The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping – Propaganda, Complicity, and Haymitch's StoryIn this episode of Superhero Ethics, hosts Matthew and Riki welcome special guest Danielle from WrittenInTheStarWars to dive deep into Suzanne Collins' newest novel in The Hunger Games franchise, Sunrise on the Reaping. The trio explores how this prequel reveals the true story behind Haymitch Abernathy's Games and challenges what readers thought they knew from the original trilogy. What makes Suzanne Collins' writing unique in YA literature? The hosts discuss Collins' masterful use of first-person narrative, with Danielle highlighting how Collins understands both the strengths and weaknesses of this perspective. Her intentional structuring of chapters and story arcs keeps readers engaged while delivering complex themes accessible to young adults without oversimplifying them. The conversation explores Collins' famous quote: “I don't write about adolescents. I write about war for adolescents.”How does propaganda shape the story in Panem?Sunrise on the Reaping reveals how the Capitol manipulates narratives, showing that what Katniss learned about Haymitch's Games was heavily edited propaganda. The book explores how different forms of propaganda work—from entertainment spectacles to subtle messaging that convinces citizens the Games are necessary for peace. Characters like Effie Trinket demonstrate how effective this indoctrination can be, while others show resistance to these manufactured stories. What do we learn about Haymitch as a character? The novel provides a stark contrast between the real Haymitch and the persona crafted by Capitol editors. Readers discover he was someone who refused to think of other tributes as enemies, consistently protected others, and maintained his humanity throughout the Games. The book also reveals his tragic journey toward alcoholism, showing how it began as medical treatment before becoming his coping mechanism for trauma and loss.Other topics discussed:How Maysilee Donner evolves from a "mean girl" to one of the book's most compelling charactersWhy Collins may have written this book now as a response to current political eventsThe difference between how Haymitch's relationship with Maysilee was portrayed in propaganda versus realityThe careful way Collins handles familiar characters from the original trilogy appearing in the prequelThe humanity of Career tributes and how they too are victims of the Capitol's systemThe theme of complicity and how everyone in Panem's system becomes part of maintaining its horrorsThe conversation concludes by reflecting on how Collins uses her storytelling to encourage readers to question propaganda in their own lives and recognize complicity in unjust systems. By revisiting Haymitch's Games, she reminds us that history is often written by the victors—but truth can be a powerful tool for rebellion.LinksFollow these links to earlier discussions on The Hunger Games with Danielle:The Hunger GamesThe Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. In this episode, DG delivers a powerful wake-up call on the "cold, hard truths" of personal development that most spiritual communities gloss over, urging listeners to take radical accountability for their lives and growth.• No one is coming to save you until you start saving yourself – take action and the universe will respond with support• Your perspective of yourself is all that matters – when you adopt others' views of you, you give away your power • Everything that has happened in your life has served you – understanding this shifts you from victim to empowered• Your excuses are just gentle lies that make you feel better – stop cutting yourself short• Sometimes those closest to you unintentionally hold you back – they may still relate to the old version of you• Shadow work is non-negotiable – become aware of what you were previously unaware of• Manifestation requires action – thoughts vibrate too quickly until actions bring them into physical realityThe superpower is accountability – when you know nobody else can save you or do it for you, you step fully into your power as a co-creator of your reality.Book Your DG Mindset Experience Retreat Now Join the Elite Mindset Group Coaching Mastermind Here!

When we set out to create positive change and healing in our lives, those actions must come from a place of love and trust in ourselves. The key is practicing radical acceptance of ourselves and our circumstances. In this episode, you'll learn:Why we struggle to accept realityThe truth about acceptance and taking actionReal life examples of challenging circumstances and how we can be more accepting of them4 steps to practice radical acceptanceThe faster you can accept the hard things in life as reality, the faster you will be able to get into action and take the next right step.-------------------------------------------As you move through your healing journey, you may have experienced times when you made a decision to change something in your life. You made a checklist or a set of rules to follow, but then you didn't end up making as much progress as you wanted. You thought you just must not be good at healing or taking control of your life, so you gave up.Often, this happens because your actions are rooted in shame, guilt, buffering, or trying to avoid pain. To make positive change, you have to come from a positive place. This starts with our previous steps of radical self-love, self-trust, honesty, and listening. The next step in the hierarchy of healing is to accept where you are, accept your current circumstances. Radical AcceptanceAcceptance is the idea that you are okay with what's happening in the present moment. You don't need to judge the moment or your behavior. It's saying, “This is the way things are right now and that's okay.”We're often afraid to fully accept our circumstances because we think that if we're okay with how things are, it implies that we don't care. That we're powerless, defeated, and we'll never take action to improve or grow. But the opposite is true. Acceptance is not about excusing yourself from responsibility or giving up. In fact, the faster you accept your current reality, the easier it will be for your nervous system to calm down and to problem solve. It will be easier for you to show compassion to yourself and get into action. It reminds me of the Buddhist saying that “Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.”There are facts, and there are our interpretations of the facts. Often, it's what we make things mean that hurts us the most. And it is entirely unnecessary. Imagine that you're sitting in horrible traffic. It's unpleasant and uncomfortable to be sitting there waiting for so long. But when you become frustrated, angry, and try to resist it, that's where suffering comes in. You are adding more pain to the moment. Instead, you can choose to accept that there is always a lot of traffic on that particular road, you plan for it, and take different actions (e.g. driving a different route or leaving earlier). When we struggle because we believe something should be different from how it is, we're fighting reality. When we resist our feelings, ourselves, and our experience, we create suffering.Acceptance is going with the flow, and it's what you see in people that seem to be at peace, even when things are chaotic. Accepting Other People's BehaviorRadical acceptance applies to other people's behavior, as well. Maybe your spouse or partner committed to doing something and didn't follow through. Or your kids are misbehaving. You can choose to accept that they are acting the way they're acting. Of course, as parents, we also have a responsibility to teach our kids better ways to behave, manage their feelings, get their needs met, and demonstrate their emotions. So, we do have to take action (more on that next week). For example, you're going...

