“Your resume gets you in the door. Your performance keeps you in the room.”   When my friend and Monday's podcast guest, Seth Berger, spoke those words it gave me a much needed reminder…   Our impact…our leadership…our MISSION…   It's not about what we did or about what title we hold…   It's about the progress we're making…   It's about the steps we're taking to fulfill our calling in each of the roles we play each day - spouse, parent, athlete, leader, ___________ (fill in your blanks).   In today's 5-Minute Drill, I share an epiphany I had about getting into a better position in life and our careers, but then leveraging that position to make progress towards our ultimate goals.    This epiphany came during a recent grappling session I had with one of my black belt brothers at my Gracie Jiu Jitsu gym, 6 Levels.   If you want to make more progress in your life and career and learn more about this simple, yet profound revelation I got, then lock in to today's drill.   LET'S GET IT!   [00:01 - 08:01] Opening Segment Story about J.R. learning a key lesson from a brazilian jiu jitsu black belt   [08:02 - 10:33] What's The Drill?  Step 1 - Audit all the important areas of your life - your mission, your relationships, your finances, etc. Identify any areas of resistance…those areas that are causing some frustrations or making you feel like you're not making the progress you want at the pace you want…or even those areas that you feel exposed to risk.   Step 2 - Pick one area that's causing you the most resistance.   Step 3 - Determine what a normal step would be to move in the right direction. But don't stop there. Does that feel like a big step for you or a BABY step for you? If it feels too big, what's an even smaller step you could take?   Step 4 -  Make your move!   [10:34 - 12:46] Wrapping Up! What's coming up on the next episode  Final words    KEY QUOTES “Progress over position.” - J.R. “Most of your progress will come as a result of a series of baby steps, not a big one.” - J.R. “Let your goals and dreams stretch you. Today I get to chat with Maggie Noe and Marine Nimblette who earlier this summer began collaborating on Businesses United in Diversity and will be having their first event this Saturday in Uptown Kingston at the DMV lot.Maggie Noe, an undergrad double-majoring in International Area Studies and Business at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. An alumna of Kingston High School and resident of Woodstock, NY, Maggie has been connected to the community for her whole life, and is now finding a way to give back by hosting a COVID-19 relief event that recognizes the disproportionate negative impact COVID has had on minority businesses. She was inspired by the Black Lives Matter protests in Kingston, seeing young leaders take charge got her thinking: “How, in my own way, can I give back to my community?” After rolling through ideas like running for mayor, she came about the idea of a food truck festival where all proceeds would be donated to Black Lives Matter charities. She called Marine with this idea, and thank goodness she did. Together, they made an undeveloped idea for a food truck festival into an diversity-centered business event to stimulate economic growth in the community.Marine Nimblette is an undergraduate student at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. She is a Cell and Molecular Biology major planning on applying to medical school. She has a passion for helping people and wants to have a positive effect on this world. As an alumna of Kingston High School and a child of immigrant parents, she has always felt that the Hudson Valley has a strong sense of community. She believes that during this time it is more important than ever to unify and strengthen our community's resources by uplifting the members who have been neglected: minority groups. As a minority, she has experienced the hurdles that come with trying to be successful in a majority-white community and hopes to help alleviate this struggle for others by giving minority businesses an opportunity to showcase themselves.Businesses United in Diversity's Mission: It is a known reality that minority businesses are subject to a lack of managerial and industrial resources, discriminatory lending practices, and an absence of community support. COVID-19 made this reality even more consequential: black-owned and minority-owned businesses have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. COVID-19 has impacted businesses of all types significantly over the past few months by limiting foot traffic to a near-complete halt, restricting household incomes, and creating a fear of being surrounded by others that will last for years to come. For these