Episode 154: The Principles of Homeopathy Explained with Dr. Devang Shah

Homeopathy247 Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 18, 2025 33:05

In this episode of the Homeopathy 247 podcast, host Mary Greensmith welcomes Dr. Devang Shah, a homeopath based in Mumbai, India. Dr. Shah shares his insights into homeopathy training in India, his approach to musculoskeletal conditions, and how homeopathy works holistically to support healing. Homeopathy Education in India Dr. Shah explains that homeopaths in India undergo 4.5 years of formal medical study, followed by a one-year internship—similar to mainstream medical doctors. The main difference is that instead of pharmacology, homeopaths study materia medica, which covers homeopathic remedies. Public Awareness of Homeopathy Homeopathy is well-known in many parts of India, particularly in cities like Calcutta where people often use remedies like Arnica and Belladonna at home. In more rural areas, awareness is growing. The more skilled homeopaths graduate, the more homeopathy spreads. Treating Musculoskeletal Conditions Dr. Shah began treating chronic pain conditions after being invited to consult at a friend's orthopedic hospital. There, he treated conditions like osteoarthritis and back pain—especially where conventional medicine offered little relief. The Link Between Stress and Pain Stress often worsens back pain, whether emotional (grief, anxiety) or physical. Dr. Shah explains that homeopathy addresses both physical and emotional causes of pain, offering more complete and lasting relief than simply masking symptoms with painkillers. Understanding the Vital Force In homeopathy, the “vital force” is the body's innate healing power. When this force is weakened, symptoms appear. Remedies stimulate the vital force to restore balance and activate healing from within. How Remedies Are Selected Homeopaths follow the “law of similars”—choosing remedies that produce symptoms similar to the patient's condition. For example, Apis (made from the honeybee) is used for conditions that mimic a bee sting: swelling, redness, and burning pain relieved by cold. Proving Remedies and Materia Medica Homeopathic remedies are “proved” on healthy individuals who record physical, emotional, and mental changes. This data forms the basis of materia medica—the homeopath's guide to choosing remedies. These records have been collected for over 200 years. Avoiding Remedy Overuse Unlike conventional medicine, homeopathic remedies are not meant to be taken continuously. Once symptoms improve, the remedy should be paused. Overuse may lead to “proving” symptoms—new symptoms created by the remedy itself. Proper timing and follow-up are key. Chronic Illness and Long-Term Benefits Even long-standing conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can improve significantly. Dr. Shah shares a case where a patient avoided costly injections and painkillers thanks to homeopathy. While early treatment brings the best outcomes, even later stages can benefit. Homeopathy and Conventional Medicine Homeopathy can be safely used alongside conventional treatments. Dr. Shah notes that patients on medications like thyroid pills often reduce or even stop them under supervision as homeopathy restores balance and health. This episode offers a deep and clear explanation of how homeopathy works—especially in treating musculoskeletal issues. Dr. Devang Shah highlights the importance of holistic understanding, symptom matching, and the body's own ability to heal. On this week's show: LawNext takes you to the movies. Well, to a specific movie, anyway – a documentary being made to raise public awareness and understanding of the access to justice crisis in this country.  Today's guests are the film's director, documentary filmmaker Laura Hand, who previously directed The Tent Mender, about homelessness on Skid Row in Los Angeles, and Maya Markovich, a legal innovation leader – and two-time previous guest on this show (here and here) – who is serving as a producer and advisor to the documentary. You may know Markovich as executive director of the Justice Technology Association and for her recent appointment as vice president of the American Arbitration Association's thought leadership and research arm.  The documentary, called Justice: Just A Promise?, has been given unprecedented access to film inside the courthouses of the Los Angeles County court system – the largest court system in the world and one where litigants unable to get a lawyer present enormous challenges to the civil justice system.  As this episode airs, the filmmakers have just launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to raise the money they need to complete and distribute the film. During today's conversation, you'll hear about that campaign, including Hand's surprising explanation of why she went that route to raise funds.  You will also learn all about the making of the film and how the filmmakers aim to raise awareness about a nationwide crisis that far too few are even aware of, let alone understand.  Check out their fundraising page here.    Thank You To Our Sponsors This episode of LawNext is generously made possible by our sponsors. In this episode of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast, host Andrew Lewin discusses the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, emphasizing the significant role climate change plays in their occurrence and intensity. Lewin highlights that the wildfires are exacerbated by a phenomenon known as "hydroclimate whiplash," where California experiences extreme fluctuations between wet and dry conditions. In 2023, the state saw record precipitation and lush vegetation growth, but by 2024, drought conditions led to that vegetation drying out, creating ample fuel for wildfires. The situation was further intensified by the Santa Ana winds, which reached speeds of up to 90 miles per hour, allowing fires to spread rapidly and uncontrollably. The episode underscores that these abrupt climate variations, intensified by global climate change, contribute to the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires. Lewin stresses that ignoring the science behind climate change and the resulting environmental conditions will only lead to more disasters, as seen in both California and Hawaii. He calls for urgent action and the election of decision-makers who acknowledge and are willing to address climate change effectively. Overall, the episode serves as a somber reminder of the real and devastating impacts of climate change on communities, urging listeners to recognize the urgency of the situation and take action. Climate change misinformation has been a persistent issue for decades, fueled by campaigns funded by the fossil fuel industry. In this episode of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast, host Andrew Lewin discusses the ongoing struggle to raise awareness about climate change and the detrimental effects of misinformation on public perception and policy. He highlights a recent article from The Cool Down that reveals how organizations are financially supported to spread false narratives and apathy regarding climate change. Andrew reflects on historical examples, such as the successful efforts to address the ozone layer and acid rain, contrasting them with the current challenges posed by climate change denial and misinformation. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing the role of influential figures and organizations, like the Koch brothers, in perpetuating these misleading narratives. As the episode unfolds, Andrew calls for action against climate change misinformation and encourages listeners to be informed voters, especially in light of upcoming elections. He stresses the need for transparency in political funding and urges individuals to support candidates who prioritize environmental issues over corporate interests. Join Andrew as he navigates the complexities of climate change communication and advocates for a more informed and proactive approach to protecting our planet. Understanding Disordered Eating
141. The Problem With Our Culture and How To Change It with Michael Levine, Ph.D., FAED

