All the Colours of the Dark by Chris Whitaker: A truly immersive thriller which begins in 1975 when young girls are going missing from a small town in Missouri. Patch Macauley and Saint Brown are best friends - and lonely teenage misfits whose lives are forever changed when Patch gets caught up in one such abduction. They carry the ramifications of that through almost 30 years in lives which are affected by the trauma and see them both constantly searching for something - and someone. This is big, epic, and brilliant. Storm Child by Michael Robotham: This is the 4th and final book in the Cyrus Vance series by this author. Cyrus is a psychologist with his own trauma, who in the first book discovered Evie, a young girl who had been hiding in a room after a particularly violent and unpleasant time in captivity. He works with her to try and help her lead a normal life, but in this latest instalment that all comes crashing down when they're at the beach and see 17 bodies wash up from a refugee boat which capsized at sea, which brings all Evie's own memories flooding back. Michael Robotham is a terrific writer – these books are great and I was very sorry to be saying goodbye to Cyrus and Evie. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Storm Child by Michael Robotham The mystery of Evie Cormac's background has followed her into adulthood. As a child, she was discovered hiding in a secret room where a man had been tortured to death. Many of her captors and abusers escaped justice, unseen but not forgotten. Now, on a hot summer's day, the past drags Evie back as she watches the bodies of seventeen migrants wash up on a Lincolnshire beach. There is only one survivor, a teenage boy, who tells police their small boat was deliberately rammed and sunk. Psychologist Cyrus Haven is recruited by the police to investigate the murders—but recognizes immediately that Evie has some link to the tragedy. By solving this crime, he could finally unlock the secrets of her past. But what dark forces will he set loose? And who will pay the price? Agent Zo by Clare Mulley This is the incredible story of Elzbieta Zawacka, the WW2 female resistance fighter known as Agent Zo, told here for the very first time. Agent Zo was the only woman to reach London from Warsaw during the Second World War as an emissary of the Polish Home Army command, and then in Britain she became the only woman to join the Polish elite Special Forces, known as the 'Silent Unseen'. She was secretly trained in the British countryside, and then the only female member of these SOE affiliated forces to be parachuted back behind enemy lines to Nazi-occupied Poland. There, whilst being hunted by the Gestapo who arrested her entire family, she took a leading role in the Warsaw Uprising and the liberation of Poland. After the war she was demobbed as one of the most highly decorated women in Polish history. Yet the Soviet-backed post-war Communist regime not only imprisoned her, but also ensured that her remarkable story remained hidden for over forty years. Now, through new archival research and exclusive interviews with people who knew and fought alongside Zo, Clare Mulley brings this forgotten heroine back to life, and also transforms how we see the history of women's agency in the Second World War. Author Al Campbell joins us to discuss her debut book 'The Keepers,' a fictionalised account of her own life both as the mother of two autistic boys and the survivor of an abusive parent. Al shares the reasons behind her choice to write fiction instead of memoir, what people don't realise about the life of a full-time carer, and the struggle for disability advocacy. 'The Keepers' is a contemporary Australian novel infused with deep love and wild torment, 'about the damage done by parents who can't love, the failures of a community that only claims to care, and the resilience of those whose stories mostly go untold'. Born in Brisbane, Al Campbell is a mother and full-time carer. Long ago she studied a bit, acted a bit, and pulled a lot of beers. Her first publication was in 'Overland' in 2020, followed by a story in 'Signs of Life.' 'The Keepers' is about issues – and people – that matter to her more than anything. * THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS EPISODE*In this episode, Michael Robotham takes us through the process behind writing his novel Lying Beside You. Lying Beside You is Michael's 17th novel, the third in his Cyrus Haven and Evie Cormac series and it's honestly a masterclass in how to write a psychological crime thriller. We talked about the difference between creating surprise and suspense, a couple of Michael's favourite mantras he applies to his writing, finding new ways to describe the same characters after 9 novels in a series and how to balance how much information you give away in each book in a series. Other topics include writing believable dialogue, creating memorable characters that we care about, the importance of adding a little humour in a psychological thriller and subverting the reader's expectations.*SPOILERS* There are spoilers in this episode so if you haven't yet read the novel and you hate spoilers, make sure you read the book before listening. You'll find links to buy both paperback and ebook versions of Lying Beside You here.ABOUT MICHAEL ROBOTHAMBefore becoming a novelist, Michael Robotham was a former feature writer and investigative reporter working in Britain, Australia and America, and with clinical and forensic psychologists as they helped police investigate complex, psychologically driven crimes. The School for German Brides by Aimie K. Runyan. It's another WW2 story – God knows there are thousands of them and showing no signs of abating. This follows two young women – one of whom, Hanna, is set up to be married to a ghastly Nazi lieutenant, and is sent off to a place as per the title – a posh country house where young women are sent to learn how to be faithful and good wives and mothers and to obey their men thereby honouring the Fatherland. The other, Thilde, is Jewish, abandoned by her husband and needing to evade the authorities, all whilst about to have a baby in parlous circumstances. Thilde is a seamstress and makes clothes for the likes of Hanna, from which point their lives inevitably intersect. I really enjoyed it (after thinking I wasn't going to). Lying Beside You by Michael Robotham who always writes terrific books. This is the third in his series about Cyrus Vance. Twenty years ago, his family was murdered. Only he and his brother survived. Cyrus because he hid. Elias because he was the killer. Now Elias is being released from a secure psychiatric hospital and Cyrus, a forensic psychologist, must decide if he can forgive the man who destroyed his childhood.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
