Well we don't have much to talk about but we're back regardless with a new episode. We talk about the addition of Cincinnati transfer Josh Reed but, more importantly, the lack of additions. What this means for the prospects of a successful year 3 for Mike Rhoades and what we want to see the staff accomplish in the next few months (aside from the obvious of just adding players). The 2024-25 College Basketball Season officially came to a close on Monday night and we can begin to look forward (or not) to year 3 of the Mike Rhoades era at PSU. We spend some extra time this episode diving into the longevity (or lack thereof) of the top freshman recruits from years past and wonder aloud if this is a sign of what's to come not just at Penn State but across the college basketball landscape. Episode 27 offers a comprehensive year-in-review of the 2024-2025 college basketball season, examining both expected outcomes and surprising developments as the NCAA Tournament field is set.Bob Moats and Mike Wiemuth analyze the shifting conference power dynamics, team regressions, and unexpected success stories while reflecting on what these patterns reveal about modern college basketball.Segment 1: Conference Consolidation and Power DynamicsThe SEC dominated the tournament field, with all but two conference teams making the tournament, reflecting a growing gap in athletic talent similar to football's development in the 1990sConference consolidation has created clear tiers of power, with the SEC and Big Ten at the top, followed by the Big 12 and ACCThe hosts discuss the "eye test" difference when watching SEC/Big 12 teams compared to other conferences, particularly in athleticism and physicalityTeams like Purdue and UConn experienced predictable regressions after losing transformative players like Zach Edey and Donovan ClinganSegment 2: Surprising PerformancesWisconsin transformed from a traditionally slow, methodical program to a high-scoring team averaging 80 points per gameLouisville under Pat Kelsey made a remarkable turnaround from 8-24 (185th in KenPom) to 27-7 (23rd in KenPom) and an 8-seedPenn State didn't make the expected leap under Mike Rhoades despite early promising signsKentucky, Michigan, and Louisville all exceeded expectations under new coaches despite initial fan skepticism about their hiresHouston became a more complete team by improving their offensive efficiency and three-point shooting while maintaining elite defenseSegment 3: Indiana's Season and Coaching ChangeIndiana finished on the wrong side of the NCAA Tournament bubble as the "first team out" after a disappointing 10-10 conference recordAnalysis of why highly-touted transfer guards Myles Rice and Kanaan Carlyle underperformed relative to statistical projectionsDiscussion of how roster construction and offensive system limited the team's ceiling despite having talented individual playersA brief discussion on the ongoing coaching search, noting that patience is important as the most successful coaching hires often come later in the cycleThis episode provides a thoughtful examination of how program building works in modern college basketball, illustrating how coaching, system fit, and player development determine which teams rise and fall each season. The discussion offers valuable context for understanding the cyclical nature of program success in an era of increased player movement and conference realignment.Links:The Cranberries - Zombie (Alt. Hosts Bob Moats and Mike Wiemuth explore the concept of momentum in college basketball programs - what it really means, how it manifests, and what drives it in both positive and negative directions.Segment 1After briefly discussing recent football playoffs, they dive into defining program momentum and how it differs from game-level momentum. They explore how momentum is more about perception and emotional reactions from various stakeholders (fans, recruits, media, etc.) than purely on-court performance.Key points:Momentum is easier to identify than define - it's like "knowing it when you see it"Social media acts as an accelerator of momentum, both positive and negativeMomentum involves multiple actors including coaches, players, fans, administration, and media all reacting to events and each otherSegment 2The hosts examine specific examples of program momentum, both positive and negative:Penn State under Mike Rhoades showing positive momentum despite coaching changeMichigan's transition from Juwan Howard to Dusty MayNorth Carolina's gradual decline under Hubert DavisVillanova's struggles under Kyle NeptuneThey discuss how momentum can be affected by:Coaching changesRecruiting success/failureFan engagementMedia coverageRegional rivalriesProgram expectationsSegment 3The conversation shifts to Indiana basketball's current momentum situation, examining:Recent recruiting setbacksEarly season performance concernsProgram expectations vs realityThe challenges of rebuilding momentum at a historically prominent programThe episode concludes with a tribute to Dick Van Arsdale, former Indiana University basketball great who recently passed away.Throughout the discussion, Bob and Mike emphasize how momentum is about long-term patterns rather than individual events, and how it's often easier to lose momentum than to gain it, especially after a program's "honeymoon period" ends.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

SJS Hour 2 - 03-22-2024 - Steve discusses how big getting continuity in the Penn State men's basketball program (four coaches since 2020, and all of the last 11 recruits not on campus) is going to be for Mike Rhoades and then the King joins the show to talk some NCAA tournament and some trivia
Former Bucknell coach Pat Flannery joins the show to discuss some things he saw this season at Penn State. What's different from when he coached (and it's not just NIL). Some of the adaptations Mike Rhoades and he had to make to adjust to the Big Ten. Then we discuss NCAA Tournament upsets (Flannery was the head coach when Bucknell beat Kansas in 2005).

