Good morning, Gus! We're back for 8 episodes, this one from Figure 8 on Chicon, recorded some time ago after Rooster Teeth went under. Please consider less that it's dated and think of it more along the lines of it being a time capsule of the friendship of Gustavo Sorola & Geoff Ramsey after the company they started came to an end. They also talk about Phantom menace 25th, Unfortunates of being a regular, The closure, Moving, Who buys the coffee, Property brothers, Our other podcasts, How to end this show, and a 25 year legacy. Bons plans, anecdotes insolites...

In the midst of a season full of amazing guests, we take a little breather to reflect on some of the recent topics and to apply them to our co-built world! The world of the MNG is complex and interconnected, which makes it absolutely ripe for thinking about matrices of power and privilege. So, we think about geography and space; we think about gender and gender roles; we think about magic; we think about the intersections of identity that might matter both in our world and in the smaller societies within the world. Then, we ask: How does the existence of the MNG complicate or simplify dynamics of power and identity? We also would like to take a moment to remind listeners that we are again eligible for the Hugo Award for Best Fancast! Nominations are open until April 30th, so if you were a member of ChiCon 8 or if you are a member of Chengdu WorldCon, we would love your consideration!

We had a great time rolling out the red carpet in Chicago, and we're excited to release the first set of interviews! The Seanan McGuire interview starts at 2:10. Seanan is a multiple Hugo award winning fantasy and sci fi author, most well known for her Wayward Children series and her Newsflesh zombie series (published under her pseudonym Mira Grant). We talked with her about how she manages to create so much content, what made her want to write about zombies, and her approach to researching her stories (she once gave herself a tapeworm to prep for a book about parasites!)The Ryka Aoki interview starts at 15:47. Ryka's breakout novel Light from Uncommon Stars came second in the Hugo voting this year. We talked with her about the book, making music, why she loves donut shops (and how she managed to include them in a sci fi novel), and queerness and what it means to be 'normal'.The interview with Joe and Gay Haldeman starts at 42:13. Joe is most famous for his novel The Forever War (which we talked with him about in a previous episode), as well as the Nebula award winning book Camouflage. We talk with Joe and Gay about Camouflage, the Bataan death march, as well as hanging out with Arthur C. Clarke, Gene Wolf, and Robert Silverberg at sci-fi conventions over the years. If you want to see photos from the red carpet, check them out on twitter or instagram! And if you want to see the rest of the interviews from ChiCon with other content creators, we'll be releasing those on our YouTube channel.
Special interview with Michael Dunn! Chicon 8 is coming up! Try to be there! Thoughts on Amazon's "The Rings of Power," and Nexflix possibly pulling the plug on "The Sandman." Multiple writers groups springing up all over Milwaukee. Timothy Zahn gets poured a Cold One.
One week in front of WorldCon 2022 (Chicon 8) and DragonCon 2022 we will be flooded with major and minor works of Science Fiction, Horror and Fantasy that promise to thrill and amaze, but with improved investigatory techniques and more people willing to speak out, we are also inclined to be presented with information about our favorite authors, directors, artists and other creators that rub us the wrong way. How do we, in the information age balance our love of the genre works with our disappointment and sometimes contempt for the people that create them? Join us tonight to discuss your and our methods for surviving the cringy creator.

Keith Zeiler knows a thing or two about pet nutrition, and wanted to share that knowledge with his community, so he opened Paws on Chicon, a boutique pet store that focuses on your furry friend first. Through a well-educated staff and a careful selection of products, he's grown his business and added a second location that is almost a carbon-copy of the first, keeping things consistent and helping pet owners find the best food and treats for their dogs and cats.
We've talked about big holidays and religious observations before, but what about the small, weird, highly-location-specific festivals and traditions that might dot the landscape of your world? From cheese-rollings to local saints' days to parades to "hey, all our squash came ripe at once, guess we better do something with it!", how do the people in your world make their lives a little more interesting with periodic celebrations? We also invent some tiny, specific festival occurrences for our co-created world! Transcript for Episode 80 (Would you like to join our scribal team and get early access to episodes? Shoot us an email at worldbuildcast@gmail.com for details!) Hugo Voting is now open, and we'd love your consideration for Best Fancast! The Hugo packet, which you get for an Attending or Supporting membership, gets you an absolutely boggling amount of reading, viewing, and listening material. Your hosts will also be at ChiCon 8 for the Hugos, and before that we'll be at ArmadilloCon in Austin, TX -- so if you'll be at either, please come say hi!
We kick off our fourth year of the podcast with a conversation about how to fill in the rest of your world, beyond the immediate scope of your plot. What's outside the borders your characters are familiar with? What's beyond the woods we know? Is it "here there be dragons" or a highly-detailed map with every corner marked? Your methods of showing that may vary depending on if your characters are isolated village folk, citizens of a bustling port town, or merchants moving through many cosmopolitan surroundings. Choices you make here can both create a fuller, more lived-in world and help a reader get inside a character's perspective. Also! In this episode, we set ourselves a pretty big goal for the fourth season. Be sure to listen to the end to find out what it is! Also also! This week's discussion begins with Gary wondering about what he tentatively calls the use of absurdism in some recent novels, mentioning Kelly Barnhill's When Women Were Dragons and Sunyi Dean's forthcoming The Book Eaters, each of which features a powerful central metaphor that refuses to resolve itself into traditional SF or fantasy systems—somewhat like the old Theatre of the Absurd playwrights like Ionesco. This leads to yet another discussion of what may be happening with the notion of genres, and how an earlier generation of gatekeeping editors has given way to editors more welcoming to a variety of voices and approaches. We more or less conclude that, while this reinvigorates the traditional genres, there are plenty of options for readers who still prefer the familiar formulas and traditions. Finally, we talk a bit about getting together for a possible live podcast at Chicon later this summer.

However, later, in 1905 formerly enslaved African persons Thomas J. White and his wife, Maddie B. Haywood, founded the Travis County Emancipation Celebration Association and, two years later, they pooled enough community resources to purchase five acres of land on Rosewood Avenue and Chicon and named it Emancipation Park. They believed that Black people should celebrate Juneteenth on Black-owned land. It was their own piece of freedom. It was their own piece of property. Emancipation Park lasted for over 20 years until the City of Austin seized the privately-held land through a process called ‘eminent domain' and constructed the first federally-funded housing projects named Rosewood Courts, which still occupy the space today. To comply with the city-enacted mandate, enforced by the ‘Separate but Equal' doctrine of U.S. law, the Negro District was created in East Austin, east of East Avenue, which is present-day I-35. The Negro District would house all of the segregated facilities within the city, including a park—a park that we now know as Rosewood Park. From that point on, the limited resources that the city would invest and put into Black recreation, leisure, and services went into Rosewood Park. But despite all of the violence that created Rosewood Park for the Black population, Black people in Austin still made it their own.

Ben Edgerton is the visionary behind the neighborhood hot spot, Contigo Austin (@contigoaustin). A true Texan at heart, Ben grew up in San Antonio, spending time on his family's original Contigo ranch. After a stint doing advertising in New York and promoting music shows, he came back to ATX to dive into food service, and wound up turning a lonely gravel lot into an ad-hoc beer garden, which evolved into Contigo. You could say Ben stays focused on making the vibe of an experience work. Recently, he wrapped up his Chicon concept to make room for Last Straw, a vibrant tropical-late-eighties hangout spot on the eastside. We talked about switching gears with careers, ranchin', designing experiences, working with longtime friends, and then some. Get 'cha some!
