Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
The red flowered plant that shows up everywhere at this time of year–I saw a forest of them in Wegman's this morning– is called in Mexico the cuetlaxochitl, or the noche buena; but Americans know it by as the namesake of man who introduced it to the United States: poinsettia. Yet Joel Roberts Poinsett was a more interesting organism than that plant given his name. He was a South Carolinian who spent years away from the state, and was a committed nationalist and anti-nullifier; a world traveller when few Americans were; a slaveowner who other slaveowners regarded as potentially anti-slavery; an international investor who also labored for South Carolina local improvements; a diplomat who spent years if not decades trying to find a way to be a soldier. And that's leaving a few facets of his identity out. As my guest Lindsay Schackenbach Regele sums him up, “He was not the same, anywhere.”Lindsay Schakenbach Regele is with me to discuss Joel Poinsett, his era, and what he reveals about it. She was previously on the podcast in a conversation that dropped on April 3, 2019, which focused on her book Manufacturing Advantage: War, the State, and the Origins of American Industry, 1776–1848 (Hopkins, 2019). A recent proposal by Lina Khan, co-chair of Zohran Mamdani's mayoral transition team, to cap the price of beer at stadiums in New York City sparked a debate on X last month. At the center of that debate was Matthew Yglesias, editor and author the Slow Boring newsletter, who argued that the modern antitrust movement has become "slipshod" and is ignoring basic economic trade-offs in favor of political wins.In this episode, Yglesias joins Luigi and Bethany to discuss his views on the theoretical and practical limitations of the "Neo-Brandeisian" approach to antitrust. He contends that proposals like price caps for complementary goods like stadium concessions reveals a lack of economic rigor, arguing that such measures often result in higher ticket prices rather than consumer savings . He suggests that the movement increasingly attempts to use antitrust law as a universal tool for societal grievances.Bethany and Luigi debate Yglesias on the limits of this modern anti-monopoly movement, arguing that he sounds like a "Chicago economist circa 1970" who assumes markets are always efficient and rational. From the lobbying might of the banking industry to the extractive fees of Amazon, Luigi argues that economic concentration inevitably morphs into political power which standard price theory often ignores. He posits that even if consolidated industries remain price-efficient, their size allows for the capture of the regulatory process—citing the banking and tobacco industries as historical precedents.Of course, antitrust enforcement isn't the only proposal on the table to address people's concerns about price levels, as the current excitement around the "affordability" and "abundance" movements demonstrate. But Yglesias argues neither abundance, affordability nor antitrust is going to drive down nominal prices. As he puts it: the only thing that could do that is “a catastrophic depression…but that's not going to make people happier". Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. We'll let Benjamin Sando, research fellow at the Global Taiwan Institute, and our guest for this week's episode, describe the topic: “From the early days of Han Taiwanese society, through the period of Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) martial law and on to the era of democratization, the influence of Taiwan's gangs has evolved. The activity of some gangs (but not all) has spread beyond extracting profit from local territory – through extortion, prostitution, and gambling – to international transactions involving drug, arms, and human trafficking. This has sowed connections between certain Taiwanese gangs and foreign actors, such as Chinese triads and government officials engaging in united front work for the People's Republic of China (PRC). As elections become more competitive in Taiwan, gangs have leveraged their control of prominent Taiwanese temples to influence politicians seeking support from religious communities. Such deep-rooted connections between gangs and local communities obstruct democratic development based on transparency and open debate, especially in Taiwan's rural areas.”NOTE: This episode has been significantly edited to attempt to adhere to the mostly non-political official stance of the Formosa Files podcast. Today we're talking about the growing controversy surrounding America's relationship with Israel, and the disturbing pattern of censorship that follows anyone who dares to even question it. Why are discussions about foreign influence and government transparency being shut down? Why are prominent voices silenced the moment they speak against powerful interests? We're asking the uncomfortable questions no one in the mainstream media wants to touch, from the suppression of speech to the "alliances" shaping U.S. policy, and praising those few, like Candace Owens, who refuse to back down in the pursuit of real justice and truth. This episode isn't about taking sides, it's about demanding honesty, accountability, and the freedom to ask hard questions without fear.