Hosts Bob Moats and Mike Wiemuth explore the concept of momentum in college basketball programs - what it really means, how it manifests, and what drives it in both positive and negative directions.Segment 1After briefly discussing recent football playoffs, they dive into defining program momentum and how it differs from game-level momentum. They explore how momentum is more about perception and emotional reactions from various stakeholders (fans, recruits, media, etc.) than purely on-court performance.Key points:Momentum is easier to identify than define - it's like "knowing it when you see it"Social media acts as an accelerator of momentum, both positive and negativeMomentum involves multiple actors including coaches, players, fans, administration, and media all reacting to events and each otherSegment 2The hosts examine specific examples of program momentum, both positive and negative:Penn State under Mike Rhoades showing positive momentum despite coaching changeMichigan's transition from Juwan Howard to Dusty MayNorth Carolina's gradual decline under Hubert DavisVillanova's struggles under Kyle NeptuneThey discuss how momentum can be affected by:Coaching changesRecruiting success/failureFan engagementMedia coverageRegional rivalriesProgram expectationsSegment 3The conversation shifts to Indiana basketball's current momentum situation, examining:Recent recruiting setbacksEarly season performance concernsProgram expectations vs realityThe challenges of rebuilding momentum at a historically prominent programThe episode concludes with a tribute to Dick Van Arsdale, former Indiana University basketball great who recently passed away.Throughout the discussion, Bob and Mike emphasize how momentum is about long-term patterns rather than individual events, and how it's often easier to lose momentum than to gain it, especially after a program's "honeymoon period" ends.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Welcome to sci-fi week at LitBits Audiobooks. We are exploring the Infinite: We will share tips for writing Sci-Fi for Aspiring Authors all week.Science fiction is more than just a genre—it's an exciting portal to other worlds, a mirror reflecting society's dreams and dilemmas, and a boundless playground for our imaginations. For aspiring sci-fi authors, the allure of crafting new realms, technologies, and ideologies is exhilarating. But it's also daunting, as the task of building universes and making sense of them can seem like an endless expedition. Here's how you can embrace the challenges and thrill of writing sci-fi, building worlds that captivate and inspire.1. Start with "What If?"Every great sci-fi story begins with a question. "What if we could communicate across galaxies?" "What if humans could live for hundreds of years?" "What if artificial intelligence could evolve beyond our control?" Sci-fi lets you explore these questions in ways other genres can't. Start with a "what if" that excites you and follow it like a breadcrumb trail through your imagination. Think of it as a journey where both you and your readers discover something new at every turn.2. Ground Your Fantasy in RealityThe most compelling sci-fi worlds feel authentic because they're rooted in aspects of our reality. When imagining advanced technologies, futuristic societies, or alien life, draw on real scientific theories and human experiences. Even if the science is speculative, grounding it in known principles gives readers a foothold in your world, helping them suspend disbelief and invest in your story. This connection between fantasy and reality makes sci-fi incredibly powerful—through it, you can reveal truths about our own society, environment, and selves.3. Craft Characters Who Feel RealScience fiction thrives on ideas, but it's the characters who give those ideas life. Readers will follow your protagonists to the farthest reaches of space if they connect with them. Make your characters complex, with goals, flaws, and desires. In a story about technology or alien cultures, relatable characters are the bridge that lets readers understand and empathize with the unfamiliar. Sci-fi legends like Octavia Butler, Philip