen to communicates beliefs about life that shape and even misshape our worldviews. And for our impressionable kids, the power to shape and misshape is especially strong. Parents, consider these true words from Robert McTeigue: Mass consumer culture is more than a vendor. The range of its dynamics is greater than simply facilitating the transfer of wealth from consumer to merchant. Mass culture is a principal venue for propaganda, seduction, illusion, and addiction.β Parents, teach your kids to think Christianly about media.
Back when I was a teenager, there was a growing movement in the church to steer kids away from popular music that referenced things like drugs, sex, and violence. Many parents and youth workers were criticized for monitoring what their kids were listening to, as some believed that music lyrics were benign in influence. But research began to show that their concerns were justified, as what we listen to does influence our beliefs and behaviors. A new study measuring the associations between listening to sexual music lyrics and the influence on adolescent behavior has found that boys are more likely to participate in sexting in the future when exposed to sexual music lyrics. Parents, we need to be gatekeepers for the minds and hearts of our kids. Psalm one-hundred-one three says, βI will set no wicked thing before my eyes.β We need to teach our kids to have that same resolve. Our entertainment time should be, like all other times, about pursuing that which is good, true, right, and honorable.
With a dusting of the importance of long term mentorship
it's levels to it

With the Super Bowl happening this week there's excitement building not only about the game, but about all the new commercials that will air. This year's cost to marketers? Seven million dollars for a thirty-second spot. As always, we suggest that you take the opportunity to make your Super Bowl watching experience a teachable moment for your kids. Use it as an opportunity to teach them how to apply their faith to the glut of marketing messages they face each day. We suggest that you filter every ad through these seven questions. One β What product is this ad selling? Two- What besides the product does this ad sell in term of lifestyles and worldviews. Three β What's the hook and the bait? Four -What does the ad promise the product will do for you? Five, does the ad tell the truth? Six, Does the ad tell a lie? And seven β how does this ad and its messages agree or disagree with God's Word and what does that mean for me? Parents, teach your kids to exercise biblical discernment.Β
If you've got kids in the house, you know that there are certain things that you put behind a closed door and out of reach. We take precautions by putting cleaners, solvents, and other poisonous chemicals in places where our curious young children can't get to them. We put child-proof locks on cabinets so that our kids can't get to things that will do them physical harm. We all know that bodily poison typically enters through the mouth. As Christian parents, we must also be aware that spiritual poison exists, and it typically enters into one's life through the ears and the eyes. In today's world, there's a twenty-four seven river of spiritual poison that flows freely through television, music, social media, and the online world. This is why we must be just as diligent to set up borders and boundaries that protect our kids from spiritual poison, as we are with bodily poison. In Psalm one hundred and one, David states a resolve we must instill in our kids: I will put no unclean thing before my eyes.
Here at CPYU, we are continually reminding you that youth culture is both a map and a mirror. As a mirror, cultural artifacts reveal the current beliefs that are shaping the behaviors of our children and teens. When you watch and listen to the music, movies, and everything else, you'll gain a clearer sense of our culture's ideological bent. As a map, what our kids interact with in today's youth culture shapes their beliefs and behaviors about how to live in the world. This is why it's important for you to know that this fall, Marvel will be introducing it's first gay Spiderman as the latest variant in the Spiderman universe. Parents, as those called to nurture our children and teens into a lifetime of living out God's will and way for his grand and glorious gift of sex and gender, we need to talk with our kids about how the cultural message on sex and gender does or does not mesh with what we are told in Scripture. These are conversations we must be having, as God will use them to shape our kids for life.

Bias in the media is everywhere in the cultureβeven in Christian publications. More often than not, misleading headlines betray the facts in order to manipulate public opinion. This is especially true with our kids. How do we fight back? We teach our kids how to spot a counterfeit so that they will know how to find truth. There's little chance that we are able to discern biblical truth from the spirit of the times until our roots go deep through washing and delighting ourselves each and every day in the Word of God. Sadly, many of those called to nurture children and teens in the faith today are misleading the young by never faithfully teaching the truths of God's Word. And without a knowledge of the truth, the enemies lies are more easily believed. Even what seems like an innocent Christian children's book can put kids on a fast road away from the true Christian faith. That's why I'm chatting today with Elizabeth Urbanowicz about how to train our kids in biblical discernment, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.Β Β
There's absolutely no way we can ignore it. The Netflix nine part series Squid Game is a big hit across cultures and generations. It's especially popular among our kids. Since pop culture artifacts like Squid Game serve as a worldview forming and reflecting map for our kids , we need to pay attention. And that's what we're doing today as we chat with our friends Clark Fobes and Kevin Yi about Squid Game, it's message, its meaning, and how to respond, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.

The phrase βmedia discernmentβ is bandied about in Christian and parenting circles, but what does it really mean? You'll learn how to apply biblical truth to your family's entertainment choices.
When youβre with your kids and engaging media together, why not use the things you see and hear as an opportunity to offer biblical correctives to the messages the media gets wrong? Here are three categories of messages to look for and answer with biblical truth. First, there are theΒ ideologies. This is the stuff of worldview formation. In todayβs world the message is one that convincingly tells us that our highest and most noble goal in life is to be true to yourself. Second, there are the messages aboutΒ identity. We now choose to be self-defined rather than Creator-defined. Today, we develop our identities based on what we choose rather than on the givenness of our God-made humanity. We believe we can find rest in who we choose to be rather than in who we are as image-bearers in Christ. Third, there is the pressure to fabricate, curate, and promote ourΒ imageΒ that is seen by the world. This pressure wrongly convinces kids that βI am what I look like. . . and what people think of me.β
As technology has continued to fill our time more and more, there has been an upsurge in research which examines the effects of screen time on our children and teens. We should be rightly concerned and diligent in our efforts to know if what we allow our kids to do both in terms of time and content, contributes to their human flourishing, or undermines their human flourishing. Recent research from Canada indicates that preschoolers who engage with screens for two or more hours a day are five times more likely to exhibit major behavioral problems and seven times more likely to show signs of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.Β In fact, screen time was a greater risk factor for these issues than sleep, parenting stress, and socioeconomic status. Researchers also found that engaging in physical activity and getting enough sleep helped to buffer the effects of too much screen time. Parents, you are called by God to steward the health and development of your children. Use wisdom!
Today's technology is a useful, but even adults need discernment about guarding our spiritual/emotional/physical well being.
Welcome to episode 36 where I am talking to PR maven, business woman extraodinare Ronke Lawal, founder of Ariatu PR. Β I thought we were going to talk about PR, my intention was to talk to Ronke about the juxtaposition of having a multi identity and professionalism in a world where White, middle class and beyond are the default for all things professional due to systematic racism, followed by a conversation on the mindset necessary to be ready of PR. However the multi identity piece was huge. We didnβt get to all the places but we got deep, soulful and honest. It was a really enriching conversation. Β Full show notes here.