Politics have had a significant impact on agriculture research in Alberta. The government in that province changed hands with the New Democrats taking power in 2015 and then new United Conservative Party winning the election in 2019. It has been a stressful time for those involved in research. A new organization called Results Driven Agriculture Research or RDAR has been given the responsibility of guiding Alberta’s ag research priorities to ensure they reflect the needs of farmers, ranchers, and others in the agriculture industry.I'll speak with RDAR board chair Dr. David Chalack about this new entity and its role in promoting beneficial research for the ag sector.Prairie honey producers take great pride in their pure product. Tucker Carlson has remained a highly visible presence in right-wing media, with several new developments capturing attention over the past few days. His media company continues to generate buzz among conservative audiences and investors, underpinning his ongoing efforts to build an independent platform outside the traditional cable news ecosystem, according to coverage by Spreaker Inc. Carlson's influence extends well beyond his own shows, as he has increasingly shaped right-wing discourse and amplified alternative narratives, often leveraging digital platforms to bypass contractual barriers that once limited his reach to cable audiences. In one of his most talked-about recent interviews, Carlson appeared on Dan Bongino's show where he discussed the media's handling of sensitive topics, including leaked files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case. The episode created considerable chatter on social media, with Carlson accusing mainstream outlets of withholding key names and details from the public, sparking a wave of speculation and renewed scrutiny of legacy news organizations' editorial decisions.Carlson's recent public appearances have often centered on shaping policy debates within conservative circles. At the latest National Conservatism Conference, where speakers included figures like Steve Bannon and international politicians, Carlson's ideological messaging was hailed as a guiding influence on the broader "America First" movement and its MAGA offshoots, according to reporting from Mother Jones. The conference's agenda was notably policy-driven this year, with sessions focused on overturning established Supreme Court decisions and confronting perceived ideological threats on university campuses. Carlson's presence and rhetoric at such forums have helped situate him at the intersection of media influence and activist policymaking, intensifying debates over his role in both shaping and reflecting the direction of modern conservatism. On the legal and professional front, while the aftershocks of Fox News' record $787.5 million settlement with Dominion Voting Systems over false election fraud claims continue to reverberate, Carlson himself remains the subject of speculation regarding potential testimony or statements about those events. Although Fox News settled before Carlson and other top hosts were required to testify, his critics and some rival commentators have continued to press for a full public accounting of his role in the network's editorial decisions during the aftermath of the 2020 election. This ongoing scrutiny has been highlighted by comedians and late-night hosts—like Jordan Klepper—who recently dramatized what an “apology” from Carlson might sound like, reigniting public discussion about network accountability and the influence of high-profile commentators on the spread of misinformation.Reactions to Carlson's recent statements remain sharply divided along partisan lines. Supporters praise his willingness to challenge the mainstream consensus and platform controversial guests, arguing that he exposes truths often ignored by establishment media. Critics, meanwhile, accuse him of amplifying conspiracy theories and stoking polarization, particularly on issues related to national identity, immigration, and responses to international conflicts. Carlson's engagement with figures like Viktor Orbán and other international populists continues to stoke debate over his embrace of illiberal ideas and his impact on domestic and global political movements. In summary, Tucker Carlson's latest activities reflect his ongoing efforts to propel his brand of commentary to the forefront of the conservative movement, leveraging independent media and high-profile appearances to shape debates on culture, policy, and the future of right-wing politics. Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose 35-per-cent tariffs on imports from Canada starting on Aug. 1. And when it comes to trade negotiations, Canadian dairy – and the supply management system that oversees the industry – is treated like a “sacred cow.”Trump has repeatedly aired frustrations over U.S. dairy farmers' limited access to Canada's market. Despite this, Ottawa has continued to make efforts to protect the industry from trade negotiations – even while Prime Minister Mark Carney makes other concessions. The Globe's agriculture and food policy reporter, Kate Helmore, joins the show to explain how supply management works, why it makes negotiating trade deals around dairy so challenging, and just how much political sway the dairy industry has.Questions? Comments? Ideas? Email us at thedecibel@globeandmail.com