On their weekly Penn State football podcast, host Adam Bittner and Post-Gazette/Daily Collegian insider Seth Engle preview spring practice for coach James Franklin's team. Are the Nittany Lions talented enough at wide receiver with the addition of Julian Fleming from Ohio State? What does Drew Allar have to do to take the next step at QB in his second season as a starter? How is Abdul Carter's transition from linebacker to defensive end going? And how are new coordinators Tom Allen on defense and Andy Kotelnicki implementing their visions? Our duo tackles those topics and more in the football realm, including Saquon Barkley's NFL free agent deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, then gets into some basketball topics. What grade does Mike Rhoades deserve for his first reason after replacing Micah Shrewsberry as men's coach? And what kind of heat should coach Carolyn Kieger face after her Lady Lions' collapse that will likely cost them a March Madness bid?

On their weekly Penn State sports podcast, host Adam Bittner and Daily Collegian/Post-Gazette insider Seth Engle analyze a busy week of news around the football and men's basketball programs. Does Abdul Carter's move from linebacker to defensive end help his NFL draft stock as he looks to follow in the footsteps of Micah Parsons? Is new coordinator Tom Allen's unit now better positioned to replace NFL draft prospects Chop Robinson and Adisa Isaac on the defensive line? And are young players including Tony Rojas ready to step into Carter's place?Later, our duo tackles the push by some university trustees to rename the Beaver Stadium field after Joe Paterno. Does it show a lack of focus on helping James Franklin's current program? And would the energy be better spent on bolstering NIL efforts to level the playing field with Michigan and Ohio State. Then to end the show, Adam and Seth weigh in on leading scorer Kanye Clary's dismissal from the basketball program. Is it a net positive for first-year coach Mike Rhoades' program as it looks to figure out its identity? Or would it have been better off figuring out how to use Clary and Ace Baldwin Jr. in the same back court?

On their weekly Penn State football podcast, host Adam Bittner and Post-Gazette/Daily Collegian insider Seth Engle preview the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Bowl for former Penn State stars with eyes on the NFL draft. The Final Four Is Not On The Schedule - A Michigan State Basketball Podcast.
January 2, 2024: Michigan State resumes Big Ten play on Thursday by hosting the Penn State Nittany Lions. Penn State is under new leadership after the departure of Micah Shrewsbury to Notre Dame after the season. Mike Rhoades left VCU to take over the program and has had to rely heavily on the transfer portal to construct a roster. Arguably his best player was on last year's squad, Kanye Clary, who is averaging 18.2 ppg. This team will look and play nothing like last year's 5 out team with an unconventional point guard like Pickett. This team intends to play fast and put a ton of pressure on the ball handlers 94 feet of the court. How MSU handles and attacks the pressure could very well be the key to the game. Are you looking for collegiate apparel including Spartan gear? There's only one place we recommend you go to get your MSU T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts — Nudge Printing. (https://www.nudgeprinting.com) Nudge is owned and operated by Gabe and Brittany, two MSU alums. The business is operated out of Michigan and screen prints super high quality products. They also have a large assortment of apparel for other schools as well as stickers for your wall, car, or computer. If you have a home in Michigan you know the importance of clearing water efficiently away from your home off the roof. Unfortunately, the outdoor beauty of Michigan means you have to deal with leaves and debris that pile up in your gutters. Sometimes, those gutters also can't keep up with the rain or leave puddles by your foundation. If you live in the Grand Rapids area (Muskegon to Saugatuck to Rockford to Lowell) contact Kurt Stauffer at the Brothers that Just Do Gutters. (https://www.brothersgutters.com/grand-rapids-mi/). If you're anywhere in the metro Detroit area the Brothers have you covered too! (https://www.brothersgutters.com/metro-detroit-mi/). They are real professionals who will clean, repair, or replace your gutters and protect your home quickly and efficiently with friendly service. Mention Final Four to get 10% off your gutter work. Have you wondered why the world no longer looks clear out of your windows? Maybe you need a professional to clean them. There's no better option for your window cleaning than your neighborhood window cleaners at the Squeegee Squad. They clean residential, commercial, and high rise windows. Also, if you need power washing on your house, the Squeegee Squad will treat it with kid gloves with their gentle wash that uses low pressure and surfactants. You won't find a better team to care for the exterior or your house or business than the Squeegee Squad of Grand Rapids (https://squeegeesquad.com/locations/grand-rapids-mi/). Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK The Penn State basketball team ended a four-game skid by beating Ohio State 83-80 at home this past weekend. The team was down at halftime before an unexpected rally that featured great three-point shooting, gritty rebounding, and clutch plays. So what can the team take from that win? Will they build on it for the upcoming schedule? We're looking at that and what head coach Mike Rhoades said about his Penn State Hoops team on the Hoops Show. Penn State started the season out with some promising games against non-conference opponents. Then, they hit a tough stretch of games in the ESPN Invitational. Mike Rhoades' team lost three straight to Texas A&M, Butler and Rhoades' old team, VCU. On today's Hoops Show, we discuss what caused the team's three-game losing streak and the thorny issues causing the team's problems. Rhoades says that the tournament was a wakeup call to reality for his team. "When you play in really good tournaments like that, you get exposed quickly. You had some great moments. I thought some guys gave us some really good minutes." "And at times I thought our offense was really good and got some great execution. Just not a consistent enough play on both ends of the court, but especially defense to win those caliber of games. Our effort against Texas A&M I thought it was super. We didn't defensive rebound well enough to win that game. The other two games, I just thought we played frustrated on the defensive end, and it affected us on offense at times." In a word: Defense. The Mike Rhoades' defensive identity that helped to get him this Penn State job fell apart in Orlando during the ESPN Events Invitational, the first Thanksgiving tournament in over a decade in which a PSU team went 0-3. Hour 2 - Steve says Penn State men's basketball this offseason is doing a good job coming together under first year coach Mike Rhoades and its 'headlines' with the king.
Penn State basketball held a media day on July 12 to give a glimpse into the new program's progress under Mike Rhoades. Rhoades and several of his player met with the assembled media before the team held an open practice later that afternoon. BWI Insider Nate Bauer was there to take it all in and provides his insights on today's Hoops Show. Check out the full show wherever you get your podcasts, or enjoy listening to it on the embedded player in this article. Bauer discusses what Rhoades had to say about his team-building philosophy, culture, and his early impressions of his team. Bauer also gives his thoughts about what he saw on Tuesday. You'll also hear from the coach himself as Bauer and host Thomas Frank Carr play clips from this week's press conference. Rhoades shedding folksy narrative Despite leaning heavily on the homecoming aspect of his hiring back in March, Rhoades was decidedly less interested in his roots this week. He made it clear that he has one goal in mind. “I didn't come back here because it's my home state. I came back here because I want to win. And I want to win in the Big Ten, I want to win at a cool university like Penn State,” Rhoades said on Tuesday. Bauer and T-Frank discuss the tonal shift from Rhoades and what sort of culture he's trying to establish at Penn State. Rhoades also gave an initial assessment of his team's performance this summer. You can hear the full quote in the podcast. “I really like our guard play. It's probably a little bit better than I thought it would be. I hope we're a better shooting team than I thought. We have some guys that are really shooting the ball well right now,” he said. “But, the bleachers aren't pulled out, as I say, and the lights aren't on, so that's different. The biggest thing is it's easy in the summer because there's no adversity. Now, the next few weeks you're going to the Bahamas, I'll create a lot more adversity for guys, so I'll understand our team a little bit better with that,” Rhoades said. Roster construction was intentional for Penn State Bauer and T-Frank also discuss the team's roster construction through the transfer portal. The team had to dip heavily into the portal thanks to a mass exodus from the program after Micah Shrewsberry left for Notre Dame. Rhoades explained that the team wanted to build a program for the long term and provide stability and balance to the roster via class eligibility. The team retained three scholarship players this offseason in guards Kanye Clary and Jameel Brown, as well as big-man Demetrius Lilley. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The New Coaches Series continues! Penn State's Mike Rhoades looks to build off the success of last year's team and turn the Nittany Lions basketball program into a perennial power! How does he plan to raise the bar in Happy Valley? What is it like for the Pennsylvania native to call Penn State home? Discussing some of the "out of the box" ideas he has for scheduling. Building a culture of winning and sustained success. The importance of establishing a home court advantage. The challenge of coaching against legends in the league. Thoughts on his initial roster. And does he feel there is a level of separation from power conferences to non-power conferences? Plus, St. John's, USC and Indiana all land top players.
In this episode, Cory Giger poses the question of how much Penn State football fans follow or care about players once they're off to the NFL. He also wraps up the basketball situation and what's in store under new coach Mike Rhoades, plus marvels at Iowa's Caitlin Clark and gets into a ridiculous quote from one women's college basketball player.