Understanding Disordered Eating

How do we challenge cultural norms when society has a strong perception of how things “should” be? Cultural and environmental factors undeniably influence our understanding and experience of our relationship with food and our bodies. But, let's reconsider them. This is an opportunity to examine how our personal, professional, and political actions can drive meaningful change. This exploration blends personal experiences with broader societal observations, encouraging us to reflect on how culture shapes our views on body image. The insights from this conversation are both enlightening and empowering, prompting us to think about how we, as individuals and as a society, can combat pervasive negativity and work towards a future of body positivity, equality, and genuine connection. In this episode, I'm joined by Michael Levine. Together, we explore life skills that go far beyond just getting by. These skills challenge the norms that society loves to impose—norms that make us question our worth based on how we look or how we measure up to others. Spoiler alert: these norms are garbage, and we're here to dissect them. Michael P. Levine, Ph.D., is an Emeritus Professor of Psychology at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he taught from 1979 through 2012. In the field of eating disorders, his commitment to research, writing, and advocacy focuses on the intersection between sociocultural risk factors, prevention, and community psychology. He has authored three books and three prevention curriculum guides, and he has co-edited three books on prevention. In 2015, as co-editor with his long-time collaborator and colleague Dr. Linda Smolak, he published a two-volume Handbook of Eating Disorders (Wiley & Sons Publishing). In 2021 he and Dr. Smolak published a new, extensively revised, and expanded edition of their 2006 book The Prevention of Eating Problems and Eating Disorders (Routledge/Taylor & Francis). In addition, Dr. Levine has authored or co-authored approximately 115 articles, book chapters, and book reviews, and he has presented his work throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, England, Spain, Austria, and Australia. Dr. Levine is a Fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED), which has awarded him their Meehan-Hartley Award for Leadership in Public Awareness and Advocacy (2006), and their Research-Practice Partnership Award (2008).  Note: We're celebrating three amazing years of the Understanding Disordered Eating podcast! Just as a reminder, we're taking a two-week break at the end of August. We'll be back with fresh content after Labor Day weekend, on September 10th. In the meantime, catch up on our older episodes—they're still gems! Tweetable Quotes "These are life skills which are going to work on the personal level, the professional level, and the political level." - Michael Levine "A sense of hope that the same kinds of massive transformations that have taken place in our culture can take place, and in fact are starting to take place, when it comes to the issues of body image, of equity, of control." - Michael Levine "I really do see a world also where the exploitation of bodies, particularly female bodies, but bodies is not a multi-trillion-dollar industry." - Michael Levine "It's going to require citizens and professionals from multiple disciplines, thinking about really complex matters. And I fall back to the fact that I believe we can do this." - Michael Levine Resources Michael Levine's Book: Prevention of Eating Disorders Michael Levine's Book: Paradigm clash in the field of eating disorders   Grab my Journal Prompts Here!