In this episode of Stanford Legal, the tables are turned as Professor Diego Zambrano interviews the show's usual host, Professor Pam Karlan, about the growing politicization of the Department of Justice under the Trump administration. Drawing on her experience in the DOJ's Civil Rights Division during both the Obama and Biden administrations, Karlan describes how recent loyalty tests, internal purges, and retaliatory transfers have hollowed out one of the nation's most critical legal institutions. Karlan and Zambrano explore how the DOJ has historically relied on a “thin layer” of political leadership atop a deep bench of expert, nonpartisan career lawyers—and why that structure is now under threat. They discuss the DOJ's broad civil rights mandate, the challenges of a politicized environment, and the legal and moral consequences of eroding prosecutorial independence. The conversation makes the case that what's happening now is not just a policy shift—it's an institutional crisis that threatens the rule of law and the very idea of justice in America. Over the past 25 years, China's military engagement with Africa has grown dramatically. In 2000, fewer than 5% of African weapons came from China. Today, Chinese-made armored vehicles are used by 70% of African militaries, and China has become the continent's largest arms supplier. Officer training programs have followed a similar trajectory. At the turn of the century, fewer than 200 African officers were trained in China; today, that number exceeds 2,000. Paul Nantulya, a veteran China–Africa military analyst and research associate at the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, joins Eric and Cobus to unpack his latest findings on how Beijing is deepening its defense ties across the continent. In this episode, I delve into the fascinating history of Silicon Valley with Margaret O'Mara, a professor of American History at the University of Washington and a leading historian of Silicon Valley. We explore the relationship between the public and private sectors that fueled the growth of Silicon Valley, debunking the myth of the lone entrepreneur and highlighting the significant role of Cold War defense spending. Margaret shares insights from her celebrated book "The Code" which tells the behind-the-scenes story of the people who built Silicon Valley and shaped Big Tech. We also discuss the impact of elections on tech policy, the evolving influence of tech in Washington, and the rise of AI. We also discuss the parallels between today's tech landscape and the Gilded Age, the importance of historical perspective, and the future of tech innovation amid increasing US-China tensions and energy concerns.(00:00) Introduction(04:18) From Politics to Tech History(06:02) The Cold War Origins of Silicon Valley(08:30) The Human Storytelling Behind Tech(11:18) Is Silicon Valley A Meritocracy?(17:38) Tech's Political Influence(22:13) The Emergence of the Tech Right(23:01) A New Gilded Age(26:47) Antitrust & Regulation(31:06) What Democrats Need(36:10) Future of AI and Crypto(36:38) The 2024 Elections(39:37) China and the New Cold War(40:23) US Government Spending and Innovation(42:01) Defense Tech(45:45) The Role of Universities and Big Tech(52:27) The Rise of AI(56:56) Energy Concerns in AI(01:03:20) The Value of History
In today's episode, we examine the intensifying public rift between Elon Musk and Donald Trump. The catalyst? Trump's recently proposed “Big Beautiful Bill” which notably removes federal subsidies that have historically benefited Musk's ventures. Elon has not remained silent, and tensions escalated further when he retaliated by implying that Trump is listed among Jeffrey Epstein's known associates, suggesting this as the reason the full client list remains sealed.Major accusation. Is this an authentic ideological clash, or a calculated distraction? From Musk's public criticism of the Republican "Big Beautiful Bill" to Trump suggesting Musk suffers from "Trump Derangement Syndrome," and then to Musk dropping the bombshell of the so-called "Epstein files," the conflict between the two escalated rapidly within a single day, with their war of words intensifying online. This episode unpacks this firestorm that has captivated public attention. We explore whether this feud stems from a clash of principles or a naked conflict of interest. We assess the true extent of Musk's influence within the Republican Party and the MAGA movement, and whether he overestimated his own standing. Finally, we analyze how this fallout will impact the prospects of the "Big Beautiful Bill" bill in the Senate. This episode was recorded on June 5, 2025, at approximately 10 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time. 