As a fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel continues to hold for now, the government is working to get more than 200 New Zealanders out of the region, though some are trying to make their own way home in difficult and dangerous circumstances. New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters is urging them to hunker down and stay safe, as a New Zealand Defence Force Hercules makes its way to the Middle East to help bring them home. The almost two weeks of conflict and a temporary airport closure in Qatar has caused chaos at the borders and some frightening encounters for kiwi travellers. Some of the lucky ones landed safely back on New Zealand soil today. Mary Argue reports.

After weeks of rising tensions, the Iran-Israel conflict escalated on Saturday night when the US launched strikes on three key Iranian nuclear sites, using powerful bunker-busting bombs designed to hit even the most fortified targets. So now the big questions are—what does the US getting involved mean for Iran, for the region, and for India? To help us unpack this, we're joined by The Indian Express' Diplomatic Affairs Editor, Shubhajit Roy.Written, hosted and produced by Shashank BhargavaEdited and mixed by Suresh Pawar

The Washington Roundtable discusses the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, and the possibility that the United States will join the fray by bombing Iranian nuclear facilities. They are joined by Karim Sadjadpour, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a longtime Iran expert. “What is going to drive events is not the national interest of the United States or the national interests of Iran, but this duel between these two men, Donald Trump and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei,” Sadjapour says. “What I really fear is that both of these men feel like their honor is on the line.” This week's reading:“Donald Trump's No-Strategy Strategy on Iran,” by Isaac Chotiner“The Trump Crackdown on Elected Officials,” by Jonathan Blitzer“What Is Israel's Endgame with Iran?” by Robin Wright“The Military's Birthday Parade Rolls Quietly Through Trump's Washington,” by Antonia Hitchens“After Attacking Iran, Israel Girds for What's Next,” by Ruth Margalit“Why Netanyahu Decided to Strike Iran Now,” by Isaac Chotiner“President Trump's Military Games,” by Ruth Marcus“Is the Anti-Trump Opposition Getting Its #Resistance Back?” by Jon AllsopTune in wherever you get your podcasts. It questions the viability of using bunker busters on deep underground facilities, noting concerns over effectiveness and US involvement risks. The episode critiques political leadership in Israel regarding security breaches and praises President Trump's preference for negotiations over military conflict. Emphasizing peace through strength, it also raises issues with US intelligence failures and calls for transparency to prevent global tensions. ------------------------------------------------- Dr. Keith Rose discusses Israel's successful military actions against Iran, employing cyber and drone tactics that proved more effective than initially expected. In contrast, the US military-industrial complex and Biden administration took a different approach, which may have been less strategic. Iran responded with limited missile attacks, revealing vulnerabilities exposed by Israel's operations. The potential use of a bunker buster weapons is questioned for its effectiveness against such a deeply underground facility and the risks of revealing US involvement. The host critiques political dynamics within Israel, particularly leadership issues near Gaza. President Trump is praised for preferring negotiations over war, aligning with a peace-through-strength strategy. Intelligence failures regarding Iran's nuclear capabilities are highlighted, linked to concerns about a "deep state" undermining Trump, suggesting reforms in national security. --- Connect with The Scalpel: Website: https://scalpeledge.com Email: KFR@scalpeledge.com TruthSocial: @scalpeledge Rumble: @TheScalpel X: @TheScalpelEdge Instagram: @TheScalpelPodcast /// The Scalpel is proud to partner with Brickhouse Nutrition. With conflict in the Middle East is dominating the headlines, the New Statesman's Rachel Cunliffe joins the podcast team to explore Keir Starmer's attempts to influence Donald Trump and ask whether the UK has a role to play beyond that of a concerned bystander. There is plenty of domestic politics around too, with the prime minister announcing an inquiry into grooming gangs - having said, only a few months ago, that he wouldn't – and the government trying to face down a rebellion over its welfare budget cuts. A new, long-feared frontline opens in the Middle East as President Trump considers US involvement. Plus, what didn't happen at the G7 Summit, political violence rattles America, and a bizarre museum mishap poses a moral dilemma.
The Trump administration has warned Iran of grave consequences if it continues its nuclear ambitions, as Israel and Iran trade missiles with no clear path to ending the conflict. Meanwhile, Australia has closed its embassy in Tehran, with thousands registering for assistance to leave.
The Middle East is on fire. Again. What began as Israel's retaliation against Hamas after the October 7 attacks has now exploded into a multi-front conflict involving Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and now Iran. In this episode of In Our Defence, veteran journalist and national security expert Sandeep Unnithan joins host Dev Goswami to break down how the war escalated so dramatical, and what it means for the region and the world. The two look at Iran's underestimated military, its dual-army structure, and the massive blow dealt to its leadership in just the first week of fighting. Why does Israel seem so unbending, even at the cost of global condemnation and regional chaos? And could any of this be happening without backing from the US? Dev and Sandeep also explore the philosophical irony behind Western nations - especially the US - dictating nuclear rules to countries like Iran, even as they maintain massive arsenals themselves. Is this another chapter in global double standards? And finally, the two unpack a surprising development: Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir's meeting with Donald Trump during his US visit. Could this signal a renewed American effort to position Pakistan as a behind-the-scenes player in the Israel-Iran war? Produced by Garvit Srivastava Sound mixed by Rohan Bharti

What happens when a Muslim from Iran meets Jesus in America - then watches his homeland go to war with Israel? Shah Afshar was born and raised in Iran, shaped by a shame-based culture, a devout Muslim family, and the pressure to uphold family honor. But everything changed when he encountered a group of joyful American college students and heard the name of Jesus - not as a prophet, but as Savior. In this episode, Shah shares his powerful journey from Islam to Christianity, the cultural weight of honor and shame, and what he sees unfolding in the Middle East today. With a foot in both worlds, he gives insight few can offer: why 80% of Iranians quietly cheer when Israel strikes military targets…and why Persians and Jews have a deeper shared history than most realize. Key Takeaways Why Shah sees honor and shame as central to understanding Iranian culture What it's like to leave Islam and follow Jesus as a Persian The truth about Iran's Jewish population - and how Persians and Jews once lived side by side Why many Iranians support Israel in secret How Jesus - not politics - is the only path to true peace in the Middle East Chapter Markers 00:00 – Meet Shah Afshar: From Iran to the U.S. 03:00 – Growing up Muslim in a shame-based culture 05:45 – Depression, academic pressure, and thoughts of suicide 08:00 – The hippies who introduced him to Jesus 10:30 – Calling on Jesus without theology - and finding peace 13:15 – Starting the first Iranian Christian church in America 15:00 – What changed after the revolution in Iran 18:30 – Why many Iranians secretly support Israel 21:00 – The cost - and hope - of a Persian uprising 24:00 – Jesus as the only answer to generational hate 26:00 – Persians are not Arabs: cultural and ethnic clarity 29:00 – Are the Jews still God's chosen people? 32:00 – One new man: Jew and Gentile united in Messiah To learn more about Shah's work and story, visit shahzamfactor.com.