K. Dick, and Ursula K. Le Guin all created worlds that were as rich in character as they were in concept.4. Experiment with LanguageThe sci-fi genre allows, and even encourages, experimentation with language. This freedom is a gift, so don't be afraid to play with terminology, invented dialects, and futuristic slang. Creating new words and expressions can make your world feel distinct and immersive. However, a good rule of thumb is to balance innovation with accessibility—too much jargon can confuse readers. Use your language experiments to deepen the world and enhance readers' understanding without overshadowing the story itself.5. Tackle Big Themes with SubtletySci-fi is often a vehicle for exploring complex themes—be it the ethics of AI, the impact of climate change, or the nature of human identity. The beauty of science fiction lies in its ability to tackle these themes in nuanced, imaginative ways. Instead of preaching a message, let your story raise questions and inspire thought. Subtlety allows readers to reach their own conclusions, and sometimes a theme is more powerful when hinted at rather than spelled out.6. Build Worlds, But Leave Space for MysteryOne of the joys of sci-fi is the endless detail you can include when world-building. But sometimes, less is more. Rather than explaining every aspect of your world, leave space for mystery. Let your readers wonder about the unknowns—it's this sense of the unexplored that makes sci-fi feel boundless. Describe just enough for readers to fill in the gaps with their own imagination; this can make the world feel even more immersive and infinite.7. Embrace the UnknownScience fiction often grapples with the "unknown." Writing sci-fi means embracing uncertainties, be it unknown technologies, alien cultures, or the vastness of space itself. This openness to the unknown not only expands your creative freedom but also helps you approach your story with a sense of curiosity. Let yourself wonder—what might we become in 1,000 years? How might we change as we interact with the universe around us? There are no wrong answers in sci-fi, only paths waiting to be explored.8. Draw Inspiration from the Greats, but Find Your Own VoiceRead the classics of science fiction to understand how others have grappled with the genre. But remember, your voice is unique and vital to the future of sci-fi. Look to authors like Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, and Frank Herbert not as blueprints but as springboards to discover your own style. Sci-fi is evolving rapidly, and the genre needs fresh voices, perspectives, and ideas to keep expanding.9. Don't Fear ExperimentationSome of the best science fiction has come from writers willing to push boundaries and take risks. Explore odd structures, unusual timelines, or new perspectives. Try writing a story from an alien's viewpoint, or using second-person narration. Sci-fi readers tend to be open-minded and love seeing something they've never seen before. Experimentation is where the genre thrives, so feel free to test your limits.10. Remember That Sci-Fi Is Ultimately About HumanityAlthough sci-fi often involves aliens, robots, and distant planets, at its heart, it's about humanity—our hopes, fears, and endless drive to understand the universe and ourselves. Science fiction allows us to see our own society and psyche in a different light. Through sci-fi, you have the chance to explore what it means to be human and how we relate to technology, nature, and the unknown.Writing science fiction is like venturing into an uncharted frontier. It's a genre that celebrates exploration and innovation, encouraging authors to dream big and think differently. So, trust your curiosity, let your imagination lead the way, and remember that every sci-fi legend was once a beginner too. Keep writing, keep wondering, and who knows? One day, your stories may inspire a new generation of dreamers. If you want to find out more about sci-fi at the Tale Teller Club, stay tuned all day because we are embracing the weird and wonderful genre that has captivated storytellers for generations. This is a LitBits Audio™ podcast by the Tale Teller Club.

