WITF story honored with a national Edward R. Murrow Award

WITF and Tim Lambert received some good news last week. Tim's story about his father being one of the last living witnesses to a unique atomic test in the 1950's was honored with a national Edward R. Murrow Award for best use of sound. Director of Journalism Scott Blanchard who was Tim's editor for the project sat down with Asia Tabb to talk about the impact of this story. “The Murrow Awards are among the most prestigious in the industry. The Radio Television News Directors Association presents Murrow Awards for first in 14 regions across the US. Broken down by the size of the market a station serves, and then the regional honorees are judged, and one story is recognized as the best among all regions in its market size. As the organization says, stories must uphold the RTDNA Code of ethics, demonstrate technical expertise, and exemplify the importance and impact of journalism as a service to the community, so they honor the dedication and excellence that broadcaster Edward R Murrow was known for. This is the seventh time that Tim has received a national Murrow, and the 18th time for WITF since 2007. So, it's a big deal to be honored on a regional level. And in fact, Tim Story received three regional awards for sound digital presentation and for Feature Story. And I want to take a minute to note that the, did digital producer Jeremy Long, graphic designer Tom Downing, and videographer Doug Watson all played key roles in the project.” The story called “A Pennsylvania man saw the true power of Atomic Annie,” is about Tim's father, who was in the Army, witnessing a nuclear test in the Nevada desert in 1953. “It was the only time that a tactical nuclear device was fired from a cannon. So it was a massive logistical undertaking. And a lot of that comes through in Tim's story. And in May 1953, when that test took place, the Korean War was on going, and North Korea and Russia were paying really close attention to what the U.S was doing. So, as you'll hear, the historian that Tim talked to, you say the U.S. was very much sending a message to those adversaries with this test. So this is a fascinating story about Tom Lambert's personal experience amid the bigger picture. Of this, event that had such international impact. And it's also a story that lives in American cultural history, the whole atomic age.”  Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This initial step serves as a guiding force throughout his editing process, shaping the narrative and enhancing the overall impact of the final product. In a podcast episode, Jesse explains that he meticulously builds a soundtrack for each project by curating a playlist of real music that aligns with the desired vibe of the show. He spends days or even weeks on this process, selecting tracks that evoke specific emotions and set the tone for the storytelling. By immersing himself in the music, Jesse establishes a creative anchor that influences his perspective on the project. Furthermore, Jesse's use of music extends beyond setting the mood. He leverages the soundtrack as a storytelling tool, allowing the music to enhance key scenes, evoke certain emotions, and create a cohesive narrative flow. Whether it's a scene featuring majestic animals, a night dive off the coast, or an exploration of a lagoon, Jesse's curated soundtrack plays a pivotal role in shaping the viewer's experience. By integrating music into his editing process, Jesse not only enhances the visual elements of the project but also adds depth and dimension to the storytelling. His attention to detail and thoughtful selection of music demonstrate his commitment to creating a compelling and immersive viewing experience for the audience. Through his innovative approach to filmmaking, Jesse Khaleesi showcases the power of music as a storytelling tool in the world of wildlife documentaries. Music plays a crucial role in Jesse's editing process, serving as a powerful tool to enhance scenes and elevate the storytelling in the documentaries he works on. Jesse's background in music appreciation and his keen understanding of how music can influence emotions and mood are evident in his approach to editing. He meticulously curates soundtracks for each project, often starting with a playlist of real music to set the tone and mood for the documentary. By creating a soundtrack in advance, Jesse immerses himself in the desired atmosphere of the film even before the footage is edited. This allows him to envision how different tracks will complement specific scenes and evoke certain emotions in the audience. Whether it's a majestic animal encounter, a serene underwater moment, or a thrilling chase sequence, Jesse carefully selects music that enhances the visual storytelling and engages the viewers on a deeper level. Jesse's process of using music as a creative anchor not only guides his editing decisions but also influences the overall narrative arc of the documentaries he works on. The choice of music can set the pace, build tension, convey emotions, and create a cohesive flow throughout the film. By incorporating a variety of music genres and styles, Jesse ensures that each project has a unique and dynamic soundtrack that resonates with the audience. Furthermore, Jesse's ability to connect music with the visuals on screen demonstrates his skill in translating the essence of a scene into a musical language. Whether it's a lighthearted moment, a poignant revelation, or an action-packed sequence, the right music can enhance the impact of the visuals and create a memorable viewing experience for the audience. Jesse's award-winning editing reflects his mastery in using music as a storytelling tool, showcasing his talent in crafting compelling narratives through the harmonious blend of visuals and sound. Jesse's Background in Journalism and Storytelling in Filmmaking Jesse Colaizzi's background in journalism has significantly influenced his approach to storytelling in filmmaking, particularly when it comes to wildlife documentaries. His education in journalism has instilled in him the importance of giving a voice to those who do not have one, which he has translated into his work with animals in his films. Throughout the podcast episode, Jesse mentions how his journalism education taught him to answer the question of "who cares" in every story. This approach has led him to focus on capturing the perspectives of animals in his documentaries, allowing viewers to see the world through their eyes. By giving animals a voice and showcasing their experiences, Jesse's films aim to create a connection between the audience and the wildlife being featured. Jesse's storytelling process often begins with creating a soundtrack for the film, which sets the tone and mood for the entire project. He meticulously selects music that aligns with the narrative and the emotions he wants to evoke in the audience. This attention to detail in choosing the right music reflects his journalistic background, where the goal is to convey a story effectively and engage the audience on an emotional level. Moreover, Jesse's experience in journalism has taught him the importance of taking an alternative perspective on stories. This approach allows him to delve deeper into the lives of animals, understanding their behaviors, challenges, and environments from their point of view. By incorporating this perspective into his filmmaking, Jesse brings a unique and empathetic portrayal of wildlife to his audience. Overall, Jesse Colaizzi's background in journalism has shaped his storytelling approach in filmmaking, emphasizing the significance of giving animals a voice and capturing their perspectives authentically. Through his work, he strives to create compelling narratives that not only entertain but also educate and raise awareness about the importance of conservation and understanding the natural world.