【Support Us】 If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: Join our membership program: https://theamericanroulette.com/paid-membership/ Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/americanroulette Business Inquiries and fan mail: american.roulette.pod@gmail.com 【Timeline】 00:00:36 Trump and Musk's Public Fallout 00:07:11 Three Theories Behind the Fallout: A Clash of Principles, a Conflict of Interest, or a Long-Building Feud? 00:14:04 The Fallout's Impact on the 'Big and Beautiful Bill': Senate Politics and the Bill's Future 00:17:43 An Opinion Leader or a Liability? Today, on the Voxology podcast, hosts Mike Erre and Tim Stafford discuss Jesus' example of cruciformity on the cross in forgiving his enemies. Tim and Mike explore various themes surrounding the life and death of Jesus, drawing parallels to contemporary issues and cultural narratives. They discuss the significance of the cross, the nature of betrayal and denial, and how Jesus responded to suffering with love and forgiveness. Further, they touch on the anti-empire narrative present in the Bible and the importance of curiosity and imagination in understanding faith today. But first, Mike and Tim discuss the intersection of faith and politics, particularly in light of recent developments regarding religious liberty and the role of the church in society. They explore the implications of political leaders invoking Christianity, the importance of prophetic voices in challenging the status quo, and the need for active resistance against injustice. The conversation emphasizes the significance of community engagement and the church's responsibility to embody justice and love in a polarized world. Gombis quote: “My job is to study the Bible and to think critically about how to attend to it most faithfully. I have come to see that this involves relentlessly excavating the self-deceptions that are necessary for me to feel comfortable in this world. My main challenge is that I inhabit an evangelical culture in America that will fight to the death to maintain its self-deceptions and its pursuit of comfort in this world." In President Donald Trump's recent joint address to Congress, he said, "To unshackle our economy, I have directed that for every one new regulation, ten old regulations must be eliminated." Elon Musk, whom Trump has assigned to execute this vision, has argued that it is time to get rid of all regulations, or as Musk said, “regulations, basically, should be default gone.”Joining Bethany and Luigi to discuss this intensified commitment to deregulation and laissez-faire capitalism is Sam Peltzman, perhaps the leading living expert on the economics of regulation. Peltzman is the Ralph and Dorothy Keller Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business and director emeritus of the Stigler Center, which sponsors this podcast and is named after his mentor, Nobel-Prize laureate George Stigler. Together, the three of them chart a historical perspective on regulation, from Stigler's ideas of regulatory capture to the unintended consequences of deregulatory efforts over time to today's “chainsaw” approach to gutting federal agencies. To understand the costs and benefits of regulation, they discuss how federal agencies have recently intervened in markets, if the private sector could not have accomplished these interventions more efficiently, and if these interventions did more harm than good. Their case studies include the funding, testing, and rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, the regulation of cryptocurrencies, the management of the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, and the role of the government in addressing climate change. In the process, they answer the trillion-dollar question: Are Trump's deregulation efforts actually efficient?Episode Notes:Revisit our recent episode with Federico Sturzenegger, the Argentinian Minister for State Transformation and DeregulationRead the op-ed Bethany mentions writing in the wake of the financial crisis: Who Wants a 30-Year Mortgage? At the end of the conversation with Peltzman, Luigi asks him about his recent academic papers tracing marriage and happiness. Read these papers on the Stigler Center's Working Paper archives: The Socio-Political Demography of Happiness (2023) and The Anatomy of Marital Happiness (2025)