combined reasons, our mission is to help counteract the systemic hurdles and effects of COVID-19 that minority business owners (with an emphasis on black owners given the societal circumstances) have faced in the Hudson Valley. We want to host an event that will allow businesses to showcase their services and be exposed to a higher volume of consumers while practicing social distancing. Given that the removal of systemic hurdles minority owners face is encompassed in the mission of black lives matter, to represent the united support of the BLM movement by Ulster County we will be donating proceeds to local BLM charities.Today we chat about how and why they put together this event, plus get into the personal and discuss college, COVID and self care.Today's show was engineered Nick Panken host of Freedom Highway from radiokingston.orgWe also heard music from Shana Falana ("Go Higher" plus all show music) and Nubya Garcia ("Fly Free")Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.orgLeave me a voicemail with your thoughts or a few words about who has what you want and why! EP401 - Get Ready for Practice By Design with Nathan Eckel   If you would rather skim and scan before you listen, I have created some short off-the-cuff notes for your convenience.   Want more info? Go to iPracticeByDesign.com for more resources. To access Nathan’s physician-specific interview content on KindleUnlimited go to Nathan’s Amazon Author page here: www.amazon.com/author/nathaneckel ***** KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE Ultimately - For real change to happen in healthcare, someone needs to say some unpopular things that no one will like.   Here are a few of those unpopular things, before you invest your time!   1. physicians and administrators need to work together. 2. we need to treat causes not symptoms 3. the whistleblowing insiders talking about the lack of price transparency and other symptoms need to dig deeper and provide solutions that address the root causes of why those issues exist in the first place 4. Politicians must be held accountable for irresponsible promises.   About this podcast   From 401 onward I am changing this podcast to Practice By Design I am born/married to medicine Do you care about making healthcare sustainable? Healthcare is bleeding to death   WHO it’s for - MDs, Partner/Owners, Executives, and Patients/Voters   WHY it is - Because healthcare is bleeding to death, and everyone downstream from increasingly disliked hospital executives on down are feeling the pinch   What it is NOT - this is NOT a burnout podcast.  This is NOT a place where we blame and shame and attribute ill.  This is NOT a place to highlight symptoms.   What it IS - Nathan Eckel is a designer NOT a doctor, although he’s seen it his entire life as a son and a spouse of medicine. Design and sustainability thinking has a lot to offer the unsustainable world of american healthcare.   Things are so unsustainable economically, relationally, politically, that an outside perspective from a designer not a doctor might bring clarity and perspective.    I believe that there are design centered opportunities to partially mitigate and slow the bleeding of healthcare.    For patient facing physicians willing to rethink their patient interactions, they could easily save 100 hours this year.   For executives trying to breakeven on reimbursements, they could rethink ways to educate, empower, and partner with patients and voters in their community for sustainable, objective reporting instead of subjective HCAHPS reviewing.   Ultimately - For real change to happen, someone needs to say some unpopular things that no one will like. Of the four groups of healthcare - the Patients, Physician/Providers, People in Charge, and Politicians, it is the politicians who need to be accountable to the patients, physician providers and people in charge.  They make money by making promises at patient expense, to the detriment of physician/providers’ livelihoods, family relationships and personal emotional relational and spiritual health.  Not all promises are probable or even possible.  Making irresponsible promises that cannot be fulfilled is crueler than having the restraint to avoid making popular irresponsible promises.   MISSION It is my hope that by giving MDs the opportunity to get the margin that comes by practicing by design (not default) many will learn the language of the boardroom and take a role in governance and common-sense policymaking so that we can have sustainable expectations and fulfillment of healthcare we need. Including the transparent pricing that everyone wants.   Did this resonate with you? Would you please SHARE, APPLY and INVITE others to join us?