That's the thing about the future's work and foresight work is you need a very broad range of thinkers. You need people from different perspectives who speak different languages and who recognize different worldviews. I think that's always why artists will be important in that process, because they are not necessarily coming from sort of mainstream culture. They may be immersed, raised in mainstream culture, but they're often trying to say, hey, there are other ways of seeing the world, and there are other ways of responding to the world that we're in right now.I first met Zan Chandler in 1999 when we were both starting work at the Canada Council for the Arts running arts programs. I've kept in touch with Zan over the years and have followed her career as an arts educator and expert in foresight. I've always been fascinated with various forms of futuring so I was happy when Zan clarified, for example, the difference between forecasting and foresight. We also talked about foresight into the future of the arts and how the arts can help us anticipate better futures. Zan's journey in the arts and foresight fields began with her background in linguistics, shifting to arts through photography and film, leading to work at the Department of Canadian Heritage on arts and film policy and now at Policy Horizons Canada. During our conversation Zan notes that artists are good at sensing societal shifts and addressing various forms of injustices. Our conversation explored the potential of art and artists in foresight work, such as storytelling and emotional connections. Zan suggests that the inclusion of artists in foresight work can help challenge our assumptions and introduce new and valuable perspectives. We also talked about the impact of COVID: While I might have been a little doom and gloom about what happened during COVID and how devastating some of the impacts were on the arts community, I think one thing that came through strongly for me was how the innate need to create together, regardless of what the context was, remained. And we have so many examples of the creative sector coming together to raise spirits and to create in ways, in new ways.My takeaway, if not my prognosis, is that we need to be prepared for multiple outcomes while remaining open and actively working on new possibilities. Zan reminds us that:That's the idea around foresight. If you imagine that it's possible, you've at least started to think about : what do I have to do if this happens and how do I recognize that it might be beginning to happen. If you are interested in exploring ways of being and perceiving that likely different to what you were exposed to in school and at work, Zan recommends the following books as a good start:Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall KimmererSand Talk: How Indigenous Thinking Can Save the World by Tyson YunkaportaThe work of Gabor Mate and Bessel van der Kolk*Sections (generated by AI and reviewed by Claude Schryer)Introduction to the PodcastThe podcast kicks off with a warm welcome to Zan, highlighting her long-standing connection and the intent to explore the intersection of arts and foresight.Zan's Journey into Arts and ForesightZan shares their unique background, detailing their unexpected journey from linguistics to the arts and eventually into the foresight field, shaped by their experiences in Canada and abroad.Understanding Foresight vs. ForecastingThe conversation delves into the distinctions between forecasting and foresight, emphasizing the importance of recognizing multiple possible futures rather than predicting a singular outcome. The Arts as a Form of ForesightZan discusses the role of the arts in anticipating future social and technological changes, citing Marshall McLuhan's insights on how art acts as an early warning system for societal shifts.Balancing Hope and RealityThe discussion shifts to the challenges posed by climate change and societal trends, exploring how to maintain a positive outlook amidst overwhelming negative information. The Role of Technology and SpiritualityZan reflects on the intersection of technology and spirituality in addressing future challenges, considering how a broader interpretation of technology can influence our survival.Ancestral Knowledge and Connection to the PlanetThe conversation highlights the importance of ancestral knowledge and the need to reconnect with our roots and the planet, emphasizing how this connection can inform foresight practices. The Interconnectedness of History and FutureZan and Claude discuss how understanding history is crucial for anticipating future changes, noting that many current issues are rooted in long-standing historical processes.Empowering Artists Through ForesightIn this chapter, the discussion revolves around how everyday artists can leverage foresight methodologies to enhance their creative practices and navigate post-COVID challenges. The importance of understanding cultural and historical contexts in foresight is emphasized as a means for artists to feel more engaged in their work.Artists as Natural Foresight PractitionersThe conversation highlights how artists inherently possess skills relevant to foresight, such as making connections and responding to societal changes. The speakers advocate for artists to recognize their unique contributions and consider integrating foresight methodologies into their practices. The Role of Assumptions in ForesightThis chapter delves into the significance of questioning assumptions within foresight work, particularly in policy contexts related to the arts. The speakers discuss how assumptions about touring and audience engagement were challenged during the pandemic, prompting a reevaluation of the art sector's future.Adapting to Change: Lessons from COVID-19Reflecting on the impact of COVID-19, the speakers discuss how the pandemic revealed vulnerabilities in the arts sector's assumptions about gathering and touring. They explore the resilience of artists and the potential for innovative adaptations in response to ongoing global challenges. The Arts in Times of CrisisThe discussion shifts towards the vital role of the arts during crises, emphasizing how storytelling and creativity can foster community resilience. The speakers look forward to exploring historical and future perspectives on the arts' contributions in challenging times.Creativity Amidst ConstraintsThis chapter celebrates the arts' ability to thrive under constraints, showcasing examples of global collaborations that emerged during the pandemic. Growing up as a first-generation Korean-American, I was raised to believe that meeting “perfect” milestones would make me happy. There was never any letter other than an A on my report cards, a number other than 1600 on my SATS (and PSATS), or a university I attended with a ranking less than #1 in the nation (ok, don't hate me – I promise it's not all sunshine and rainbows). But while I was on this seemingly “perfect path of perfectionism”, I was also the most unhappy I've ever been. This track was making me miserable rather that making me happy – which is exactly what I WASN'T expecting. And after crawling out from underneath my desk (literally), I burned out – quite literally - and realized I had failed to maintain this ‘perfect' lifestyle.Join me on this episode of The Shinah Show as I recount my life story through a lens of perfectionism and share with you:How perfection eventually became my façade to hide behind, rather than my realityThe lengths I've gone to in order to maintain my “perfect” recordsHow crippling the pressure of perfectionism can beHow I dug myself out of a constant cycle of burnout – and how you can, tooI hope this episode speaks to all of you with perfectionist tendencies, and shows you that we ALL need to give ourselves a little more grace, a little less judgement, and a damn chance to rest sometimes.