How long does it take for you to choose what to wear in the morning or when going out for an evening? How much time is spent on deciding what to cook? How much time do you spend worrying about what someone says or thinks of you?   Don't get me wrong, learning or keeping up with current affairs is essential, what you put in your body is paramount to maintaining a healthy body. How you look can contribute to a healthy wellness and mindset. But all of these elements can be even more effective when they come from a place of simplicity and are chosen intentionally. While our longer-form episodes help you learn about the latest science and research for the wine industry, these twice-monthly micro podcasts will help you share your dedication to sustainable winegrowing so you can show your customers that you share their values. Newsletters invite your members to form an even deeper affinity with your brand. It's an opportunity to share your brand's history, current projects, and behind-the-scenes details that aren't available through other channels. Need Content? You Got It! A multi-page newsletter gives you more space to work with. While the idea of having several pages to fill and decorate can be exciting to some, others may be intimidated by the task. Being a brand that's passionate about sustainability means you always have something to talk about. Having a handful of Sustainable Stories on deck can be a great asset to your newsletter! SIP Tip: Adjust the amount of detail you go into to fit the space you have. For longer pieces, consider breaking them up into serials. Today we will share two examples of SIP Certified members whose newsletters feature their dedication to sustainability in engaging ways. There are some great images to go along with these, so I highly recommend going to the show notes and clicking on The Best Newsletter You Can Send. Ancient Peaks Ancient Peaks invites their members to understand their deep relationship with the land and their community through their May 2021 newsletter's Feature Story, For the Love of Land & Community. The article shows how and why Ancient Peaks embodies sustainability through colorful photos and specific examples that touch all 7 SIP Certified Values. A QR code on page 4 of the excerpt transforms this newsletter into a multi-media experience! Readers can scan the code to watch a thoughtful explanation from the ranch's owner, Doug Filipponi, on what sustainability is and how they address all three legs of the three-legged stool. Niner Wine Estates Their Spring 2023 newsletter opens with A Note from Winemaker Patrick Muran, giving readers the sense that their shipment was crafted with love and devotion from the entire team at Niner Wine Estates. After providing a rundown of the wines included in their shipment, Niner announces their 2023 Green Medal Sustainability Leadership Award. They explain what the award is, and provide several specific examples of their sustainable practices. Several members of Niner's team are featured in the newsletter, giving it a personable feel and inviting readers to become familiar with the faces behind the wine. More Tips As you saw from these two examples, there are many ways to create a newsletter that's unique and authentic to your brand. Here are three elements both of these examples have in common: Sustainability: Thoughtful “whys” and descriptive “hows” invite your readers to: Make a deeper connection with your brand. Better understand what it means to be sustainable. Teamwork: Quotes and opinions from team members: Give your newsletter a personable feel. Familiarize your readers with your team. Food and Wine: Pairing notes and recipes specific to the wines included in your shipment give: Utility to your readers. A reason to keep your newsletter around for longer! What's YOUR Sustainable Story? We are here to help you tell your customers how your brand protects natural and human resources with the Sustainable Story program. This simple yet powerful free tool helps you tell your own personal sustainable message. And it just got better with a new online course.  Go to the show notes, click the link titled Tell Your Sustainable Story to sign up, download the worksheet, watch the videos, and you are ready to tell your Sustainable Story! We hope you've enjoyed learning about how your peers fulfill the 7 SIP Certified Values as much as we've enjoyed sharing them! Your story can be featured in next year's Sustainable Stories campaign! We are looking for a brand with an innovative approach to one of these three Values.: Water Management Safe Pest Management Energy Efficiency If you have a great Sustainable Story, we will help you tell it. Reach out to me at whitney@vineyardteam.org with a few quick notes! We'll get your story ready to be featured in our newsletter, podcast, online course, and social media, and in magazine articles and influencer campaigns.