Brittni Adams is the founder and designer of Whitby Handbags, a socially conscious luxury handbag line dedicated to preventing the exploitation of girls around the world through education, namely: Haiti, Iraq, Peru and Thailand. Brittni founded Whitby in 2014 after two years of extensive research on the topic of modern-day slavery and its correlation to the widespread problem of girls not having access to educational opportunities due to gender discrimination, religion, or poverty. Brittni has B.A. in mass communication, public relations from Georgia College and State University, and a master’s certificate in nonprofit management from the University of North Carolina. Brittni lives in Brookhaven (Atlanta) with her husband Jeremy and golden retriever puppy Magnolia. Apart from Whitby she is the co-founder of Atlanta Women Entrepreneurs and mentors high school girls at Passion City Church. Mission: It’s no small task that Brittni has taken on… I loved her statement about always having the “capacity to dream”. This is so often what holds people back - not being able to visualize the possibilities right in front of them.    Mindset: Can you imagine someone launching a fashion company with no fashion experience? With so many firsts and lessons learned along the way, Brittni shares how she was able to keep moving forward putting one foot in front of the other. Marketing: “Throw a party”. That was the advice that Brittni implemented during her launch and it turned out to be a great success. Listen as she shares the story of the launch party and why it made all the difference. Masterminds:  Community makes all the difference… Brittni shares the impact that Atlanta’s Plywood People community has made along her journey. Mastermind Challenge: I love Brittni’s story about the launch party for Whitby and how it really changed the momentum of her business. Having hosted many events for MYL, I know that there’s nothing like the energy of bringing people together. How can you create an event around your business that allows people to enjoy an experience that forever reminds them of you and your mission?

Jason "J-Boom" Legaard is an inspirational speaker and entrepreneur with a mission to inspire the fire within those pursuing their dreams. After a childhood near death experience, he was crippled by guilt for years. Now his Attitude of Gratitude has allowed him to serve others in breaking free into their greatness. Jason is co-host of The Mindset Mountain Podcast and Co-creator of the personal development training, "Climbing the Mindset Mountain."  He also provides one on one coaching to guide clients past their B.S. and into bringing the BOOM back into their life! Mission: It was the decision to attend an entrepreneurship conference in 2011 that changed everything for Jason and sparked the passion to exit his 9-5 and own his own business. He returned from that conference a new person with a deep focus on building a purpose-driven business and never looked back. He didn't act is hast and quit his job, but has spent the last several years growing his business on the side. In December 2015, that side business became his full-time job and he is officially a full-time entrepreneur. Mindset: Jason credits self-awareness as being a key turning point in his journey to develop the mindset needed to successfully achieve his dreams.  When we become aware of the truth and stop lying to ourselves (either by painting too rosy a picture or too dark a picture) that's when we're able to gain the clarity to make significant change. How does that resonate with you? Have you ever been in a situation where you were weren't able to see the truth because you were projecting overly positive or negative thoughts? Share in the comments below. Marketing: With a film-making background, Jason went all in with video to help spread the message and grow his network. Being authentic in front of the camera has allowed him to create a connection with his growing audience while serving them with inspiring content. Momentum: The moments that have brought the most momentum for Jason have both come from sharing his personal journey in an effort to serve communities and inspire transformation. This sparked a great conversation about the importance of connecting to a deep sense of purpose and how doing THAT in the beginning of your entrepreneurial journey is what allows for moments that create a deep connection with your community. Masterminds: From the Jonathan Budd, the host of that 2011 conference, to the Team at Results 513, to his friend and business partner, Eddie Aguilar; Jason shares that he wouldn't be where his is together without bringing these people and communities along his side. Mastermind Challenge: Jason shared a powerful exercise that we can all benefit from. Look at yourself and your current situation as if you're looking at someone else. From this 3rd party perspective, what do you see? Are there areas where you would advise this person to step up their game? Are are there areas where you would offer encouragement that this person is doing a great job and to stop being so hard on themselves? Be honest with yourself about where you're at and make a plan to get where you want to go.  We're all in this together! Mission? It is actively breaking barriers building bridges, there are no no go areas for us in mission! There is a truth that the whole world needs to hear, they are ALL precious to the Lord. That is the message in any mission. When people become lepers, divisions are broken down, they are all in the same boat. We must get that into our heads before we think we can begin to reach out to anyone. Kumar shares his heart on mission from the front line.
